National Training Centre Psychology Programme
Ensure our Daily Training Environment is ‘fit for purpose’ and geared towards world’s best results and best practice.
Singapore Gymnastics is very proud of the implementation of the Psychology Programme for its athletes at the National Training Centre (NTC). The programme was developed by the team at Singapore Sports Institute (SSI) and National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) and is an adaption of a Final Year Project by students from Temasek Polytechnic. This programme is a sequential and an ongoing educational programme that will build a creative and positive environment, along with resilient high-performance athletes.
It covers the areas on goal setting, imagery, self-talk, team dynamics, culture and reflection, all while encouraging the athletes to develop a “tool kit” of coping strategies they can take into their daily training environment, competition situations and more importantly their life! The programme starts with our pre-junior athletes at the age of 11 and it follows the athletes' development in the gymnastics pathway.
Singapore Gymnastics took the opportunity during the Circuit Breaker period to launch the programme and Miss Joyce Koh (SSI) and Dr. Shermaine Lou (NYSI) worked through four (4) consecutive sessions with our athletes, with the last session conducted on Saturday, 30 May 2021. The atmosphere in these sessions and the participation of our athletes showed they truly valued the introduction of the programme. These skills are invaluable and will increase their mental game!
We would like to thank and acknowledge the following people who worked on this project with Singapore Gymnastics: Temasek Polytechnic Sharon Teo Li Mian (Supervisor) Fionna Thong (Supervisor) Hui Pei Si Elsie Muhammad Asyraff Muhammad Azri Bin Ramdan Tay Li Ting Iris Yeo Shao Hong Ryan Joyce Koh (Sport Psychologist SSI) Shermaine Lou (Sport Psychologist NYSI)
Singapore Gymnastics is also in the process of developing a nutrition programme for the National Training Centre that will work in synergy with the Psychology programme and would like to thank the continued support of its partners from SSI and NYSI in making these programmes possible, in a true effort to build a sustainable framework for gymnasts in the High-Performance pathway.
