Starting May 7, 2025, every US resident will need to present a REAL ID compliant license/ID, or another acceptable form of identification, for accessing federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and boarding commercial aircraft. The card, itself, must be REAL ID compliant unless the resident is using an alternative acceptable document such as a passport.

The Act does not require individuals to present identification where it is not currently required to access a federal facility (such as to enter the public areas of the Smithsonian) nor does it prohibit an agency from accepting other forms of identity documents (such as a U.S. passport or passport card).

Unless there is another postponement, many people will be in for a rude surprise when they go to the airport on May 7, 2025/

Many people are asking how they are supposed to upgrade when there are no appointments available. As I tell my kids and employees, do not wait until the deadline to do the required work.

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005, and its enforcement for domestic air travel and federal facility access has been delayed multiple times. Here’s a quick timeline of the major delays:

1. 2008 – Original deadline set by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

2. 2009 – Extended to 2011.

3. 2011 – Extended again to 2013.

4. 2013 – Another extension to 2016.

5. 2016 – Enforcement began for some federal facilities, but air travel enforcement was pushed to 2020.

6. 2020 – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline was extended to October 1, 2021.

7. 2021 – Delayed again to May 3, 2023.

8. 2023 – The most recent delay pushed the deadline to May 7, 2025.

So far, the Real ID enforcement has been delayed a total of 8 times over nearly 20 years. The latest deadline is May 7, 2025, but given the history of delays, it’s possible it could be pushed again. Don’t risk it!!! Check your license RIGHT NOW. If it does not have a gold star get it upgraded ASAP
