Brean Stages 2107, Above. Barri Wilmot / Clare Bird. A testing week end literally, new wet spec rubber all round worked amazingly according to the driver in the torrential conditions, but not so the new Dog Box fitted over the winter. The car ran well through the Saturday stages then gear linkage problems sidelined the car at SS8 on Sunday morning whilst well placed in class. Something to do with Pigeon S*** welding by the suppliers in the linkage I believe !!. (Not the new Box). OMC Member Derrick Wallbank, entered the REDLINE SYNTHETIC OILS CURBOROUGH CHAMPIONSHIP 2016, all rounds were held at Curborough. My trusty stead was a RENAULT CLIO CUP 2.0ltr in standard production CLASS SB. (my daily car see left) 7 sprints entered out of a possible 8 of which the best 6 results out of 8 count. Best results were two 3rds and one 4th. A couple of PBs, and no dramas, so MUST TRY HARDER.

Derrick`s trusty Clio Cup @ Curborough which he used to win the Owen MC Sprint Championship for 2016.

Not entering the championship this year so I can attend more classic shows. With the Escort Harrier. ......................... DW

Brean Stages, by James Nicholls...... The Brean Stages Rally ran at Unity Caravan Park near Burnham-on-sea over the last weekend of January. For the second year running I was joined by old school friend Luke Harlow of Cannock Car Club who kindly offered to sit in for the event. Friday Scrutineering passed by without drama at the local college in Weston-super-mare and all was set for a good weekend’s motorsport. The event started in earnest on Saturday morning involving stages which snaked their way through the grid system of the caravan park with six different permutations used over the twelve stages of the rally. The roads were slippery through lack of use and artificially tightened in places with barrels of concrete and tyre bales, I can tell you from experience those things don’t move! As two wheel drive machinery goes the nimble 205 was the car to have in these conditions and after the six stages of day one were complete we were a respectable fourteenth overall, only one second behind the awesome Peugeot of Andy Corner. Ahead of him was a selection of highly powered four-wheel drive machinery. Needless to say I was pleased with the overnight standings and so we, along with several other midland crews moved to the bar to enjoy the good food and entertainment on offer. Heavy rain overnight had both an irritating percussive effect on the roof of our trusty caravan and also washed much of the mud off the road which had helped our relatively underpowered Peugeot so much on the Saturday stages. The rain was relentless and so the slicks were cut to Intermediate pattern, but still weren’t really adequate to clear the standing water. We were however climbing the leader board trying hard to find the right balance between caution and attack in the testing conditions. Drama is always potentially around the next corner in rallying but we were not perturbed by rogue tyres in the middle of the stage, Subarus who just wouldn’t move out of the way or even by a sticking throttle linkage on stage nine. The service crew did a fine job of adding extra return springs to the throttle, and bleeding the boiling brakes. With three stages to go all we had to do was make it to the end. We couldn’t hold off a heroic charge by Dai Roberts in his 205 who came from six seconds behind us at the end of day one to finish ahead at the end of the event, however we managed to climb the leader board to finish eighth overall and second in the 2 -litre class. Without doubt our best result to date. I have two more events planned for the near future, David Allman makes a return to the codrivers seat for the Tour of Epynt, and Luke will be back again the following week for the Agbo Stages. (Sorry no decent pictures available from Brean) Car 29, ... 8th O/A, 2nd Class James Nicholls Prospective trip 3 days possibly, would any one be interested in a trip in late summer to Stuttgart, in deepest Germany?. The idea in mind would be to visit the New Mercedes Benz Museum plus a possible factory visit and visit the New Porsche Museum, both are based in the city. A great place for a few days away, superb city transport system, good food and some lovely Weis beers to be tasted. I have made this trip on two occasions and can thoroughly recommend it... Flying from Birmingham direct to Stuttgart approx 90 mins, direct rail link into the city. Any interested parties let me know.........Ed...

A day or two away maybe ?.......

Editors page...... As mentioned on the front page, Cath Walker has donated a wealth of information to the club archive, many of our old “INFO” and “REVS” club publications, some going back to 1966 plus considerable AGBO information. Peter Walker religiously filed monthly copies of REVS / INFO away for years, bless him. Over a couple of months I have trawled through many from the earliest donated, some hilarious stuff has been published over the years e.g. a certain member who became famous for his worn for ever wellies, eventually appearing one night at the club to every ones amazement without them. When questioned he replied sorry chaps they had a massive blow out !!!! Many authors contributed to the old mags, (now very few) but the strange thing was they would write under an alias but all in good fun (unlike an episode in the 80`s when we had an alias contributing at times with some very caustic and cutting remarks !!) Here are a few of the old aliases, can any one put names to them, Cotter the slotter (I know who that is, he got that through missing a slot or several whilst navigating for Rick York) Spotlight, Old Sump Oil, Spanners, Con Rod, Navy, Tappet, Eva brick and some strange worldly reports appeared from the alias “Mere Females”. I just wish we had that many contributors today. Another gem from a copy of club mag “INFO” dated June 1980, written by Bob Cotterell, word for word ”For a long time now I have complained about too few doing too much. Repeatedly I have asked for people to come forward to help organise our competitive events, the response has been virtually nil”. He continues and this is the important bit “I don't intend to preach but the survival of any club depends on its members who must make the effort to contribute to the clubs activities.”

This situation still exists today, many takers but not enough doers, IN REALITY IT IS WORSE, as the organisers then [36 years ago] are in most cases still doing it today, BUT they are 36 years older and obviously can’t and don't want to go on forever. I appeal to the younger membership of OMC, if you want OMC events to continue which you all seem to enjoy very much as competitors, the ball is firmly in your court. Step up and help, learn the ropes from our very experienced organisers, that's in every department (not just auto tests/solo`s/PCA which many of you seem to be interested in) you will be welcomed with open arms and perhaps our club will have a future and you will have future OMC events to go to.. Congratulations to David Allman & Tim Beard for doing exactly that, they have jointly taken over the Ernest Owen Trial. One way or another this has got to happen or OMC will just become an internet or classic car club. It has been very encouraging to see a former OMC member step up to the organising role be that for another local club. William Barnes I congratulate you for making a great success of it. Some one please follow suit for OMC, unlike other clubs we do cover the complete spectrum of club motorsport so there are many diverse opportunities, come on, help us, we do not want to be just a classic car club. On the old club magazine front there will be more interesting bits to come from the valuable publications we have been given for archive, like the amazing art work produced of club cars by former member Geoff Storer will be featured in a future issue of REVS, shout up anyone who remembers him. An Escort with a Rover BRM F1 engine !!!!... Yes true, some nutter did it, does any one know who? Now that would make a good tale. A full entry plus a few for “Slithering Santa” our Boxing Day [or as near as] PCA, this particular discipline of our sport seeming very popular at the moment. Congrats to Simon & Lynn Whittick for running a super smooth running event and for arranging the good weather. Event pictures and results in this issue..............

AGBO & other OMC Road Rally History Update:

Two other OMC Rallies have come to light, an event called “The Robin Hood Rally” and “The Rostyle Rally” (Rostyle was a trade name used by Rubery Owen for a range of steel wheels it made as OE equipment for a number of motor manufacturers), I am sure most of our readers remember these, the name was derived from Rubery Owen Style). The rally apparently was a full 200 mile job, information suggests this only ran once 1971? There is nothing in archive about either of these events. Planning was on the table for the “Rostyle” in 72, a mention in REVS of the day refers to maps 117/8 & 128/9, it is unknown if this took place. Plans were afoot (again from old copies of REVS) to turn this event into a multi venue stage rally scheduled for Sept.1973, North Worcs & South Staffs were to be the areas utilised, no venues are mentioned (I am sure this became the OMC E.C. Payter Rally which did run in Sept.1973). On May 19/20 of 1973 the “Goggin Rally” another OMC road rally, which finished at Hilton Park Services on the M6 near Cannock, we have no further details. Definitely a very busy club. It is going to take a while to decipher this huge collection of old club documents, no doubt some other interesting things are going to turn up (they have already, a lot of old OMC rally documents turned up in the second batch from Cath`s loft) and have been very useful for the AGBO book in preparation.. Pictures of AGBO road rallies are scarce, especially the later years 1978-84 so if you have any (can I borrow them to scan) they could go into the prospective publication. Who remembers Speedsports Photography run by Frank Williams, (not the F1 boss). All you old road rallyers out there must have Speedsports photos, the question being does the collection still exist ? (WWW. Is a bit vague regarding identity of the old company, and I have got no replies from any emails). I did hear a while ago that Frank had passed away and that his photographic archive had suffered a fire in which a lot of his work/negs were destroyed, but not all. I also heard that some one had taken over the custodianship of the remains of the archive, but don't know who that is. Does anyone out there know?. If any of our old road rallyers out there have any AGBO road rally photos please let me know.

2016 “Slitherin”

A Ten Year Allrounders Journey Jamie Yapp (aka The Doctor) has won the BTRDA Allrounders championship, it is ten years since he first competed in the allrounders. Along the way he twice finished second, and less than 1 point behind 14 time winner Duncan Stephens. Jamie largely focussed his attentions elsewhere after these close but ultimately fruitless campaigns against Duncan, but decided to make another concerted challenge to try and win it this year, coinciding with his brother Liam’s company, NuCasa, sponsoring the championship. After a few years of under use, the trusty Nova was wheeled out again for some fierce battles in autosolo’s, sprints, hillclimbs, and an autotest. It was after a chance conversation at the Owen Slithering Santa Autotest back in 2003, that the little red Nova SR was bought from Nick Pollitt, for Jamie’s 21st b’day. While he was in his final year at Uni, I borrowed it to sneak the one car award before it was too late! It’s fair to say that the Nova isn’t quite the same car that we inherited from Nick back in 2003. After years of stubbornly persisting with the same setup, we have gradually come to admit that all good things need tweaking. To avoid us being truly ‘Novataken’ by ever more fancy and sophisticated machinery, the Nova has been treated to a new shell, engine, ATB diff, and suspension over the last couple of years. Infact, the only bits to remain from the Pollitt era are the two front seats and amazingly, the gearbox! During the last ten years, Jamie has completed in and won his class in RallyX, Autotests, Sprints, Hillclimbs, and AutoSolos, where he has had number of FTD’s. The only exception to class wins has been in Car trials in which he has only ever beaten me once! Although it is fair to say I won my first ever award in motorsport on a Trial, way back in 1968!!! In most of the other disciplines, I was only on the pace for the first few events. In fact at his first hillclimb at Loton Park some ten years ago, I was beating Jamie in practice, until I pointed out that he was changing gear in the wrong place around Triangle…I have never got near him since, and in fact he now tells me where to change and brake at each circuit that we go to! This year, as well as using the Nova, Jamie has also used his Clio 172 Cup on Sprints. When the Nova started to misfire, after a burnt out exhaust valve, at the last but one round of the Solo championship, the reigning champ John Fox was able to close up in the points table with the Nova out of action for the remainder of the season. Having calculated that if John won his class in the last solo event at Throckmorton he would overtake Jamie, the decision was made to use Jamie’s newly acquired Golf R for it’s first ever event, and to take on the Scoobie drivers. This resulted in a Class win and 2nd overall, which kept Jamie at the top of the pts table. Rich Yapp - Veteran Competitor, father of Jamie

AGBO Stages 2017 AGBO 2017, another smash hit with the competitors, 155 entries in 55 minutes brought no end of problems, but with careful administration by our event & entries sec. Clare Bird, all fell into shape in just a few days. Many disappointed at not getting an entry, we are I am afraid victims of our own success. The team must now sit down and look at where and in which way we take the event forward. More of this in the next issue of REVS. We would like more of the membership to pitch in with this at the subsequent meetings that will take place in the next few months. Back to this year, Owen members who entered all had a good day, our very own Oliver Davies’ Escort, at car 2 won by 25 seconds from Paul Evans’ Escort, who was using a borrowed car having just sold his own AGBO winning Escort from 2016. James Nicholls, Peugeot 205 Mi16, what a day he had, 6th o/all stunning. Does this beat his Dad Stuart? He took second in class C. Dean Baker & Andy Falconer’ Escort took Best Owen and 8th o/all. Dean is definitely the most improved driver in OMC in the last twelve months, this being his best result to date. Clive King & Anton Bird, Austin Mini Cooper S, took 21st o/all, first in HRCR Minisport Mini Cup, first HRCR Cat 2 & second in “class A” in the event, a decent day then. Other OMC finishers, Chris Hetherington & Kevin Robinson, Peugeot 205 @ 41 o/all, Craig King, Peugeot 106 @ 46 o/all, Glynn & Tim Skipp, Escort @ 54 o/all. The entire event team played a blinder in set up and during the event on Sunday, pre planning is the key and obviously our time in the park (now 21 years) gives us the combined knowledge to get it right. This we must obviously do, as we get a serious number of entries every year coupled with a serious number of phone calls and emails after the event from competitors and alarmingly spectators saying how well run and friendly the event is, this year being no exception. No noticeable incidents this year except for spectators getting involved in social media exploits and posting comments and as usual knowing nothing of the actual situation, shame they only want to criticise, the entire event was superbly controlled by its team and its marshals, perhaps the “know it alls” should come and join the team to show us how to do it !!!! We must congratulate Dan Lister (OMC Member) who attained his MSA rally clerks licence late last year in record time. He took on the MSA Clerk of the course role for this year for the first time and was in total control, credit to his mentor and new club member Ray Smith our previous CofC. Far too many thank you’s all will be thanked in due course, one hit this year was our new catering unit “Joni two wagons” good comments about his services from the OMC workers on the event. We were so lucky with the weather being not as forecast, not a bad day just a few spots in the afternoon. For 2017 we included the infamous Weston Park Ford, this fact got out before the event and some very nervous comments started to arise, but after the event many entrants said that's what its there for, a bit of controversy, It had its problems as usual, but from our point of view it keeps the Mega Escorts away from the Stage Bogey Times, an ever increasing problem for many events now. A problem I think the MSA just might have to look into (Escorts with 340BHP Millington or Smith & Jones engines, sequential gear box`s, sticky tyres, power steering, and serious suspension @ £1000 a corner). Its no wonder that the stage record times at Weston have in the last five years been slashed by some 30 seconds [Fact] There will be a de brief held in the next few weeks and after that probably a series of meetings to discuss the future, all members are welcome to attend this and contribute ideas thoughts etc. Further congrats are due to David Allman, his first time out as Chief Marshal, a super turn out marshalling wise this year, the new www.agborally.uk web page set up by our event safety officer Simon Whittick did the trick, also to Simon James our new Spectator Safety Officer and last but not least to Clare Bird for pulling it all together as Event Sec. and Entries Sec duties, which I know was a nightmare. (Abusive disgusting competitors should have Comp licences taken off them, there were a few) ...................... Ed Now some Pics............

OMC AGBO Stages Rally 2017

The OMC Entrants

OMC @ Weston Park.

A successful year of AutoSolo and PCA’s The year started with doing a round of the Donington Winter series PCA with Lynn passenger for me. The MX5 was in the same state it had been for a couple of years. We managed 4 th out of 9 in class D, cars up 2000cc. Having spotted a weeping shock absorber, I decided it was time to fettle the car. I suspected that the rear sub-frame might be bent as the last time I had the geometry set Blink Motorsport could not get enough negative camber on one side at the rear. I sourced a sub-frame from EBay but had to add bracing to it as it was an earlier sub-frame than the original. Much thinking fabricating, welding and painting produced what I think is a good sub-frame. I also fitted some poly-bushed diff. mounts. This lot was topped off with a set of HSD Dual Tech coil-overs from Driftworks followed by a drive up to Blink for a full alignment set up, this time with their more aggressive setting. The car felt totally different on the drive back. Right & Below, Simon & Lynn , Curborough OMC “Bright Sparks PCA 2016

First event with the new setup was our own Bright Sparks PCA and we got a 1st in class. This was followed by Cannock’s Guy Fawkes Revenge PCA and a 4th in class. The next week end saw us at the first round of the Donington Winter Series AutoSolo. I had got my entry in for all four winter events. These were being run to the 2017 AutoSolo rules which allowed a passenger. We were surprised to get 2nd in class, just 2.1 seconds behind Dave Chesterton, (Loughborough CC), and ahead of others who had done better than us on previous events. We were back at Donington a month later this time getting a first in class ahead of Dave by 1.5 seconds. The tests at Donington, being faster and more open than those at Curborough, seemed to suit the car and/ or me better. The year ended with doing Cannock’s Stuff the Turkey PCA. Despite a wrong test, we spun and had all four wheels off to turn around, we ended up with another first in class. So, we ended the year with enough points to clinch the Club’s autotest championship. The new year saw us back at Donington in January with some different tyres. The Uniroyal Rain Sport 3’s were just on the limit so I got some part worn Michelin Pilot Sport 3’s which had the potential to be good all-around tyres. The Rain Sports are good in the wet but not so good in the dry. I had also fitted some stiffer anti-roll bars. Again, a first in class. Despite a not so good morning set of tests. This time Dave Chesterton was clerk of the course so didn’t score. We were now on equal first in the championship with four others, but as only the best three scores counted out of the four Dave Chesterton was still in contention. We had set out to do the Donington Series for the fun of it and we were now in contention for first in class or even first overall.

So, to the last round in February. I had been calculating the chances of winning. We had to beat Dave to get first in class and come first in class to get first o/a. The first test was a little slow, as usual. Second attempt saw us with fastest time for the class on that attempt. Third attempt saw us with the fastest class time but we hit a cone and took a 5 second penalty. What of Dave C? He had a slow test 1 after hesitating, hit a cone on test 2 and did a wrong test on test 3. We were in contention but, looking at the times, we were down in 5 th place at the end of the morning tests. In the afternoon the tests are run in the reverse direction. We had a spin on the first of the three and 5 seconds slower than the best in class. I got things together on the next with a class fastest and again on the final test. But, was this enough? We stayed behind to see the results. Pat Egger gave us the print outs and a quick glimpse saw me still down in 5th in class then Lynn nudged me and gave me the sheet she was looking at. She had the final sheet. I had been looking at the morning times! I had done enough and clinched first in class by 2.5 seconds. I was equal first with Graham Marshall from Mid-Derbyshire MC in his Suzuki Swift in Class A but, if I had interpreted the tie decider rules correctly, I would be first overall. I couldn’t wait for the official final positions to come out which, when they did, put us in first O/A. As I write this the results don’t become final for a few more days. I’ve got to thank Lynn for being my passenger, pointing out where I had to go and encouraging me on. Simon Whittick. Below left... Donnington Jan. 2017

Other Owen Motoring Club Donington successes in 2016 have been, Isobel Mansell, best junior in class B, Nigel Ryan 1st class E & equal 6th overall. A interesting fact that has come to light from the old copies of the club Mags “INFO & “REVS” A few members have asked how long were we based at BRD Social Club (this was after leaving RO Sports & Social, the clubs original home.) The answer is : OMC went to BRD on 7.10.1981 & finally left on 7.11 2001 (some twenty years) that surprised me. First meet at Aldridge Social Club was one week later 14.11. 2001 so thats 16 years in November—where`s that gone ?
