Membership

With the cancellation of events and opportunities to compete, there was an inevitable decline in the overall sign up of new members, with at least a 35% drop rate in membership renewal and registration for club and associate membership.

One of the membership categories affected by the Covid-19 pandemic was the Associate Member, which declined by 51% from the previous year, which is a clear correlation with the fact that no events were held with spectators in 2020. This Associate membership category comprises predominantly of parents and fans that take up SG membership to gain complimentary access to spectate at National events.

CLUB MEMBERSHIP

Out of 24 affiliated clubs in 2020, 58% had more than 20 athlete members registered with Singapore Gymnastics.

With Gymnastics being one of the sports in Singapore with the highest participation rate coupled with the long term goal of reaching 10,000 members, SG initiated a membership drive which incentivised clubs to encourage their members to sign up for SG’s athlete membership. Following the initiative of acknowledging clubs with the highest number of SG athlete members in 2019, SG introduced a rebate programme that actively rewarded clubs that continuously assist SG’s membership drive. ATHLETE MEMBERSHIP

With the Covid-19 restrictions and the lack of competitions there was an expected decline in the biggest category of members, i.e., Athlete membership. As Singapore entered Phase 3 with Covid-19 restrictions lifted, club operations started to regain momentum. Singapore Gymnastics was able to organise several virtual competitions near the end of 2020 which motivated athletes and coaches to continue training with a competition target. This arrangement also helped see a slight increase in athlete registration particularly towards the end of 2020 with an increase in athlete membership of 5.07% compared to 2019.

TECHNICAL MEMBERSHIP

Technical Membership is a special category of membership with Singapore Gymnastics. It is offered to coaches and judges who have successfully completed required competencies by attending one of Singapore Gymnastics coaching or judging accreditation courses.

Technical membership renewal dropped due to the cancellation of competitions. Competitions are a key driver for coach and judge annual membership as all are required to be current SG technical members to be active at events and enter the field of play.

However, a different source to increase technical membership occurred with the running of Fundamental Coaching courses. While Singapore Gymnastics had to postpone a few courses in the initial phase of the pandemic, it was able to proceed with the three stipulated runs per year. However, from the average 24 participants per course, the courses had to be scaled down to a maximum of 15 participants per course due to the safe management measures in place at the time, reducing the growth rate of new coaches by 40%.
