Healthcare is one of the most worthy and humanitarian professions in the world.
Let that sink in. You are serving one of the most vital and important industries in the world. Your vocation is part of the critical business of healing, helping people get the care they need whether it be at some of their most vulnerable times or even in the most joyful moments like ushering in new life.
Healthcare is a calling. A personal mission. And you are on the front lines - in a prime position - to improve the healthcare system in the United States. What we know for certain is that healthcare administrative costs and burdens are suffocating healthcare in America. Studies show fifty percent of all hospitals are poised to lose money by the end of 2022.
Provider burnout is at an all-time high, primarily due to the fact that the administrative burden has overcome their day-to-day work. Providers are spending less and less time with patients, and patient care is suffering as a result. And technological solutions often don’t reflect the providers’ and/or patients’ perspectives.
It can sound daunting. Perhaps unfixable. A challenge that is too big to tackle. But I don’t see it that way.
I believe Signature Performance will play an even bigger role in being an integral part of the answer. Think about this, no one else. No one else in the industry is solely focused on solving these administrative challenges. But beyond that, the place we find ourselves in is unlike anything we have experienced.
Our capabilities, award-winning solutions, and one-of-a-kind collection of subject matter experts as well as our collective talents, commitment, determination, and laser focus make it possible for Signature to positively transform healthcare.
We need to be obsessed with our vision of a healthier healthcare system—a healthcare system where access to care and the quality of care are second to none. The healthcare industry is hungry for difference-makers, like us. And we need to rise to this uncommon moment. We need to be awesome, not average. We need to dream big, but also roll up our sleeves and get to work. And, we are going to need to think differently.
In 1997, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, famously declared to the Apply community, “Here’s to the crazy ones…they have no respect for the status quo…because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
Signature Performance, you crazy ones, difference makers, and geniuses…let’s change the world.
Carpe diem, Allen

At Signature Performance, we know that Healthcare is complex and can be complicated at times. We are dedicated to our mission of improving the health of our clients’ business and making the lives of the people we work with better.
We know providers, we know payers, and we know the intricacies of healthcare administration. We strive to make an impact by sitting in the rare space of payers and providers in both the public and private space.
Did you know that healthcare administrative costs have soared to over 40% of the total amount spent on healthcare in the United States? Administrative costs accounted for less than 10% just 40 years ago. So what happened? Did healthcare suddenly become
exponentially more complicated? Shouldn’t new and emerging technologies make healthcare easier? While there is no clear answer, we feel as though we have the tools, dedication, and passion to get us one step closer to a healthcare system that cares for everyone.
At Signature Performance, we are on a quest to lower healthcare administrative costs and burdens so that healthcare can become more accessible, affordable, and efficient for everyone. From our technology services, operational execution, consulting services and program management capabilities, we know that our team can make a big impact in the healthcare industry. We are dedicated, passionate, and determined now more than ever to bend the curve of rising administrative costs and to make healthcare healthier for everyone.
To me, serving the healthcare industry goes beyond just my nine to five. Being on a mission to cut healthcare costs is an act of service to every individual in the United States and is something I take seriously. With rising costs as a consumer, and insurance policies being out of reach for some folks’ budget, it is a potential opportunity for people to receive the treatment they need instead of putting it off, or crunching numbers wondering how they could possibly afford it.
I lost my father unexpectedly at 16 to a heart attack as he did not want to have to burden the costs of cardiology visits, even with insurance. I, myself, was born with Microtia, a birth defect where one of my ears didn’t develop. After multiple reconstructive surgeries, the doctors discovered they were unable to proceed with the next steps of reconstructing, leaving me with only the option of a hearing aid that insurance wouldn’t cover.
With all of my experiences, to me, serving the healthcare industry is my opportunity to help save the next 16 year-old from experiencing the pain that comes with losing someone at a young age. It is an opportunity for that the next child that is born fully deaf/blind/handicapped/disabled to receive the treatment they need. Lastly, it is an opportunity to open the door to more affordable medical care and mental health treatments that people desperately need and deserve.
Serving the healthcare industry, especially our Veterans, helps me to serve my purpose of impacting as many people as I can. Working in Human Resources allows me to ensure that our associates have the resources and support that they need to be the best versions of themselves while serving our Veterans and impacting their lives. Having associates who feel supported helps them serve our Veterans and their families with zeal. Barack Obama said, “It’s about how we treat our Veterans every single day of the year. It’s about making sure they have the care they need and the benefits that they’ve earned when they come home. It’s about serving all of you as well as you’ve served the United States of America.” Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
As a provider experience representative for the Veterans Administration, I take great pride in being that initial goto person to provide assistance in all matters VA related. With every interaction, I have the fortunate opportunity to reflect the values and goals of the Veterans Administration. In doing so, I know that I’m making a positive impact in a large segment of the healthcare industry, and that makes my job even more rewarding.
What does it mean to you to serve the healthcare industry?josh tews | provider experience representative
Signature Performance is able to serve the United States’ healthcare system by providing uncommon administrative services. In our nearly 19-year tenure, Signature has been able to offer cost-saving, burdenreducing solutions to dozens of private hospital groups and federal entities. What sets Signature apart from the industry are the intentional, all-in Associates doing the important work on a daily basis. We are inspired by how our Associates take our mission to heart and can translate the impact they are making in their own words. Here are a few ways Signature is making a difference in the Healthcare Administration Industry from the difference-makers working for the clients and contracts we serve.
Our Optum group of Associates are the primary point of contact for Veterans needing to schedule appointments for care in the community outside of the VA network. Veterans do not always have the option to receive care at a VA hospital – this can be due to the VA hospital being too far away, or they may not be able to provide the type of care/treatment a Veteran needs. Our team does the research to locate providers contracted with the VA Community Care Network (VA CCN) for Veterans to ensure they are getting the right level of care in the most timely way. We are the liaison between Veterans and VA; so we make it a priority to help Veterans genuinely understand how the VA CCN works and what is available to them.
Our relationship with a Veteran does not end once an appointment has been made. Our team builds a steady line of communication with Veterans to obtain
appointment preferences, take note of any barriers to attending appointments, search and contact providers to schedule, and continue to do follow-up on referrals to ensure the Veteran was able to attend their appointment without issue and had a positive interaction with their community care provider.
Signature supports Optum in making sure Veterans receive timely care they can’t always get at a VA hospital. The more appointments and referrals we can get scheduled for Optum helps Optum keep costs down for the VA. The less time it takes to get Veterans scheduled for care, the less administrative costs are required, as referrals don’t need to be returned, causing more back-end work and additional follow-up with Veterans before they even receive care. By doing all of this, we are relieving Veterans of the stress and burden of trying to find a provider in the community for the care they need. These efforts efficiently streamline processes to eliminate the use of unneeded resources for both Optum and the VA to help keep costs down.
Signature’s CAEC Department is responsible for the intake of information after a Veteran sees a private provider for emergency events. No one truly plans on emergencies, meaning these services cannot be preauthorized like other procedures under the Choice Act for Veterans. It is per policy that VA needs to be notified within 72 hours after a Veteran is admitted into the ER to authorize the visit. Because emergencies can happen at anytime, our department operates 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure Veterans have someone to talk to in a timely manner.
When communicating with Veterans, representatives of the Veterans, providers, or VAMC employees we ensure to always act with our core values as we take each call, as we are often the first point of interaction someone will have with VA when calling to address an emergent matter. We own this responsibility by being the best representatives we can. We lead each call with knowledge, empathy, and respect. Callers will explain that handling these situations takes a toll on their day, week, or even year - so we do everything in our power to make the situation the best experience possible for them.
The CAEC group is always looking for ways to be proactive. We gather information and input it into the ECR system. This program uses predetermined parameters against the information we enter to populate a ruling on the notification. This will fast track getting the emergency room visit approved for payment under the Choice Act. This process used to take much longer and could lead to claims going unpaid or sent to collections.
VA works closely with our department and is ready to help with problems that we may experience. They take quick action to correct technical issues to ensure we are equipped with the most optimal systems. They value our input and actively seek it out; a recent example being their collaboration with our managers to test the environment while they were building the ECR program. Innovation is nonstop in our department and in our work with VA. We are not afraid to attempt adjustments and use the data to identify areas where money could be saved. Quite recently, our department was used in a pilot program for the Pittsburgh and Aurora VAMCs. The program realized positive success for the VA in cost saving measures.
The Revenue Cycle Representatives working on our Adventist group follow up on claims to determine why they have not been paid. We review Explanation of Benefits, talk to payers, submit appeals, and identify trends to resolve outstanding balances. We work handin-hand with Adventist to correct charges, identify issues, and ensure processes are working as outlined. By uncovering issues in a timely manner and getting corrections completed, we are able to help Adventist realize additional revenue.
Signature’s Revenue Cycle Representatives focus on simplifying the process through our quality and one touch resolution. We assist in generating revenue for 18 Facilities in California, Oregon and Hawaii. This additional revenue allows Adventist to put those funds back into the facilities we support and focus on patient care instead of the administrative costs of follow-up. Our team stays innovative and impactful by always bringing up new ideas, showing unmatched dedication to the mission, and overall team comradery. We are continuously looking to improve how we work claims and efficiencies we can implement. The impact we make to our clients and the communities they serve is what keeps us going every day.
kenn whipple operations manager“how does improving the health of our clients’ business help improve healthcare?
THE
Reducing administrative costs in healthcare helps keep the overall costs of health services down in turn. This means people have better access to the care and treatments they need to maintain their quality of life. Signature’s work with Veterans Administration and TRICARE aids in the reduction of these financial barriers, resulting in improved access and better health for those in our community and beyond. The work we do is essential to healthcare and truly affects everyone in some way, shape, or form.
My role at Signature as CBO Operations Lead is to ensure my client, a critical access facility and their two rural health clinics, continues to receive payer reimbursement in a correct, timely manner. I ensure that we facilitate their processes so they can focus on providing care to each patient. The extensive knowledge and training Signature has helped me gain in different medical systems, project management and understanding payer behavior allows me to stay ahead of the changes our industry faces and enables me and my team to be an asset our client can count on.
Working at Signature Performance as a Provider Experience Lead gives me the opportunity each day to help others on a larger scale and focus on our larger company-wide mission. An essential part of my role is being a resource for not only the Customer Service Representatives within our company, but for the customer on the other end of the line as well. Staying up to date on policy changes and providing support wherever I can on a daily basis is my job and I love being able to do it with my team at Signature!
By improving our clients’ business, we are helping to ensure that the products or services they provide can make a more significant impact. When our clients’ businesses are more impactful, doctor’s offices can also be more impactful. For example, they can see more patients because they spend less time doing administrative work. Ultimately, this positive impact can be felt by patients who are able to receive a higher quality and access to medical care in their time of need at a more affordable cost.
With Signature’s mission for improving the health of our clients’ business, we are passionate about doing what is best for our clients. By providing administrative assistance in our headquarters office, I am able to directly impact our industry leaders who are in the field making a difference for our clients. By streamlining processes and reducing burdens we can provide opportunities to foster a favorable patient experience and increase the quality of care, leading to a better healthcare experience overall.
One of the many ways individual contributors and front-line Associates are making an impact in healthcare at Signature is by expanding their knowledge about the revenue cycle. While we can learn a lot from our daily experiences interacting with providers and the consumers of healthcare, more than 20 Signature Associates have taken their learning a step further to pursue The Healthcare Financial Management Association’s (HFMA) Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) designation.
“I originally pursued the CRCR for professional development,” said Production Support Lead, Susie Frye. “Having different certifications under your belt can help move you in different areas of the company that you didn’t know you’d like or that you want to try. I work with the financial side of VA and the revenue cycle so understanding that process really helps with what I do.”
In addition to the potential for new career opportunities, those with the CRCR have found it beneficial to their daily responsibilities.
“I wanted to have a certificate that helps keep me updated on the rules and regulations on handling patient accounts for maximum reimbursement from the payer,” said Revenue Cycle Specialist, Mary Worede. “Having that certification and knowing precisely how to handle claims and resolve them is very important.”
Even a few Signature Associates who don’t work directly with the revenue cycle on a daily basis have pursued the CRCR.
“Having a better understanding of how the business of healthcare functions has benefits for me,” said Digital Producer, Addison Stoddard. “I’m able to better understand the day to day lives of the people I work alongside and it helps inform me when I’m creating training videos and materials that help showcase our expertise to external partners or clients.”
The CRCR certification addresses all areas of the revenue cycle and the ways it may be affected. Medicare, medical necessity, policies and procedures, the insurance verification process, HMOs, HIPAA, and corporate compliance are some of the topics covered in the training.
“Having this knowledge helps me understand the acronyms used when I’m on calls with the VA,” Frye said. “I don’t have to ask as many questions because I’m on board with what is going on.”
Associates with significant healthcare experience may find that the CRCR is a good way to stay up-to-date on the latest changes in revenue cycle elements.
“I’ve been in the business for 27 years,” said Implementation Specialist, Linda Campbell. “The CRCR taught me more about the rules and regulations and it refreshed my memory of parts of the revenue cycle that I’m not doing as often anymore.”
A deeper understanding of the revenue cycle contributes to Signature Associates’ abilities to make a difference in healthcare.
“No matter how much experience one has, I think having the CRCR improves one’s ability to make an impact in healthcare,” Worede said. “It keeps you updated on the rules and regulations. I would encourage people to get this certificate to help make an impact.”
Earning this certificate is no easy task. HFMA estimates it takes an individual at least 10 hours to complete all learning activities. Then, they sit for a 90-minute exam, which they must pass with at least a 70 percent. The certification lasts 2 years, after which the individual has to take the exam again to re-certify.
“You go in and start reading and you go ‘holy cow,’” said Campbell. “I had to do it in stages. I’m glad I did it, but it’s daunting.”
Worede agreed it took intentional studying to earn the certification.
“I studied it diligently,” she said. “It was interesting. It was like a review of what I do on the job plus more information that I may not have realized. It was also a challenge because the tests made me use my thought processes more, but I like challenges. I was determined to hunker down and study and take the time to understand what I was studying.”
Associates who have completed their certification speak highly of the value of the program.
“I’d renew it. It’s absolutely worth it,” Campbell said. “Anybody who’s doing anything with the revenue cycle would benefit from this certification.”
Other Signature Associates who are interested in learning more can take the CRCR courses on Signature YOU.
“It’s been a very good experience to have the CRCR and apply that to my work at Signature,” Worede said. “I’m pleased that I can use these skills and new skills that I learned while working on this certification.”
From our beginning in 2004, we have been captivated by doing the uncommon. We have set out to lower healthcare administrative costs. If you let that sync in…that is an extraordinary undertaking; and it is not the outcome of one singular breakthrough. In our nearly 19-year tenure, we have been advancing our mission, discovering inventive ways to dream bigger and do more, building lasting partnerships in both the federal and private sectors of healthcare, and re-imagining what’s possible with healthcare technology and innovations. All this and more has defined our impact thus far and sets the groundwork for what’s yet in store.

Although often imitated, there is no other list that comes close to Best for Vets: Employers,” says Mort Greenberg, SVP of Media Solutions at Military Times. “We stand by the rigor and soundness of this survey, which spotlights companies’ employment programs that help transitioning service members excel in their post-military careers.”
This credible recognition is made possible by the wonderful efforts from our Talent Operation and Human Resource Teams, our leaders, and all of our Associates who are working together to improve and support the lives of the people we work with.
The Best for Vets Employer Award is a powerful testimony of our Associates and their unique experiences at Signature. Signature proudly
employs over 50 Veterans, and numerous military spouses, children, partners, and families. Our Veteran and military families are uncommon difference makers, who have demonstrated the greatest act of service by serving our country, and are now working hand-in-hand with us to make a difference for the Veterans, clients, partners, and providers we serve on a daily basis.
We know the transition from a military career to a civilian career is an important experience in one’s life. The US Military Veterans we have the pleasure of working alongside every day at Signature have noted our similar beliefs, values, and drive have made the transition easier.
"As a 20-year Air Force Veteran, it was important to me to find another opportunity to continue serving after retirement. I am so grateful that I found a home at Signature Performance. Our core values of passion, courage, integrity, and respect resonate with me in a big way because they closely align with the core values I grew up with in the Air Force. I also take pride in knowing the work I do allows me to continue serving the Veteran community. I know I am empowered here by the ample opportunities for personal and professional development and growth. Signature genuinely values the diverse views and experiences of all their Associates. We are empowered to show up as our whole selves. I am proud to be a part of Signature Performance and cannot wait to see what the future holds for us."
– Jason Vanderheiden, HR Generalist Senior Master Sergeant (Retired), USAFAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are a plethora of benefits that can be the result of leading a healthy lifestyle. Simply eating a healthier diet on a regular basis can strengthen bones, lower risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers, as well as help the digestive system function in adults. Poor diet, high blood pressure, obesity, and tobacco use are four of the most common factors relating to premature death, as reported by Christopher Murray, of the University of Washington. In most cases, there are habits that can be modified in our daily lives to help prevent these health issues.
Creating a Healthier Signature Performance: Mind + Body
Mental and physical health are equally as important when it comes to one’s overall well-being. Signature's Chief Experience Officer, Mark Mathia, created the ALOHA framework to help Associates better understand and improve their overall well-being.
For Signature to fulfill its mission to improve the health of our clients’ business and make the lives of the people we work with better, we must invest in our own well-being and create opportunities for others around us to invest in theirs.
The ALOHA framework addresses five areas which are essential to overall well-being. Each of the elements operate in harmony with one another to cultivate and maintain a healthy overall state of well-being, resiliency, and happiness.
Doing hard things with success typically by motivation, talent, and courage.
Living your larger purpose to make a difference.
Others
Cultivating relationships and building community.
Health
Caring for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.
Acting on unusual or exciting growth opportunities that exist only outside of your comfort zone.
As one ALOHA graduate says: "ALOHA is a thoughtfully developed method to reflect on one's life, create goals that matter, and strive to achieve them through crafting a compelling 'Why'."
Another way Signature focuses on wellbeing is through our Signature’s very own Fit Club. The purpose of Fit Club is to create an environment for friends to gather socially
and exercise. John Scheneman, Operations Experience Manager, coordinates the weekly outings, typically consisting of walks at local trails and parks. Family members and furry friends often Fit Club members as they walk, run, or bike at the weekly meetups.
The Fit Club also likes to give back. In 2022, Signature’s Fit Club committed one walk a month to participating in the Keep Omaha Beautiful initiative. Keep Omaha Beautiful is a city-wide effort that matches volunteers with public parks. The groups of volunteers maintain our parks by cleaning up litter. Signature committed to cleaning up litter at Towl Park by our Omaha campus.
Earlier this year, Fit Club went national for a weekend as all Signature Associates were able to participate in the Corporate Cup. Collectively, Signature Associates ran close to 100 miles either in person or virtually.
Exercise is important for overall well-being. And better yet, our Associates have loved getting to focus on well-being with their best friends at work! We think it is best summed up in the words of Fit Club leader, John, “It has been rewarding to create new friendships, invest in established relationships, and have leaders connect with other leaders and new hires,”
For the first time ever, we dedicated an entire week to focusing on our ‘Whole-Health’ with the creation of Whole Health Week. Throughout our Whole Health Week we provided engagement opportunities for Associates, both at-home and on-campus, with the goal of encouraging our Associates to make small changes to lead healthier lifestyles. We had over 190 participants in our daily engagement activities through our Signature YOU platform, featuring a variety of healthy habits such as desk exercises and tips for moderation control when it comes to snacking. We encouraged people to skip the fast food drive-thru for a day, and distributed healthy lunches to over 200 on-campus Associates. In addition, we collected 50 healthy recipes for Associates to try out in their own kitchens with the creation of our own digital cookbook!
Our mission of improving the health of our clients’ business is best achieved when we first focus on the health of Associates. At Signature Performance, we provide engagement opportunities for our Associates to help them form healthy habits and lead an active lifestyle. When Associates are engaged and feel supported at work, it plays a great role in affecting their overall wellbeing.
