Rhythmic Gymnastics

As a result of the unfortunate Covid-19 crisis that befell the globe, there were severe limitations on the ability of the RG National Training Centre (NTC) and National Squad to travel for competitions in FY20/21. However, athletes and coaches continued to work relentlessly at their craft and competed under special conditions. The following key High-Performance events and activities were organised.

National Squad

The year 2020 was unfortunately affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Shortly before Singapore was put under strict measures on 24 March 2020 which disallowed face-to-face training, the RG National Squad Selection Trial was successfully held on 22 March 2020, under strict SafeManagement Measures.

The FY 20/21 RG National Squad for Individuals comprised 6 Seniors and 16 Junior Individuals. There was a significant increase in the number of National Squad Junior members. It was 2.2 times the number of Junior Individuals who qualified in FY 19/20. This attests to the improvement in quality of gymnasts as well as the growing interest in the RG community in Singapore. Singapore was not spared the impact of Covid-19, and a Circuit Breaker ensued which caused doubt and uncertainty in the community. However, the RG athletes and gymnasts persevered and endured these unusual circumstances by attending online training.

National Training Centre – High Performance Programme

The disruption of face-to face-training in 2020 certainly tested the grit and passion of the RG athletes and coaches alike. However, this untimely disruption also allowed them to reflect and acquire the unique experience and skill of adapting under difficult situations while honing their craft. Despite the absence of overseas competitions, the gradual return to training and the careful management of athlete training loads minimised injury. As the world continues to fight against COVID, the RG community in Singapore will continue to improve the daily training environment and the quality of skills to better prepare the athletes for overseas competitions once the COVID situation improves and the borders are open once again.

It was only on 14 December 2020, when SG held its inaugural Virtual Competition, that RG athletes were able to finally step onto the carpet to perform their routines. All three NTC Teams participated in the 1st Virtual Competition, and they received medals that affirmed their hard work despite Circuit Breaker.
