40 Years of YachtingFreedom
Dear Readers,
After a memorable 40-year journey at the helm of Simpson Marine, it is with some emotion that I now announce the sale of my company to Sanlorenzo - the Italian luxury yacht brand we have represented in Asia since 2015 - and coincidentally my long anticipated retirement.
This acquisition marks a strategic shift from the multi-brand dealership strategy of the past to a more focused partnership with Sanlorenzo and Bluegame in the future, still maintaining a diversified portfolio of high-end brands.
This unfortunately means a parting of the ways with Groupe Beneteau after 38 years as their trusted partner in Asia and the end of our dealership agreements for Beneteau sailing and motor yachts, Lagoon catamarans and Aquila catamarans. A shared ‘passion for the sea’ led to the beginning of our close partnership with Beneteau back in 1986. This passion for the sea and the yachting lifestyle has provided the motivation for Simpson Marine to grow into the successful regionwide Yachting Group it is today.
These brands have been cornerstones of our journey, and we at Simpson Marine have warm memories of our collaboration with them. Simpson Marine has also built a strong bond with the owners of these yachts and will continue to look after the servicing and repair of their yachts during and after the transition to new dealers appointed by Groupe Beneteau and Aquila.
Our success over the years, establishing Simpson Marine as Asia’s leading yacht sales, charter, and service group, has been thanks to the
collective effort of over 100 dedicated staff across 11 offices in Asia. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire team for their unwavering dedication and commitment. Their teamwork and professionalism have shaped our legacy. I also extend my warm thanks to the many buyers of our yachts and services without whom we would never have achieved the success and recognition enjoyed by Simpson Marine Group today!
To all our readers, I extend my best wishes and thanks for your ongoing support as I pass the helm to Massimo Perotti, the Chairman of Sanlorenzo and the visionary driving force behind Sanlorenzo’s amazing success and the future growth of Simpson Marine. I have known Max since the late 1980s and have always been impressed with his great energy and drive. Sanlorenzo has exciting plans for the future expansion of Simpson Marine in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond and I am confident that the partnership with Simpson Marine will be mutually rewarding and will lead to great success in the coming years.
Going forward, Seabreeze will continue to be your window into the world of yachting, bringing you stories of luxury, innovation, and adventure on the high seas but understandably with a particular emphasis on the luxury world of Sanlorenzo and Bluegame.
I wish you all fair winds and following seas in the coming years. I shall continue to visit Hong Kong and other parts of Asia where we have offices and in my future capacity as Honorary Chairman I may drop by! So I hope we will have the opportunity to meet again one day.

A Journey Through 1984 Celebrating 40 years of Simpson Marine
In celebration of four remarkable decades of our company’s journey, we invite you on a voyage back through time to the year 1984. Upon the backdrop of groundbreaking global events, technological leaps, and cultural milestones that forever altered the course of history, Simpson Marine set sail and marked a significant turning point for the yachting industry and the yachting scene in Asia.

TED Talks take centre stage
January
The Macintosh revolution
During a frosty dawn in January, the world witnessed a Super Bowl commercial that would echo through the ages. Apple Computer aired its game-changing Super Bowl ad, introducing the Macintosh personal computer, priced at $2,500. Directed by Ridley Scott, the ad portrayed a dystopian future and celebrated the Mac’s arrival as a revolutionary device with a sledgehammerwielding heroine and a dystopian backdrop, this iconic spot left an indelible mark on pop culture. The Macintosh promised to put computing power in the hands of the masses, and it did just that.
Amidst the cosmic silence, a tiny satellite named OSCAR-11 was launched from the Western Test Range at Vandenberg Air Base, in Lompoc, California. This amateur radio satellite was the first to carry a digital communications package into Earth orbit, and the first to be controlled by a CPU running software written in the high-level programming language “Forth”.
The inaugural TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference took place, in February, birthing a global phenomenon. It was a gathering of brilliant minds sharing their ideas, passions, and visions in succinct, electrifying talks; a TED Talk that ignited the spark of curiosity, inspiring generations to come. With surprising accuracy, the first speaker – Nicholas Negroponte – famously predicted CDROMs, video teleconferencing, service kiosks, touchscreens, and his very own effort to provide computers to children in developing countries.

The blockbuster game
In June, the world got hooked on geometric shapes falling from the sky. Tetris, the addictive puzzle game, was invented by Soviet programmer Alexey Pajitnov. Little did he know that those tetrominoes would become a global obsession, uniting gamers across borders. The soundtrack? A hypnotic tune that still echoes in our minds.

The display of women’s power in space
On 25 July, 1984, history unfolded in the cosmos. Svetlana Savitskaya, a Soviet cosmonaut, became the first woman to spacewalk which lasted for 3 hours and 35 minutes. Floating in the void, she defied gravity, proving that space exploration was not just a man’s domain, cutting and welding metals in space along with her colleague Vladimir Dzhanibekov. Her footsteps left an indelible mark on the fabric of space history.

MTV’s visual symphony
In September, the airwaves crackled with neon energy, as MTV held its first Video Music Awards, celebrating the marriage of music and production. It featured Madonna’s iconic “Like a Virgin” performance, in which she emerged from a 17-foot wedding cake and Michael Jackson’s famous moonwalk, inspiring the world to dance to a new rhythm. The award for Video of the Year went to The Cars’ “You Might Think” — which beat Jackson’s “Thriller” for the win.
August
Baseball’s epic marathon
In the sweltering heat of August, baseball fans witnessed the longest Major League Baseball game ever played. The Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers battled for 25 innings at Comiskey Park. The game lasted over eight hours and set a record for the longest MLB Game. As the moon rose and fell, players swung their bats, and fans held their breath. It was a marathon of grit, determination, and a love for the game.

The birth of Simpson Marine
Mike Simpson opens Charter Boats Hong Kong across the Aberdeen Marina Club, Hong Kong, which he later renames Simpson Marine, as recommended by his friend who thought that Mike should give it his name and make it sound more “marine”. By the end of the 1980’s the company had been appointed regional distributor for several leading yacht brands, and had recruited an expanding team of sales and after sales service professionals around the region. And the rest is history!
As we raise our glasses to 40 years, let’s not only reminisce nostalgic memories but let’s gaze ahead with anticipation. The next four decades beckon - a Macintosh moment awaits, a breakthrough that will redefine the industry and ignite our imagination.

The Simpson Marine Group Summit brought together more than 90 Simpson Marine team members from all offices across the Asia-Pacific region for its first gathering at its headquarters in Hong Kong from 5 to 7 March 2024. Three significant milestones were commemorated during the Summit: our 40 years of business, the retirement of our company’s founder, Mike Simpson, and the acquisition by Sanlorenzo.

5 March : The prelude, a day of strategy and anticipation
The three-day program commenced with a morning coffee meeting of Country Managers, who shared their locally adapted experiences for best practices and growth strategies. In the afternoon, the sales and support teams from all offices gathered for a focused workshop on the brands represented by Simpson Marine, including Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline, and the latest addition: Nautor Swan.

The emotional handover
The event commenced with great anticipation as we officially welcomed our new Chairman, Cav. Massimo Perotti, to the Simpson Marine family. After a welcoming speech and the signing ceremony, the company’s founder, Mike Simpson, handed over the helm to Massimo Perotti, marking a symbolic and emotional transition of the company into new hands.
Massimo’s inspiring speech touched on Sanlorenzo’s DNA and the strategic business pillars that have been a solid foundation of the company’s business model and success for the past 60+ years of operations.
Following his speech, Simpson Marine’s newly appointed Executive Chairman, Luca Cristino, shared insights into Sanlorenzo’s global and APAC strategy. His focus spanned Simpson Marine’s past, present, and future growth opportunities. To conclude the morning, Richard Allen, who became the Group’s Chief Operating Officer, addressed the Simpson Marine organisational changes and updates.
Elevating client experiences and expertise
The day unfolded with immersive workshops, focusing on two critical areas:
Customer journey and clienteling: At the core of our success lies a deep understanding of our clients’ needs. These workshops explored strategies to enhance client relationships, elevate service standards, and consistently exceed expectations.
Team building, communication & culture workshop: the team delved into effective team-building strategies, communication techniques, and the importance of fostering a positive organisational culture. The insights gained will undoubtedly contribute to Simpson Marine’s continued success and cohesive work environment.
An evening of prosperity and unity
As the sun dipped below the Hong Kong skyline, the atmosphere transformed. The outdoor patio, boasting an unbeatable sea view, came alive with vibrant colours, live music, and laughter. The cocktail party featured a mesmerising lion and dragon dance performance –an auspicious symbol of prosperity, success, and unity. It was a fitting celebration of our shared achievements.
The presentation of long service awards and the presentation of a series of retirement and symbolic thank-you gifts to Mike Simpson, including a photo book with wishes from the team, along with a trophy of 40 Years of Yachting Freedom, highlighted the evening’s festivities.
As the night wore on, everyone danced and sang the night away.

SANLORENZO SL106A
Premieres at Gold Coast Motor Festival ROUND-UP OF ASIA
In the vibrant celebration of the Hong Kong Gold Coast’s 30th anniversary, Sanlorenzo Asia takes the spotlight with the grand reveal of the Sanlorenzo SL106 Asymmetric at the Gold Coast Motor Festival. This spectacular event, a fusion of automobile and yacht splendor, brought together aficionados from Hong Kong and Shenzhen to witness a showcase of everything from prized classic cars to the most coveted super and hypercars.
Over the course of two days, the SL106A, renowned for its innovative asymmetrical layout and unprecedented volumes on her size, captivated a steady flow of enthusiasts. Amidst the impressive lineup, this vessel distinguished itself with graceful lines, practical yet stylish design, and an undeniable allure that
appealed to both seasoned maritime connoisseurs and newcomers to the luxury yachting scene. The Sanlorenzo SL78 was also present alongside the SL106A, allowing visitors to the show to experience the Sanlorenzo difference.
Unlike traditional yachts with symmetrical layouts, the SL106A introduces an innovative asymmetry in its structure. For instance, on the port side, the exterior decks have been repurposed as interior space, leaving only one side passageway on the starboard side. This clever asymmetrical configuration not only enhances the yacht’s aesthetic appeal but also maximises functionality, offering a unique and efficient use of space for both relaxation and accommodation.

The expansive bow area offers a 215 sqaure-foot space with integrated sun loungers and a convertible dinette, which can be reached through a dedicated access from the 320 sqaure-foot owner’s cabin. The foredeck is also connected to the flybridge by portside stairs.
At the festival’s core, the SL106A not only radiated its own elegance but also symbolised Sanlorenzo’s unwavering commitment to redefining maritime experiences. Its presence went beyond a mere showcase; it was a tangible manifestation of contemporary yacht design, etching an indelible impression in the minds of all fortunate enough to witness its debut. As the biggest yacht on display, the SL106A was undoubtedly the star of the show.

SANLORENZO ASIA AT WEST BUND ART & DESIGN FAIR
34
ROUND-UP OF | ASIA Sanlorenzo‘s Collectors Lounge at West Bund Art & Design Fair in Shanghai, featuring Alixe Fu’s “Deep Blue Love”
Angel Zhou, Vice-President China, welcomes guests at Sanlorenzo Lounge
In a resounding debut at the prestigious 2023 Shanghai West Bund Art & Design Fair, Sanlorenzo Asia orchestrated a visual symphony in collaboration with our partner, Wei Gallery. Marking our inaugural participation in this annual fair, Sanlorenzo Asia unveiled the captivating artwork “Deep Blue Love” by Alixe Fu.
In an immersive showcase, Sanlorenzo Asia commissioned Alixe Fu to create an oceanic panorama that transcends traditional boundaries between art and corporate responsibility. “Deep Blue Love” stands as a triptych, where the artist delves into the profound connection between humanity and nature, with a particular focus on the perilous impact of plastic waste on our oceans. Crafted with a blend of oil painting on canvas and assorted materials, Fu’s latest masterpiece is both a testament to his artistic prowess and a poignant commentary on the global environmental crisis.
As Alixe Fu’s brushstrokes narrate a tale of ecological urgency, he underscores the staggering reality that over 12.7 million tonnes of plastic waste infiltrate our oceans annually, disrupting marine ecosystems and endangering the entire food chain. In a unique fusion of environmental advocacy and artistic expression, Fu employs “Deep Blue Love” as a powerful call to action, urging a collective reduction in plastic consumption to safeguard our planet.
This artistic endeavor seamlessly aligns with Sanlorenzo’s overarching “Road to 2030” strategy, a commitment rooted in clean energies and sustainability. The installation serves not only as a visual feast for art enthusiasts but as a compelling statement on Sanlorenzo’s dedication to ecological responsibility.
This foray into the vibrant artistic milieu of China, exemplified by the Shanghai West Bund Art & Design Fair, underscores Sanlorenzo’s global strategy. As the brand gracefully occupies more space in the cultural narrative of the Far East, this marriage of art and sustainability serves as a testament to Sanlorenzo’s commitment to both the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of its vision.

The Sanlorenzo SX88 was the first model in the series of crossover yachts designed by Sanlorenzo. She offers an expansive saloon with large floor to ceiling windows affording panoramic views and minimising the division between the interior and exterior of the yacht. A feature unique to the SX88 is the removal of a helm station from the main deck, which allows an owner the space and flexibility to choose from a number of different layouts. On the flybridge, the helm position can be entirely enclosed and air-conditioned with automatically operated side windows, leaving the vast main deck free from stern to bow.
The transom design on this 27-metre yacht allows for the storage of multiple water toys and a tender up to 4.5 metres. When the toys are launched using the integrated crane, the area converts into a spacious 30m2 beach club, complete with hydraulic swim platform.
The Hong Kong International Boat Show, with its four-day program, provided the perfect backdrop for maritime enthusiasts and prospective yacht owners to witness the elegance and craftsmanship synonymous with Sanlorenzo.
As a symbol of resilience in the face of challenging times, the event celebrated the return of in-person boat shows, emphasizing the significance of shared experiences within the yachting community. Sanlorenzo’s participation in the Hong Kong International Boat Show reinforces its dedication to bringing unparalleled yachting excellence to the vibrant maritime landscape of Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.

Massimo Perotti, Chairman of Sanlorenzo at his office in La Spezia
MASSIMO PEROTTI SHARES HIS VISION FOR SANLORENZO IN ASIA-PACIFIC
“We expect significant expansion in Asia-Pacific, Southeast Asia and the Chinese markets over the next ten years,” says Cav. Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo. “It’s a high potential and currently underserved area where we would like to extend our presence.”
And extend its presence Sanlorenzo most definitely has done. Last year APAC commanded more than 10% of the Group’s total net revenues, and the acquisition of Simpson Marine will fortify and expand its position in the region. “Simpson Marine is a well-established and widely respected company in the APAC region, with tremendous potential for further expansion,” Perotti continues. “After 40 years of operations, it has developed a highly loyal team of around 140 professionals who are among the best in their respective fields, making it a sound and promising investment in line with our long-term strategic vision.”
Simpson Marine, founded in 1984 by Mike Simpson. has successfully represented Sanlorenzo throughout Asia since 2015, from its eleven offices operating out of seven countries. It runs a major yacht sales and service operation. “The acquisition of Simpson Marine is key for our growth strategy in the APAC market,” says Perotti. “Simpson Marine is certainly essential for reinforcing our brand development in the region, and we have every intention of leveraging its experience, expertise, and credibility in the market. Together we will also
reap the benefits of untapped synergistic potential to become market leaders in sustainable luxury yachting, guided by a shared vision and the aim to revolutionise the industry.”
Innovation and novel technologies are serious trend drivers in APAC, and enquiries for the most eco-friendly equipment, low-impact propulsion systems and state-of-the-art navigation systems are all commonplace. “All these features are part of the offering provided by the Sanlorenzo Group through its brands and product lines, and we are confident that our yachts will meet the needs of APAC customers very effectively,” Perotti confirms.
The needs and expectations of clients in any region are incredibly subjective and can vary based on cultural, economic, and lifestyle factors, in addition to personal preferences. However, to speak generally, customers in the region see yachts as symbols of luxury, capable of enhancing their status, and so often seek prestigious and exclusive yacht models. Custom, tailor-made designs are always highly sought after –something Sanlorenzo delivers in spades.
M

“We have a rich Italian nautical heritage written into our DNA; owners recognise our ability to provide them with a product that reflects their desires and is also technologically advanced, with an increasing focus on sustainability,” says Perotti. It is upon these two pillars – the values of ‘Made in Italy’ and the specific philosophy with which Sanlorenzo operates in the yachting market – that we will build our success in the APAC region.”
Massimo Perotti has built Sanlorenzo from a company with an annual revenue of €42m to €840m in less than two decades. Under his leadership, the company has grown exponentially, employing around 800 staff at its five shipyards and working with hundreds more through a strategic network of partnerships. It now boasts a production capacity equal to 100,000 square metres and has announced plans to add a further 10 models to its portfolio.
And even with this staggering growth, Sanlorenzo has not once betrayed its roots. Each yacht it delivers is the result of intelligent research aimed at technological innovation and is sculpted through highly specialised production techniques and the best craftsmanship and skills from its territories. A heady mix that has driven Sanlorenzo’s success and international recognition.
“Beautiful tailoring, refined and understated luxury, and meticulously detailed and curated designs are the cornerstones of our philosophy,” Perotti explains. “We only produce a limited number of vessels each year and have continuous dialogues with our clients to propose excellent products, not only in terms of quality and design but also in terms of technological content and real sustainability.”

A true case in point is the forthcoming 50Steel, the first yacht to house a green methanol fuel cell system, developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy. “The 50Steel will be the world’s first superyacht project to accommodate the modular ‘Reformer – Fuel Cell’ system, capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity to power all the yacht’s hotel systems, and eventually recharge the batteries, without storing hydrogen on board,” Perotti says. “This is one more significant step toward our decarbonisation goals.”
Sanlorenzo hasn’t only been a disrupter when it comes to sustainability, it’s also driven trends across many aspects of yacht design, as Perotti explains. “We were the instigators of asymmetric yachts and yachts featuring terraces on the sea. One of our biggest achievements is the Bluegame multihull BGM75, a luxury emblem opening up a new yachting segment. Now, with our 50Steel, we are about to revolutionise the yachting world under the banner of sustainability.”
Perotti stresses the importance of his team, without which the achievements Sanlorenzo has reached would not be possible. “I am convinced that teamwork is at the root of every success, and that is why the people are at the heart of Sanlorenzo. In a market like ours, where quality is everything, we must have the best people, focus on their expertise, and invest in their development.”
This mentality will be at the core of future developments in APAC and drive the growth that Sanlorenzo and Simpson Marine will undoubtedly experience together.

LUCA SANTELLA ON BLUEGAME’S INNOVATIONS & TECHNOLOGIES
Luca Santella is a dreamer. His desk faces outward, overlooking the final frontier of yacht design. Less interested in the present state of things, Santella focuses on what could be. This forward-facing vision led to the birth of one of the most innovative brands: BLUEGAME.
The Bluegame brand was unplanned. Santella, who had just completed an architectural degree in Florence with honours, found himself back at sea skippering a large sailing yacht. The owner, in need of a smaller day boat, commissioned Santella for the project. The result was a one-off 55 foot custom walkaround motor yacht, built in Cape Town in 2004. It was a global sensation.
Carlo C. Bonomi invested in Santella. Together, they deepened the lines of the 55 foot walkaround motor yacht, incorporated a large aft platform, and added a
reverse windshield, thus creating the first BG range. Four years later in 2018, Sanlorenzo took a stake in the company and Bluegame exploded. Today, Luca Santella’s role is Head of Production Strategy at Bluegame, and he continues to defy trends.
“There isn’t a typical day in my role,” Santella explains. “Curiosity, vision, dreaming and being updated on what the whole world is inventing daily is part of my job. It is also a big part of my personality, which helps us surf the wave of innovation.”

Bluegame’s 10-metre hydrofoil chase boat for America’s Cup racing teams
Santella has ensured the brand’s beloved unorthodox approach to design has remained unwavering. Every year is an exciting one for Bluegame – but this year it’s pushed the needle of innovation even further, with the delivery of BGH.
BGH is a high-performance, 10-metre hydrogen hydro-foiling catamaran, capable of speeds up to 50 knots with a range of 180 miles, at zero emissions. It is equipped with dual units of EODev’s REXH2® technology alongside three 63kWh batteries to power its operations and will serve as a support vessel for the New York’s American Magic and the French team, the Orient Express, during the 2024 edition of the America’s Cup.
“This project marks the beginning of a new era. In some ways, we feel akin to car manufacturers at the end of the 1900s: applying a completely new hydrogen power technology to a futuristic vessel with foils,” says Santella. “It has been a great journey so far, and it will be even greater in a few weeks when we start the sea trials. Foiling on the water at 50 knots in a sustainable way will be a very emotional feeling and a great reward for all of us who have been working on this project for the last year and a half.”
seabreeze 51
BGM75
Master Cabin on BGM75
And Bluegame has announced that these innovations will find their way into the market in the not-sodistant future with the BGF45. “We’ve transferred so much of our experience and investments from the HSV into this user-friendly sustainable catamaran,” Santella explains. “The BGF45 is a high-performance boat which, thanks to its light construction and foil design, combines sustainability and comfort despite its incredible performance of 40 knots of max speed and 30 knots cruising.”
The BGF45 rides on the coattails of Bluegame’s new BGM series, which debuted at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival with the BGM75. The BGM series is significant in that it represents the first multihull by the brand and its owning company, Sanlorenzo. “It is only because of teamwork, great collaborations, experience and strategic vision that we’ve been able to make this yacht possible,” adds Santella. Being Bluegame, the BGM series is no ordinary catamaran and it comfortably sits between the mono- and multihull markets. It has a one-piece hull that has a 50:35 length-to-beam ratio – beamier than a monohull, yet more dynamic on the water. The design is sleek and brings all the characteristics and styling of the monohulls from the BG range.
“There is always something new for Bluegame on the drawing board: I can say that from now on I hope there will also be some sailing stuff to work on,” he continues. “It would be a fantastic way to round out my personal experience and dive into my sailing past. I wish to keep enjoying my job as I have been doing for the last twenty years thanks to the fantastic projects I have been working on and coming to work every day with a big smile on my face looking forward to new challenges,” adds Santella.

CASA SANLORENZO
CAPITALISING THE ART IN ARTISAN
54
CASA
If you want to drive change, you need to spark curiosity. And to spark curiosity you need to be emotive, you need to offer a new perspective – you need art.
Sanlorenzo Group is in the business of experiences. It’s on a continual quest to find new ways of experiencing the sea and to maximise the enjoyment for its clients across its full range of products, from all brands within the Group. And to say it does this well would be an understatement, considering it’s one of the world’s most prolific (and arguably most successful) luxury yacht builders. Year-on-year it exceeds projected market growth, and in 2023 alone it delivered an impressive 80 yachts. Yet the Group does not stop here.
And rightly so. Some serious challenges need to be addressed – not industry issues, but global ones. The climate crisis is the most pressing, and Sanlorenzo is at the forefront, challenging the possible; fighting for a brighter, greener future. The Italian builder has written sustainability into its identity and the technical progress it’s making towards net-zero is well documented. Its roadmap is extensive and this year is a key milestone for the Group, as it prepares to launch the pioneering Superyacht to utilise green methanol.
But what is less documented is the intangible and more philosophical ground it covers to stimulate change. It has an entire division dedicated to sparking curiosity and invoking emotive responses to tackle the big social and cultural challenges of today. It’s doing this through art.

Sculptural awareness
Sanlorenzo is an artisan in its own right. It sculpts luxury vessels that are built by specialised craftspeople who spend years finessing each masterpiece. One of its 60-65-metre motor yachts takes roughly 500,000 hours of work to complete, with at least 180 people involved in the build. Every Sanlorenzo product is pedigree and carries the esteemed “Made in Italy” stamp, with every detail created in-house or locally. The reputable names amongst its team include Piero Lissoni, Rodolfo Dordoni, Citterio Viel, Patricia Urquiola and Studio Liaigre.
Sanlorenzo is also heavily involved in the esteemed global fine art circuits. Sanlorenzo Arts has collaborated with leading cultural institutions such as La Triennale di Milano, with the installation “Sanlorenzo: Il mare a Milano” which won the Compasso d’Oro ADI 2020 and Tornabuoni Arte; FuoriSalone, with the installation “From shipyard to courtyard” curated by Piero Lissoni. Sanlorenzo was also the main sponsor of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale Arte 2022 and was the Institutional Patron of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice between 2020 to 2022.
But where it’s most active is with Art Basel, with which it signed an exclusive agreement in 2018 as a global partner across all four of its annual showcases: Miami Beach, Hong Kong, Paris and Basel. Sanlorenzo challenges overt status quos year-on-year at Art Basel, seeking the emotive holy grail. It uses art to creatively bridge the gap between innovations at its shipyards and wider social challenges. “La Macchina Impossibile”, an installation by Sanlorenzo’s Piero Lissoni, is one of the latest examples.
SPECIAL FEATURE | CASA SANLORENZO 56
Showcased during Milan Design Week 2023 at the University of Milan, Lissoni interpreted Sanlorenzo’s unwavering commitment to reducing yachts’ environmental impact. “La Macchina Impossibile” told the story of the innovative hydrogen technology Sanlorenzo is developing with Siemens Energy in an interplay of moving propellers and gears. Its reception sparked many meaningful conversations about novel fuel sources – conversations which will only be overshadowed by the forthcoming 50Steel, the yacht that utilises the same technologies.
Sanlorenzo Arts will have his headquarters in Venice, with the grand inauguration of Casa Sanlorenzo this year during the Biennale of Art. Located near the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in the south of the city, the palatial headquarters will foster intelligent conversation, standing as a bastion of culture and artistic betterment.
And being located in Venice, it underscores a strong commitment to the city’s future, symbolising hope for a more sustainable global future.
More details about Sanlorenzo Arts were revealed during the Hong Kong Art Basel 2024.
Fondazione Sanlorenzo
Driven by aspirations of change, Massimo Perotti, Chairman of Sanlorenzo, founded Sanlorenzo Arts and Fondazione Sanlorenzo in 2021. The latter, conceived to uplift the lesser-known Italian islands and their inhabitants, extends vital financial aid to projects fostering sociocultural, economic growth, and environmental stewardship.

THE ADVENT OF HYDROGEN AND THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE YACHTING
There are watershed years and then there’s 2024. The year for sustainable yachting – and it’ll be launched not once, but twice by the Sanlorenzo Group.
The anticipation is palpable; the stage is set, the lights dimmed and we are all waiting for the curtains to rise in front of two shipyards on the Italian coastline for the big reveals. For the catalyst that will propel us to a brighter, greener future. And the Sanlorenzo Group being the Sanlorenzo Group, we’re not talking about anything in half measures. We’re talking highperformance, pinnacle of luxury, hydrogen-powered vessels. Does it get more exciting?
SPECIAL FEATURE | SUSTAINABLE YACHTING

50Steel superyacht, powered with reformer methanol system producing 100% clean energy for hotellerie
The world’s first hydrogen-powered chase boat is going to fly – quite literally fly. It will lift onto hydrofoils and gun at an eye-watering 50 knots for a staggering 180 nautical miles. And being equipped with methanol fuel cells that generate hydrogen, it will fly with zero emissions. The chase boat is an Italian pedigree – built in Ameglia, Italy, by Bluegame, a brand of Sanlorenzo – founded on a belief and actualised because of the rewriting of protocol on the other side of the Atlantic.
For the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, which as fate would have it, is being held in Europe, each team needs to have a fast, innovative and sustainable chase boat. A chase boat that can be commissioned into the race. What a project for Bluegame to undertake; a project that fits nicely within Sanlorenzo’s Road to 2030 strategy. And so the Bluegame American Cup HSV-chase boat was born. Bluegame has partnered with American Magic and the 10-metre hydrogen chase boat will be lacquered in the team’s metallic Aegean blue and support American Magic throughout the regatta. The fuel cell system and necessary type C containment tank have been recognised and certified by Lloyd’s Register.
The 10-metre chase boat is laying the groundwork for an even larger project scheduled for 2026. Bluegame is simultaneously working on a 20-metre tender, which uses the same hydrogen fuel cells and will be coupled with the latest generation of Volvo Penta hybrid engines. The tender is being built for American
Magic and is expected to have an 80 nautical mile range, travelling at 8 knots for 10 hours – again, with zero emissions. It won’t have the incredible 50 knot high speeds, but what it does offer is something much more exciting: replicability.
Tenders are in high demand. And with a new offering for a zero-emission variant, we might see some serious traction in this space. There is a major infrastructure hurdle, which needs not only the industry to get behind but all maritime and governments to back. We’re currently undergoing an electrification revolution which stemmed from F1, so why not a hydrogen one from the America’s Cup?
The novel fuel system of the BLUEGAME American Cup HSV-chase
seabreeze 59
Bluegame is driving change in the multihull market with a new disruptive project of a 10-metre hydrogen chase boat for the America’s Cup’s American Magic and Orient Express Racing teams
boat originates from a partnership signed in 2018 between the Sanlorenzo Group and Siemens Energy. Years of research and more than €5 million investment have made hydrogen in yachting a reality. And the Sanlonrenzo Group isn’t one to oscillate between offerings – its entire product offering is typically dual-pronged and very accurate: performance and luxury. This philosophy has very much underpinned the research being conducted. And we can expect to see the same hydrogen-fuelled innovations in a superyacht package soon – 2024 soon.
Sanlorenzo, has invested in the first unit of an all-new series: the 50Steel. Unlike other yachts in the global fleet, the 50Steel will be equipped with a modular Reformer Fuel Cell system capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity to power the onboard hotel load.
The 50Steel will feature what the shipyard calls a hidden engine room (HER), an innovative concept that creates a new boat layout. The engine room has an innovative arrangement as all the propulsion and technical hardware is located on a single level on the under lower deck, creating a direct connection between the aft beach area and guest area.
The 50Steel, designed by Zuccon International Project, offers accommodation for 10 guests and is built around conviviality. An abundance of exterior space is split over five levels with plenty of al fresco lounging options. The Ocean Lounge is sublime. It’s home to a large swimming pool and three hydraulic wings extend the living space aft, port and starboard, and create a 120 square-metre beach club. A phenomenal size for a 50-metre superyacht.
Sanlorenzo will launch the 50Steel later this year and has every intention of continuing the series and incorporating the HER feature into other series. This launch is also the foundation stone for Sanlorenzo’s vision to deliver the first hydrogen-powered superyacht by 2030.
Hydrogen isn’t a silver bullet to a global challenge, it’s one of the pioneering solutions. Can we say the future is hydrogen? Not yet; and not for certain. But what we can say is that the hydrogen future is here today – and we’re all grateful for it.

THE HIGH VALUE-ADDED SERVICE OF SANLORENZO CHARTER FLEET
The champagne celebrations of a Sanlorenzo delivery doesn’t signify the end of a relationship between the shipyard and the client – far from it. They signify a new beginning. Sanlorenzo has a lifelong promise of care and compassion; both written in and upheld by its High-end Services division.
“Our High-end Services, exclusive to Sanlorenzo clients, offer a unique range of 360° services which have never before been offered in the luxury yachting sector,” says Ferruccio Rossi, Executive Director & General Manager of Sanlorenzo. “Offering high value-added services to customers represents a strong competitive advantage for Sanlorenzo’s value proposition, increasing customer loyalty and strengthening the brand’s position at the very top of the luxury segment.”
SPECIAL FEATURE | SANLORENZO CHARTER 62
This 360° service provides Sanlorenzo owners peace of mind through tailor-made leasing and financing packages, maintenance, refit, and lifetime care and access to the Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet. The service is offered for all Sanlorenzo clients – not only those who build at the yard but also those who have purchased their yacht on the brokerage market. The Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet offers owners financial earnings, without the necessity of finding and vetting the many global brokerage companies to find the one that works best for them.
The charter market is currently booming and is showing no signs of cooling down. Ferruccio Rossi sees this increase in demand as a consequence of two years of restricted travel due to pandemic related regulations. “Clients’ appetite for vacationing abroad increased when the regulations were lifted, and increasing numbers looked to venture out onto yacht charters around the world,” says Rossi. “The 2022/23 charter season surpassed market expectations, with bookings exceeding those of 2021, which was considered to be a record-breaking year.”
Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet gives its clients direct access to this market. But considering the charter potential of a vessel is also beneficial for resale value. A commercially classified yacht by definition will attract more buyers; if it’s not classified, then the yacht would need a substantial refit to get it charter-ready. And charter performance can also sway opinion; if there’s documented evidence that their vessel has strong commercial returns, it can be much more desirable for a discerning owner.
“Charter represents the opportunity to offset increasing ownership costs and is the best way to ensure the yacht is always maintained in pristine condition thanks to an active and professionally motivated crew,” Rossi continues. “Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet offers charterers a comprehensive service and those who choose Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet can enjoy undeniable advantages, not least the peace of mind and security of trusting their holiday to the most prestigious duo in the yacht building and charter industry: Sanlorenzo and Equinoxe Yachts.”
seabreeze 63
Sanlorenzo Group acquired Equinoxe Yachts in late 2022, which has brought more than 35 years of charter management and consultancy experience into the Group’s folds. “We selected Equinoxe Yachts as our operational partner because it’s one of the industry’s foremost consultants on the international yachting market and epitomises Italian excellence in the field,” says Rossi. “It has a business that spans 10,000 charter contracts, over 500 yacht sales and is a founding member of the Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association (MYBA) and a member of the Charter Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA), two of the world’s leading sector associations.”
For charter guests, Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet guarantees a vessel and crew of the highest quality, vetted through processes and standards set by MYBA. There is then assurance for both owner and charter clients that the experience and service will be exceptional and the yacht maintained impeccably throughout the season. With such an expansive network and portfolio, Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet can provide replacement vessels in the unlikely event of last-minute unavailability. It also offers a comprehensive consultancy service, covering legal, administrative, and management aspects.
“The distinctive feature of Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet lies in both the unique services offered to Sanlorenzo yacht owners who choose to rent their vessels, leveraging a rapidly growing market, and in the comprehensive conditions made available to charterers,” continues Rossi. “The latter can enjoy the excellence of Sanlorenzo models and
savour their holidays aboard yachts that represent the pinnacle of ‘Made in Italy’ in the yachting sector and stand at the forefront in terms of both innovation and sustainability.”
Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet can be found worldwide and charter clients can enjoy peace-of-mind travel aboard a Sanlorenzo in all the key yachting hotspots. “The Mediterranean is the most popular summer season destination and accounts for 80% of global bookings, with Greece, France, Italy, and Croatia leading the way,” says Rossi. “We’re expanding our fleet in the region, but also growing outside of Europe and expanding in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, two regions that see a lot of potential.”
The best point of contact for owners looking to leverage financial returns from their Sanlorenzo asset by listing their yacht through Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet, is their brand representative. We would be more than happy to talk you through the advantages and features of the Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet.

Six decades of hard work and expertise have been poured into crafting these extraordinary yachts – more than 1000 of which have touched water to date – with the builder having scaled up the ranks to reach second place in the Global Order Book rankings.
Although there are a plethora of reasons behind the company’s success to date, one of these can be found in the relationship with the owner which has remained consistent since the days of Sanlorenzo’s foundation in 1958 in the historic centre of shipmaking in Tuscany, Limite sull’Arno.
Whatever the shifting fashions of the day, every Sanlorenzo is crafted to the highest possible quality and with a true haute couture spirit, tailored exactly to the owner’s desires.

Sanlorenzo superyacht facility in La Spezia
What better way to witness this process for yourself than to pay the shipyard a visit? With four Italian production sites separated by a distance of just 50 kilometres, spanning La Spezia, Ameglia, Viareggio and Massa, plus its latest acquisition in Arbatax (Sardinia island) you can take the opportunity to see every detail of the extraordinary workmanship for yourself –before soaking up some of the country’s most sought-after scenic destinations and activities.
Visiting the shipyards
Sanlorenzo’s headquarters can be found in Ameglia on the banks of the river Magra, nestled inside the breathtaking Montemarcello-Magra nature reserve. Now used for the building of three of Sanlorenzo’s yacht ranges (composite vessels, measuring up to 100 feet in length), as well as housing the shipyard’s design, marketing and sales departments, this has represented the beating heart of Sanlorenzo since 1999.
Sanlorenzo’s superyacht division, where vessels between 4473 metres come to life, is in port city of La Spezia, Liguria. This includes a beautifully renovated historical building dating back to the late 1800s which hosts the Sanlorenzo executive offices, with the whole facility boasting an overall area of 50,000 square metres – including large service areas and more than 500 linear metres of docks.
The yacht division has three additional sites available for visiting, located in Tuscany: Viareggio – home to the longest sandy beaches in Italy – where the assembly and outfitting of composite yachts above 100 feet takes place, Massa in the north, close to the Apuan Alps, where the research centre on composite materials and new models can be found, and the recently-purchased site in Arbatax, Sardinia, where Sanlorenzo’s small composite parts are produced before being distributed to its other yacht business unit facilities.
Whichever facility you choose to see, you are guaranteed a warm welcome from Sanlorenzo’s dedicated team who will be delighted to talk you through the best of the local beauty spots and attractions once you have enjoyed the best of Italian hospitality (including plenty of coffee) at the shipyard. We run through just a few of them on the next page.

Exploring Liguria
As well as being home to two of Sanlorenzo’s facilities, the crescent-shaped region of Liguria contains a vast number of picture-perfect tourist destinations. The rugged and breathtaking centuries-old UNESCO World Heritage seaside villages of the Cinque Terre need little introduction and are a true must-see – but as is the less well-known old fisherman’s village of Portovenere, which remains under the radar of most visitors.
In addition, the elegant Santa Margherita is a colourful fishing village and coastal resort which has the advantage of being quieter than some of its neighbours on the Rivera, whilst still boasting plenty of sites of historical interest, including its 16th-century castle and the 17th-century Basilica di Santa Margherita.
Despite its small size, Portofino is one of the most popular resort towns on the Italian Riviera and is peppered with fantastic art galleries, boutiques, cafes and restaurants on every corner, as well as offering strong diving and hiking options. Less well-known, and therefore more relaxed, is the charming coastal town of Rapallo – enjoy a cable car ride, exceptional gastronomic experiences and being just half an hour away by car from Portofino.
Hotels to enjoy in the area include: the Grand Hotel Portovenere; The Poet in La Spezia; and Byron in Lerici and Golfo dei Poeti Relais & Spa in Montemarcello. Our top restaurant recommendation is the outstanding La Lucerna di Ferro in the seaside village of Bocca di Magra, which is just a six minute drive from Sanlorenzo’s headquarters.

Exploring Tuscany
Just a short drive from Sanlorenzo’s Massa facility is the ancient village of Colonnata in the Apuan Alps which is famous for its both spectacular marble quarries and its delicacy of ‘lard’ . For those interested in the best in retail therapy and luxury, a visit to the ‘Queen of the Italian Rivera’ – Forte dei Marmi – is the ideal day out, with high-end boutiques, cocktail bars and beach clubs aplenty. If Colonnata has piqued your interest in marble, you can also stop off at nearby Pietrasanta, which has attracted numerous artists to visit, thanks to its exceptional stone, including Joan Miró, Henry Moore, and Damien Hirst.
With its thousand-year history and reputation as an artistic treasure trove featuring outstanding Romanesque and Gothic churches, no trip to Tuscany would be complete without a stop-off in Pisa to see the iconic, UNESCO World Heritage site, Piazza dei Miracoli and its leaning tower, before losing yourself in the medieval streets. Enjoy living life at new heights on the 11-metre walkway of the Walls and if you wish to continue your boating adventure further, ensure you don’t miss the fascinating and Historical Ships museum which showcases seven boats dating back to the Roman era.
Located on the banks of the River Arno, Florence (or Firenze) is not only the most populated city in Tuscany, but also one of its most popular destinations, thanks to its reputation as the ‘cradle of the Renaissance’. Packed full of masterpieces of Renaissance art and culture and must-see attractions such as the Florence Cathedral (Duomo), the Ponte Vecchio and the Basilica San Miniato al Monte, make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to absorb the true magnificence of this city.
Famous as the birthplace of Puccini, the Tuscan gem of Lucca offers a true slice of history. Come and drink in such wonders as the San Michele in Foro church – a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture – before stopping for a well-earned gelato or aperitif in sight of its beautifully-preserved Renaissance walls.
Tuscany is also full to the brim with phenomenal restaurants. To name just a few: Lorenzo, Bistrot, Parco di villa Grey, Lux Lucis, La Magnolia and Franco Mare in Forte dei Marmi; Filippo and Alex in Pietrasanta and Il piccolo principe, Lunasia and Romano in Viareggio.
Hotels to enjoy in the area include: Grand Hotel Imperiale, Principe, Augustus Hotel & Resort and Byron in Forte dei Marmi and the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte in Viareggio.
Sardinia
The rugged island of Sardinia, lying between Italian Sicily and French Corsica, where Sanlorenzo’s latest facility can be found, is a Mediterranean paradise chock full of glamour, myth, tradition and beautiful scenery. With a quarter of the island designated as either a National Park or other protected reserve territory, come and enjoy its unspoiled beauty at any time of year.
As for accommodation, nestled away in a secluded corner of the Forte Village – the sumptuously decorated Hotel Castello offers a true taste of Sardinian luxury only a few minutes away from white sandy beaches. Furter inland, Il Borgo dell’Arcangelo in Tuili is perfectly placed for visits to numerous archaelogical sites of interest, as well as trips to see the Sardinia’s Giara plateau with its elegant and famous wild horses. Gastronomic treats can be found all over the island, including Il Rifugio in Nuoro, Abbamele Osteria in Mamoiada and Nautilius, Forte della Maddalenetta,
If that hasn’t yet whetted your appetite for Italian travel, other cities which you may wish to see and which are well served by international airports include historic Rome, the achingly stylish Milan, the canals of Venice, the elegant and refined Turin, Shakespeare’s famous Verona, Naples and the stunning islands of Capri and Ischia.

HOW SIMPSON SUPERYACHTS IS READY FOR THE ASIA-PACIFIC ASCENT
Asia–Pacific is the new Mediterranean. Let’s rephrase that: Asia-Pacific is the new old Mediterranean. Virgin cruising grounds, idyllic and empty coves, crystal waters and undisturbed roaming in abundance. A rich tapestry of cultures, biodiversity and marine life and a culinary tour–de–force. Everything you could want from a superyacht experience.
The region is also incredibly diverse. It encompasses 62 counties, with more than 30,000 secluded islands between the Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia regions alone, and an ocean that covers a third of the world’s surface. It’s huge. Two tricky thorns have deterred many visitors, though: an underdeveloped network and infrastructure. But this is changing – rapidly.
72
Simpson Marine has spent four decades working on the first. It has built an impressive network throughout the AsiaPacific region and now operates from 11 offices in seven different countries. Single-handedly, it has created a robust infrastructure for the industry. In recent years, key players have weighed into the region, expanding this network exponentially.
Local economies are also booming, and many estimate that China will overtake the US in less than three years to have the world’s largest GDP. These margins are forecasted to increase exponentially in the subsequent years. There are then many South and Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand and Singapore, with the fastest-growing countries. Added to that is a general relaxation on heavy taxation; Hainan is a case in point, which will become a fully operating free port trade by 2025.
Regarding tourism, there has been a considerable spike in superyacht visitors, with over 100 vessels larger than 30 metres cruising the Asia-Pacific region last season. There was also a 10% increase in registrations for this category in Hong Kong alone. It’s an exciting time for the Asia-Pacific.
James Clayton, Sales Director at Simpson Superyachts is full of spirit as he explains this sudden rush on the region. “Just look at the geography,” Clayton says, smiling. “There are quite literally tens of thousands of gorgeous, secluded islands to discover in Asia and unspoilt virgin waters, ripe for exploration. Superyacht owners are territorial and the lack of privacy in the Mediterranean and Caribbean waters is taking its toll on many. Pull into a beautiful Asian bay and you’ll find yourself alone – isn’t that what the superyacht dream is all about?”

Simpson Superyachts was founded just last year and is primed to actualise this emerging dream for both local and international clientele. “We’re a brokerage company that offers impartial advice and manages the design of new builds, pre-owned sales, charter, servicing, and management of superyachts,” Clayton explains. “As an organisation, we pride ourselves on being dynamic and client-centric.”
Since joining Simpson Superyachts, Clayton has been incredibly diligent in bringing two key elements to the team: intelligence and information. “Real-time intel is often lacking in this industry and yachts typically are shared off-market to select brokers ahead of their public announcement. I’m fortunate to be one of the few. My connections are beneficial for Simpson Superyachts clients in this regard. We got in the trenches to understand yacht design, trends and the performance of different boats over others. This mentality I’ve embedded in Simpson Marine and continual education is high on my agenda.”
It has proven to be a successful business model, with numerous sales within the first few months of operations, including the second hull from the Sanlorenzo Alloy series. When asked whether this was the
typical yacht profile for the Asian market, Clayton explained, “Quality is vital; buyers love brands, beautiful designs and brilliance. Catamarans are popular, so too are sailing yachts. But the convergence in yacht design that meets the demands of a global market – Asia included. And we have the best inventory here that I’ve seen for at least five years. Boats we could have only dreamed about two or three years ago because of a lack of inventory.”
But despite this convergence of yacht design that caters to a global appetite, the sheer size of Asia Pacific and that troublesome infrastructural-shaped thorn still throw up a few challenges. “Cruising Asia-Pacific is incredibly diverse and there are incredible waters around more developed regions like Thailand and Hong Kong, yet for those looking to travel as far as Indonesia and the Philippines – which many do! – larger vessels are more practical,” explains Clayton. “You need a degree of self-sufficiency as there isn’t a large availability of marinas, which smaller boats are reliant upon. We need more of them; they’re slowly coming but more investment is necessary.”
SPECIAL FEATURE | SIMPSON SUPERYACHTS 74
James Clayton at Monaco Yacht Show 2023
It’s just a matter of time; global interest is there for the region. This year, leading media house SuperYacht Times will host the inaugural Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit. The event will raise awareness, and potential investment, to overcome these challenges.
When the necessary infrastructure is in place, regional tourism will flourish. Perhaps even more interesting, though, is that the AsiaPacific has an opportunity to become a leader in sustainability by building not only an impressive network of marinas but also a network that meets the needs of the yachts of tomorrow. Sanlorenzo will launch the world’s first superyacht with green methanol fuel cell technologies this year, and there are high expectations that this is a trend that will take off.
“We need to have an electrical architecture – there’s no doubt about it,” says Clayton. The forthcoming marinas must have rapid charging stations, but it would also be sensible to have methanol storage. I strongly believe that when these technologies become readily available, this will be the fuel of the future. Being set up for this would be incredibly wise.”
Steps are being taken to develop this infrastructure, and the region is by no means inaccessible. It is beloved by many, and its confident growth, both locally and globally, is a testament to this.
“Asia Pacific is a growing market and I envision it expanding up to five times its size within the next decade,” Clayton says. “Our vision is that Simpson Superyachts will grow in tangent with this regional explosion. The ethos we hold is through partnerships and collective action – together we’re stronger.”

SPECIAL FEATURE | YACHT CHARTER

Long and luscious days can be spent aboard a superyacht that has a swimming pool or hot tub onboard. For those who truly love the water, sometimes being surrounded by it on all sides just isn’t enough. Superyachts can feature anything from a plunge pool or smaller 4-person hot tub to a lap pool, deep enough to dive into, for guests’ use. If somewhere to take a dip is important to you, then you should look for a charter that offers this wonderful feature.
Luxury yachts often feature either a sauna or a steam room, sometimes both. For those who want a relaxing and purifying time on the water, a sauna or steam room could be a vital factor in elevating their experience. Sauna or steam rooms can also be retrofitted on larger yachts if you are looking to increase the level of quality features that a vessel has to offer.
Entertainment also knows no end. Whether it’s a games room with a pool table, a quality card table for those dedicated poker players or a complete onboard cinema, you’ll find a luxury yacht in our fleet that meets your needs. Onboard entertainment is important for long evenings or seldom rainy days, allowing guests the freedom to enjoy the elegant spaces provided onboard the yacht you choose to charter.
Another incredible aspect of yacht charter is the opportunity it offers to explore the marine world, below the water’s surface. Many luxury yachts are well-stocked with scuba gear for qualified divers to enjoy. For those who are new to the sport, diving instructors can be arranged to train and certify guests during their charter.
From a fleet of tenders to whisk you away to your favourite destinations on land when your yacht is at anchor to high-energy Jet Skis, Seabobs, wake surfs and even water-powered jet packs, there is no shortage of motorised water toys that can be offered with superyacht charter. Most charters charge additionally for using motorised water vessels, but some charters may incorporate the use of them in a package price.
Best of all, a superyacht is the perfect base for exploring Asia’s stunning waters and your captain and crew will know the secret and serene spots for you to enjoy. Dive into clear blue waters, explore a deserted island, sample local culture, or watch a sunset from the deck of your yacht with a cold glass of champagne in hand. Whatever your dream charter is, our superyacht charter team can help you create it.
And if you are open to venturing further afield, SYC can take you to popular destinations such as the Caribbean, Mediterranean or South Pacific. For expedition-seeking explorers at heart, a new trend of an Expedition charter to Alaska or the South Pole is now in steady growth and a few notable superyachts are available for such technical expeditions.

Unfolding a new chapter with the SANLORENZO SX76/
As I sit aboard my newly acquired Sanlorenzo SX76, my mind drifts back to the year 2020, the inception of my yachting adventure. The world, grappling with the constraints of a global pandemic, afforded me a rare opportunity – to venture into the uncharted waters of something extraordinary.
Inspired to embark on an IYT Yachtmaster course in Bangkok, I was immediately captivated by the allure of sailing. Amid challenging times, the freedom of cruising the open sea on my previous sailing yacht became a cherished escape. It wasn’t long before I upgraded to a Fairline Squadron 68 in Pattaya by June 2022, revelling in leisurely afternoons anchored off the picturesque islands of Pattaya.
As my yachting journey with Simpson Marine unfolded, the logical progression led me to Sanlorenzo. The first encounter with my new
SX76 occurred at the Singapore Yacht Show in April 2023, and it didn’t take long for me to seal the deal shortly after the show’s conclusion. Entrusting my captain, who had been with me from the Fairline days, and Howard Prime, my reliable broker, they navigated the yacht from Singapore to its current haven in Ao Po Grand Marina, Phuket. While I missed the physical presence during this journey, Howard’s updates, complete with photos and short video clips, seamlessly transported me along the route – from the berths in Port Dickson and Pangkor to the enchanting Langkawi and, finally, to the shores of Phuket.
Since then, my maritime escapades have taken me through the enchanting waters of Phangna Bay, unveiling the beauty of its islands, and along the burgeoning coastline of Phuket. From the vantage point of my yacht, I’ve witnessed the rise of opulent sea-view properties, a spectacle reserved for those cruising the waves.

With panoramic views that rival the allure of the main deck, I find solace and joy in the upper reaches of my yacht. The well-shaded and incredibly comfortable bow area allows me to lounge in no fewer than six separate spots, ensuring that even with friends on board, a bit of “me time” is effortlessly achieved.
As I continue to explore the islands around Phuket, my yachting journey is a narrative yet to unfold - each wave, each sunset, and every distant horizon promising new chapters in this odyssey of luxury and exploration.
I am excited for the next chapter in my yachting journey, and to be able to spend more time with my family on board.

OUR BEST YACHTING EXPERIENCE
Purchasing a yacht from Simpson Marine has been one of the best things we have done for our family as it has allowed us to create special memories not only within the family but also with friends. We decided to take the opportunity during the beginning months of COVID-19. The idea of spending the whole summer in Hong Kong without anything to do was scary, so we decided to rent a boat for the summer and this led us to discover the vast beaches of Sai Kung and the beauty of the maritime lifestyle. From there, we bought a small boat, which we later traded in relatively quickly for a Bluegame yacht as we realised how important having space was for us. Additionally, this change let us discover that we like faster boats. Our current yacht can go up to 40 knots while our previous boat would go up to around 15-20 knots so it was definitely a large increase and made a significant difference as it helped us quickly cut down the travel time.
Although we have created a multitude of amazing memories while on our yacht, the best ones have been the evenings in which we moored in Snake Bay, Sai Kung. We would stay the whole night and it was always fascinating watching everyone leave while we stayed, away from the bustle of the city, feeling like we were the only people in the world. Then, the next day, we would go for a morning swim and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful views.
Our favourite feature of our yacht is the open space which allows us to stay extremely close to the water and just be there with the sea. We also love the speed of the boat, of course, and the Italian design as they make the experience just as much more enjoyable.
The most valuable lesson we learned while going out to the ocean is: Safety first, always. Boat captains most likely always have the most experience and know exactly how to keep you safe so listening to them can be extremely beneficial.
We wouldn’t be able to narrow our favourite things about owning a yacht down to one but our top favourites include getting to name our yacht, the ceremony Simpson Marine did for us when we got it, the sense that it is our own boat and can choose when to use it, and finally the fact that in Hong Kong, once you decide, you can be on your boat extremely quickly. Hong Kong is also very unique as it allows you to have marinas all around you, giving you a vast variety of options for a weekend getaway.
Our advice to someone who is considering purchasing a yacht is to go for it and use it as much as you can. You’ll cherish the memories you make with it.

BLUEGAME BG42 OUR SERENE GETAWAY
As the founder and designer of an up-and-coming contemporary fashion label, like many who live here, the workload of a week can be quite hectic. My husband has always been a sea-loving person, so being able to wander out despite being in the midst of the bustling city is our ultimate relaxation getaway.
As much as we enjoy day cruising, we also love spending the night onboard. There’s something about being completely surrounded by darkness, anchored in a calm and quiet bay, accompanied by our beloved Labrador’s occasional snoring! We savour the experience of having a glass (or two!) of wine and chatting under the stars before peacefully drifting off to sleep. Yes, even in this dense city of Hong Kong, these moments of tranquillity are within reach.

Life onboard a POWER CAT
Our recently sold Aquila 44 is exceptionally comfortable and an ideal cruiser. It has an innovative layout that offers a fullbeam owner’s suite and two additional staterooms. Expansive glazing wraps the main saloon for 360-degree horizon views.
We joined an owner of one to find out about their life at sea.
What inspired you to take ownership of this particular yacht?
There are several reasons why we decided to buy an Aquila 44. We wanted a stable motor vessel, primarily for commuting between our Lamma Island Beach House, our Apartment in Centra and an office in Tsim Sha Tsui. Hong Kong has an abundance of public piers, allowing us to travel between all these locations conveniently.
Additionally, as a sportswear company owner, I like to hold meetings onboard and my guests usually enjoy the experience a lot. The stability and versatility of the catamaran are perfect for my needs; it’s easy to get on and off board, and manoeuvring is intuitive and easy. We’re happy with it so far.
Which islands do you enjoy cruising to in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is home to us and we cruise the region a great deal; I’ve lost count of the number of islands we’ve been to. We particularly enjoy the east side of Hong Kong because of how clean the water is there. Being members of Aberdeen Boat Club, we also like to go between Lamma and Middle Island. This convenient route offers many different beaches and locations to drop anchor for lunch and activities, such as dinghy rides.
What is your favourite part of yachting?
The freedom to explore the beautiful beaches in Hong Kong. Whether it’s Sai Kung or one of the many paradisiacal beaches, we love anchoring our boat and enjoying dining near the water’s edge. Hong Kong is also well-connected and you can access places such as Tsim Sha Tsui and Central within 30 minutes. Paddleboarding in ideal conditions adds to the enjoyment.
Do you have a memorable experience that you’d like to share?
One of my most memorable trips was to Sai Kung. We spent a few days cruising the region, enjoying many water activities. We’ve revisited many times to celebrate birthdays and special occasions on company boat trips. The calm waters, beautiful weather, and delicious food made the Sai Kung trips truly enjoyable. Staying at the WM Hotel and exploring Aberdeen always enhances the trip. Sai Kung, I would say, is my favourite destination.

Where do you spend the most time onboard?
I spend most time at the stern of the boat, on the aft deck. It’s functional and a versatile space, ideal for socialising, and listening to music. The aft deck also offers direct and gentle access to the water for swimming and paddleboarding. The meeting table, the dining table and the bedrooms are also very pleasant. There are certainly larger yachts out there, but our Aquila 44 is perfect for us. We’re very content and pleased with it.
Do you have any big trips or excursions planned?
We plan to continue to use our boat as we are now – conveniently in Hong Kong Harbor, exploring nearby beaches, deserted spots, nice restaurants, and interesting places. While we don’t have plans for longer trips to other Asian destinations, the boat adds a unique dimension to our lives. It’s not just about being in the city or on an island; we also live inbetween on the boat.
The experience of sailing in Hong Kong, especially during special occasions like the Chinese New Year, is truly remarkable. The skyline, Sai Kung, and the entire view from the water are breathtaking.
How would you describe the experience working with Simpson Marine?
Working with May Choi from Simpson Marine has been excellent. She’s straightforward, reliable, and supportive; we appreciate her efficiency and fair approach. The experience Simpson Marine offers is enjoyable and it’s safe to say that you guys are doing great. If we ever consider buying a larger boat or need assistance in the future, we will undoubtedly turn to Simpson Marine.

LUCA CRISTINO
Welcome to Simpson Marine
It’s with heartfelt warmth that we announce the appointment of Luca Cristino as Executive Chairman of Simpson Marine.
Luca Cristino, born in 1966 in Turin, Italy, has been a prominent name in Italian shipbuilding for three decades – most of which was spent with Azimut. Cristino joined Azimut in 1994 and assumed the role of Sales Director in 2001, a position he held for seven years before moving from sales to operations when a new shipyard opened in Sardinia.
By 2010, Cristino had become Deputy Director of Yachtique, a service division that sits under the Azimut | Benetti Group. He managed three legal entities (Marina di Varazze, Fraser Yachts and Royal Yacht Club in Moscow), as well as three business units (Lusben for refit, styling lounge for décor and client service, financial services for insurance and boat financing).
Cristino then joined Sanlorenzo in 2018 as Vice President of sales until 2024, when he embarks on another adventure as Executive Chairman at Simpson Marine. We caught up with Cristino to hear all about it.
What inspired the move to assume the role of Executive Chairman at Simpson Marine?
I love taking on new challenges and embracing the spirit of adventure – call me crazy! This new role broadens my horizons and creates many opportunities to see new things, meet new people and embrace new cultures. Bring it on!
100
Luca Cristino, Executive Chairman of Simpson Marine
How did you perceive Simpson Marine and the APAC region before you decided to join the company?
Simpson Marine has developed a strong and loyal team over the past four decades. The people are great, easy to work with and impassioned about yachts and the customer experience. And Asia Pacific is a gorgeous region with a sound infrastructure and customer base, ripe with potential for future growth and development. There isn’t a more exciting region to be at the moment.
What can we expect from you in your new role?
I will offer my expertise to help facilitate continual growth in a market that is expected to enter a cooling-down period soon. Simpson Marine already has an outstanding team spirit, but there’s always space for development – in any company. I like to foster an environment that inspires excellence, where everybody is happy and motivated and outperforming what they love doing.
What are the initial key drivers for Simpson Marine in Asia-Pacific in the coming years?
Our interest is in further developing the services that we offer – and hopefully add a few more to the portfolio. This will be part of a strategy to refine the client experience for existing and new customers. We also plan to consolidate our customer database and open new markets.
Which Asian destination do you enjoy the most – and why?
That’s a tough question. I’ve travelled extensively across the continent and spent time in Hong Kong, Singapore, Shenzhen, Sanya, Phuket, Pattaya, Port Dickenson, Taiwan and Jakarta. They’re all unique, nice and fascinating places. Picking a favourite is an impossible task.
When you’re not at your desk, where can we find you?
Hopefully, either on my bicycle or on a ski slope! I grew up in a small village in the Alps, not too far from Torino, and have a fond affinity for all winter sports. Otherwise, you might find me with a book, listening to music (heavy metal only!), or spending quality time with my family.
Have you set yourself any 2024 goals?
I’m looking forward to having fun with my team at Simpson Marine and achieving great results together. I will travel back and forth from Italy when possible to spend time with my family as much as possible. So, my big 2024 goal: survive the jetlag!

A NEW AND EXCITING ERA FOR SIMPSON MARINE
2024 is a year we won’t forget. We’re celebrating two key milestones: the 40th anniversary of Simpson Marine and the acquisition by Sanlorenzo S.p.A. On a personal note, it’s also my 12th year with Simpson Marine, and it’s been a privilege to lead the company as Mike Simpson concentrated on selling the business.
As we usher in an exciting new era with a concentrated focus on top luxury brands Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Nautor Swan, and Fairline, we will sadly be ending several long-term partnerships. Brands like Beneteau and Lagoon, which I have worked with for over 30 years, will be parting ways with us. We remain committed to looking after our existing owners and are thrilled to represent many new cuttingedge models – which you’ll read about in this edition of Seabreeze.
When Simpson Marine started representing Sanlorenzo in 2015, there were just two yachts from the luxury builder in Asia-Pacific.
Now we’re proud to see more than 75 cruising the region. This is phenomenal and a testament to the vision of Massimo Perotti and his team. Coupled with the hard work of the entire Simpson Marine team ensures first-class service to all our Sanlorenzo owners.
We will continue to grow with Sanlorenzo and are looking forward to expanding our Sanlorenzo representation into new markets and territories throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
As a keen sailor, I’m delighted to see Nautor Swan back with Simpson Marine. Nautor Swan is the Sanlorenzo of the sailing world with iconic models, strong heritage, and limited availability. I know the heritage well; I regularly sail on a Swan 53 in Hong Kong and have sold a number of new and used Swans over the years. It will be good to see this partnership develops.
TEAM ON THE SEA | RICHARD ALLEN 102
I am also looking forward to attending Swan regattas with the Hong Kong crew who recently took line honors in the 2023 Round the Island Race in Hong Kong. No mean feat with several hundred yachts out on the water!
We have just had our first Group Simpson Marine Summit in Hong Kong, with over 90 colleagues for a three-day conference. We shared the plan and vision for the company direction for the next 40 years. It was great to have all the team come to Hong Kong, and to see the energy in the room as Massimo Perotti and the company management team set out their vision for the future.
Having been with the company for the last 12 years and seen the business and individuals flourish, it’s great to see the existing Management team stay together during the transition of the business from Mike to Sanlorenzo. This is the great strength we have and why Simpson Marine has remained the number one yachting company in Asia-Pacific and will remain so.
I often get asked if I tire of being on the water, which I definitely don’t. Weekends are spent either racing my Etchells yacht at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club or out on my new Axopar speed boat, catching up with friends or exploring the islands of Hong Kong.
My holidays are also either linked with visits to some of our offices or on a yacht charter either in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Last year, my wife and I went sailing in Sardinia with some friends, which was stunning and a very different experience from a Greek or Croatian charter. While cruising the beautiful coastline of Sardinia, we were surrounded by superyachts, and the Sanlorenzos were easy to spot with their iconic lines. There were several of our Asian owners in the region, taking the opportunity to cruise the summer in the Mediterranean before we shipped their yachts to Asia. A great way to take delivery of your new yacht!
However much I love the Mediterranean, the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean remain my favorite charter destination. I have had many great holidays there over the years and am looking forward to going back in the next year or so. Charter holidays are some of the best holidays I have ever had; I strongly recommend you give it a go. They provide lifelong memories you will never forget.
2024 is going to be an exciting year, and I wish to thank our Simpson Marine customers for your continued support, for trusting us to give you your yachting experiences. We believe in our Yachting Freedom promise and want to make your experience as pleasant as possible. If you think we can do more to help you on your yachting journey, please let me know. We appreciate your feedback and opinions.
See you on the water,

Exploring underwater realms
Having sold many yachts to very keen yachtsmen, and active water sports enthusiasts, I’m blessed to spend many days at sea every year, in some of the best Asian or global destinations. But there is one destination that I want to highlight: the Maldives.
My first diving trip in the region was with a group of friends over a week in March 2024, with an itinerary covering five atolls (Male, Vaavu, Meemu, Thaa and Laamu) on the Indian Ocean.
We boarded our dive boat in Male and cruised towards Vaavu to start our diving programme. We were blessed to descend to depths lower than 40 metres to see
the marvels of the sea, including schools of green turtles, manta rays, reef sharks, nurse and whale sharks, hammerheads, schools of exotic fishes and superb soft coral formations. Composed of 26 atolls, the Maldives’s surface is 95% water so one may only imagine the extent of rich underwater sceneries available for exploration.
During the trip, we tasted local seafood delicacies from our daily catches but mainly enjoyed our time together, peacefully interacting with life below the surface. If I’m not boating or diving (either scuba- or freediving), I’m typically either wake surfing, skiing (in winter) or working on my arts and philosophy interests.

The shakedown cruise: From Sanlorenzo to Sardinia Working in yachting means we’re fortunate to occasionally relish in the experience of actually cruising on board. Summer 2023 presented me with such an opportunity.
Following the handover of the new model Sanlorenzo SD118, I was invited on board for the initial cruise! We departed the Sanlorenzo shipyard for an ambitious first journey – nonstop to Bonifacio, Corsica. With a Sanlorenzo support team on board for this “shakedown” journey we had an effortless journey with calm seas and the SD118 ate up the miles with ease.
Arriving in Bonifacio, which has to be one of Europe’s most spectacular marinas with mountains all around and crystal-clear water, we moored stern to and explored the
town. Bonifacio is a challenging marina in almost any wind but the reward of staying there immersed in Europe’s yachting scene is well worth the journey. Morning strolls for coffee and croissants and watching the variety of yachts come in and out are enough to please almost anyone.
From Corsica, we cruised to the surrounding island of Sardinia where the clear blue waters left all on board in awe. The soaring heatwave made even Asia feel cool in comparison, which made the swims more memorable and the men’s Wimbledon final gave us an excuse to retreat to the upper deck saloon for several hours of tennis action.
The moral of the story: it’s a lot of organising and you need a proficient crew, sufficient planning and ready to roll with the changes but if you’re ready to buy a new yacht, our team is ready and very happy to prepare a great Mediterranean cruise for you, which will give long-lasting memories.

Sailing triumphs and tropical waters
With such a great sea scenery that Hong Kong offers, it is easy to go boating on a regular basis. Since 2021, the Covid lockdown, I enrolled myself in dinghy sailing and keep on logging more hours and experience whenever a free weekend is available, which, sadly, was not that often in 2023 as we are back in action with boat shows and events that usually fall on weekends.
One of the most memorable sailing days was the Around The Island Race, the biggest and most spectacular regattas in Hong Kong, organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. It took place on 29 October, right after one of our major owner’s events – we were exhausted but positively motivated! We gathered a Simpson Marine team of seven and raced on the Beneteau First 36 which proved to be a true racing machine, with us taking second position in our IRC division! Competing against more than 230 boats, our team raced in the IRC Division “ATI 1.050 to 1.1095”, commencing racing at 9:50 am alongside other yachts in their division. Together we achieved an impressive secondplace finish with a time of 4 hours and 26 minutes. It was very rewarding to celebrate that result on a podium together.
On a personal note, I have also spent a lovely boating day with family on 24 December in and around Cebu, the Philippines, on our Christmas break, invited by our yacht owner turned friend, who took us around some beautiful snorkelling and fishing locations amongst little paradise islets and sandbars while testing some great local delicacies and amazing seafood, right off the fishing banka boat. A great prelude to the evening Christmas feast and Christmas Day.

Postcard-worthy sunsets on idyllic beaches
I enjoyed many fun boating moments during the recent year, criss-crossing Hong Kong in my 7.6-metre Highfield RIB. I’ve spent many weekends eagerly exploring new (to me) locations such as the southern beaches of Lantau Island or returning again and again to old favourites like the seafood restaurant at Po Toi Island.
Another particular activity stands out in my memory: camping. Since my boat isn’t ideal for sleeping on board, overnight trips call for finding a suitable beach and setting up a tent. While there is certainly extra effort involved with bringing tents, sleeping bags, BBQ supplies and all sorts of other camping paraphernalia to the beach, I’ve found it’s always worth the effort. Whether on a camping mission with my girlfriend Stacy or rounding up a group
of friends for a larger beach outing, overnight trips have given me many highlight memories.
Imagine being at someplace as beautiful as Millionaire’s Bay in Sai Kung, and then as dusk starts to fall, the various boats in the bay haul up their anchors and start heading for home. Even before sunset’s reds and pinks have fully faded from the night sky, the bay that was busy at 3 pm is now a private paradise at 7 pm. I love this. After a cozy night of sleep in a tent, the bay at sunrise is equally empty and peaceful, and the perfect time to stoke the previous night’s campfire to life and boil water for coffee. By the time the first mug of coffee has been enjoyed, there are still a couple of hours left before the first boats start to arrive, a moment I’m already looking forward to as I write this.

Making friends at sea
After nearly five years immersed in the luxurious yacht industry, with the extensive range of brands we represent, I have had the privilege to meet many boat enthusiasts on the sea. What I enjoy the most is the friendships forged while spending time on the open waters.
The initial connection with a client is often a simple exchange of pleasantries. Yet, over time, trust is developed, and genuine camaraderie takes root. We would reunite on the water and share tales of adventure. From mysterious restaurants on very remote islands to choosing the perfect beach for a campfire.
Recently, my horizons have expanded beyond my workspace and my clients. A sailing course at a Hong Kong boat club introduced me to a
different breed of mariner: dynamic, spirited sailors. Our days aboard sailing boats are both exhilarating and exhausting. We battle fierce breezes, capsizing and laughing in equal measure. Silly paddle races with rudders in hand when there is no wind to sail, become our shared inside joke. There is not a single moment when we are not laughing together. After a long exhausting day, we always sit together and finish the day with an ice-cold beer in hand. These moments are nothing short of exceptional.
The sea, vast and ever-changing, is more than a mere playground for boating — it’s a crucible of friendships and that is one of the very reasons why we all love boating.

Navigating life is an adventure itself
I’ve had the privilege to facilitate many yacht owners start their seafaring journey, and each vessel carries its own story. There’s one experience from last year that particularly stands out, though — the day I handed over a Lagoon 450 catamaran to my client from Sri Lanka.
Together we travelled from Shau Kei Wan to Aberdeen, passing through Victoria Harbour. As we sailed, I shared the harbor’s history, and stories behind iconic buildings. Being a broker, I revel in meeting diverse individuals, learning about their cultures, and sharing my passion for yachting. Many of my clients evolve into cherished friends who I catch up with regularly.
Last year also marked the beginning of a new chapter as I welcomed my baby girl, Lea, into the world. She was born in October 2023, arriving like a gentle breeze and filling our home with laughter and wonder.
Watching her grow is amazing, and I try my best to bring her out of home whenever I am free, so she can meet more people and discover more about the world. I am already planning to take her to sailing class when she’s a little older. Perhaps one day, she’ll stand at a helm, eyes alight with the same wonder that fills mine when I’m out on the water. It’s a voyage of love, laughter, and endless horizons, a journey I wouldn’t trade for all the treasures of the sea. I can’t wait to see a little sailor in my family!

The exhilaration of racing and the calm joys of picnics
Last year, I reignited my passion for sailing after returning to Hong Kong from China. I joined an experienced team of sailors aboard the TP 52, fully committing to the Typhoon series. The exhilarating races pushed my skills to their limits, and as a grinder onboard, I felt the intensity of a cardio workout. But the thrill of sailing made every moment worthwhile!
After each race, our close-knit group of around 15 people gathered on deck. We would unveil the food, prepared the night before and enjoy a delightful picnic, complete with icy cold beer. These moments of camaraderie and shared joy made the experience truly special. I also explored sailing on the MAGIC 25 — a fun and sporty adventure where I could feel the boat respond to my every movement. Being on the edge of the boat with the harness on gave me a sense of freedom and exhilaration as if I were flying!
As the sun dipped below the horizon during one of our sailing adventures, I reflected on the incredible journey — every part of it had woven a tapestry of memories that would forever shape my life. In those moments of exploration, I found not just adventure, but also a deeper understanding of myself.
When I’m not on the water, I cherish spending time with my energetic 25kg Chow Chow puppy, Simba. We hike, mountain bike, and occasionally visit my parents’ house to farm together. Traveling, hiking, and camping are also passions of mine. Discovering new places, getting inspired by visiting museums and art exhibitions, immersing myself in different cultures, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds bring me immense joy. These moments of exploration and discovery are just as precious to me as my time on the water.

Sailing to Dalaka Island: A tranquil autumn voyage I spend most of my daily time at the dock or at sea. Beyond my work, I enjoy sailing with my family and friends, and each voyage offers unique experiences, shaped by weather and destinations.
Last fall, a group of good friends and I set sail for Dalajiao Island. Autumn is the best season for sailing in Guangdong. It’s the perfect temperate. Departing from Huizhou, we charted a course through a string of islands. The rhythmic play of waves and sails erased the noise of city life, leaving only the embrace of nature.
We bought fresh seasonal seafood from the fishermen and sailed the boat to the bay of Dalajiao Island in the evening. The setting sun painted the water in golden hues while we enjoyed the dinner prepared by a friend. There is nothing more joyful than drinking and talking with good friends under the stars.
When morning arrived, I rose with the sun and swam in the clear water. A cup of coffee completed the ritual. By noon, we weighed anchor, bound for our next destination.
This trip was unforgettable. I especially liked the bay under the moonlight that night. Nature can restore our spirit and kindle inspiration. As I pen this, I’m already thinking about my next adventure. Happy sailing to you too!

Discovering hidden gems in Hainan
In recent years, Hainan Island has witnessed the gradual evolution of its yacht industry. From the promulgation of yacht tax-free and car tax-free policies to the construction of yacht terminals and the improvement of supporting facilities around the terminals, this development has provided sailing enthusiasts with more convenience to enjoy the freedom of yachting.
Sailing — the very word evokes a longing for liberation. Out on the open sea, there are millions of surprises and breathtaking beauty waiting to be explored. Since joining the yachting industry in 2012, I have become more and more passionate about water sports. I’ve raced alongside friends in domestic regattas, and on weekends I like to set sail and visit islands and revel in parties at the sea. Sanya, with its tropical island climate, is one of my favourite cities. Here, you can relax in the fresh air and sunshine. It’s a sanctuary where the demands of work fade away.
Xisha Islands in particular, has become very popular with tourists. Nestled within approximately 30,000 square kilometres of azure waters, these islands surpass even the famed Great Barrier Reef in purity. China National Geographic even bestowed upon them the title of the country’s most beautiful island. Those who’ve explored the Xisha Islands speak with reverence: “After returning, you’ll forget about the Maldives”. I encourage all explorers to visit Hainan, where uninhabited islands await your footprints, and where nature’s primal beauty remains unspoiled.

A Priceless odyssey: Delivering superyachts in Asia
In the tapestry of my experiences as a yacht broker, being part of the delivery crew is not common, but this past year, several sea escapades stood out.
Following the Singapore Yachting Festival in April, a notable journey unfolded as I facilitated the sale of the Sanlorenzo SX76, which was on display at the festival. With the new owner opting to dock the vessel at Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket, an opportunity arose. The owner’s captain, short on crew, and being a current 200GT Master, I volunteered for the task of navigating the Sanlorenzo SX76 up the Malacca Straits to Phuket.
Commencing from Singapore, the yacht’s limited inventory needed to be equipped with the essentials: water, provisions, and fuel. We left Singapore on a Saturday at five in the morning and steamed towards our first stop at Admiral Marina, Port Dickson. Navigating through the Singapore Straits, with a multitude of ships at anchor, the journey unveiled the SX76’s prowess.
As a broker who often showcases yachts, spending extended time at sea on long passages is rare but invaluable. The Sanlorenzo SX76, with its innovative closed flybridge, offered a sense of grandeur beyond its class. The Volvo engines and IPS drive system operated with whisper-quiet precision, even on the main deck, creating an ambiance of serene speed.
Months later, another opportunity allowed me to embark on another 670 nautical mile delivery from Davao, Philippines to Sorong, West Papua in Indonesia. Passing many Indonesian islands, including the awe-inspiring Raja Ampat, we were greeted warmly by locals during shore visits, offering glimpses into their way of life.
As these memories echo in my thoughts, I eagerly anticipate sharing these tales at events and shows, inviting others to savor the enchanting experience of yachting in the heart of Asia.

Exploring the beauty of the Andaman Sea
In the heart of Southeast Asia, amidst the stunning scenery of the Andaman Sea, lies the captivating island of Phuket. It was here, against the backdrop of azure waters and emerald-green cliffs, that I embarked on a new adventure, joining the team at Simpson Marine as a broker.
My first year in Phuket was defined by unforgettable experiences on the water. From the moment I arrived, I was entranced by the natural beauty and vibrant culture of the region. Being at Simpson Marine also afforded me the opportunity to share this beauty with clients, colleagues, friends, and family in an array of indelible moments.
One of the highlights was an overnight sail around the picturesque islands around Krabi with some colleagues and friends I have made since my move to Phuket. Setting sail from Phuket, we cruised along rugged coastlines, passing towering limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons. On our first night, we anchored off Railay Beach, a paradise of white sand and turquoise waters framed by dramatic cliffs. We spent the day exploring the surrounding caves and limestone formations, marveling at the sheer beauty of our surroundings.
I have also ventured to the tranquil islands of Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, where time seemed to stand still amidst the idyllic scenery. Anchoring in secluded bays, you are always greeted by the warm hospitality of the locals. The beauty of the yachting lifestyle is being able to get to different islands around the region and bring able to explore these places by motorbike or foot, encountering lush mangrove forests, traditional fishing villages, and pristine beaches untouched by the masses.
As I reflect on my first year, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to live and work in such a stunning corner of the world, I was continually amazed by the beauty and diversity of the islands that dotted the Andaman Sea. Working at Simpson Marine has allowed me to combine my passion for the ocean with my love for adventure, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I look ahead to the years to come, I know that my journey in Phuket has only just begun.

Escapism through sailing, swimming and cinema
For me, 2023 was a year of maritime exploration. I went sailing with many friends and boat owners and together, we explored the seas we had long dreamt of. Crossing oceans, selecting safe anchorages or cozy harbours, sharing moments of tranquility and laughter with friends, and seeing the happy smiles on everyone’s faces awakened by the majestic sea during the journey have reaffirmed my passion for this career.
Aside from work, I love swimming and watching movies. Swimming for me is freedom and relaxation, providing me with physical and mental tranquility. It’s a way to stay healthy, soothe my mind, wash away worries and connect with nature. Movies provide another escape. They’re my passport to realms beyond the harbour and often the topic of interesting conversations with friends and family. I enjoy various genres, from suspense to comedy, from sci-fi to documentaries. Each movie immerses me in different storylines and emotions.
