w w w. o we n m o t o r i n g c l u b. c o. u k News Continues. Graham Hill Sprint gets max entry, but dreadful weather. The Mayor of Walsall attempts to steal Martin Parke`s Imp at Aldridge show !! See picture. HRCR Mini Cup, King / Bird finish 5th Mini @ Mid Summer StagesCaerwent in June, broken drive shaft in SS3 costing over two minutes. Is a 1975 Escort RS 2000 really worth £45K, I witnessed the asking price at the AVO owners day in June.

OMC plan another trip to Cosford [Oct.8 @ 10am] to make a donation of £1700. Thats £10K+ donated from OMC to this very worthy cause in eight years, not bad for our small organisation.

Marshalling problems again at OMC. Finally - why am I getting very little from our membership for this magazine, it will only go so far without your support.

Whilst trawling a few old “INFO” mags recently, remember them, for AGBO stuff, I found the above. New members, Aug 1988 mag. Look at the sixth name down, would you believe that. Our only English WRC world champion. Richard Burns joins OMC - this was obviously for an entry on the AGBO Stages @ Wilbarston which ran on July 4th - Results anyone?

O we n M o t o r i n g C l u b AGBO Rally History [Road & Stage] Update: New information being found constantly, AGBO was part of Motoring News Championship on ten occasions, originally thought to be only seven. Info still required for some years, 1969, 1971, 1976 and in particular 1983 which was a M/News year, we do not have a single piece of evidence in archive about 83. Anyone with anything ? Please let us know. Pictures of old AGBO rallies are scarce, [A few really rare ones turned up via Brian Austin recently] if you have any and would like them in the publication please shout up. A little info is slowly coming through re the E.C Payter Rally run by OMC, reputedly early 70`s please come forward with more if you have any. AGBO Stages @ Wilbarston 1988, 89 & 90 any documents required.

Out & About

Simon & Lynn Whittick with their new motor home and its very nice too @ Catton as HQ for the OMC PCA in May.

Think he had just been to the Post Office, guess who !!

Spotted at Curborough, the latest in sprint transport, fitted with Toyota MR2 engine.

No Archie that's not play doh !!

Angria, yes that's what it was called and it was too, sideways forever very spectacular @ Abingdon Rally in June.

Another Abingdon Hooligan, Barri Wilmot & the Nova, sorted AT LAST. Left. OMC members go to Ypres Rally in June for twelfth consecutive year, will it be the last ? Difficult conditions over the week end decimates entry. Loix wins for 11th time. See Story....

OMC Rally Scene At last we are getting a number of rally cars back into the club, mostly stage cars. The number dwindled to next to nothing for a number of years, but now on the increase and looking very healthy. Brief resume of what we have follows: Ade Baker & Son Dean running a very tidy pair of Mk2 Escorts, both in AB Motor Bodies livery, Ades lovely pale Blue version and Deans recently built Kermit green version both run 2.0L red tops. Dean had a disaster first time out with the new car, on the AGBO, the new engine throwing a rod on SS1 but delight second time out in late May when he beat his Dad for the first time on the Red Dragon at Down Ampney, I spoke to Ade at the end of the event, he was well miffed, but I suspect a little proud of the lad. Dean goes on to beat his dad again on Flying Fortress Stages in June, sorry Ade to rub it in !!! The quality of the build in Deans new car has to be admired it is just a bit special. Barri Wilmot has gone through the mill with the rebuild of is Nova, after Rockingham late last year it was time to get some decent rods and other bits in the motor, considering the increase in power it had gained from the throttle body conversion the required mods were over due. So a bit of a car rebuild took a hold when the engine disappeared. Bit being the stupid word, its never a bit with a rally car its a marathon, ask Paul Kendrick !!! (More of him later) the Nova ended up being stripped out welded & painted. With the fresh shell back just a few jobs to do !!! Re position the fire extinguisher and its plumbing, new rack, fuel tank, a new set of Perspex windows with vents, body graphics, and, and etc etc. Of course when the engine went back in it decides to play up, resulting in two rally entry withdrawals in the process. After a big investigation and a lot of agro all is fine now and it looks super, its first event back was the Abingdon Carnival Stages in June, 30th o/all & 2nd class “A” at last.. Just an oil cooler and a short shift Hokley gear change kit left to fit. I have recently heard some hankering after a dog box for it....never ends with rally cars.. Clive King having another good year in the Cooper S, winning round 1, AGBO & 2 Epynt of the HRCR Mini Cup series, a second place on round three The Red Dragon at Down Ampney, sees him leading the championship. Also registered for the Welsh Historic and HRCR Master series taking recent points in both. Fresh engine in for Caerwent, but lost a good result with a broken drive shaft dropping 2 mins in SS3 and finishing only 5th Mini. Throckmorton and two rounds in one rally on the Manx in September will finish off Mini Cup. The conclusion for 2016 will be back in the forests, the last round of the HRCR Masters is the Wye Dean in November (after Rally Wales National last year, “we will never go back to the woods in this car”, said Clive !! ) When did they tarmac the Dean ???? James Nicholls having no luck on the road rally front, retiring again from the Border 100 in May, driving David Allmans Peugeot (I think James he's killed his old Nova) with David navigating. At the end of the first selective the alternator gave up the ghost. Stage wise, I know he did the Mid Wales Stages in March in his 205, the event was a round of the new British Championship and included some night stuff. I believe he pulled a good result BUT no report, so I cant tell you any more. Mini Epynt early June..see report. He also had a superb result on the Flying Fortress Stages @ 9th O/all see report..... Paul Kendrick, well he's been co driving a Mini in HRCR Mini Cup and neglected to finish off the Mk1 Mex which isn't a Mex any more. Its now been converted to a big winged shell complete with BDA, ZF five speeder & four linked back end. Pauls done all the work because he really is a clever lad. The story re finding that engine & box is a once in a life time situation, a story which I assume most of you have heard before, so I wont go into detail again unless asked. The cars nearly ready to go, careful consideration I think as to what might be its first outing. Think he's trying for a record in Co Driving every Mini in the Mini Cup championship up to 3 now.

The Stage Rally cars at OMC

Oliver Davies, Very quick MK2 Escort, Five times AGBO Stages Winner, but we only see him out once a year, Why ? Engine went bang on last stage of AGBO 2016 whilst joint leader. Chris Hetherington, Peugeot 205, a recent purchase by a new member to OMC, his first event ever was @ MIRA in April, head gasket failure finished that one but he got his first finish at Down Ampney of all places in late May. His first forest event was the Niky Grist Stages in July and he finished the event well done Chris. Craig King, Peugeot 106, only two events this year AGBO which he finished & Mid Summer Caerwent where he retired with a broken drive shaft on SS1, sounds familiar that !!! Should I have omitted anyone please tell me off with an email & a picture.......... Pictures from the top: 20 Ade Baker, 44 Barri Wilmot, 80 Chris Hetherington, 69 Craig King, 15 & 38 James Nicholls, Green Mk2 Dean Baker, 55 Paul Kendrick (car now transformed into big wing BDA), 73 Oliver Davies [five times AGBO winner] , 33 Paul Kendrick pre Escort Sunbeam, Mini Clive King. HAPPY LANDINGS GRASS AUTOTEST CATTON PARK – 15 MAY, 2016 This year there was an entry of 30, which was down on previous years, but notables included Tom Bishop (Micra), James Nicholls (Nova), Will Barnes (Fiat 500), Nick Pollitt (Corsa), Kevin Hardwick (Mini), Carl Harper (Nova) and Josh Taylor (Subaru). Great to see Isobel Mansell, who really loves every minute of it, along with 14 year old Owain Thomas, ably assisted by his father Glyn, from Wolverhampton in a Peugeot 206. Richard Mortimer, who regularly competes in a Saxo, took part, with Villa legend Dennis, his father, sitting alongside him. There was good support from Cannock members with a few from Coalville. The great thing about Production Car Autotests is that almost any vehicle can take part. It is aimed at the clubman on a limited budget. Following Will Barnes’ advice, this time I decided to use the bottom of the lower field as the paddock. This worked very well with a run along the loose track to the top of the upper field. The two field format was retained and the tests were fast and flowing using brows and dips with arrows on stakes pointing to the entries into gates. This was to make it simpler to follow the correct course and reduce the number of wrong tests. It worked well with only a couple of wrong tests recorded. As usual it looked like a “rally stage” on grass. Fortunately the weather was very good throughout the day. This meant that fast times were obtainable as the day progressed. The large courses meant that times were around the two minute mark on the bottom test per test and about 1¾ mins for the top one. The entry was split into two groups at each field. Three attempts were given on each test with, as previous, the worst score being dropped. The lunchtime scores showed Tom Bishop leading on 440 secs followed by Nick Pollitt on 441. Third was Phil Lawson on 450 with Kevin Hardwick and Josh Taylor on 451. The tests were run in reverse in the afternoon. We had a major mishap by Josh Taylor who, on the lower field, over enthusiastically slid sideways into a ditch containing a foot of water. Fortunately both driver and passenger were ok but the car ended up on its side with some frontal damage. With much effort, after a while the car was towed out and was back competing again within a short space of time. As the day progressed the battle for FTD was really hotting up with nothing to choose between Nick and Tom. In the end Tom edged it on the “fastest in earlier tests” ruling. This did cause some controversy at the end, but following this we have simplified the rulings for next time, including the Bright Sparks in October, to cover ties in all positions. Everybody enjoyed the event with smiles all around. Anton took some great shots that appeared on the Owen Face book page. The top five final placings were:Tom Bishop Nick Pollitt Josh Taylor Carl Harper = Will Barnes =

Neil Holland - Best Novice Isobel Mansell - Best Junior May I take this opportunity of thanking Ruth and the wonderful marshals, Paul, Melvyn, Dave Smith, Clare, Barri and David Allman. Without these people there would be no event. As usual, Barri Wilmot helped me set up the day before, and Melvyn for helping me to change the courses during the lunch break. Special thanks to Kevin Robinson (Scrutineer), and of course Lynn and Simon Whittick for looking after the secretarial duties and results, also Anton Bird as Club Steward. It was great to receive many compliments from competitors that makes the hard work and effort well worth it all. Some minor improvements next year. See you all again soon. BOB COTTERELL

James Nicholls & David Allman, recent rally exploits.... Welsh Marches Mini Epynt Stages- 5th June 2016 24th overall / 5th in class After outings earlier in the year on the Cambrian and the two-day Mid Wales Stages we had come to the conclusion that forest rallying was a) very expensive for the mileage and b) hammering the car to pieces so decided to look at doing more tarmac events. Top of the list was a trip to Epynt and the Mini Epynt Stages looked a great place to start- 45 compact stage miles for the bargain price of £215 using loops of short stages around Dixies and the German Village. The 76 car entry was more clubman-orientated, with a refreshing mix of cars and few 4WDs. Unusually for Epynt there was no recce, instead we relied on an excellent set of route notes from Killain Duffy. This meant that the first loop was taken fairly easy while we got used to the unique character of the roads and James adjusted to tarmac on notes for the first time. The cancellation of SS4 and subsequent long delay due to a big off on the finish of SS3 broke up the day a little but the organisers did well to get the event back on schedule. James was gradually getting more confident in the second half of the event, getting used to the flow of the roads and committing over the crests. We managed to climb steadily up the leader board, sometimes hampered by a lack of power on uphill sections and the odd kamikaze sheep. The famous ‘Burma road’ took us both by surprise- the road suddenly narrowing and tightening over a blind crest as it went down into the valley. For a first visit we were happy to come away with a good improvement in seeding and 5th in a competitive class with the car performing well all day.

Flying Fortress Stages- 26th June 2016 9th overall / 5th in class This event had been on my ‘to do’ list for some time having marshalled there several times since it was first run a few years back. The ex-USAF base at Grafton Underwood is part traditional airfield single venue but then changes completely as it dives off under the trees into a maze of narrow concrete roads that never see sunlight and are inevitably coated in mud and slime plus a bit of smooth gravel for even more variety. This is inevitably where the time is made up and I had it down as a prime 205 hunting ground. The event’s reputation has grown and the top-ten was populated by Imprezas followed by the usual gaggle of 16 valve Mk2 Escorts. We found ourselves at car 34 of 65. The first stage produced an impressive amount of carnage. Worn gravel tyres were the order of the day early on but even so the woodland half of the stage was remarkably slippery. Exiting the woods we were caught out by what appeared to be grippy clean concrete but instead had all the traction of an ice ring. We joined several others straight on in a corn field, thankfully only briefly. The 205’s grip and a good tyre choice meant we were on the pace in the woodland section although we did suffer from being held up by slower cars and with dry weather and a swap to slicks half way through the day increased the pace even more. Overheating, brake fade, a dead starter motor and forgetting to put the bonnet pins in kept things interesting throughout the day! The last stage saw James in full flow through the trees, resulting in 3rd quickest in stage and fastest two wheel drive. This put us up to 9th overall, equalling our best result to date. Next up- a second trip to Epynt for the Harry Flatters at the end of July. Report by David Allman

Classic Scene June 12th small collection of classics attend at the Graham Hill Sprint June 18th Aldridge Lions show OMC asked to attend with Classics. Not our kind of show really doubt whether we would go back, only three club cars attended, the highlight of the day was the mayor of Walsall on visiting our display tried to steal Martins Imp see picture, “Drive it like you stole it girl” was commented by her entourage. Sunday 3rd July Bob Cotterell / Anton Bird organised the OMC stand at Lichfield’s Cars in the park. A super selection of cars and a packed stand all day, pictures next Revs. On Sunday 11th Sept OMC will be displaying at New Hall Mill open day at which is located off Wylde Green Road, Walmley, Sutton Coldfield. It is a grade 2 listed building and one of only two mills surviving in Birmingham. It is next to the lovely New Hall Valley Country Park and we are the only exhibitors so can we put on a good display for the visiting public please as this mill is only open on certain days of the year. Would be nice to see as many club members and their cars (classics & competition) there on the day. You are free to come and go as you please so even if you can only manage half a day please do come. For more details contact martinparkes518@btinternet.com and for more details about the mill look at www.newhallmill.org.uk We also have confirmation of a stand at this year’s NEC Classic Car Show (Hall 3 stand 490) this is 11m x 7.5m which is bigger than last year and the supporting post is in the corner! The theme, as I mentioned last month, is “Heroes & Heroines” so any ideas on a possible display would be welcome. Register your interest in displaying your car with Martin Parkes or Roger Tristram. Offers from OMC club members to man the stand are invited, these tickets are NOT just freebies for you to gain access and see the show, we will expect you to man our stand as club represent-

atives for periods during your days attendance. OMC “Classic Car Tour” Sunday September 25th, Entry Form enclosed with Mag. Start venue is The Jinney Ring Craft Centre at Hanbury and we’ll be finishing at the newly refurbished British Motor Museum at Gaydon with a dedicated OMC parking area. There will be an optional halfway halt so that maximum time can be spent looking around the award winning museum at the finish. (Editor.. recent visit to secure our visit - The museum has just had a total refurb / face lift and is well worth a visit. Now much better than previous with a superb Jaguar display added and the competition car section totally revamped including a decent display for the Monte Minis — no more than they deserve and long over due. The new building halls are also now open, on the ground floor a selection of various old and new Jaguars (overspill from Jags collection, I was told) not displayed just parked up, plus restoration and repair workshops, the upper floor is packed with weird and not so wonderful and not displayed in any order just rows and rows packed in tightly. There's some weird stuff, good job some of it was

ERC YPRES Rally, June 2016....report & pictures by Editor Ten OMC members plus one other made it over for our twelfth consecutive visit to the Ypres Rally which runs through the fields of Flanders in northern Belgium. Staying at the usual farm accommodation near Paschendale, we ask on the return journey will we go back ??. A definite anticlimax this year both in the ERC & Historic fields, the stormy weather made for treacherous stage conditions at times, looking at the video coverage on “U Tube I would be amazed if any crew said they had not had a moment or even seven. The quick boys cut the corners, ditch hook call it what you like to get quick times, this obviously drags loads of mud onto the corners, there are lots of corners and most have a very inviting deep ditch. With three passes of a stage on Saturday plus all the recce passes and stormy down pours it was obvious there was going to be attrition and there was big time. Thursday Shake down was very wet and we didn't stay too long, Friday evening sunny & warm for a change, we pick SS1 and watch all Historics, not so good this year very lacking in numbers and most of the quick Belgian boys missing, don't know why. They were followed by ERC mob, this was SS4 for them on the night, positioned on a spectacular straight jump, which was taken at full speed into a 90 left & right through a farm, some of the braking to get into the left was interesting to say the least!!! but made for some great pictures. It may have been a super place to spectate but with the wet & humid conditions the Mozzies were having a feast, on us, I got 17 hits. Saturday we try an old favourite, the up hill 90`s in the Kemelberg stage, I have taken some superb pictures here over the years, this year being no exception, however the day was spoiled with two big off`s in this stage half way through the ERC pack, stage was stopped for a good 90 minutes, the remainder of the ERC pack being diverted. We then get the Historics with many disappointingly missing and only a handful really trying. The delay screwed any spectating schedule so we cut across country to watch at the railway hairpin on the Hollebeke stage. A torrential downpour prior to first car didn't make the ERC pack any more interesting and with Historics on a late pass through we decide to head off for what turned out to be a superb evening meal in Poelkapelle near our farm accommodation. So to sum it up, weather not so good, ERC decimated by the conditions, too few Historics also many offs and brake downs and not as good quality as in previous years, no Ypres buzz at all in the service area most strange, mozzies a bloody nightmare literally, will we go back ? don't know yet but a change would be good. Classic Le Mans would be favourite but we will have to wait until 2018, how about Goodwood Festival of speed, WRC Poland also in the mix or the Donegal Rally, we will see. One good thing this year which was exceptional was the company present, totally first class especially the Leek episode (long story, which had been ongoing all day) the late Saturday night party back at the farm was a riot due to the Leek resurfacing, well you have to finish off the beers left over in the fridge some how ??? If you have not been before, go you will love every minute, but after twelve years a change for us is surely on the cards.

12 JUNE. 2016 CURBOROUGH Over the years the Graham Hill has mainly been blessed by fine weather. Not this time though! Expectations were high with a quality entry of 75 cars including 2014 winner David Owen, and Chris Green in their OMS, along with high flyers Jan Snape and Stephen Potter in Racing cars. Also we were looking forward to seeing fast times from Mark Williams in the rapid Peugeot 205, Pete Shenton in his Escort and Mark Williams’ Westfield. There was a good contingent of Owen members, particularly in the Standard Car class, including Paul Gough, Paul Glendenning, Derrick Wallbank, Howard Cottrell, Dave Greenwood in a Honda Type R and Paul Barnes (back on the scene after a long absence) in an immaculate Clio 182. Great to see regular Rich Yapp (MX5), and rally men Ade Baker (Focus RS) and Dean Baker (Escort). Once again we used the highly popular figure of 8 course and practice started at 9.15am in wet conditions with Dave Greenwood spinning on the first fast left hander. He admitted that he was not used to the car’s handling, being more familiar in his Westfield that was currently being rebuilt. Thankfully the weather improved sufficiently after lunch enabling everyone to complete a relatively dry first timed run. We saw some great sprinting, notably from the 450bhp Subaru driven by Andrew Cottrill, Graham Harvey (Cooper S), John Caldicott (Caterham), and FTD winner Jan Snape in a Jedi. The final results were assessed on the first run as the rain returned for the start of the second. It became worse, with torrential downpours, resulting in the non-appearance of many cars. There was no point in attempting a second run in the appalling conditions. Special praise must go the wonderful marshals at the start, Barri Wilmot, Mick and Dan Lister, who stood out all day and ended up being soaked. Also the Paddock Marshals, Ruth and Paul Langford and Darren Kiernan, suffered similar fate. As usual, it was all about teamwork. Lynn Whittick kindly looked after the entries and event paperwork, whilst Dave Pattison from Shenstone CC kindly again acted as Clerk of the Course. Thanks to Ann Ward - Results, Melvyn Cox - Course Controller, Simon Whittick - Commentator and Mike Ward/Wayne Langridge as Club Stewards. A regular feature now at the Graham Hill are the Classic cars who were allowed to parade around the circuit during the lunch break. Martin Parkes and Roger Tristram arranged the proceedings. Congratulations to Dean Baker in winning the Graham Hill Cup for Best Owen, and to Jan Snape. He kindly emailed me stating after several years of entering he was honoured to receive such a prestigious trophy in the form of the “new” Steering Wheel. In spite of the weather, competitors seemed to enjoy the day – That’s all that matters. BOB COTTERELL [Sorry no suitable pictures available, ED....]

Safety teams in attendance having to step in at the last moment to save the day at the sprint, an embarrassing situation for OMC.
