“Minisport” Mini Cup 2016

Congratulations to OMC members Clive King & Anton Bird on winning the “HRCR Minisport Mini Cup Championship 2016” also taking the HRCR Old Stager and HRCR Masters & Welsh Historic C2 class wins, a very successful season in the “Minisport.” sponsored Cooper S. The 2016 HRCR Minisport MINI Cup. Season Report.... AB With the competition in the Mini`s always being fierce this season has been tough, a few new faces in the championship turned out to be quicker than we thought, so every event turned out to be absolutely full on from the off. A good start on Round One, the AGBO, with no dramas and a dry day we take the first win, expected due to the crews knowledge of the venue, also a win by a big margin on Round Two on a very wet Epynt, good knowledge of the ranges good notes and a driver that goes well in the wet proved the Minisport sponsored Cooper S to be uncatchable on the day. Round Three better be careful what I say about the event at Down Ampney and the club that run it, not a good event in many ways, too many splits putting too many cars into the loops at once causing massive problems, not a single arrow on any junction anywhere and organisers who could not even tell you what the lateness allowance for the event was, least said, finished second Mini by 2 seconds due to being baulked on the last stage by a Subaru !!!!!!!! No less. Round Four Summer Stages at Caerwent, again wet, going well in stage three a drive shaft breaks, would not have been so disastrous had the stage not been ten miles long, the time lost left us at fifth Mini at the end of the day. Round Five Carfax Stages Throckmorton, a very fast venue, a couple of the Mini`s with really strong engines gave us a run for our money all day, but with a controlled drive we pull out a couple of seconds on every stage and take the win by a small margin. Round Six & Seven Manx, the event is split into two sets of scores for HRCR contenders SS1 to 9 being the first event and SS10 to SS20 being the second set. A disastrous event for us or so we thought, Gearbox decided not to play on the first night thus retirement for us in SS2. A frantic engine out gearbox rebuild ensued on Friday, we thank Adrian Kermode for garage facilities and a spare “S” box for parts, the cars back in the service park at 4pm ready to go for the night stages in Leg 3. Blow the opposition away in the dark but another disaster at the end of the last stage of the night a 14 miler, we go off three corners from the stage finish, a map light issue all night, being the culprit, 100% concentration required on this event. ......... Cont.

An off into a big dirt bank ruined what had been a superb run through the night, damage to the dizzie and oil cooler stopped further progress all 300m of it to the stage finish for the night. Car is trailored back to service, another very late night. Whilst on the way to collect us that night Craig reported the sighting of a Kangaroo crossing the road, !!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes we did interrogate him as to what he had drunk or was taking, but he assured us it was a Kangaroo. Very Late that night we get a lap top out and check & guess what, there is a colony of Wallabies a smaller versions of the Roo family living on the Island. Apparently escapees from the Curroughs wild life park a number of years ago. Up early Saturday and straighten the car out after the previous nights excursion, after a bit of bashing and borrowing we are back in for Leg 4 all day Saturday. Another good fast run all day, but our super rally penalties brought us home 11th in class and last O/All. Rubbish you would say, BUT the old saying in rallying is “Never Give up” we didn't and the rewards were unexpected. By us completing the event all be it through super rally it gained us enough points to take The HRCR “Minisport” Mini Cup Championship also the championship C2 class win and become the highest points scorers in the HRCR Old Stager Championship, the later being totally unexpected and only achieved by perseverance on the Manx. So through all those problems throughout the Manx weekend we came good. We thank the following for our successful season, Chris & Dan Harper the proprietors of Minisport for their seasons sponsorship, Rob Eastwood also from Minisport for his invaluable help at all the events this year, Craig King & Paul Fowkes for being a very able service crew, Adrian Kermode for the generous offer of parts and facilities in times of need and I personally would like to thank my driver for an exciting and at times nail biting season, it pleases me that we take the Mini Cup title united this year unlike last year. ..AB OMC donate £1700 to Midlands Air Ambulance in October, over £11K donated in nine years well done all involved. A proportion of this comes from AGBO Rally spectators we thank you all. A few of members made the trip over to RAF Cosford in early October to present The Midlands Air Ambulance trust with a cheque for £1700. The club have been very active for this charity over a number of years raising over £11K at our various events and functions. During our visit we were treated to a rare sight, not one but two of the fleet, the visitor being the Welshpool based chopper coming in for a refuel before returning to its home base after completing a local job. The Cosford based chopper is only a few weeks old and has the latest of everything, we were treated to up close and detailed explanation of its operational duties and equipment by Oliver Ayles on board paramedic & navigator. Greatest respect for these people, remember DONATE, it could be you. They are not Government backed and wish to remain that way, this gives them the operational flexibility they require.

Owen Motor ing Club AGBO Rally History [Road & Stage] Update: New information being found constantly, AGBO was part of Motoring News Championship on ten occasions, originally thought to be only seven. Info still required for some years, 1969, 1976, 1971 and in particular 1983 which was a M/News year and we do not have a single piece of evidence in archive about this year. Anyone with anything ? Please let us know. Pictures of old AGBO rallies are scarce, so if you have any and would like them in the publication please shout up. A little info is slowly coming through re the E.C Payter Rally run by OMC, now confirmed it was run in 1973, please come forward with more info if you have any. AGBO Stages @ Wilbarston 1988, 89 & 90 any event documents are required.

Out & About, Any one into this, rare to include F1 in club stuff, I don't think we have a huge following. This was F1 test day at Silverstone just after the British GP, I think their most interesting asset is the cornering ability, seeing the ground force effect at work is impressive. Drivers just have to trust it & they do judging by the cornering commitment I witnessed, and of course the brutal speed at which it happens. Still not a fan I'm afraid.!! Bring back Jackie, Jim & Graham.

The one thing I don't understand about F1 is why do you witness mass over the top driver adulation, this was very evident at the test day, why don't we see the same out pouring of emotions towards WRC Rally drivers, who are far more skilful in my opinion, biased obviously, (see if that draws a comment !!!) Nice to see Hyundai have actually used their WRC rally cars in the new road car advertising campaign, more exposure please, give the WRC drivers the credit they deserve. Has WRC lost its way, its certainly lost exposure, only nine actual WRC cars from only three manufacturers (two really as M sport is a private company) contesting at Rally Germany, this number should improve for 2017 with Toyota coming in, Citreon coming back & Subaru threatening, but will VW pull out through the emissions scandal & subsequent costs to the company? (they have). New rules with more powerful and spectacular cars for 2107, looks like GrpB could be back, in looks only, should make for some spectacular pictures, hopefully. Photos .. Ed

OMC member Brian Austin solves the BRM mystery

The Tech Craft BRM from the June issue, club member Brian Austin finds its history. Firstly It is not a BRM, it is 4WD and was built as a speed hill climb car with BRM parts by Roy Lane of Tech Craft in Warwick. The parts came from a 4WD BRM 670P originally purchased from the Owen Organisation in 1966 by David Good who had some fine results with it but found its engineering complex, he sold it on in late 1967 to Peter Lawson.. In 1969 the car was sold on again after having had the engine up rated in 1968 at BRM in Bourne to the latest Tasman Spec.2070cc giving 260bhp @ 9000rpm, Lawson winning 11 of the 13 rounds of the hill climb championship and taking the title easily. Lawson decided to go circuit racing in 1969 and sold the BRM to John Cousins, at Prescott in 1969 Cousins had a big accident with this car being very lucky not to be seriously hurt, the car was destroyed. This is where Roy Lane the proprietor of Tech Craft stepped in and bought the remains of the BRM. These parts were incorporated into the car he built (as you see in the above picture), complete with the 4wd system and the BRM engine plus other useable parts. Some success was achieved by Roy but nothing spectacular and after two years trying to resolve problems he then sold the car on to John McCartney who eventually resolved the transmission problems by reducing the engine size to 1600cc, at last the Tech Craft BRM became competitive. So the Tech Craft car was a bitser BRM, bits of this bits of that. Club Truckers Beware. Within the club we have a few members associated with the haulage business, Wayne Langridge, Derrick Wallbank & Stuart Woodier all being HGV drivers & Chris Hetherington is the owner of a training centre for prospective new recruits to the industry. BEWARE, Pauline Langford has just experienced the art of truck control at the CRH training centre - she just might be looking for employment soon !!!!!!!! Left, Pauline at speed!! [Truck PCA or should it be PTA] Right, Pauline Langford beaming after HGV driving instruction from teacher Chris, he looks a bit pale don't you think!!!

Classic Scene. “CARS In The PARK” Why is it that things that are put together in a rush seem to work out so well. “Cars in the Park, Lichfield in early July was not originally on our classic show calendar. Our usual organisers Martin & Roger were committed to other shows. So the late invitation prompted Bob Cotterell & Anton Bird to quickly gather what club classic machinery was available and be there. We managed to get a superb cross section of cars for the stand. Notably, Paul Moran, Mini Pick Up, probably the best one in the UK, Anthony Dowdall with his Porsche Spyder Rep, what a beauty. Dean Baker, freshly built Mk2 Escort Stage rally car, meticulous build quality, plus a good number of the quality classics held in the hands of OMC members. The stand was packed with people for most of the day. A big thank you to all club members who turned out at very short notice.

Classic Scene. “Shugborough Hall Show” The question on every ones lips at this show in early August was will it ever happen again. With the National Trust now having taken full control of Shugborough just recently they have vetoed no more shows, WHY, are they mad? This show is probably the best attended show by public and classic owners every year, so why do they wish to destroy it?. It must bring in revenue in many ways for the estate so why bin it? Answers on a postage stamp to the editor, I can’t think of one good reason. A petition to keep the show going was doing the rounds on the day, but the NT are not the easiest people or organisation to deal with as I found out on a number of occasions whilst trying to organise venues in years gone by for our classic car run to visit. Super turn out of classics from OMC, TR3, Mk1,2 & 3 Escorts we have never done that before and did they look good. Two Cortina`s, two Moggie Minors, a Dolomite Sprint and an MGB drop top, thanks to all owners for attending. A special mention for Nick Pollitt and his immaculate TR3 (with history, tell us more Nick) his car taking best club classic in show and deservedly so. Paul Moran took a major show award with his ex Rubery Owen “Downton” Mini Cooper. Thanks go to Roger Tristram of the classic section for organising this show, well done Roger.

Shugborough is one of the best shows of the year, now under threat from the National Trust, the cars in the show are in the National Trust anyway, our British Classic owners Trust, being preserved for the Nation, enough said.

Rally Report WRC Germany. [report & pictures ... Editor] Simple, one word sums up the entire 5 day trip, FANTASTIC, that does exclude Stanstead Airport.!! WRC organisers take note if you want to know how to run a round of the WRC ask the Germans, every department is covered, start & finish ceremonies, parking, stage directions, service area, marshalling, varied terrain for stages, Panzerplattz etc, etc. They have it all covered magnificent organisation and all set in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. Shakedown on Thursday was a bit of a let down due to a long delay related to a spectator who was taken seriously ill and subsequently we heard later passed away. Resuming around 11.30am, Nueville not crashing out this year, we picked his corner purposely but no visits to the vines by anyone this year. Fridays two Stages run twice were located in the vineyards high up in Mosel Valley one of the most spectacular locations in Europe, fast and furious, morning and afternoon spectating for us, the afternoon tight down hill hairpin chosen being special. Saturday we visit the famous military area Panzerplatz, if you think Epynt is big try this, it is simply enormous, three stages here in the morning loop, a short stage run twice in succession around the central area and then straight into the big one 43k across the entire complex. Thousands come to spectate at this venue, my third visit and all have been the same, busy, but it is so big and so well organised it is never difficult to get close to the action. The short stage through the central complex was designed to give max impact for the spectators and it delivered. With a million and one corners all coming together in the central arena complex it was not difficult to find locations to get some action pictures. WRC ran back to back through these two and with junctions all around the spectacle and noise was incredible and that's with only nine full WRC cars running, others were impressive but just don't have that edge on raw speed. Due to the serious Leverbe off mid long stage there was a lengthy delay, so we decide to move on to another stage further south earlier than planned. A manic lunch in Freisen, as many others took the same decision as us, followed by action in SS11, an hours rain made the narrow tarmac country roads super slippy, we spectate at a narrow down hill 2 left through a bridge, all cars taking a massive cut exiting the bridge across a grassed area most with 4 wheels off. Sunday morning is a difficult choice, only two stages to choose from, both run twice, time and distance excluding viewing of both. We choose SS 16 on the Luxemburg side of the Mosel river south west of Trier, a stage running through undulating farm land and wooded valleys, totally different in character to the Mosel or Panzerplatz and that’s the beauty of this event three sets of stages all very diverse in character. We drop on an amazing location to spectate, three great corners, all in view, a jump and with a 100m walk a hairpin right, catering and facilities all in place as usual. Super sunshine and some amazing action, we also witness at this location the incredible skills of the helicopter pilot filming the action, truly an amazing sight, I’m surprised that the rotor down draught does not affect the cars as they fly so low, this also made for one or two interesting pictures.

A leisurely drive back to town after the mornings action to take in the ceremonial finish at the Porta Nigra in Trier. This year we have been lucky enough to have VIP guest & car passes, this was organised by Ray Smith one of our party. Ray is our AGBO MSA licensed Clerk of the Course and a club member in all but name, he managed to organise these through Andrew Kellitt at the MSA, thank you Ray and thank you MSA. The passes proved invaluable especially at Panzerplatz, they also admitted us to the VIP area at the ceremonial start / finish at the Porta Nigra, touching distance from the rally crews, tiered seating and waitress service with a glass or two of the local wine all included. WRC Germany an event with three identities all stunning, the Mosel Valley stages, the unique Panzerplatz and the undulating farm land and wooded valley stages to the West, all very different and all total quality. On top of all this, the event is based in Trier the oldest city in Germany which offers accommodation, good food, wine, beer and architecture going back to the Roman era, a must do on the WRC calendar.

OMC Club Marshalling

OMC again have a problem with club marshalling strength, something we (club committee) are trying to rectify. We used to have a very strong marshalling team that we could call upon for our & other clubs events, but over a number of years this has dwindled to next to nothing. This nearly caused a very embarrassing situation for the club at the 2016 Graham Hill Sprint. It appears we now only have a dedicated team of probably six that can be called upon & we can’t thank them enough (they know who they are). We accept that there are a million and one other forms of entertainment for people to be interested in rather than standing trackside or in a field for a day, so how do we rebuild the team and attract some new blood?. We have possibly taken our eye off the ball for this sector, I don't think the tools we have at our disposal have been utilised correctly, if at all. The club web site and its unseen emailing functions are, I think, a really good starting place. Procedures are now in place to email shot a new marshals database (already with over 100 names in it & growing, set up by Dan Lister our new Chief Marshal). Dan is now also a fully licensed MSA Stage Rally Clerk of the Course. This will invite and remind all club members and marshals registered in the database four weeks before and then again 7 days before an OMC event for assistance with marshalling duties (and possibly a few other events where other clubs help us, Quinton, Wallasey, Rally Wales etc.). A new section has been added to the OMC Face Book page to try to attract some new recruits, all of our events will also feature in the OMC F/Book pages, classic section included. Should any existing or potentially new marshals want to register in the new data base please contact Dan Lister danlister@hotmail.co.uk or 07891 374905 . I am extremely pleased to see that the Wales Rally GB marshals team after a number of years absence has reformed and were out this year in Hafren with a decent sized party. Thanks to Paul Langford for bringing this back, for years this was a highlight in our calendar under Mike Ward`s Chief Marshal years. How many of our existing club members have been through the new MSA on line safety training seminars aimed at marshals, I am aware of five (two of these now have MSA Stage Safety Car certification & corresponding licence). Prospective marshals BEWARE if you have not completed the MSA marshal online training tests. You have to have complete this before Dec 31, 2016 or your 2017 marshals licence will not be reissued. Please let Dan Lister know if you complete this task and we will record it in the new OMC marshals database. OMC offer a superb selection of quality events every year, run by enthusiastic experienced organisers, it would be a disaster if these events were to disappear through lack of support from the marshalling sector, this is a possibility. I witnessed three stages cancelled on the Manx Rally this year due to no marshals being available, this is a very alarming fact. If the MSA introduce a licensed marshal attendance only system we could well be sunk, lets hope that does not happen, but lets be prepared for it if it does. ...Ed

THE BRIGHT SPARKS PCA - SUNDAY 16 OCTOBER 2016 – CURBOROUGH

A full house of 40 entries was highly rewarding for this quality event. This PCA has a really good reputation of providing fast, exciting and flowing tests. There were plenty of smiling faces all day long - that’s all we want to see. The quality line up included, “Maestro” Kevin Hardwick, who had won FTD for the previous 4 years. Also Tom Bishop (Micra), James Nicholls (Peugeot 205), David Evans (Mini), Carl Harper (Nova) and Mark Brotherhood (BMW). Good to see Mike Sones and Simon Whittick in MX5 Mazdas. A tasty battle ensued. Derrick Wallbank, who normally competes at sprinting, came along in his Clio 197 shared with new member Pete Hubball. An interesting car, a VW Beetle, was entered by new members Cecil and Gavin Dickson. Alas they retired at lunch with various problems. Let’s hope we see them again soon. Also Chris Hetherington. Chris recently joined Owen and is trying to make up lost time by competing in many events including, tarmac/forest rallies, circuit racing, and now the Bright Sparks – his first autotest - in a powerful Impreza. The weather started badly with rain threatening to spoil things. Thank goodness it cleared up within an hour or so to hold out for the rest of the day with some pleasant sunshine – as forecasted by Anton! Starting at 10.15am, as usual there were 2 large tests each taking approximately 80 seconds to complete.

Each test consisted of 3 runs with the worst score being dropped. A second car was started when the first was about ¾ way distance to reduce queuing time. Again this time I added a split to take cars twice around the roundabout near to the sprint start on the bottom test, and a “donut” on the top test. Lots of directional arrows made the tests look like rally stages. Great car control by Mark Brotherhood in his BMW. The Escort Cosworth, driven by Bill Rushton, was proving a real handful, but entertaining, with lots of “pops” and “crackles”. At the lunch break Kevin Hardwick was leading on 320, with Tom Bishop on 322, and James Nicholls and David Evans, both on 324.

The afternoon session started at 1.30pm with a few minor course alterations, particularly in the paddock, that caught out several competitors including, surprisingly, Mike Sones. He admitted that he should have walked the course. Good to see some Owen members enjoying themselves. Chris Hetherington was starting to get the hang of things on the bottom test and the juniors, Isobel Mansell and Owain Thomas, were excelling themselves. A great drive again by Isobel in Barri’s Fiat. Simon Whittick managed to pip Mike Sones by 11 seconds. The main event finished by 4.30pm, but we decided to have a final fun “dash” with monies going to Air Ambulance. The whole proceedings ran very smoothly controlled by very efficient marshals. Special thanks goes to Dan Lister, Clare Bird, Barri Wilmot, Paul Langford, Mick Lister, Anton Bird, Melvyn Cox, along with two new marshals. Many thanks to Barri for helping me on the Saturday and Kevin Robinson who acted as Chief Scrutineer. A big thank you to Clare Bird for looking after the secretarial duties and Dave Allitt with the speedy results. We must see more of you Dave! The final result was so close. Just one second separated Tom Bishop from Kevin Hardwick and, as a result, his four year reign was finally over. He will be back no doubt!! Continued.......

Bright Sparks Final Top ten positions Tom Bishop (Micra) – 622 (FTD) Kevin Hardwick (Peugeot 205) – 623 (1st Class B) James Nicholls (Peugeot 205) – 632 (1st Class A) David Evans (Mini) - 636 Carl Harper (Nova) – 640 Adam Evans (Peugeot 106) – 642 Mark Brotherhood (BMW 318) – 645 (1st Class D) Phil Lawson (Peugeot 205) – 655 Stuart Holland (MGZR)– 666 Rob Bancroft (Mini) – 669

OMC Classic Run 2016

The Tony Matthews Classic Tour 2016.... By David Yorke This tour for classic cars, organised by Owen Motoring Club, (25.9.16) was a little different from the norm, being about half of the usual 100 miles or so distance but none the worse for that in that it finished at the newly refurbished and extended British Motor Museum at Gaydon. The start was at the Jinney Ring Crafts Centre near Hanbury, Bromsgrove which had an interesting set of what were probably former farm buildings and a cafe restaurant that provided excellent coffee and bacon or sausage baps. Signing on and documentation had some nice touches that could merit consideration for the Derbyshire Dales Drive. Cars left in numerical order from 09.45 and the 38 cars (some recognised from previous Derbyshire Dales Drive) then covered the 50 or so miles to Gaydon via a mid way comfort break at Hilliers Garden Centre. The first arrival at Gaydon was expected at around 12.30hrs and the tours fee provided wristbands for the entrants, Owen MC played a blinder by securing an external display and tour finishing area located right by the new entrance to the main (original) exhibition building. Immediately opposite was arguably the largest gathering of Jensen’s (99) perhaps seen for some time, whilst other Marques on display were Rover P5’s, Pipers and Caterhams/Lotuses & Robin Hoods. The new configuration of the original building seemed better and less cluttered, whilst the new facility housed a comprehensive and labelled collection of Jaguars on the ground floor. The museum’s reserve collection and restored space occupied the first floor, the latter seemingly limited to a single car at a time. Here, labelling and explanations were at a premium, hopefully something to be addressed in the near future. But having said that, it is far better to have the full collection made accessible rather than the reserves being out of site, as was the case previously. All in all, it seemed to be a well received event and I was pleased to be available at short notice to help HRCR member organisers Roger Tristram, Anton Bird and Martin Parkes with photographic services by David Yorke from HRCR.

TR3, Nick & Dawn Pollitt Lack of space in this mag leaves no room for any more classic run pictures, a collage will feature in the next issue of REVS..... Ed..

Above, MG TF belonging to Pete Smith. Left, Even a Motor Bike took part, new trend perhaps.?
