Mr Chua Thian Poh

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre

“Preserving Traditions, Transcending Culture”

Founded in 1989 by Artistic Director Madam Lim Moi Kim, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Troupe (the “Troupe”) began as an avocational troupe offering Chinese dance courses and performing opportunities for dance enthusiasts. Over the years, the Troupe had made remarkable achievements and contributed significantly to the local performing arts scene. Its biennial dance performance “Wu Zhi Si Cun”, which features a repertoire of original works, was especially well-received by renowned industry practitioners and the general public. As the Troupe became more established, it was frequently invited to perform at prestigious local, as well as overseas events and dance festivals. In 2002, the Troupe participated in the “Liverpool International Theatre Festival” held in Canada, performing its original dance drama “Madam White Snake”. The item clinched “The People’s Choice”, “Best Visual Performance” and “Outstanding Supporting Actress” awards, and was well-loved by the audience. In 2012, the Troupe competed at the Fifteenth Singapore World “Gold Lion Award” Competition and bagged a Top Gold Award and Gold Award for the dance pieces “Season of Sorrow” and “Fond-ling” respectively. In the same year, the Troupe was invited to perform at the “Sibu International Dance Festival” held in Sibu, Malaysia, where the presented items were highly commended and well-received by the locals. In recognition of its enduring efforts to the local arts scene, in 2013, the Troupe was one of the recipients of the Seed Grant from the National Arts Council (NAC). In 2014, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre (SHHKDT) was officially incorporated under the support of the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. With this affirmation by NAC, SHHKDT has stepped up its efforts in bringing its performances to a higher level, and nurturing more promising dancers. To date, SHHKDT has put up three core productions, including dance drama “A Startling Dream” in 2014, “ROOTED | A Triple Bill” and “Journey: Purpose in Motion” in 2015. SHHKDT also tours annually to showcase its works and sought opportunities for exchange. In 2014, SHHKDT participated in the “Third China Cao Yu Culture Week” held in Qianjiang, China, featuring its original dance drama “In The Wilderness” based on this well-known play “The Wilderness”. In 2015, SHHKDT was invited to perform at the Asia Pacific Performing Arts Networks (APPAN) International Symposium “The Wisdom of Age in Performance: The Intangible Heritage of the Asia Pacific” held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. SHHKDT follows close to its mantra of keeping heritage, strengthening traditions and infusing new elements. In its three years of establishment, SHHKDT has continually seeked to innovate new choreography concepts and styles while retaining traditional roots, so as to present more engaging performances to its audiences. In addition, as part of its preservation efforts, SHHKDT is also committed to developing Chinese dance as an accessible art form by delivering dance education and outreach programmes for the wider community. Apart from its annual core production, SHHKDT's other flagship programmes include a showcase platform for budding choreographers "Emergence", two major outdoor community outreach events "Under the BIG Tree" and "Chinese Dance Fiesta", as well as its year-end dance showcase "Taking Flight". This year, SHHKDT is honoured to be one of the recipients of the Major Grant from NAC, and this increased support will only motivate the Theatre to scale greater heights. The Theatre is also a registered charity as well as an Institution of a Public Character (IPC). 4

MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC ADVISOR CUM PLAYWRIGHT

先生

Mr Chong King Ching

MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR CUM CHIEF CHOREOGRAPHER

女士

Ms Lim Moi Kim

An original dance drama, “Life’s A Stage” is inspired by the story of a local Chinese street opera troupe in the mid-twentieth century. It talks of three talented Chinese opera artistes, their intertwined relationships and how their lives revolved about hardship, struggles and betrayal. Simultaneously, the dance drama also reflects the fate of the opera troupe over the years, and how it has revamped. This is an exceptional attempt by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre to weave together the finest of Chinese dance and Chinese opera with other artistic elements to present the life story of these three opera artistes.

Prologue: Life’s A Stage

Choreographers:Neo Jenny, Goh Xiang Tian (Guest Choreographer) Looking at her grandson, Sai Yu, a veteran Chinese opera performer, looks back at the 1950s when she was a member of the professional opera troupe. Her past, filled with struggles, hardship and remorse, remains deeply etched in her mind…

Act 1: At the Opera Troupe

Choreographer: Lim Moi Kim Back then, Sai Yu was one of the star performers in the opera troupe. She was secretly in love with her troupe mate Ah Hua, and they often exchanged glances. On the other hand, Ah Fu, another member of the troupe, admired and had good feelings for Ah Hua. One day, a songstress from the night club, Zhu Hong, visits the troupe and persuades her to switch career, promising her a more luxurious future at the night club.

Act 2: Led Astray

Choreographers:Neo Jenny, Low Ee Chiang (Guest Choreographer), Lydia Lam (Guest Choreographer) Unable to resist her desire for fame and luxury, Sai Yu makes up her mind and decides to leave the opera troupe to join Zhu Hong. Unfortunately, at the night club, the triad leader had his eyes on Sai Yu the moment he saw her, and tries to possess her. Ah Hua and Ah Fu rushes to the night club and tries to save Sai Yu, but are badly beaten up by the triad leader’s men. The triad leader threatens to kill Ah Hua if Sai Yu does not leave with him.

Act 3: Torture and Grief

Choreographer: Neo Jenny Sai Yu struggles and refuses to let the triad leader get

close with her. In a fit of anger, the triad leader bribes Zhu Hong into spiking Sai Yu’s drink. Sai Yu unknowingly falls into their trap and after she loses her consciousness, the triad leader makes his move on her. Ah Hua is devastated that he has lost Sai Yu, and leaves the opera troupe in dejection. He turns to opium consumption in order to relief his immense pain. Ah Fu comes to visit Ah Hua, and in a state of deliria, Ah Hua mistakes Ah Fu for Sai Yu.

Act 4: Remorse and Reunion

Choreographer: Neo Jenny In despair, Sai Yu tries to end her life. However, she is saved by Ah Hua. Reunited, and filled with remorse, Sai Yu and Ah Hua hug tightly and cry. Ah Hua consoles and encourages Sai Yu to forget her unfortunate experience, start afresh, and look forward to a fresh beginning.

Act 5: Imparting and Inheriting

Choreographer: Lim Moi Kim Ah Fu encourages Ah Hua and Sai Yu to start up an amateur opera troupe together with a group of opera enthusiasts, so as to pass down this Chinese traditional culture. Ah Fu had by now become a successful businessman and had the financial capability to support the amateur troupe. A now aged Sai Yu brings her grandsons and young students to visit the troupe.

Finale: Looking Forward

Choreographer: Lim Moi Kim As Chinese opera is gradually declining in popularity, Ah Hua and Sai Yu are even more determined to preserve and promote this art. By grooming the amateur troupe's members and putting up more exquisite opera performances, they hope to be able to pass down valuable Chinese ethics and virtues, as well as inculcate in the younger generation a need to preserve, promote and pass down this art and culture. 11
