H

ow to amuse the children during the holiday break can be a problem for many parents but, thanks to the Sioux Lookout Public Library, a solvable one.

During the week of March 10-14 the library hosted numerous events to keep children occupied and amused. Varied activities, such as screening a movie, the setting up of art stations in the children’s area of the library, a games day, and culminating with storytelling on the last day, were events that could be enjoyed by both children and parents in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Micheal Laverty, Assistant/ Children’s Librarian, spoke

about the week. “It’s been great. We typically see new families that we usually don’t see and, with the hockey tournament in town, we had a few parents and kids from northern communities drop by, which was good.”

He added, “I am looking to start an after school program and a schedule that involves people of all ages, doing things like computer learning and art workshops.”

Wendy MacDonald, CEO/ Chief Librarian, thought, “It was an exceptional week, very nice to a number of kids who were able to take advantage of the program.

We had a number of out of towners who used the facilities we offered and that was great.

I stood in a puddle On my way across the parking lot getting to the hardware store I thoughtlessly minced my way around a puddle between my truck and the front door.

Two steps later I was an eight-year-old kid again, on my way to school in a rainstorm, wearing my brand new Hopalong Cassidy

raincoat and a pair of rubber boots. I didn’t miss a puddle anywhere between home on Pine Street and Summer Street School. Not one! And I was a happy, happy little cowboy.

“Who walks around a puddle at this time of year?” I asked myself as I turned around in the parking lot that sunny afternoon last week,

strolled back to the puddle with great glee, and proceeded to wade through the deepest, widest spot.

It was a March afternoon. It was heaven!

I forded that puddle twice more - just because it was there and I had rubber boots and I felt as joy-filled as a little kid with a new discovery.

And then, as I was getting into my truck to leave, I suddenly turned around and went back again with my camera.

No to rezoning park land Recently homes near the Fuller Street Park received notification from the town of their plan to rezone the park from Open Space to Multi Residential.

I am writing to comment on the proposed amendments. To be clear, I oppose the plan to rezone this property.

To start, the notice of rezoning was posted right beside the request for proposals to build on the land. The deadline for submitting a proposal closed before mayor and council have decided to accept the change in zoning. From my perspective, it looks like the decision has already been made and that plans are moving ahead.

I wonder what might be driving this but was told by the town that it is only to make full use of the construction season and that there is still opportunity to voice my opinion about the rezoning and impact change. I hope that this statement is true.

Next, I wonder about the large amount of land already available in Sioux Lookout for residential development. Why is the town not focusing on developing lands that are ready for such activities rather than repurposing green space that is the heart of our neighbourhood?

In brief, my concerns about the rezoning relate to: 1. Green space is proven to improve health and wellbeing. We should be conserving it.

2.

There is no public park within walking distance of

this neighbourhood so accessible, safe recreation areas are already limited in this area.

3. Any traffic increases will cause even more deterioration of our already crumbling road.

4. With two schools within a block, roads are already busy. We have no sidewalks. More traffic puts children walking to and from school at risk.

Not so long ago, Project Playground suggested uses for this land as they too see the potential of the Fuller Street/Second Avenue green space for the community. Adjacent to the community garden and the Sunset Women’s Aboriginal Circle as well many children within a few blocks (many who can’t afford organized recreation), there is strong rationale for maintaining or even enhancing this green space.

On March 19 my family and neighbours will be going to the town meeting to request that the town not rezone the property. We believe our neighbourhood is worth preserving. The Fuller Street/Second Avenue green space is a valuable neighbourhood resource which should be preserved. It should not be rezoned.

Regards, Marika Bellerose In search of responsible urban planning During the hot summer months children can be heard playing across the street, people are out playing ball with their dogs, others are coming to tend their gardens at the community garden, some may even be seen sitting beneath the shade of a tree escaping the summer heat. Despite the fact that the town has not maintained the playground equipment, has removed the skating rink, and now seldom even cuts the grass, people still come and walk through the dandelions.

You see, there is no public park anywhere on this side of town. So despite its limitations; despite the lack of sidewalks and benches; despite the poor road maintenance and dim lighting; and despite the area once having been a car dump site, people still come to the open green space on the corner of Fuller Street and Second Avenue.

I could only smile and shrug. “Who walks AROUND a puddle at this time of year?”

I pondered aloud as I turned toward my truck to drive home.

of Fuller, Lincoln and Second Avenue but to the children from the two low rental apartment complexes in the area, the two shelters, seniors’ complexes, high school students on their lunch breaks, and to anyone else who does not have a car, a boat or is unable to walk a great distance.

So I am surprised that despite various areas of open land that could be developed in Sioux Lookout and at a time when, throughout the industrialized world, responsible urban planners are promoting the health benefits of planning green space into urban development, the mayor and town council are proposing that this is the area which should be re-zoned to provide multilevel housing.

A meeting is to take place on March 19, however a call for proposals for developing the area has already gone out and closed. Is this the usual process for how decisions are made? I assume this is one of the questions the mayor and council members will have to answer at the March 19 meeting.

I also look forward to hearing about how they chose this small open piece of land as a site for further residential development when they

are not able to support the current infrastructure for the residences which now exist in this area.

I look forward to learning of the studies they have conducted to ensure that excavation of a car dump site to build housing on will not result in any related health risks to the current or future residents.

I am also curious to hear why the recommendations for expanding this area into a park with playground equipment, possibly a cooling center, maybe a park bench or two seems to have been abandoned.

I look forward to attending the March 19 meeting to learn how these decisions are made, how proposals can go out before bylaws have been passed, and how the town sees these types of actions as sending a message that Sioux Lookout cares about the health and wellbeing of its residents, is a desirable place to live and will attract people to Sioux Lookout rather than drive them away in droves. I am sure I am not the only one who will be looking forward to hearing the answers to these, and other questions.

Local poet receives recognition for her work Geoff Shields Staff Writer

or Sioux Lookout resident, 20-yearold Savannah Polenske, a dream came true when the Thunder Bay Writers Circle published some of her poems in their Thunder - An Anthology publication.

Polenske started writing when she was

“I start writing a poem when I have something bothering me, something that I am really strongly thinking about, and I see where it goes from there.”

She added, “My life has never been boring, so there is always something going on and something

m e e t i n g , accompanied by an early breakfast, was held March 15 at the Nishnawbe - Gamik Friendship Centre by members of the Sioux Lookout and Area Trappers Council.

Items listed on the agenda included the need to hold elections to fill the positions of President, Vice – President, and Secretary.

There have also been concerns raised over a seeming lack of interest in trapping and the fact that membership has been dwindling. Among the current membership, it is felt that there is a need to reboot it and encourage more people to become members.

Membership applications were available at the door for anyone wishing to apply.

Council member Victor Ciurko spoke about this issue. “There are a lot of young people going through trapping courses, which are part of a new program run by the Ontario Fur Managers Association (OFMA).

Under the guardianship of a mentor, you can now be a trapper at 12 years of age and we would like to give them the opportunity to be involved.”

He added, “I have been working with Jennifer Thomas at the NGFC to bring trappers together with people who utilize the resource.

We are hoping to put a workshop together for next year at this time.”

Guest speaker at the meeting was Lori Lamond from the OFMA who is Zone 1A Director for the areas covering Ear Falls, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout. Also a

trapper, she expressed concern. “This trapper council has been down for a while and there are a lot of issues that need to be resolved.

Up here there are a lot of native versus white issues and we have got to get everyone working together. We have got to see that everyone gets along if the trapping industry is to survive.”

She continued, “Trapping is the oldest industry in Canada and we need to keep the next generation of trappers going. We need to educate the public on trapping and keep the interest in the profession alive.”

Lamond concluded, “Everybody has to start working together to make things get along, because we need to make sure that further generations keep the spirit of trapping alive, no matter what your ethnic background is.”

The Dryden tournament was also a success. With the new Lac Seul arena this tournament’s only going to be expanding more and more. It’s just another great year. The organizers, Margaret and Jack (McKay), did a great job. Without them and the other volunteers this tournament wouldn’t be possible.”

Eagles forward Kyler Ackewance was named one of the tournament’s top forwards and said, “It feels good. I can’t even say I accept this award because I do appreciate the fact they thought I was one of the best forwards but there are other guys on my team who also deserve this. They all played topnotch hockey.”

Speaking of the A Side Final, he shared, “Last time we played them they beat us 6-3 and it was a really good game. It was our third game of the day and we just weren’t playing our hockey. Today we played our hockey and we made them play our game and we came out on top at the end of the day.

We worked hard and, like Tyler said, we eliminated their scoring chances and capitalized on ours.”

He enjoyed the tournament. “It’s a great time. It’s always nice to see people I haven’t seen in a long time. People on other teams I’m good friends with, it’s just a really nice time to come together. I love this week.”

Stampede forward Adrian Keeper also received an award for being a top forward and said, “It feels good.”

He said of the A Side Final, “They stopped us at the blue line and played good D.” He said it was a good tournament.

Kenequanash commented on this year’s tournament, “It went exceptionally well considering how many teams came in last minute and other teams that

The Sioux Lookout Public Library was a busy place March 12.

As part of its March Break line-up, the library hosted games Wednesday during which children played board games and video games on the Nintendo Wii. Young library volunteer Nicholas Brohm organized a Magic: The Gathering card tournament that evening and made himself available to teach potential players such as Liam Goodfellow how the game works.

Mike Laverty of the library said many children came to play over the course of the day, noting that providing fun activities for children both from town and visiting during the hockey tournament is a great way to promote the library and its services.

Regional Wellness Response Program Strong today. Stronger tomorrow.

The Regional Wellness Response program was established for First Nations in the Sioux Lookout area due to an increase of opiate drug abuse, increased needle usage and needle sharing, and an increase in the hepatitis C virus.

To respond to priority areas of substance abuse and blood-borne infections, the following services are available: Needle Distribution Program, Community Wellness Development Team, and a Hepatitis C Program.

Needle Distribution Program • Harm reduction strategy working with community groups and northern nursing stations to distribute clean drug use supplies • Reduce unsafe drug use, prevent contracting and transmission of blood-borne infections • Provide opportunity for drug users to connect with health, addiction and other social services

Community Wellness Development Team • Team consisting of a Project Facilitator, Addictions Specialist and Mental Health Specialist • Provide on-going support/consultation to First Nations while they build capacity and community-driven treatment responses to address prescription drug abuse and underlying mental health issues

Hepatitis C Program • Support people infected with, affected by, at risk of and/or vulnerable to Hepatitis C and related infections • Increase access, investigations, support and referrals for treatment • Increase knowledge and awareness to prevent transmission of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) • Reduce stigma associated with drug use and/or having a blood-borne infection • Collaboration with health service providers responding to HCV to ensure those infected are supported throughout their care

SIOUX LOOKOUT ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE SIOUX LOOKOUT WARD 1 (HUDSON) ADVISORY COMMITTEE SIOUX LOOKOUT YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION The Sioux Lookout Environment Committee provides leadership, education and action on environmental issues and provides recommendations to Council regarding Municipal Environmental Sustainability.

The mandate of the Ward 1 (Hudson) Advisory Committee is to provide advice, comments and recommendations to assist Council with specific reference and focus on policies, programs, procedures, operational issues and communications initiatives relating to Ward 1 Residents.

All meetings will be held in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Office, 25 Fifth Avenue and are open to the public, unless otherwise specified.

The Sioux Lookout Youth Development Commission’s broad mandate includes ensuring that youth have a voice in matters that affect their lives; developing “made in Sioux Lookout” programs and services for the youth of our community; and leveraging the experience and expertise of the local youth-serving sector to help develop a new generation of civically-engaged leaders.

Fear not, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout has the answer to your social and recreational woes: “the Hub of What’s Happening!”

A nomination must be signed by the candidate and may be filed in person or by an agent on any day in the year as of January 1, 2014, and anytime, during regular business hours, up to and including September 11, 2014, or on September 12, 2014 (Nomination Day), between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The prescribed nomination filing fee of $200 for mayoral candidates and $100 for other candidates (cash, debit card, money order, or certified cheque) must accompany the nomination form (credit card payments will not be accepted). A nomination must be certified by the Deputy Returning Officer or the Clerk before such person becomes a certified candidate for the office to which he or she is nominated. Forms without an original signature will not be accepted.

The Municipality’s new website (www.siouxlookout.ca) now offers an easily accessible, free, online community events calendar!

In the event there is an insufficient number of certified candidates to fill all positions, nominations will be reopened for the vacant positions only on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The success of this online clearinghouse of community events hinges on its use by local organizations. So, what are you waiting for? Get your events posted online today!

In accordance with Sec. 33.1 of the Municipal Elections Act, potential candidates should refer to Sec. 80 (1) and (2) and Sec. 90 (1-5) of the Act regarding penalties for failure to comply with provisions in the Act relating to election campaign finances.

The community events calendar can be accessed on the Municipality’s new website: http://www.siouxlookout.ca/en/Calendar/Events/SubmitEvent.aspx, and enables local service clubs, organizations, sports leagues – anyone with an event that is open to the public – to post their event information on the calendar.

The submissions can include posters, contact information, links to websites, and the online calendar has the ability to “map the location!”

CONTRACTORS AND HAULERS - LOAD RESTRICTION The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is implementing reduced loading of all trucks on all Municipal rural roads commencing Monday, March 24, 2014 at 8:00 a.m.

The restriction is that no axle on any commercial vehicle shall transmit to the highway, a weight in excess of 5,000 kilograms.

Failure to abide by this load restriction will result in charges being laid under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

New Cedar Bay pavilion to be ready this summer Tim Brody Associate Editor

J

oyce Timpson and 11 other Sioux Lookout residents braved minus 30 degree temperatures March 1 to compete in the 37th Annual Sleeping Giant Loppet in Thunder Bay. Timpson, Friends of Cedar Bay chair, has been taking part in the event for many years, asked friends to pledge her 20 kilometre ski as a fundraiser for the organization.

Timpson shared, “The cold was the worst part. The impediment was the slow snow.

We were double poling

down hills. I could have walked faster.”

Timpson collected more than $1600 in pledges for her ski run.

That money will be used as a buffer fund for the new pavilion to be constructed at Cedar Bay this year.

Anything left over will go to other Cedar Bay initiatives such as a therapeutic riding program at the stable.

Timpson said Friends of Cedar Bay are working with the municipality’s chief building official on the final design and costs for the pavilion project and hope to begin accepting tenders soon.

The pavilion, proposed to be 24 by 36 feet, will be located in the parking area across from the barn and riding ring.

The project has been in the works for several years.

“It came about because we have so many events out there.

We wanted to basically use it as a shelter.

We could offer food services at our events.

People could come in out of the rain, snow or sun, and people could watch things going on at the riding ring. You could have an outdoor classroom. It could be a waiting place for the kids

going to the lake shore for Cedar Bay Day Camp or could just be a nice place to have a picnic,” Timpson said.

“The idea is to have it built for use this summer,” she shared.

Another Friends of Cedar Bay initiative, the cozy cabin, has done well this winter, Timpson said. “The cozy cabin is booming. We had 50 people show up two weekends ago. It’s been really popular this year.”

Anyone visiting the cozy cabin, located on the Cedar Bay lakeshore, will find a warm building complete with blazing woodstove and hot drinks.

Donations are accepted for providing the drinks and keeping the parking lot plowed.

Another fundraiser the Friends of Cedar Bay have been conducting for the past year is a refundable bottle drive.

he seventh annual Pelican Lake Pond Hockey Tournament was held last Saturday. Players in both the Mens and Womens Divisions braved the cold wind that blew across the lake to play against each other in true competitive spirit while expressing sport camaraderie on the ice.

T

he Seniors Activity Centre was a hive of activity on Friday, March 14 when the Meno Ya Win Hospital Auxiliary held its annual Soup & Sandwich Luncheon.

More than 145 people came through the doors

to enjoy a lunch that offered a large variety of sandwiches, soups, and desserts complemented by tea and coffee.

Co-President Eileen Jeffery commented, “The food is always spectacular. There is real variety and, as usual, it is open to anybody who wants to come. The

money we raise from this will go toward patient care and we are looking to purchase two recliner chairs that will fold out into a single bed. These will be geared toward mothers and their children and palliative care.

Secretary and coordinator of the event Lorraine Bennett added,

“It was an excellent turnout and we appreciate all the people who came out to support us.”

The next fundraiser will be Carnation Day. It will take place on May10.

Baskets will be placed in stores for people to make donations to patient care.

A large crowd enjoyed the luncheon.

eams in the Sioux Lookout recreational co-ed volleyball league sent their best male and female players to the rec centre March 10 to take part in the league’s first ever all-star game.

There are eight teams in the league this year.

In the all-star game, players from the Howling Banshees, Ball Breakers, Two Blocks Away, and We Don’t Play With Dolls We Play With Volleyballs made up one team.

Players from Bazinga, Stacked Pelicans, The Duck Empire, and Balls Deep made up the other.

After five close matches the team of the Howling Banshees, Ball Breakers, Two Blocks Away and We Don’t Play With Dolls We Play With Volleyballs won three games to two.

Marc Nielsen, Recreation Centre Program Coordinator, commented on the game.
