Dear Readers, Welcome to this latest edition of SeaBreeze. When the 2020 edition of SeaBreeze went to the printers last year, the world was just waking up to the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, 15 months later, we have all had to adjust to a changed world. The saying “I can’t change the direction of the wind but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination” seems very appropriate at this turning point in our lives; we have all had to adjust our sails. With this in mind, last year along with many others at the height of the lockdown, I decided to buy myself a yacht and enjoy some freedom on the sea.

HAINAN FREE TRADE PORT ANNOUNCED, FIRST YACHT UNDER NEW POLICY DELIVERED Exciting times lie ahead for China’s economic growth as China’s central government has released a master plan on policies to support the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port (Hainan FTP). This has the aim of building Hainan island, on the southern coast of China, into a globally-significant free trade port by 2050. The policies will be rolled out in several stages and are supported by a series of tax and legal system changes. The tax policy element is summarised in the master plan as consisting of “zero-tariffs, low tax rates, a simplified tax system, and an enhanced legal system.” In the first stage, certain categories of imports will be entitled to zero-tariff treatment to support the development of the tourism, e-commerce and logistics industries. Zero-tariff treatment covers equipment imports made by Hainan enterprises for their own use, and imports of vehicles, vessels and aircraft used for transportation and tourism in Hainan. A dutyfree shopping regime will also be in place. In China, Hainan is a popular all-round charter destination and holiday resort due to its combination of beautiful seas, mysterious forests and historical sites all around this famous tropical island. The new app will also enable clients to easily search for new and brokerage yachts to buy throughout Asia.

PHUKET INTRODUCES DIGITAL YACHT QUARANTINE PROGRAMME Thailand has announced the launch of a “Digital Yacht

Quarantine” programme

that aims to attract yacht travellers to Phuket with the option of spending their 14-day quarantine on a yacht. In this new scheme, yacht travellers will be tested by Thai authorities before being given a digital health tracker that will allow officials to monitor their pulse, blood pressure, and body temperature in real time. Visitors are required to wear the health tracker at all times and remain within 10 kilometres of the shore but are otherwise free to spend their quarantine cruising along the shore as they like.

NEW SPECIAL TEMPORARY ENTRY CHARTER LICENCE FOR YACHTS VISITING THAILAND The Thailand Yachting Business Association (TYBA) has announced a new customs regulation that will allow visiting yachts to operate charters within Thailand under clarified arrangements. This significant development has also seen the temporary import allowance for yachts increased to 2.5 years. Under the Navigation in Thai Waters Act, any pleasure and sports vessel can apply as a foreign-flagged vessel to have a special authorisation charter license. Superyachts can easily apply for a yacht charter license with any Thai registered company, such as Simpson Yacht Charter. This news is a huge boost for the local yachting sector and economy!

YACHT DELIVERY JOURNEY

SHIPYARD TO HONG KONG

Simpson Marine regularly helps owners to purchase brand new yachts from Europe, and our team ensures that the delivery process is seamless from start to finish. But perhaps you have wondered how a yacht gets from Europe to Asia? Here we share all the details of what the yacht’s journey from shipyard to Hong Kong involves. ORDER & PLANNING

timing and the equipment required to load and secure the yacht.

INSURANCE & LOADING Once a shipping has been booked, the Sevenstar team will liaise with the build yard and arrange insurance, export customs and sea delivery to the port. “For the handling we have a technical department who check the lifting drawings and make the arrangements for safe lifting and correct equipment, while the operations team ensure that the equipment is made available and in order and coordinate with the ship,” says Massey. “On arrival at the destination we will be in liaison with the Simpson Marine team to clear customs, arrange crew to collect the boat and then unload the yacht.”

regulations and fully inspected to make sure it is in good order and no damage has occurred during shipping. “We will then inspect the yacht for seaworthiness and prepare the yacht for initial startup, checking over all the systems,” says Ronnie Cleland, the Simpson Marine Regional Service Manager in Hong Kong. The checklist is extensive and the yacht is then prepared for offloading into the sea. The team maintains good communication with the dock operations team and surveyor to be sure all are happy before the vessel is lifted off the transport ship.

LAUNCH & SERVICE SUPPORT “The vessel is then lowered towards the water, approximately 300mm from its intended water line, at which point the crew will board it,” says Cleland. “Our engineer will go to the engine room, turn on the batteries, start the generator and main engines and the captain will check the controls.” Once the boat is confirmed as operational it will be lowered into the water and it becomes the full responsibility of Simpson Marine once it enters the water.

COMMISSIONING After arriving at the Simpson Marine service facility, the commissioning process can begin. “The sales department deals with licensing and insurance formalities and will liaise with the customer on the handover procedure and date,” says Cleland. “Meanwhile the Service Department will carry out or organise sub-contractors for all

GOING BEYOND THE BEATEN TRACK WITH SANLORENZO

In recent years the rise in popularity of explorer yachts has been swift, with a large number of expedition designs now available from international yacht builders. Sanlorenzo, one of the world’s leading builders of custom yachts, has more than risen to the challenge of designing this adventurous type of yacht, with its range of explorer yachts obtaining instant success. The Sanlorenzo explorer line-up began with the 42.2m 460EXP, which evolved into the 47m 500EXP, and the exciting new 1000EXP is coming soon. Simpson Marine has already sold two Sanlorenzo 500EXP yachts into Asia, in a sure sign that Asian customers are looking to explore the world beyond their local cruising areas.

Owning a yacht that allows these once-in-a-lifetime journeys is a very special thing, and we are sure that there will be more Asia-based orders for yachts in Sanlorenzo’s explorer range. After all, there can be no better way to see the beauty of the world than from the deck of your own yacht. Perfect for the adventurous of spirit, and ideally suited to cruising the waters of the Asia Pacific and anywhere in the world, the 500EXP is powered by twin CAT C32 Acert engines, allowing her to cruise at 13 knots or reach top speeds of 15 knots. SPECIAL FEATURE | OCEAN

PROTECTION

SIMPSON MARINE

DOING RIGHT, AND DOING BETTER Those with a long term relationship with Simpson Marine will already know how important it is to our team to care for the ocean and the world we live in. Over the past 36 years Simpson Marine has undertaken multiple different initiatives that help to look after the sea, the planet, marine life, and our local communities. From beach clean ups to supporting educational swim programmes, we do our best to give back and do the right thing. It is important to everyone at Simpson Marine to involve ourselves in giving back, and we hope to inspire you too by sharing some of our most impactful projects.

SAYING NO TO SINGLE USE PLASTIC Having seen first-hand how much plastic can spoil our oceans, we have stopped using any single-use plastic at boat shows and events. We are also working hard to eliminate its use from our daily operations across the board. It is our goal to be fully single-use plastic free within two years. Join us and say no to single-use plastic! CLEANING UP OUR WATERS We are personally getting involved in cleaning up the seas and have supported many people doing the same important work. We have backed the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Pick Up Plastic initiative, together with their work to study and restore marine life around Hong Kong. We have also previously sponsored the Rotary Yacht Club of Malaysia’s impressive waterway clean up missions in Langkawi that have brought together over 1000 volunteers at one time – there are now big plans for 2021 and a much-needed mangrove clean up is on the cards.

104

SUPPORTING OUR YOUTH Our children are our future, and we work hard to try and support the next generation of ocean-lovers. Simpson Marine has supported the Splash Foundation for many years now, both financially and by providing spectator boats for Splash Foundation [www. splashfoundation.org] fundraisers. This inspiring organisation provides swimming lessons for underprivileged children and their caregivers, helping to be sure that everyone is able to learn ocean safety and swimming skills no matter what their financial situation. With the youth in mind, our new Sailing Academy in Pattaya will offer sailing courses to underprivileged children and young people who would like to explore this great sport. SHARED VALUES We are working with and supporting a number of marine initiatives that are close to our hearts – they share our values and desire to protect our oceans. One of these is the Oceans For All Foundation [www.oceansforallfoundation.org], based in Phuket, which is a central platform for a number of different projects that work towards marine restoration. These include a shark breeding and release programme, the flagship project of growing corals that are then relocated to reefs around Phuket, and the Bluepass that allows participants to offset their yachting carbon use and thereby support the Foundation’s projects. LONG TERM COMMITMENT TO DOING BETTER As an organisation, Simpson Marine is in it for the long run, and we are fully committed to always doing better and doing right by our oceans. We are working hard on our long term plans for sustainability and our corporate social responsibility (CSR) pledge to ensure that we can have enduring partnerships with all these organisations and their great work. Let’s all work together and make a difference. After all, without our oceans we have nothing.

INSURANCE

YACHT INSURANCE

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

When taking delivery of a yacht, every owner always hopes that no harm will ever befall their new pride and joy. But life can sometimes produce the unexpected.

Despite hoping for the best, you should be sure that you are always covered for any eventuality. It is important to include the cost of insurance in your annual yachting budget… after all it is better to be safe than sorry. Some of the most common yachting insurance claims in Asia are related to damage sustained by lightning strikes. Collisions and paint damage are other frequent causes for an insurance claim. Depending on how you plan to use your yacht, it is sensible to take proper advice on what type of cover to take out, and what claims it will cover. Simpson Marine’s Yacht Management division provides insurance advice and assistance as part of its support package offering. The Simpson Marine team works with trusted insurance specialists who can offer the best insurance coverage to protect your yachting asset should an accident occur. We can also assist with insurance claim process management to save you valuable time. The world of insurance may appear complex, but the best and simplest advice is to make sure you have a good policy in place – should the worst happen, you won’t regret it.

SANLORENZO PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

Year after year Sanlorenzo delivers an exceptional line-up of ‘made to measure’ yachts to the delight of modern yachtsmen. 2020 was no exception, and the yard enjoyed a busy year of work, including the delivery of several yachts into Asia. In Boat International’s 2020 Global Order Book Sanlorenzo topped the rankings with 86 yachts, making it the world’s leading single-brand shipyard in the production of yachts and superyachts over 24 metres in length. This is quite the achievement and much of this is down to Sanlorenzo’s forward-thinking approach and desire to always challenge the norm and push boundaries. In 2020 Sanlorenzo was also named the “Deloitte Best Managed Company” for the third year in a row, which is testament to the visionary leadership of Sanlorenzo’s CEO Massimo Perotti. Sanlorenzo was particularly commended by judges for its fast response to the Covid-19 pandemic and its ability to rapidly and safely resume business.

From designing the world’s first asymmetrical yacht, to partnering with complementary sectors such as the art world, Sanlorenzo is always looking for ways to better its offering and deliver the very best yachts in the world to its customers. In 2020 it revealed three exciting new yachts: the SX112 as the new flagship of the SX range, the new Alloy, and the impressive 62Steel. The 62Steel is particularly noteworthy due to its majestic dimensions and long list of appealing features, worthy of 85 metre+ yachts. Sanlorenzo has three key divisions for its superyacht offering: the Alloy Range, the Steel Range and the Explorer Range, each with its own distinctive appeal. The award-winning SX Crossover range, Sanlorenzo’s innovative take on a cross between traditional flybridge yachts and explorer yachts, continues to be another client favourite, with the SX112 flagship enjoying the same success

MAKING WAVES AND DELIVERING THE UNEXPECTED In 2018 the Sanlorenzo Group expanded its offerings with the creation of Bluegame Yachts, which offers an exciting range of “Sport Utility” yachts. Simpson Marine has enjoyed a long relationship with Sanlorenzo, representing the brand in Asia, and in January 2020 it was proud to be appointed the official Bluegame distributor in Asia.

The Bluegame brand is the perfect extension of the Sanlorenzo offering, and it has been making waves in the mid-size yacht sector all around the world. Simpson Marine has sold several Bluegame models into Asia, with the first BGX70 and BG62 already here in Hong Kong. Bluegame offers two ranges: the BGX range, with the BGX60 and BGX70, and the BG range, with the BG42, BG62 and BG72. Here we take a closer look at the BGX collection, which is the design work of Studio Zuccon International Project, with naval architecture by Lou Codega.

BGX60 The BGX60 is the second model in the BGX range and she made her debut to great acclaim at the Genoa Boat Show 2020. She ensures a close connection with the sea and a modern interior. Combining speed and comfort, this multipurpose vessel is well suited to all kinds of adventures.

BGX60

BGX70 The BGX70 embodies the Bluegame philosophy of breaking free from conventional life, creating a revolutionary concept of yacht that the brand describes as “unexpected.” With influences from the Sanlorenzo SX range apparent in her design, the BGX70 has the wow effect and is perfect for experienced yachtsmen looking for something that stands out in this size bracket. Her critics clearly agree as the BGX70 has taken home several awards including Best Custom Yacht 2020 and Most Avant Garde Yacht 2019.

New 2021 model - BG72

The Bluegame designs are appealing on their own, but the forward-thinking way they are being built is also exciting. Bluegame keeps sustainability and marine conservation at the forefront of all it does. The brand is a proud member of the Blue Marine Foundation, which helps to create marine reserves and establish sustainable fishing. When building yachts Bluegame is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of yachts. Each design has many green solutions on board, and sustainable materials are used where possible. The yard has also developed a direct mould that is made from 80% recycled materials. Sustainability will remain a key focus for the brand moving forwards, with several new schemes in the works. This pedigree brand promises much to be excited about in the coming years and we look forward to seeing the Bluegame fleet in Asia continue to grow.

SHIPYARD FOCUS | FAIRLINE

FAIRLINE

CONNECTING CLIENTS WITH THE BRAND For more than 50 years Fairline Yachts, based in the United Kingdom and exclusively available in Asia through Simpson Marine, has built and delivered luxury motor yachts to lucky clients around the world. The brand is always looking for new ways to personally connect customers with its work, creating tools and campaigns that allow an emotive connection with the yard’s range of boats. In late 2020, East met West as Fairline partnered with The Peninsula hotel in Hong Kong to create a special Riviera of the Orient campaign for customers. The brands have put together a special offering for guests of The Peninsula to be able to enjoy on board charters, bespoke catering, and event collaborations on a Fairline boat. This collaboration was demonstrated at the formal Asia launch of Fairline’s Squadron 50 model, with a special British High Tea served on board. The launch took guests on a cruise from Victoria Harbour to Repulse Bay – once dubbed the ‘Riviera of the Orient’ this beautiful area has played host to many famous names including Marlon Brando and Ernest Hemingway. The Squadron 50 is the perfect setting for a Riviera of the Orient escape, with its contemporary and stylish design and interior inspired by the Mediterranean Riviera.

114

FAIRLINE F//LINE 33 CONFIGURATOR Another way of connecting clients with the Fairline brand was the launch of the Fairline F//Line 33 Configurator in August 2020. This first-of-its-kind online tool allows customers to design their own F//Line 33 using the Configurator, adding all their own specs to see exactly how their dream F//Line 33 might look. There are hundreds of options for customisation including the cockpit layout, engine type, hull colour, interior wood and styling, allowing users to create a design that is truly unique to them. The ability to connect with the design and make it your own is hugely appealing, especially in these current times where it is less possible to connect and discuss yachting projects in person. In December 2020 the Configurator was further enhanced when a video option was added, allowing users to see their creation in motion. The F//Line 33 has proved hugely popular right from Squadron 50

its debut, winning multiple awards. Speedy – reaching up to 50 knots! – it is a stylish and fun way to enjoy the water. Its modern aesthetic made it the perfect partner for this digital tool.

The Highfield Aluminium Boats brand has been a part of the Simpson Marine family for several years now proving very successful and highly demanded. Founded in 2011, in a single decade Highfield has delivered nearly 30,000 boats to over 45 countries – a staggering number that is testament to their popularity and customer brand loyalty. As these numbers suggest, Highfield has proven itself as the world’s leader in the RIB tender sector, with a strong presence in the international 50m+ sector. Part of the reason for this success is the variety, looks and performance of all Highfield models. Performance and strength are at the heart of every Highfield design, with six key ranges – Roll-Up, Ultralite, Classic, Classic Cover, Sport and Patrol – and nearly 40 models on offer. There truly is something for everyone, no matter what their yacht or the intended use. Built to last, Highfield designs have been chosen for some of the world’s most testing events that demand the best from its suppliers, such as the Vendee Globe and Extreme Sailing Series. This durability is paired with an ability to perform in all conditions thanks to their sea-worthy designs. OWNERS’ CORNER |

MIKE SIMPSON

MIKE SIMPSON TAKES OWNERSHIP OF ‘FREEDOM’, A NEW BENETEAU OCEANIS 46.1 IN HONG KONG As yachting continues to grow in popularity in Hong Kong, Simpson Marine’s Founder and Managing Director Mike Simpson has rejoined the ranks of active yachtsmen in the territory after recently taking ownership of a new Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 sailing yacht. With the current travel restrictions in both Hong Kong and wider Asia, Mike is looking forward to making the most of being in Hong Kong by enjoying the delights of time at sea on his beautiful new yacht. Taking ownership of this Oceanis 46.1 was a logical step for Mike, who has an adventurous spirit and a longstanding fondness for sailing and ‘freedom’ at sea. Over the years Mike has sailed on various yachts on most of the seas around the world, being lucky enough to experience countless adventures and fascinating encounters. These adventures span from his early childhood until today, with his most extensive travels having taken place in the 70s and early 80s after his retirement from the British Army.

In fact, it was sailing that first brought Mike to Asia. Back in 1980 he came

Sailing at the Beneteau Cup 2021

However, as Simpson Marine grew as a regional group, Mike had to concentrate on running the business and he had less time to go sailing. Fortunately, he derived great satisfaction from sharing his passion for the sea with others and from helping others to realize their own ‘sailing dreams’ . This has been the driving force for Simpson Marine over the years. It has now been over 20 years since Mike had his own yacht, although he still has the vintage Windy speedboat that he uses to commute from his residence in Lamma to the office in the Aberdeen Marina Club. As Mike explains, he counts himself “very fortunate to be able to go boating twice every day on my way to and from the office, while I am in Hong Kong, but like so many people in lockdown and unable to travel, I decided it was time to get myself a real yacht again and go sailing. There’s no better way to unwind after a busy week at the office than relaxing on the sea.” A perfectly timed opportunity arose when a Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 arrived in Hong Kong in mid-Summer 2020. It had previously been destined for the Philippines market but remained in Hong Kong due to travel restrictions during the pandemic. The yacht was finally declared available for sale by the owner and so, after a thorough inspection and specification check to ensure all was to Mike’s liking, plus a sea trial with one of Simpson Marine’s

MENG & LAGOON 46

Mr Meng, the owner of a Lagoon 46, is a nature lover who truly appreciates the depth of nature’s peacefulness and the beauty of it. A boat perfectly complements his love of outdoor sports, such as diving, fishing, driving, caravanning and motor boating. Meng lives on the boat almost all of the time in Sanya and loves the feeling of being on the sea. Meng first started boating in 2008. At the beginning of his yachting journey, he bought two sports boats and often fished and dove offshore for leisure. In 2013 he came across Lagoon Catamarans and was attracted to their performance and the comfort that came with their spacious living areas. A Lagoon is now his home on the water, and he hopes that more of his friends who love sailing will come along to experience this incredible lifestyle and, together, help with marine conservation. For now, he is sailing around Sanya and Hainan and enjoying the beauty of the island from his floating home.

Sweet times on the paddle board

Which Asian cruising destination do you recommend to your fellow yachtsmen to visit? I am not qualified to talk about this given my non-existent experience, but the Anambas Islands sure look amazing. I think it’s about 30 hours from Singapore so a bit of a trek but should be worth it. What are your sailing plans for the next 2-3 years The plan is two-fold. Firstly, become super well-versed on the handling of the boat and the high intensity sailing in Singapore (by that I mean sailing in a limited area with many obstacles around). Secondly, explore further away and slowly build up the radius in terms of destinations. Also, I would not mind taking a charter in the Mediterranean (in Greece or Turkey) and use my Singapore-gained experience for a few summer holidays. Why did you join the yachting community and what attracted you to this lifestyle? I am from the Netherlands originally and, growing up there, maritime activities are engrained in the Dutch way of life and its history. Looking at Holland now, I realise how much water there is and how they have built a country and infrastructure around it. When I was younger, I used to be on the water and sail in a dinghy and on a “platbodem” (a traditional flat-bottomed sailing ship) and the feeling of being out on the water and sailing is just wonderful. But I also enjoy just being in the marina – sitting on the boat, watching the other boats – there is something very relaxing about it.

I have had many opportunities to pilot several different types of ships – monohull yacht, catamaran, inshore recreational sailing yacht, and offshore transoceanic sailing yacht. Based on my experiences and my family’s considerations, I narrowed down space and sailing comfort as two key factors in my yacht choice. In the past, my wife did not like my previous monohull but after purchasing the Lagoon 42, she has become more enthusiastic about yachting life and frequently wants to hop on board. SPECIAL FEATURE | WOMEN

IN YACHTING.1

WOMEN IN YACHTING

A POWERFUL ASSET

In recent years we have seen more and more women getting involved with yachts. The last decade in particular has seen the gradual reshaping of the marine world, which is now moving on a trajectory towards being more inclusive, diverse and innovative. It has been encouraging to see this change, with a higher percentage of women revolutionising the yachting industry and holding a diverse range of roles, including captain, designer, sailor, and owner, within it. Likewise, we have seen many men championing women in the industry, and it is fantastic to see the good that this support has done.

The field of yacht ownership has seen some particularly noteworthy improvements towards equality, with a growing number of female owners, and many women being important decision makers for new build projects. Women have often played a central role in yacht purchases and builds, with men seeking advice from their significant other, and involving them or asking them to lead the interior design and selection process. However, we are pleased to see an increase in female yacht owners who help to make every decision instead of just being limited to the interior! As more and more women take ownership of yachts of all sizes, they are leading the way for the next generation of owners. At Simpson Marine we have seen first-hand a rise in the numbers of female yacht owners, many of whom are naturally attracted to the onwater freedom and bespoke comfort that a yacht provides. Our team works hard to encourage this trend by providing all the information and resources required for a potential owner (whether female or male!) to make a well-informed decision. Simpson Marine’s team of experts are equipped with industry knowledge and they work hand-in-hand with each client – whatever their gender – throughout every stage of their yacht purchase. We also have the platform, network and also our Yacht Charter division to help incite interest from the younger generation of women who may be intrigued by the idea of owning a yacht. We hope that the number of female yacht owners will only continue to grow as more young girls and women get involved in yachting at all levels. Hong Kong Broker Windie Tsoi with friend

Madame Annette Roux Beneteau, President, Beneteau Foundation

From a business perspective, women are increasingly holding important roles within the yachting world. Some examples from Simpson Marine’s brand portfolio are the partnerships between the world-renowned shipyard Sanlorenzo and award-winning female designers: these include Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, who collaborated on the highly successful Sanlorenzo SD96, and designer Laura Sessa, who created the interior for the innovative SL96A. And who could forget the “First Lady of Yachting,” Madame Annette Beneteau Roux who heads up the Beneteau Group. Likewise, we are seeing more and more female sailors entering and winning yacht races and regattas, and women holding leadership positions on yachts. Female captains and deckhands, CEOs, naval architects, brokers, advisors and more are no longer the exception but are fast becoming the norm. In Simpson Marine’s own team, we have women in leadership positions across the company. With a group of mindful, eco-conscious and socially aware women at the forefront of yachting, we are entering a new era where men and women are equal on the oceans. We look forward to working with both our female and male owners to keep realising all their dreams of being involved in the world of yachts.

in Hong Kong due to the city’s wider travel restrictions, including within China, my home country. Therefore, I did not go back home or travel to Europe with friends like I’m used to. However, despite being “grounded,” it was a busy and happy summer helping my clients get out on their boats and enjoying my time with them and their families. I am a very keen water sports enthusiast so I taught a few of my yacht owner clients and their kids wake surfing, my favourite water sport of the moment. We were lucky with amazing weather in Hong Kong with sunny skies every day, which is unusual for the summers that can get pretty humid and wet. Having sold a few Sanlorenzo yachts in early 2020, I have witnessed a growing community of the Sanlorenzo owners spending time together and arranging nice family gatherings and festivities together with their new boating friends. As such, we had owners of the Sanlorenzo 46Steel, SL86, SL78, SX76 enjoying quality time and building up friendships at sea. This was a very rewarding experience. We organised many themed dinners and beach picnics and enjoyed water sports to create special memories. I hope we can repeat this bonding experience in summer 2021 with more yachts joining the “fleet”.

Wow, what a year to be a yacht broker in Hong Kong. We were extremely fortunate to be so busy and almost every day we were working in one way or another. Luckily this did involve being out on the water and I think one particular highlight was sailing to the Soko Islands with an owner aboard his brand new Lagoon 46. We ended up enjoying a BBQ on his Simpson Marine custom-built grill, which was washed down with a few extremely pleasant bottles of wine. The sail back to Aberdeen under Code 0 was the perfect way to end the day, with 8.5 knots of boat speed in 11 knots of true wind. With all the time spent here in Hong Kong and the opportunity to explore the channels and inlets around Sai Kung I quickly discovered that perhaps some of the quickest, simplest ways to enjoy boating was in the destinations close to home. Some of my fondest memories are of picnicking on Round Island just south of Repulse Bay. Watching the sun set from the beach was superb and I loved the different aspect view of Hong Kong Island looking north to the Southside. Absolutely magical. Roll on this summer is all I can say, with many more boat parties and afternoons in some of the best anchorages in the world.

Early last year, I bought a Highfield 760 Patrol. The boat, a robust and sturdy RIB powered by a 300hp Suzuki outboard, arrived in early summer 2020 – as it turns out, with the global pandemic keeping us in Hong Kong all summer, this was one of the best decisions I ever made. Affectionately called “Don Papa” (named after a dangerously fun-loving brand of rum from the Philippines), the RIB has a top speed of around 45 knots and happily cruises around 30 knots. With a strong hull and plenty of power, no corners of Hong Kong’s amazing waters are out of reach. I’ve seen rare pink dolphins by Tai O (the Western edge of Hong Kong) one day, and then taken friends for a beach picnic in idyllic Double Haven (the Northeast edge of Hong Kong) the next day. The run from Aberdeen to Sai Kung takes only 30-35 minutes at 30 knots. I’m privileged and honoured to be a boat owner, and am always happy when a friend sends me a midweek message asking, “where should we go on your boat this weekend?” I hope to see you on the water soon.

2020 was certainly a year full of changes for everyone. For me, it has been a year of personal growth and I’ve been lucky to have had new adventures exploring my home city. I have been fortunate to spend my time here exploring more remote parts of Hong Kong by boat and also helping our clients get more out of their boating experiences during the difficult months. My own personal adventures have been largely thanks to my colleague Tom Allen who took delivery of a new Highfield 760 RIB in July of last year. This was a very welcome new toy that meant we could spend the summer with friends exploring the amazing boating opportunities on our doorstep. One thing I feel we can all be positive about and enjoy is that many more people have taken to the water last year – we’ve enjoyed being part of that in any way we can. Hong Kong is my home and there is always an adventure to be found here. I am grateful to those who trusted and joined our Simpson Marine family last year, so thank you to you.
