“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

DA Summer Weekend Road Trip OFFERING

o you have an urge to sneak in a weekend summertime road trip that is close to home? Then aim your internal compass toward Yankton.

It’s only an hourish trip from Sioux Falls to a place that captures the panorama of the Missouri River. The area’s landscape features the Mighty Missouri River dissected with chalkstone river bluffs, gently rolling hills and flat agricultural land.

But Yankton offers more than a beautiful view of the river. There’s also a variety of experiences from outdoor adventures on the Missouri River and Lewis and Clark Lake to historical and cultural exploration.

Yankton also has a significant historical past. Notably, explorers Lewis and Clark had their first council with the Yankton Sioux in 1804. To commemorate its history, the town hosts a yearly celebration called Riverboat Days. This year’s Riverboat theme is “A journey through history: The Magnificent Meridian” coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Yankton’s Meridian Bridge and will take place August 15, 16 and 17.

But beyond the area’s abundant outdoor recreation and three-day Riverboat Days celebration, here are five places that may go under the radar when it comes to visiting Yankton:

MERIDIAN BRIDGE – Walk or bike across the historic bridge that was built in 1924 connecting Yankton to Nebraska. The highway bridge was formerly U.S. Route 81 and spanned

the Missouri River. Viewed as a major feat of engineering, the double-decker bridge is 3013 feet long. It was closed to traffic in 2008 then opened in 2011 to pedestrians and bikes.

NFAA EASTON YANKTON ARCHERY CENTER – The world’s largest archery facility, offers various ranges and facilities for archery at all levels, Situated on 100 acres, it includes three outdoor field ranges, a 3D range with a 40’ elevated platform, a 90m indoor range, a fitness center, indoor tennis courts and indoor air rifle.

MEAD MUSEUM – The Mead House is home to the Dakota Territorial Museum and Yankton County Historical Society. The collections highlight Dakota Territory, Yankton, Yankton County and Missouri River Valley history. The three-story brick building was designed by Dr. Leonard Mead in 1909.

GAVINS POINT NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY AND AQUARIUM – Located adjacent to the Missouri River the facility has been producing fish for sport fishing and restoration projects for nearly 60 years.

MERIDIAN DISTRICT – The Meridian District is Yankton’s historic downtown. The area offers boutique shopping, delicious dining and lots of history with 19th century architecture, and is the central location for the Meridian bridge and Missouri River.

Brookings Brookings SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL & MORE!

This exhibition honors the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), a national organization founded in 1890 to promote civic betterment through volunteer service. In South Dakota, that mission inspired early clubwomen to champion art as vital to community life. Their commitment to cultural appreciation laid the foundation for the South Dakota Art Museum.

From circulating art to rural study clubs to advocating for a permanent museum at SDSU, the South Dakota GFWC helped preserve the region’s artistic heritage. Their donated traveling collection—including works by Oscar Howe, Della Vik, Thomas Hart Benton, and Diana M. Tollefson—remains a cornerstone of the Museum.

The Founding Gifts celebrates the legacy of these cultural pioneers, whose vision continues to shape the Museum and inspire art lovers.

repurposed creations. Meeting the artist behind a handcrafted leather belt or delicate necklace creates a connection that mass retail can’t match. As one patron noted, “Local art matters.”

Beyond the visual arts, BSAF is a feast for the senses. This year, 38 food booths will tempt your taste buds with culinary delights ranging from local favorites to exotic flavors. Forget soup to nuts – think alligator, chislic, and gyros! Complementing the food vendors are over 30 Artisan Food and Natural booths, showcasing handcrafted maple syrups, salsas, honey, soaps, lotions, candles, and other delectable and unique items.

The energy of BSAF extends to its free entertainment across three stages and strolling performers throughout the park. The historic Bandshell and Prairie Stage will host headlining acts, while the newly christened Variety Stage in the children’s area will feature kidfriendly music and activities. This year, get ready to groove with The Great Northern, whose sound blends rock, blues, and country influences. You also won’t want to miss Funk-UH-Fried, a band promising a fusion of groove, modern soul, and old-school funk.

Families will find a welcoming haven in the central Children’s Area, complete with make-andtake booths, a playground, and the

convenient Diaper & Nursing Tent. Adding to the festival’s unique charm are 15 Living History and 10 Antique booths, offering a glimpse into South Dakota’s rich past.

The Brookings Summer Arts Festival is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and the enduring power of art. Join the fun on July 12th (10 am - 7 pm) and July 13th (10 am - 5 pm) in Pioneer Park. Admission is free, and while cash is recommended (ATMs are available), the experience is priceless. Don’t forget your walking shoes, and sunscreen, and bring your friends for a full day of exploration.

Make a day of it in Brookings! Catch Prairie Repertory Theatre’s lively Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, or immerse yourself in the South Dakota Art Museum’s stunning Harvey Dunn and Ben Reifel exhibits. RETIRE IN SYNC

Do you and your partner have the same vision of the future?

Retirement should be a season of reward. But many couples have very different expectations for what retirement will look like. In one national study, nearly half of couples gave different answers when asked when they plan to retire. And more than half disagreed on how much they needed to save for retirement.¹

Creating a future that reflects what matters to both of you takes more than crunching the numbers. It requires honest conversations about what each of you hopes, dreams, and expects retirement to be. These discussions about the future can shape the financial decisions you’re making now, from how much you save to where you live and work. Working together, you can shape a lifestyle that’s both grounded in reality and reflective of your individual values.

Take a few minutes to write down your answers to these questions. Then compare your answers.

Start with the Big Questions

• When do I want to retire? In today’s world, there’s no longer a magical retirement age. And don’t forget, downsizing or a move to be nearer children or someplace warm could affect when you can retire.

• Where do I want to live? If you’re looking to relocate and one of you is set on a certain location, try to take a long vacation (or several) there together and discuss how you each feel about living there permanently. It’s cheaper to test-drive a dream than to unwind a major move later.

• What will a typical day look like? Quiet mornings at home, or back-to-back travel plans? Volunteering? Grandkids? Golf? You don’t have to agree on everything, but talking through the lifestyle you each imagine can help you plan and align your financial priorities.

Crunch the Numbers

• What expenses might go away—or appear—in retirement?

• How much can we spend each year?

• Where will our income come from? (Social Security, retirement accounts, etc.)

• Are we saving enough?

• If one of us manages the finances, does the other know how to step in if needed?

Your current spending and saving habits directly shape what’s possible for your retirement lifestyle. Being honest about where you are now helps you plan for what’s next with more confidence.

Plan for Detours

Health changes. Market downturns. One of you outliving the other. You may not be able to predict what’s ahead—but you can plan with flexibility in mind.

• Are we prepared for long-term care costs?

• Do we have a plan if one of us passes first?

• Are our estate documents and beneficiary designations up to date?

This is also a great time to talk about estate planning and ensure both of you understand where things stand. Having these discussions makes it easier it is to handle whatever comes your way.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re years away from retiring or already counting down, planning for retirement as a couple takes more than just

logistics. It means being brave enough to share your real hopes and big dreams—whether they feel wildly ambitious or totally practical. It means talking openly, listening without judgment, comparing expectations, and building something shared. Some parts of your vision will match perfectly; others may require compromise. What matters is having the conversations so you can make confident, well-informed decisions together.

PRESCRIPTION

SKIN CARE

kin care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and most of us are well aware. Even knowing this, with all the products flooding the shelves and countless influencers trying to get you to purchase their promoted products, it can be challenging to figure out what products are right for you specifically, especially if you have a particular persistent struggle with your skin. Sometimes, shelf products don’t cover what you might need, and you need prescription skincare instead. There’s no shame in seeking guidance from a dermatologist. Think of it this way: your skin is an organ; it requires proper health care just like the rest of you!

Working with a team of experts can help you upgrade your skincare to a regime of personal excellence. Whether you need especially sensitive products to help heal and soothe your acne, lighten and fade your hyperpigmentation as a result of acne scars or sun spots, soothe rosacea, or help with aging and wrinkles, finding the precise method of approach through professional consultation and prescription products gives you a precision approach to your skin care needs. Schedule an appointment with a dermatologist/skincare professional today to determine which skincare products best fit your skin! n

Fashion can be intimidating. Especially with rapidly changing trends, seeking what you want and what you need at retail can be tiring. While there is some level of store-by-store curation when it comes to inventory at big box retailers, they’re still pulling from a selection of cookie-cutter racks that get sent out across the country and may or may not be right for you locally or as an individual. That, combined with a desire to escape the daily retail hustle and bustle in favor of a more relaxed shopping experience, barely scratches the surface as to why you should look into shopping at local boutiques.

Boutiques feature hand-curated selections that are much more down to earth, favoring product quality over quantity to line shelves. Local boutique owners also know their clientele and use that knowledge to further design their selection process around the desires of their customers. Allowing for a relaxed, quiet experience in a comfortable and cozy environment, with a selection featuring a variety of unique pieces to add to your wardrobe that you wouldn’t otherwise find instore or online at major retailers. Support your wardrobe and our local business owners by shopping at local boutiques for a fashion-forward and friendly experience made for savvy shoppers like you. n

FROM SISTERS TO CO-FOUNDERS:

The Story Behind Impact Wealth Management

What happens when two women walk away from everything they’ve built to create something better? For Richelle and Heather, it led to a reimagined approach to wealth—one that’s gaining traction for good reason.

Richelle had spent nearly two decades in financial planning. Heather had devoted her career to creating exceptional client experiences.

“We didn’t set out to reinvent the industry. We just couldn’t ignore the feeling that something wasn’t right.”

In the financial industry, success is often measured by how much money you manage and the size of your office. They watched as the financial industry rewarded complexity over clarity, sales over service, and status over substance. And they knew there had to be a better way.

So when they left behind their titles, their financial stability

and everything that looked “secure” on paper, Impact Wealth Management was born – a flat fee, people-first financial planning firm based in Sioux Falls

“We actually thought we invented flat fees,” Richelle laughs. “Turns out we didn’t—but we were among the first to bring it to this community.”

Unlike most firms, Impact doesn’t charge based on how much clients have invested. Instead, clients pay a flat annual fee, so there are no hidden incentives. But perhaps more radically, Richelle and Heather limit the number of households they serve.

“That’s almost unheard of in this industry,” says Heather. “Most advisors are encouraged to keep adding clients forever. But the reality is, service erodes. People fall through the cracks.”

That’s not how Impact works.

Earlier this year, when markets turned volatile, Richelle personally reviewed every single client portfolio. “Nothing was automated. No one was overlooked. That’s the power of a deliberately small client list.”

This commitment to depth over breadth shows up in every part of the firm. Client meetings—typically held twice a year—aren’t spent reciting charts and market jargon. The real planning happens behind the scenes, so the conversations can center on what matters: family dynamics, health updates, and goals that are shifting.

“Clients tell us things they don’t think are relevant,” Richelle says. “But those moments—a tough diagnosis, a family tension—shape the plan more than any number ever could.”

Impact limits the number of households they serve—on purpose. Because the best planning takes time, care, and space to listen.

“We believe money isn’t just for growing. It’s for grounding. For giving. For showing up for the people and causes that matter most.”

Are you ready for that kind of relationship?

Arizona.

This recipe should be served immediately, or you may refrigerate the cream cheese mixture and cucumbers to save overnight.

MORE THAN A PICTURE FRAME

Conservation Framing

Every art piece is special - and so are its framing requirements.

“Any kind of art – from an original Picasso to a piece of children’s art – can look better in a nice frame,” said Lindsey McCann, owner of Rehfeld’s Modern Fine Art & Framing.

“So focusing on safeguarding the artwork from environmental harm and preserving its visual charm should be a priority. It’s what we do at Rehfeld’s. We specialize in creating framing that will make special memories last for years. It’s called personalized conservation framing.”

Personalized conservation framing is a technique that requires careful choice and use of materials and techniques that aren’t harmful to the artwork as time goes by. If materials have acidity, this may result in the art yellowing, becoming fragile, and leading to general deterioration. Thus, conservation framing protects from environmental conditions such as sunlight, especially ultraviolet (UV) light, humidity, moisture, and even insects, while enhancing the visual impact of the art itself.

“The ‘original look’ for your artwork is ideal therefore, preservation is a priority,” maintains McCann. “Our staff at Rehfeld’s takes great pride in our knowledge of conservation framing practices. It is how we go about choosing and framing materials for framing projects.”

Not everyone knows the science and principles behind conservation framing techniques, so educating clients is especially important.

“When designing, we will educate you about our available products and techniques, including UV-filtered glass, acid-free matting, and museum-quality mounting. We can help you choose what options work best for you and your art so it will last for years to come.”

With so much to think about, how do clients go about selecting the right frame? McCann says, “Look to the object for the answer.”

“When selecting a frame, the object will suggest the style. Abstracts and modern paintings, for example, are better suited for a sleek, contemporary frame. Classical items and antiques will fit better in an elegant, traditional frame. For anything in between, there are hundreds of transitional frames available.”

The professionals at Rehfeld’s can offer sage advice about how their art gallery frames and mats each piece of art and the materials and framing techniques they use.

“Our staff is highly experienced in handling valuable works of art and ready to meet your needs. We believe custom framing should combine the desired outcome of enhanced presentation as well as protect the artwork or items being framed; Therefore we offer personalized solutions for the careful handling and preservation of your art pieces.” n

AMP UP YOUR CURB APPEAL

Enhancing your home’s exterior not only boosts its beauty but can also increase its value when done correctly.

Summer is the perfect time to tackle outdoor home projects, whether you’re a confident DIYer or prefer to hire a professional. Fortunately, upgrades can range from simple enhancements— like painting your front door—to more significant renovations, such as modernizing your garage doors. No matter the scale of your project, improving your curb appeal can make a dramatic difference, whether you’re looking to fall in love with your home all over again or prepping it for sale.

A FRESH COAT OF PAINT can work wonders on a faded or lackluster exterior. You can opt for a complete home makeover or focus on key accents such as the front door, garage doors, shutters, or window boxes. Before painting, clean the surface with a garden hose or power washer, testing first to ensure your materials can handle power washing if you choose that method. If selecting the right colors feels overwhelming, consider consulting a paint expert to find the perfect shades to make your home stand out. Additionally, new paint will enhance curb appeal and protect your siding and wood trim from South Dakota’s harsh weather conditions.

REPAIRING CRACKED, BROKEN, OR SINKING CONCRETE will improve your home’s appearance and address vital functional concerns. Many cracks are repairable before they develop into costly issues, and sinking concrete can often be lifted and corrected through mud-jacking, which is a process that is far more cost-effective than replacement. Damaged concrete can also lead to water drainage problems, potentially causing costly foundation issues if left unaddressed. Budget-allowing, consider tinting and stamping concrete for a beautiful, custom-designed walkway or driveway.

DON’T OVERLOOK THE GUTTERSthey play a crucial role in aesthetics and functionality, directing water away from your home and foundation. Installing gutter guards is a smart way to reduce maintenance while improving safety—after all, falls from ladders are a common cause of emergency room visits.

LANDSCAPING is the finishing touch to your home’s exterior, adding charm and even attracting birds and butterflies. If you’re not well-versed in plant care but want to go beyond simple porch planters, consult a local landscaping expert familiar with South Dakota’s climate. They can recommend plant varieties that suit your lifestyle and maintenance preferences and assist with sprinkler systems or water feature installations. Landscape lighting is another excellent investment that can elevate the beauty of your yard.

HARDWARE AND ACCESSORIES offer an easy way to add personality to your home. Many homeowners embrace their home’s original style while modernizing it with stylish new touches, such as decorative house numbers, updated door hardware, and garage door accents. Popular trends include faux-wood garage doors, mid-century modern elements, and farmhouse-style sconces.

If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowner’s association (HOA), be sure to check for any approval requirements before making changes to your home’s exterior.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN, take before-andafter photos of your home to document the impact of your improvements. If you decide to sell, keeping a record of your upgrades will help potential buyers and real estate agents understand the work you’ve done—and its value. n

Luxurious Lakeside

LIVING IN THE CITY

Year-round resort-style living is a dream come true for the Kurtenbach family.

Having grown up in Sioux Falls, Sarah Kurtenbach left her hometown to pursue an exciting, fast-paced career in New York City. Returning to Sioux Falls wasn’t part of her original plan—until she met her future husband, Chad. “His sister-in-law—now my sister-in-law and I were, and still are, really good friends, so she introduced us,” Sarah recalls with a laugh. “My parents love him for bringing me home.”

Now settled in a stunning home nestled along the shores of Sioux Falls’ only natural springfed lake, Sarah can’t imagine living anywhere else. “When we were engaged and I was still living in New York, Chad toured a home in this neighborhood that was part of the Parade of Homes. We had planned to buy an existing home, but once he saw the lake and the available lakefront lots, he called and said, ‘You need to fly to Sioux Falls this week to see these lots—I think we should consider building here.’ Once I arrived, we drove out to the development, and we instantly fell in love. The beautiful natural lake, private walking and biking path, stunning views—it’s rare to have this kind of setting within city limits. We bought the land and began working with Chris and April George of George Custom Homes to design our dream home.”

Sarah explains, “We built this house while we were engaged and didn’t yet have children, but we designed it to grow with our family and accommodate every stage of life. We also included a zero-entry from the garage to the main level, where the laundry room, kitchen, primary suite, and guest bedroom are all located. That way, grandparents or guests with mobility challenges can easily access everything. As for the design, we wanted it to feel classic, warm, welcoming, and timeless.”

TEN

YEARS LATER,

the Kurtenbachs are still in love with their home and the vibrant community surrounding it. What began as a small cluster of houses has become a close-knit neighborhood that hosts block parties and features private walking and biking trails as well as a residents-only beach. It’s also an ideal place to raise their two children. “The lake is incredibly clean and about 30 feet deep. It’s stocked with bass, walleye, and other fish, so it’s great for family fishing. The sunsets over the lake are absolutely breathtaking. We love making memories, whether doing cannonballs off the dock, paddleboarding, or riding bikes around the private path.”

From the moment you step inside, panoramic lake views take center stage. The Kurtenbachs worked closely with their builder to incorporate soaring, custom-crafted ceilings and an airy, open floor plan. Uniquely stained hardwood floors add warmth and practicality. “We love these floors because they hide everything,” Sarah laughs.

The kitchen, perfectly designed for everyday living and entertaining, overlooks the dining and living areas. A stunning stacked stone fireplace rises to meet the 20-foot ceiling, creating a cozy, welcoming space. A hidden pantry includes a discreet hatch leading to the garage—ideal for unloading groceries from the car to the kitchen. Off the dining room, a spacious covered deck offers yet another opportunity to soak in the view.

THE PRIMARY SUITE and children’s bedrooms are located on opposite sides of the main floor, providing both privacy and proximity. The primary suite features direct access to the deck and a bay of windows offering uninterrupted lake views. A luxurious bathroom connects to a spacious walk-in closet. It also features a twosided fireplace—allowing Sarah and Chad to enjoy the cozy fireplace from the bedroom and bath simultaneously.

A beautifully crafted custom timber and metal open staircase leads to the lower level, which offers a distinctly different ambiance from the light and airy main floor. “We wanted each level to reflect a unique atmosphere,” Sarah says. “The main floor is full of creams, grays, and whites with a touch of modern rustic. It was important to have a timeless and welcoming feel, with lots of natural light. The lower level has more of a cozy cabin vibe—browns, creams, stone, and rich textures, complete with heated floors throughout for cold South Dakota nights.”

THE WALK-OUT lower level mirrors the main floor layout with two guest bedrooms—one that serves as Sarah’s home office—flanking a spacious living area. A conversation space with a rustic fireplace opens onto an amazing outdoor kitchen. Nearby, a nearly full-sized second kitchen and a theater room make this the ultimate entertaining zone. “This has become such a wonderful space for our family and friends to gather,” Sarah shares.

And while the home’s interior is stunning, Sarah’s favorite space is outdoors. “We love being outside and on the water, so we created a backyard oasis to enhance that lifestyle and make it perfect for hosting,” she says. Their lakeside retreat includes a sunken fire pit with custom benches and cushions, a tranquil water feature, a built-in grill with granite countertops, a private sandy beach, and a dock extending into the lake.

After years of living in ‘the fast lane’ of New York City, Sarah is thrilled to have returned to Sioux Falls to build a peaceful, memory-filled life with her family. “There’s no other place in the city that offers such incredible lake views paired with such a clean, swimmable lake. The sunsets are incredible. We’ve truly created our own little slice of heaven.” n

Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea

SIGNS TO WATCH FOR THAT MAY INDICATE YOUR CHILD HAS A PROBLEM

For many parents, noticing their child snore, gasp for breath, or sleep restlessly through the night may be signs of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)—a medical condition in which a blockage of the upper airway causes periodic pauses in breathing during sleep. In addition to these more obvious symptoms, there are subtler signs that may point to an underlying issue, including speech difficulties, bedwetting, a misdiagnosis of or increase in attention deficit disorder (ADD), and overall exhaustion that can lead to behavioral challenges or a diminished sense of well-being.

Sioux Falls area mom Elizabeth noticed several of these symptoms in her five-year-old daughter, Ellery. At age two, Ellery had ear tubes placed and her adenoids removed to address recurring ear infections. While the surgery resolved the infections, she continued to struggle with sleep and was seeing a speech therapist due to difficulty pronouncing her “k” and “r” sounds—issues caused by her enlarged tonsils.

Deciding to proceed with another surgery to remove Ellery’s tonsils wasn’t easy for Elizabeth and her husband, but the results were remarkable. “We’ve seen incredible improvement since her surgery,” Elizabeth shares. “Before, she would wake up exhausted and irritable. Now, she falls asleep easily, rarely snores, and has incredible energy! In the mornings, she’s ready to get up and go. Her speech has also improved tremendously.”

Dr. Greg Danielson of Midwest ENT & Allergy explains, “I tell parents that snoring in children is not normal. If they are snoring, it could be a sign of sleep difficulties. When we’re tired, we can’t concentrate the way we should, and that impacts our mood. The same goes for kids—poor sleep can affect their behavior and well-being.”

If you suspect your child may be having issues related to their tonsils or adenoids, speak with your primary care provider or consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for an evaluation. If their tonsils and adenoids are enlarged, a common surgical procedure may significantly improve their breathing and overall health. Dr. Danielson explains, “We’ll examine the ears, nose, and throat. If we’re concerned about enlarged tonsils or adenoids, we’ll discuss the findings and next steps with the family. If they choose to move forward, we coordinate the procedure through our surgical scheduling team.”

The surgery typically takes less than an hour, with a 10–14 day recovery period during which children are advised to avoid high-intensity play due to a small risk of bleeding complications. Elizabeth adds, “Ellery did really well— we kept her distracted with coloring, games, and movies. It’s absolutely worth it to see your child become who they’re meant to be. Her tonsils were holding her back from talking, sleeping, and reaching her potential. Now, seeing her thrive—it’s amazing.”

Fur-cation Healthy Habits

Boarding your pet can be stressful for both you and your family. Being a previous kennel attendant at a pet boarding facility, I have learned the best ways to reduce boarding stress for you both. The following information will help to ease your mind and ensure your pet has the best stay possible!

New environments can be very daunting for your pet. Dogs may love to play with new friends, or they can be shy or skittish. To ease an extended stay for your dog, I recommend starting with a local doggy daycare to get them used to a short visit with other dogs and kennel attendants. A routine built on a once-a-month visit can help your dog feel at home when you board them for extended periods.

For cats, I recommend making them comfortable in their carrier kennel by crate training them. To do that, leave your carrier kennel open in your home at least one month before your trip to encourage them to enter the carrier whenever they want. This will ultimately build trust and help them associate their carrier with a safe environment and reduce their stress while going to a new environment.

Tools to try would be calming pheromone sprays on any blankets or familiar toys to help reduce mild anxiety. If your pet has extreme anxiety in transit, during playtime, or while

kenneled, I would recommend consulting with your primary veterinarian to consider other medications that can help decrease moderate to severe anxiety during their stay.

Other things to consider are the overall health of not only your pet, but the other pets staying at the boarding facility. Ensure your pet is current on its flea, tick, and intestinal parasite coverage. I would also recommend testing a fecal sample of your pet with your primary veterinarian to ensure no infectious diseases can be spread from animal to animal. Finally, keep your pet up to date on all vaccinations.

For dogs, I recommend the following vaccinations as a minimum: Rabies, Distemper, Leptospirosis, Bordetella.

For felines, I recommend Rabies and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), as a minimum.

Another option to traditional kenneling would be to hire an in-home care provider if you have a reputable company or individual in your area. Make sure the provider has an opportunity to meet your pet(s) in person so they recognize them when they come to care for them and become familiar with food locations and routines.

As always, consult with your primary veterinarian to ensure a smooth transition from home to hotel vacation! n

Restoring Quality of Life – One Breath at a Time

TRANSFORMATIVE HOLISTIC THERAPY OFFERS PATIENTS SUPERCHARGED HEALING AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has emerged as a transformative treatment for a wide range of medical conditions—from radiation injuries to diabetic wounds. By increasing oxygen levels at the cellular level, this therapy harnesses the body’s natural healing power.

For Nurse Practitioner Jada Hieb at Midwest Hyperbarics in Sioux Falls, the opportunity to deliver this level of care to her community has been nothing short of amazing. “As a holistic adjunct therapy, it complements many traditional treatments and can accelerate recovery in ways that are empowering for patients. For those who feel they've run out of options, HBOT often brings renewed hope.”

The process is straightforward: patients relax in a comfortable, pressurized chamber—set at two to three times the normal atmospheric pressure—where they breathe 100% oxygen for 60 to 90 minutes. This significantly increases the oxygen concentration in plasma, enabling it to reach damaged tissues more effectively. The result is enhanced natural healing, reduced inflammation, and improved infection control. HBOT promotes faster recovery from injuries, surgeries, and chronic conditions by boosting cell regeneration and reducing swelling. Truly a therapy that sparks self-healing.

Remarkably, HBOT has also been shown to increase stem cell mobilization by up to eightfold. These stem cells play a vital role in repairing and regenerating damaged tissue, offering particular benefits to patients dealing with chronic wounds, neurological conditions, or physical injuries.

Previously, Midwest Hyperbarics operated individual chambers that treated one patient at a time. Now, they’re pleased to announce the expansion of their facility, which includes a new walk-in TEKNA chamber capable of accommodating up to three patients at once. This advancement allows them to treat multiple individuals simultaneously in a spacious, comfortable environment.

Jada shares, ”It improves access, shortens wait times, and allows caregivers to accompany patients when necessary—especially important for children or individuals with mobility challenges. This upgrade marks a significant step forward in making advanced HBOT more accessible and efficient for our community. It’s a game-changer for our patients and speaks to our ongoing commitment. We’re here for the long haul, constantly evolving to meet needs and exceed expectations.” The larger chamber also offers a welcome solution for patients who experience claustrophobia.

Even more exciting to Jada is the potential for greater collaboration with local healthcare providers. “With our expanded capacity and advanced chamber, we’re better equipped than ever to partner with physicians, wound care specialists, oncologists, and others to provide supportive care for FDA-approved conditions. This allows providers to offer their patients a clinically proven treatment that enhances outcomes and reduces complications.”

BENEFITS OF HBOT:

• Boosts immune response

• Enhances healing and recovery

• Improves circulation

SUPPORT FOR SOUTH DAKOTANS IN NEED

Home Again South Dakota

Lives can change in an instant. For Anne Christopherson, a stroke would bring unexpected challenges, and shift her once-active lifestyle to one of uncertainty. “I just wanted to stay in my room,” Anne recalled. “I didn’t really care if I recovered, honestly.”

Anne’s daughter, Cheyenne Courtney, was by her mother’s side throughout her struggles. “There were probably five or six months where she didn’t have a wheelchair, and you could see that she was declining,” she said. “It did take probably two years for her to really come back out of her shell.”

When the family discovered Home Again—an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for older individuals, or individuals with disabilities— they learned that Anne could have a new lease on life. They provided her with an electric wheelchair, new bed, and other amenities to help Anne become more independent in self-care.

“Home Again gave me independence, peace of mind, (and) they went above and beyond,” Anne said. Her new wheelchair allowed her to focus more on her health and reconnect with her family, without always needing a caretaker by her side. “Having that electric wheelchair

has done amazing things for me. It’s made me want to focus on my health and do better for (my family).”

Cheyenne has been a witness to the positive changes in her mother. “Even with her disabilities, she’s not truly disabled,” she said. “I think that it’s really important to know that it’s okay to ask for help and that it will actually be beneficial and improve your life.”

Anne’s story is just one example of how Home Again is making a difference in the lives of individuals who need it most. By providing resources and support—like finding a suitable home, helping on move-in day, and providing support for independence—they are helping people rediscover the comfort of home and live the life they want.

For those who are facing a similar challenge, or have a loved one with a desire to return to the life they want, help is available. Whether it’s a need for mobility assistance or finding a safe and accessible place to call home, Home Again wants to help you get back on the path to a life well lived.

Unlike traditional practices that treat symptoms with prescriptions, Encompass Wellness focuses on advanced testing and prevention. Patients receive in-depth hormone and cardiovascular lab panels, including comprehensive thyroid analysis—tests rarely offered in standard primary care. This deeper look allows the team to build tailored treatment plans to restore energy, balance, and long-term vitality.

The clinic specializes in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), helping both men and women navigate hormone imbalances, perimenopause, menopause and andropause. Through strategic therapies, many patients experience relief from fatigue, mood changes, weight gain, and brain fog—often after years of frustration with “normal” labs.

For those focused on antiaging and performance, Encompass Wellness also offers peptide therapies including Sermorelin, NAD+, and Glutathione to support natural energy, cellular repair, and graceful aging.

But health doesn’t stop inside the body—skin health is a vital part of aging well. Encompass Wellness offers the latest in non-invasive aesthetic technologies, including:

• BBL (BroadBand Light) Heroic– to correct sun damage, age spots, redness, boost collagen, and tighten skin.

• Morpheus8 – also known as the “nonsurgical facelift” is gold plated microneedling with radiofrequency that tightens, smooths, and resurfaces skin for a more youthful appearance.

Looking for a lifted, sculpted, youthful look—without going under the knife? Morpheus8 is the breakthrough treatment A-listers like Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria, and Jessica Simpson swear by for its ability to tighten, contour, and rejuvenate the skin—naturally and non-surgically.

Dubbed the “non-surgical facelift,” Morpheus8 combines gold plated microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) to penetrate deep into the skin and underlying fat. This powerful combo stimulates collagen production, remodels tissue, and targets skin laxity—leaving you with smoother, tighter, more youthful skin.

SkinPen® Elite, the most advanced FDA-cleared microneedling device, uses precision-controlled microinjuries to stimulate collagen, elastin, and cellular turnover. This process not only smooths texture and reduces fine lines but also helps break up pigment clusters, allowing melasma to gradually fade over time.

Derived from Salmon DNA, PDRN is rich in nucleotides that enhance skin regeneration, reduce inflammation, and inhibit the overproduction of melanin—a key factor in melasma. It also delivers intense hydration, helping to strengthen the skin barrier and prevent future flare-ups.

These treatments pair beautifully with the clinic’s internal approach, offering patients total wellness—from the inside out.

With a dedicated team and a mission to truly change lives, Encompass Wellness is a place where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered to take control of their health and aging journey.

WILSON ANDREA

Four-Time World Champion

The modern world can offer opportunities to meet extraordinary people, specifically through expanded communication platforms, including social media. Those of us in Sioux Falls who have had the privilege of meeting and chatting with Andrea Wilson comes away knowing they have experienced a living example of the intersection of incredible motivation and unacceptance of commonly believed restrictions.

Andrea is the kind of person who, instead of looking longingly at the gifts and resources of others, concentrates her energy on her abilities and what she has at her disposal. “I have always thought that you should take what you can and continue to build upon it.”

STRONG ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC BEGINNINGS

Andrea moved to Sioux Falls when she was in the seventh grade. As a teenager, she loved gymnastics until a training injury in 2003 left her unable to use her legs. Andrea dove into academics, attending Princeton to earn her ecology and evolutionary biology undergraduate degree. She then completed a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins and a nursing degree from Columbia University. Andrea explains her tenacity by saying, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.”

Andrea’s nursing degree led to her relocation to Alaska for a position as a public health nurse. At that time, she was the mother of baby boy, Indigo, and began to experience loneliness from being so far away from her family. Upon moving back to Sioux Falls, Andrea continued to work as a public health nurse, operating the Falls Community Health walk-in STD clinic, and returned to school to pursue a nurse practitioner degree. She chose to expand her family by an anonymous donor and welcomed her second son, Arlo, in 2018.

Not only do I want to reach women like me, but I also want to inspire little girls in chairs so that they aren’t confining themselves to perceived limitations.

ADAPTIVE SPORTS AND EVENTS

When the graduate nursing program struggled to find accommodating clinical placements, Andrea chose to step away from nursing altogether and concentrated on finding ways to gain power over physical limitations. After a friend suggested the Tough Mudder challenge, she enjoyed CrossFit training so much that she focused on that. She explains, “Returning to athletics was familiar and felt great. I wanted to spend multiple hours a day in the gym.”

The functional movements of CrossFit, which include elements of weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio, provided the variety that kept Andrea inspired to continue and offered quality-of-life benefits. She interjects, “I can get around much better with my children, and as a result, they don’t question my strength or ability to do things like climb a hill.”

Andrea excelled at CrossFit and is grateful for her training programming from CrossFit Mayhem in Tennessee and the support she has received from the CrossFit community in Sioux

Falls. Her work ethic and support spurred her achievements beyond regional and local levels. Andrea has earned an impressive four world championship titles and is currently training for what could be her fifth world championship title at the 2025 Adaptive CrossFit Games in Las Vegas, scheduled for September.

Considering those championships, it wasn’t surprising that USA Para Climbing, the adaptive branch of USA Climbing, became familiar with Andrea’s story. After they contacted her about climbing, she ordered a harness, hired a great coach, and began conditioning her smaller muscles and training on climbing techniques.

Frontier Climbing and Fitness in Sioux Falls embraced the chance to help Andrea learn and grow. She comments, “Virtual sessions and training camps scheduled around competitions have prepared me for competition.” Finishing 2nd at the Para Climbing National Championship in March earned her a spot on Team USA, which competed in May at the 2025 IFSC’s Para Climbing World Cup in Salt Lake City. Receiving support from Billion Automotive, adaptive athletic foundations, and a GoFundMe account enables Andrea to continue traveling for Team USA. The team will attend a summer World Cup in Innsbruck, Austria, and the World Championship in Seoul, South Korea, later in the year. This summer will bring an additional challenge as Andrea just received approval from Guinness World Records to attempt to set the world record for the most pull-ups by a female in a wheelchair in one minute.

Andrea quickly credits her mom, Judy Wilson, for helping her through her life challenges. According to the athlete, Judy stayed with her in the hospital following her training injury in 2003 and maintains a close relationship with Andrea and the boys. She owes a lot of her success to her mom. “Mom is always there for us. Her help with the boys makes all my training and traveling for competitions possible.”

CHAMPIONING FOR OTHERS

The number of men’s adaptive athletes in competitions continues to grow. Yet, at some competitions, the lack of women competitors has left the handful of competing women being lumped into men’s competitions. While still glad she can compete, Andrea would like more relevant female competition at events. At the same time, she says, “You need to be competing against yourself and for yourself, not just to beat other people.”

Propelled by her achievements, Andrea feels called to encourage seated women with incredible potential who aren’t challenging themselves physically. Andrea steps outside her comfort zone to reach them by sharing parts of her workouts and journey through social media. She says, “I want to help empower them to branch out into physical challenges like climbing and CrossFit.” Thanks to the help of 12-year-old Indigo, Instagram, and Facebook feature videos of Andrea doing feats like rope climbing while still attached to her chair. “It is my mission to encourage others. Putting those images and videos out there helps others picture themselves involved in these activities.”

Andrea thinks beyond the borders of the US when she imagines more para-sport competition between countries, and she wants to help by catalyzing more para-sport teams in countries worldwide — she is hopeful that the exposure gained from attending international events and the work put into her social media endeavors will positively affect the perceptions that other seated people, especially women, have about their abilities. “Not only do I want to reach women like me, but I also want to inspire little girls in chairs so that they aren’t confining themselves to perceived limitations.”

UNEXPECTED BENEFITS

Aside from the physical benefits of training and preparing for competitive events, Andrea has seen a mental boost from her involvement in CrossFit and climbing. “While much of the world sees me as a seated person needing help, it is nice to feel strong and independent.” She adds, “I would be lost without it. It gives me something to work for and ways to prove to myself that I am at the top of my game.”

Networking with many others in the adaptive community has had a life-changing impact on Andrea. “We feel like family, we all have the same style of humor, and it’s great!” she says. Taking into consideration the friends and connections she has made, Andrea comments, “The adaptive community is so wonderful! We can all experience isolation in our communities, yet social media connects us, and we can support each other in what we are doing. I’ve never had connections like this before.”

While being part of the adaptive community has been a blessing, Andrea says her sons’ reactions to her achievements bring her the most satisfaction. “My oldest thinks climbing and swinging on ropes is the coolest job imaginable. He is proud of my activities and sees them as something special that not all moms can do.” In addition, Andrea notices that both boys have a better understanding and are comfortable being around those with physical impairments. “They have developed the unique reaction that they do not question other people’s abilities to do things for themselves.” n

What’s New: Central Kitchen and Bath

Turning HGTV dreams into real-life design

Sioux Falls area homeowners, contractors, and design enthusiasts have a new place to be inspired – Central Kitchen and Bath. Their 4900 sq. ft. showroom at 501 N. Kiwanis opened in May.

“Since opening our distribution location in Sioux Falls in 2021, we received consistent encouragement from our growing customer base to expand our offerings by adding a showroom,” said Mike Plasier, Plumbing and Heating Wholesale CEO. “After careful research and marketing analysis, we recognized that Sioux Falls is ready for a true, luxury showroom experience.”

Still “luxury” means something different to everyone Plasier says.

“At Central Kitchen and Bath, our showroom features a curated selection of products to meet a wide range of budgets – without compromising on the premium experience our customers expect. Whether visitors to our showroom are looking for high-end finishes or more accessible elegance, we are here to deliver the luxury that fits their vision.”

Susan Sneller is the showroom manager. Sneller specializes in integrating textures, bold wallpaper colors, and shapes

inspired by Instagram-worthy aesthetics.

“We don’t just sell products, we craft a holistic design experience tailored to our clients’ needs,” she said. “Our goal is to make sure each space is both stylish and functional.”

Sneller is proud of the showroom and believes each space becomes an immersive experience that creates a visceral reaction.

“The showroom is packed with the latest kitchens and baths from Hudson Valley Chandelier to 15 running shower heads - to a hammock tub by Maidstone. Our approach ensures that every element of space is unique and coordinated.”

Sneller says visitors to Central Kitchen and Bath can expect the unexpected.

“The showroom reflects thoughtfully edited styles and inspiration. Some pieces are sourced locally; some are European inspired; some may never have been seen before.”

Bath vignettes take design cues from travel destinations. Each is like a jewel box – intensely colored, intimate, and striking.

“There’s Capri, the Hoh Rain Forest, Sedona, Doral National Golf Resort, Acadia National Park, or the sophistication of New York or Napa Valley that have been brought to the heart of Sioux Falls. Each space is designed to transport you to a different place, allowing you to envision a home that embodies your unique style.”

Design packages set us apart from our competitors, Sneller says.

“Whether it’s a renovation or a new construction – big or small – we don’t just create building projects, we create design packages that bring a complete vision to life.”

Having served Sioux Falls on the wholesale side as Plumbing and Heating Wholesale, Inc. for one year and having roots in Sioux City, Plasier says his company is looking forward to this new side of its business model.

“Since the first Central Kitchen and Bath was established on July 31, 2008, in Sioux City, our business has been synonymous with exquisite design as a distinguished division of Plumbing and Heating Wholesale. Central Kitchen and Bath has built a reputation for providing expert guidance, high-end product selections, and a customer-centric approach that makes every project seamless and personalized. Most importantly, we believe your home should feel special – because it is.” n

What’s New: Self-Care Studio

When Jami Schultz and Shanna Konz of Brookings, SD, opened their first Self-Care Studio location, they wanted to offer something originally different. Both healthcare professionals sought a place where people could be “heard, healthy, and happy.”

Self-Care Studio is an integrative wellness clinic that combines traditional and functional medicine to create a personalized, whole-picture approach to health.

They are located in Brookings and have now expanded to Dell Rapids.

“We want to empower patients to optimize their current state without feeling like they will only have answers if they have a certain diagnosis,” says Konz.

Functional medicine is a “holistic, patientcentered wellness approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.” Self-Care Studio states: “Our goal is to treat the whole system, not just the symptom.”

They offer multiple services for men’s and women’s hormone health, hydration, vitamin therapy, aesthetic services, and wellness checkups. They provide in-depth consultations and full-panel lab work to get to the root of the problem.

“Functional medicine is a preventative therapy,” says Schultz, “to prevent chronic disease, we do lab testing and offer a lot of out-of-the-box testing. It’s more varied than traditional medicine.”

Schultz and Konz have worked in the health system for around 20 years and decided to start this venture to offer patients a place to, in Schultz’s words, “explore and dig deep into their health concerns.”

Schultz is a Certified Nurse Practitioner currently working towards her Functional Medicine certification. Konz is also a CNP and has her certification from the North American Menopause Society, the governing body for relaying recommendations to healthcare providers for safe and effective treatment through menopause.

“I think it’s valuable that there’s evidence-based knowledge in our clinic, but we are also open to the philosophies that patients have on how they seek their care,” says Konz.

Self-Care Studio is an insurance-free practice, meaning treatments are cash or card payments by the individual.

“Insurance dictates a lot of healthcare,” says Konz, “doing a cash-pay practice enables us to lead and drive patients individually.”

Self-Care Studio also offers membership packages for IV Hydration & Vitamin Therapy and HydraFacial treatments. Membership provides special pricing for routine IV therapy and skincare to help patients look and feel their best.

“If I had to say our mission in one word, it would be empowerment,” says Konz, “Helping patients have these ‘aha!’ moments.”
