Come Celebrate ater levelsIn on area waterways are on the rise and the Lake of the Woods Control Board is hoping for a break from recent wet weather to allow water flows to stabilize. Matt DeWolfe, Executive Engineer for the board, commented, “We’re certainly seeing the effects of the snowmelt now. A considerable amount of the snow appears to have sublimated into the air over the last few weeks but there is still plenty left over for filling the local tributaries and reaching into Lac Seul. “We’ve also had a fair amount of rainfall, especially over the last week in the area, and the combination of the two has really got things moving in the system. Right now we’re looking at a new record for

the rate of flow into Lac Seul for this particular week in the year so we’re certainly dealing with very high inflow rates and the lake is coming up quite quickly now. “In response, the board has been directing a series of outflow increases out of Lac Seul. There was one last week and we’ve directed another one for today (May 14) to try to moderate the rate of rise on the lake but there is still a fair amount of room in the lake to store some of this water. Sort of hedging against further wet conditions, as we move into late spring, we want to make sure outflows balance with the inflow.” Commenting further on water levels, he stated, “For this time of the year we’re at the 60th percentile, so it’s just above normal for this time of See Been on page 2
