Come Celebrate In new ioux Lookout’s municipal council is hard at work on the document which will be their roadmap for the next four years. Facilitated by Barbara Bowes, President of Legacy Bowes Group, councillors went through two days of brainstorming and discussion to begin to form their strategic plan for the municipality. Councillors focused on the question, what is the vision for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout over the next four years? Bowes explained councillors were encouraged to write ideas down on cards and post them on a wall. Councillors were then better able to see the commonality of their ideas and group them into themes such as infrastructure

and quality of life. Councillors were encouraged to dream big for the exercise, then look at barriers to things happening, and talk about how those barriers could be eliminated. Bowes stated, following the meetings, “Tremendous discussion and consensus. It’s really exciting to see the synergy between the councillors and the consistency in their viewpoint of where they want to go.” Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance said the next step in the process is to arrange council’s ideas and discussions into a draft document they can take to the public for feedback, hopefully in late February or early March. Lawrance said ideas and discussion at the meetings reflect both the priorities elected See THE PLAN on page 6

f registration numbers end up as high as parent interest indicates, French immersion will be offered at Sacred Heart School next September. This fall a meeting was held at Sacred Heart School to determine parent interest levels in a French immersion program for the school. Data collected at that meeting indicated 18 parents of students in junior kindergarten wished to see the program happen as well as 18 parents of students in senior kindergarten. The school board discussed those numbers at their November board meeting

and have decided to offer the program next September at the senior kindergarten and grade 1 level if that high parent interest translates into firm registration numbers. Director of Education Rick Boisvert commented, “Obviously the response that we got from the meeting was really quite good and we were pleased. If everyone who said they are interested in the program stays committed to the program then it’s absolutely a go ahead.” He added, “The next step for us is to have our registration.” Registration will likely take place at the end of January. Superintendent of Education – School Effectiveness Lead

Joanne Querel holds the French immersion portfolio for the board. She said there will likely be 26 spaces offered for children going into senior kindergarten and 20 spaces for children going into grade 1. Spaces will be determined on a first come, first served basis. “With a new program starting we will do our utmost to meet the needs of the students along with the staffing requirements as well. “Right now it’s really going to depend on the parents who were at the meeting who have given us their intention for French immersion and have demonstrated willingness and See WE’VE GOT on page 6
