Golfer goes to the emergency room

A man staggers into an emergency room with two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, he tells the doctor, when she sliced her ball into a pasture of cows. We went to look for it, and I noticed one of the cows had something white in its rear end. I walked over and lifted up the tail, and sure enough, there was my wife’s golf ball stuck right in the cows butt. That’s when I made my mistake.

What did you do? asks the doctor. Well, as I was standing there holding up the tail, I yelled to my wife, Hey, this looks like yours!

”Remember how blessed you are to see another day.”

So much cheaper

A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up and down the aisles. The salesgirl notices him and asks him if she can help him. He answers that he is looking for a box of feminine product for his wife. She directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter. The sales girl says confused, “Sir, I thought you were looking for some feminine product for your wife?” He answers, “You see, it’s like this, yesterday I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it’s so much cheaper. So, I figure if I have to roll my own... so does she.”

Not Existing, Living!

Life is made of choices. We have all heard this statement at one time or another during our journey of life. This is not just a saying to me it is my way of life. I learned at a very young age that our choices determine the successes that we achieve in our lives. You cannot live in a state of blame in the present for the lifestyle you survived as a child. You have the opportunity to remove yourself from a victim to a victor and into the life you desire.

My childhood was peppered with physical, drug, emotional and mental abuse. I survived countless nights of watching my mom physically abused, parental kidnappings, homelessness and drug abuse as far back as I can remember. These experiences have given me the ambition to move towards success by living limitless. I refuse to repeat the cycle..

I would spend my nights tucked in a corner of our closet covered with anything I could find to avoid hearing the beating of my mother and a kidnapping that I knew was coming. Hiding never worked because my dad always found me and kidnapped me after he completed his battering of my mom until she couldn’t fight back anymore. Although I was only a second grade child I vividly remember thinking how can a person keep enduring the abuse my mom chose to endure. Every night my mom and dad would meet up at the bar and I suppose it didn’t help that we lived behind a bar, then my dad would follow my mom to our home and the fight would be on. It always led to the kidnapping of me and sleeping in a car so my mom and the police were unable to find us. At that time I realized the repetition in the choices that led to that same situation each night.

Eventually my mom did get the courage to leave my dad. But she continued the same cycle of abuse. She entertained many relationships that resulted in physical beatings in the front yard. As a young child I remember shoving my mom in ditches to prevent her from being run over by the abusive men in her life. This continued into the teen years of my life. Not only was I fighting the abusive lifestyle my mom chose but watched all the adults in my life abuse every kind of drug you can imagine. It was nothing to come home from school and see lines of coke on the table and piles of weed. Looking back I remember seeing them as so dependent on this drug. It gave me a reason to keep as far away from drugs as possible. So I am thankful to those that showed me the real results using drugs has on your life.

As a teen I was lacking the attention that so many teens need. I had no sense of self worth or self love. So I turned to alcohol and partying to validate that I was good enough. I quickly learned the repercussions of choices I was making. I was sexually assaulted at one point by a male friend and had to go through his prosecution, which was anything but easy especially in a small town. That wasn’t enough to wake me up but it was quite the reality check when I became a mother at the age of 16.(Not a result of the sexual assault) Upon finding out I was having a girl I made the choice that we would not be a statistic, I knew I would have to work hard and I continue to work hard to make sure that is our truth. It is important to me that I am always a great role model for my 5 girls by living with self respect and determination.

I took those negative situations I was dealt in life and turned them into motivation and purpose. I am now a five times published author and motivational speaker in the field of self development. My passion is to use my story to show others that they are not a product of their past, to show them that even though we may face challenges we have the power to live the life of our dreams by breaking cycles and taking personal responsibility in our lives now. I am proof of this. My passion lies in using these unfortunate circumstances I lived as a child to encourage others to live a life of confidence and strength. Many people are faced with the same circumstances as I was and they are not sure about who they are.

I take personal responsibility for my life in the present. I do not place blame on anyone in my childhood. I look back on it and know I am a stronger person. I am often asked if I could change my childhood, would I? I am always quick to respond with a no. If I had to go through all of that to become the person I am today then it was worth it.

Today I make my choices for me and disregard the lifestyle I lived as a child. I have learned to treat myself with respect and honor and therefore influence and encourage the people in my life to do the same for themselves.

Making the choice to take life from the driver’s seat is up to you. It is easy to watch the world pass by while you are being a victim. Being a victim is the easy way out, removing that victim personality out of your life will give you the opportunity to see life from a whole new perspective. Each choice you make has an astounding effect of where you are

and where you are going in this wonderful journey of life. I have made the choice to work hard and life a fantastic life full of opportunity. I am now the proud mother of five amazing daughters that defy all odds of a teen mother statistic. I am also living my dreams as a multi-published author and Motivational speaker in the field of self development!

No matter where you have been it is where you are going that really matters. Take the time today and everyday to live limitless. (By R. Marvel)

What is the Singularity?

Even if you’re not big into technology, you’ve likely heard about the singularity. The singularity has been a topic of conversation for many decades but has increased in its prevalence in the 21st century as AI technology advances. But what exactly is the singularity, and how soon are we set to reach it?

The singularity ties in with the field of artificial intelligence (AI), which involves developing a piece of technology that can perform tasks typically associated with humans alone. While most artificial intelligence is non-human-like, such as that used in the manufacturing industry or cybersecurity field, today’s state-of-the-art creations are somewhat mind-blowing.

Take Sophia, for example, a humanoid robot that can converse with others and produce original answers. While Sophia would by no means be able to pass as a human, her development is representative of the direction in which artificial intelligence is leading. Though we cannot precisely predict the advancement of AI, it is thought that it will one day lead to the singularity. The singularity refers to the point in time when the development of robotics and intelligent machines will become uncontrollable. In this scenario, artificial intelligence will be able to surpass the brain power of humans and will be able to evolve on its own. This kind of AI would be able to think of ideas and concepts beyond that of human understanding and will be able to do things that we are not capable of.

In more elaborate terms, Britannica defines the singularity thus: [A] theoretical condition that could arrive in the near future when a synthesis of several powerful new technologies will radically change the realities in which we find ourselves in an unpredictable manner

A score of 200%

A proctologist had been in practice for 20 years and had settled into a very comfortable life with his future very secure. So he decided to fulfill his REAL dream and become an auto mechanic.

Having entered mechanic school, the former physician received the results of his first test back with a score of 200%. Confused, he asked the teacher why his score was so high.

“Well”, said the teacher, “the first part was taking the engine apart and you did that perfectly, so you got 50%. The second was to put it back together again and you did it perfectly and got another 50%. The other 100% was for doing it through the tailpipe.”

Thank you God!

A woman hurried to a pharmacy to pick up the medication. When she got back to the car, she found her keys locked inside.

The woman found an old rusty coat hanger on the ground. She looked at it and said, “I don’t know how to use this.”She bowed her head and asked God to send her some help. Within five minutes an old motorcycle pulled up, driven by a bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag. He got off his cycle and asked if he could help.

She said, “Yes, my husband is sick. I locked my keys in the car. Can you use this hanger to unlock my car?” He said, “Sure.” He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was open. She hugged the man and through tears said, “Thank you, God, for sending me such a very nice man.”

The man heard her little prayer and replied, “Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison yesterday; I was in prison for car theft.” The woman hugged the man again, sobbing, “Oh, thank you, God! You even sent me a professional!”

“Isn’t it funny how people who treat you like crud get offended when you finally do the same to them?”

U.S. 395 south of Gardnerville (Inquiry by Lisa Coffron, Minden, NV)

To Meg Ragonese - Public Information Office, Nevada Department of Transportation) In talking with fellow community members, just out of curiosity, are there any plans to widen highway 395 south of Gardnerville to Holbrook Junction/ Hwy 208, Nevada? This stretch of highway has experienced a substantial increase in traffic and fatal and/or severe traffic accidents.

From Meg - At NDOT, traffic safety is our top priority. In 2021, there was as many as 10,500 drivers daily on this section of U.S. 395 south of Gardnerville. Official law enforcement crash and citation records show two fatalities and 51 injury crashes between January 2016 and January 2020 on U.S. 395 between Muller Parkway and the Nevada-California state line.

The rate of fatal crashes on this section of highway is approximately 50 percent below the statewide average for similar roadways. While this crash rate is well below the statewide average, NDOT remains dedicated to the safety and mobility of all roadways in Nevada.

This year, NDOT plans to launch a project to reconstruct the aging roadway surface of U.S. 395 from the Nevada-California state line to just north of the Leviathan Mine Road.

As part of this pavement reconstruction project, NDOT closely evaluated travel speeds on this section of U.S. 395. NDOT plans to change the existing 55mph speed limit on some sections of the roadway to 65mph. With the vast major-

10
“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

ity of drivers traveling well over the currently-posted 55mph speed limit, these speed limit modifications are aimed at further harmonizing average travel speeds and reducing the potential of unsafe passing and other crashes related to incongruent travel speeds.

Also as part of this upcoming highway resurfacing, NDOT will extend the existing 2,000-foot northbound passing lane near Pine Valley Road by approximately one and a half miles, providing additional designated passing opportunities. Six speed feedback signs will also be installed on the corridor. Using radar, these signs display vehicle travel speeds back to the motorist, along with the posted speed limit. This feedback can help motorists ensure that they are not exceeding a safe speed.

The project represents an approximate $20 million investment in preserving and enhancing U.S. 395 south of Gardnerville.

Including these upcoming U.S. 395 improvements, NDOT has nearly $167 million in transportation improvements and programs planned in Douglas County over the coming four years. NDOT will continue to prioritize the most critical future Nevada highway priorities to enhance traffic safety and mobility across Douglas County and the state. Given constrained transportation funding, NDOT prioritizes transportation projects in collaboration with public input and local and regional governments to maximize the benefits of transportation investments.

Nevada has established an ultimate goal of zero fatalities

on Nevada roads by 2050. Tragically, speed is a top contributor to Nevada traffic fatalities. Speed influences the risk and severity of a crash.

The state’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan establishes statewide goals and strategies to support the goal of zero fatalities. These focus on the 6 “E’s” of traffic safety: Equity, Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Emergency Response and Everyone.

To save lives, traffic safety partners across the state focus strategies in eight emphasis areas which involve the most deaths and injuries on Nevada roads: safe speed, lane departures, intersections, pedestrians, motorcyclist, occupant protection, older drivers, young drivers and impaired driving.

Intruder

An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled, “Stop! Acts 2:38!” (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven.)

The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done.

As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, “Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.”

“Scripture?” replied the burglar. “She said she had an ax and two 38’s!”

Bless the First Responders

My husband Bob and I live in Smith Valley. We purchased a hay farm in Southwest Yerington in early January, were in the process of moving when the Wilson Canyon landslide occurred on January 10th. We want to get out of our present home as soon as possible to put it up for sale. Since the detour to our hew property is 121 miles one way, we’ve been packing, waiting for the canyon to re-open. We’ve been overly busy packing for when the canyon reopens, who knows for how long.

On the afternoon of January 24th, my husband got overly tired and dehydrated processing 17 years worth of “stuff” in our large steel garage. Fortunately our neighbor and friend, Mike Schofield was over for a visit. I was in the house unaware what was happening. When I did go outside I saw Mike propping Bob up against a Gator vehicle and he called 911. He told me to bring a pillow and a blanket. I saw Bob’s face, he was unconscious and his face was a disturbing ash gray. Bob had said he wanted to “go to sleep.” Mike was prompting Bob into a state of semi-consciousness until the Smith Valley Fire Department arrived and then transported Bob to the Carson Valley Medical Center Urgent Care where he stayed two days due to a blood clot in the lung.

I want to thank Mike Schofield for having the medical knowledge and being present, keeping Bob from going to sleep, possibly forever. Also, thanks to the crew members of the Smith Valley Fire Department First Responders, the CVMC Urgent care and the folks upstairs at CVMC: Dr. Carrone, M.D. and RNs Debbie and Kim. Having had past experiences with CVMC Urgent Care in the past I can’t say enough good about their professionalism and compassion for all patients who come in. And last, but not least Mike Schofield, owner of Nevada Beef and excavation and foundation services in Wellington, NV. We owe you big time, Mike!

Poo It Forward

Sometimes hikers leave bags of poo on the side of the trail, thinking that they will come back for them. Unfortunately, they tend to forget. Unfortunately, I tend to forget. One day, I did just that. By the time I remembered, I was in my car and just about to head home. Sighing heavily from guilt, I headed back up about a quarter mile where I remembered leaving my icky package. It was gone. Someone had picked it up on their way down and disposed of it for me. From then on, I have taken extra bags with me on my hikes rescued the unintentionally abandoned poo bags on the side of the trail. Knowing that I have done that same thing myself before makes me more understanding of the oversights of others. Poo it forward! (By Les)

How did the Pigskin get its shape?

American football may have evolved from soccer and rugby, but it turns out that the football was never truly designed, it just sort of happened.

The “pigskin” is not made of pig skin but is, in fact, made from cowhide. Of course, popular speculation has it that the leather exterior of the football was once made from the tanned skin of a pig, but it’s more likely that the football was made from a pig’s bladder. We may never know. Equally mysterious is the shape of the ball. If the sport evolved from soccer and rugby, how and when did the football gain its distinct shape –technically known as a prolate spheroid? Well, it turns out that the football was never truly designed, it just sort of happened. According to Henry Duffield, a man who witnessed a game between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869, largely considered to be the first intercollegiate game:

“The ball was not an oval but was supposed to be completely round. It never was, though — it was too hard to blow up right. The game was stopped several times that day while the teams called for a little key from the sidelines. They used it to unlock the small nozzle which was tucked into the ball, and then took turns blowing it up. The last man generally got tired and they put it back in play somewhat lopsided.”

So according to that story, the football that bounces erratically all over a field and can fly through air in a perfect spiral is not, in fact, the product of high design. At least not initially. Rather, it’s the result of a leaky sphere and some lazy inflators. Initially, football was a very different game – or perhaps

I should say games. There were kicking games and running games, but as those two games began to merge together, as rules began to standardize, the ball began to slightly stretch out in order to accommodate more types of use. The unique shape of the ball was somewhat formalized in the early 20th century and that form was exploited to great success when the forward pass was introduced to football in 1906. A miracle

I was in my garden when I got a call that my father had fallen from a 20 foot ladder and was in the hospital. I rushed to the hospital expecting that my father had some major fractures, but he was alright except for some minor cuts. When I told him that it was a miracle, he disagreed and told me, “Son, I had fallen from the first step of the ladder.”

3. Shamrocks are the national flower/emblem of Ireland.

5. Beer is one of the most widely consumed beverages on St. Patrick’s Day.

6.Legend says that each leaf of the clover has a meaning: Hope, Faith, Love and Luck.

7. 1962 marked the first time Chicago dyed their river green for St Patrick’s Day.

8. Guinness is one of the most popular drinks on St. Patrick’s Day.

9. Shamrock shakes are also very popular (and tasty!):

10. There are 34.7 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry. This number is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.

11. The real St. Patrick wasn’t Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family.

Can I see a Nurse Practitioner instead of a Doctor?

Despite the difference in title, they’re more alike than you think. Many medical offices and hospitals offer care provided by nurse practitioners, commonly referred to as NPs. These highly trained medical professionals can provide many primary care services or be part of your specialty care team.

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced training and education. In addition to the degree needed to become a registered nurse, NPs also get master’s or doctoral degrees. Like a doctor, a nurse practitioner can: Diagnose and treat acute conditions, Order diagnostic tests like X-rays or lab work, Manage a patient’s overall care, Serve as a primary care provider, Be board-certified in specialties like family practice or women’s health. NPs can also write prescriptions. In California, most NPs work under the supervision of a cooperating physician to prescribe medication to patients. “We can pretty much do anything that a doctor can do with the exception of performing surgical procedures independently,” says Sylvia Estrada, nurse practitioner in the Cedars-Sinai breast cancer program.

What’s the difference between an NP and a doctor? While doctors and nurse practitioners have many similarities, there are some notable differences. The biggest difference between the two is the amount of time spent on training. While NPs have more training than a registered nurse, they receive less training than a doctor.

They also are licensed differently. Example, in California, nurse practitioners are licensed by the Nursing Board and MDs are licensed by the Medical Board. Another difference is ease of access. Patients can often get an appointment to see an NP sooner than they can get in to see a doctor. And it may get worse. The US is facing a shortage of physicians, especially in primary care. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the country could see a shortage of up to 120,000 physicians by 2030.

You could also receive treatment with a different approach if you see an NP, says Estrada. “We have a focus on disease prevention and health education and counseling,” says Estrada. “These are unique assets engrained in our education that enhance our clinical interaction with patients.”

So when should I see a nurse practitioner? As the co-chair for Advanced Practice Nurses Council at Cedars-Sinai, Chona Melvin’s job includes informing the public about nurse practitioners. One of her goals is to help patients and their families make educated healthcare decisions and healthy lifestyle choices. “If you have the flu, need that yearly physical, or you’re wondering why your knee is making that noise, come see a nurse practitioner,” she says. “We are invested in making you feel comfortable, cared for, and healthy. Sit down Terry

A woman walks into the Social Worker’s office, trailed by 15 kids. “WOW!” the social worker exclaims, “Are they ALL yours?” “Yeah, they’re all mine,” the flustered mother sighs, having heard that question a thousand times before. She says, “Sit down Terry.” All the children rush to find seats.

“Well,” says the social worker, “then you must be here to sign up. I’ll need all your children’s names.” “This one’s my oldest – he is Terry.” “OK, and who’s next?” “Well, this one he is Terry, also.”

The social worker raises an eyebrow but continues. One by one, through the oldest four, all boys, all named Terry. Then she is introduced to the eldest girl, named Terri.

“All right,” says the caseworker, “I’m seeing a pattern here. Are they ALL named Terri?” Their Mother replied, “Well, yes, it makes it easier. When it is time to get them out of bed and ready for school, I yell “Terry!”, and when it’s time for dinner, I just yell “Terry!”, and they all come running. And if I need to stop the kid who’s running into the street, I just yell Terry and all of them stop. It’s the smartest idea I ever had, naming them all Terry.”

The social worker thinks this over for a bit, then wrinkles her forehead and says tentatively, “But what if you just want ONE kid to come, and not the whole bunch?” “I call them by their surnames.”

A man worked for a road crew. One day he woke up ill with a touch of laryngitis but being a dedicated employee he went to work.

The boss felt sorry for him and didn’t want him to do any physical labor although they were repairing a part of the freeway. He said to the worker, “Why don’t you go down the road and tell people to slow down going through the construction?”

The worker is glad for the easy day and does as instructed. He stops the first vehicle that comes along. “Sir,” he whispers, his throat feeling worse, “Please slow down, there’s a road crew up ahead.” “Okay,” the driver whispers back, “I’ll try not to wake them.”

March 17th - St. Patrick’s Day

Bodie 601 Boys - Part 1

Friday 1:56 am, January 14, 1881 - Mid-Winter Ball at the Bodie Miners Union Hall - Beads of sweat dotted his forehead; quick pulse pounded his ears. Deep in his heavy coat pocket, the cold iron felt good in his hand. He said nothing as he listened to the angry man slur his threats. The men agreed to settle this ongoing dispute away from the crowded Miners Union Hall. The music flowed out of the tall doors as he followed him down the boardwalk into the crisp moonlit night. Closely watching the staggering man navigate his way through the icy path, he seized the moment. Silently, the gun slipped out, he pointed and pulled the trigger. The tall, fairhaired man fell forward on to the frozen ground with a solid thud. He watched the dark river of blood melt the snow around the head of Thomas Treloar. The gun smoked in the killer’s hand.

Three doors down, Deputy Sheriff James Monahan withfriend, James Millner had just stepped out from the Post-Office Saloon when the shot tore through the night air. Both men immediately drew their pistols and carefully walked toward the figure standing over the body. Monahan acted quickly, disarming Joseph DeRoche and tying his wrists. Another man who had been walking near shouted that he had witnessed the killing. DeRoche said nothing and obeyed all orders.

News spread quickly that a man had been shot in the back of the head and lay dead in the snow. Curious onlookers filed out of the Miners Union Hall to observe the bloody scene. When it was discovered, the dead man was Thomas Treloar, a throng of angry men began to form.

An honorable dual between two men is one matter. A drunken brawl that resorts into a self defending shootout is accepted behavior and unfortunately, if an innocent bystander is wounded or killed, well, it is simply considered bad luck. Clearly, to shoot a person in the back is a cowardly act and considered nothing short of cold-blooded murder. It took no time for heated emotion to escalate into talk of lynching the killer. The general consensus was that the citizens should make a stand and let it be publicly known that such murderous acts would not be tolerated in Bodie. Deputy Monahan was well aware of the looming danger that he and his prisoner faced. With a sense of urgency, he escorted DeRoche through the growing crowd. He knew he needed to get him into protective custody before things spiraled out of control.

Joanna Treloar, walked with purpose passed the Doorkeeper and onto the boardwalk. The mob of people surrounded DeRoach and the Deputy as they made their way toward the jail. When DeRoche locked eyes with Joanna, he stalled and turned to face her, in a steady and clear tone, he announced, “Mrs. Treloar, I have killed your husband.” The crowd roared in disapproval. Joanna showed no emotion.

Arriving at the jail, Constable Kirgan registered and secured the prisoner. It wasn’t long after that an urgent message reached the Constable. The Bodie 601 Citizen Committee was organizing at dawn to review the facts and if necessary, apply justice.

Mono County had experienced two other such incidents recently and Kirgan did not want a ‘citizens lynching’ on his

20
“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

watch. After weighing the options and consequences, it was agreed that Deputy Farnsworth would secretly move DeRoche to the Standard Lodging House, guarding him until he could be safely moved to the Bridgeport jail for questioning.

Back at the scene of the crime, Coroner Deal loaded the body onto a sled to be transported to Mr. Ward’s undertaking parlor. It was decided that a Coroners jury would gather in the morning and hold a formal inquest. Suspicion rose around the new widow, who appeared calm and collected throughout the entire ordeal.

Had Constable Kirgan realized that Deputy Farnsworth had spent a good portion of the evening in the Temple Saloon indulging heavily in Bodie Brew, he most certainly would have assigned another Deputy to guard the prisoner. His decision would haunt him for the rest of his career.

It was near 3:00 am when Farnsworth and DeRoach arrived safely to the hotel room. Farnsworth, feeling the effects of waning intoxication, was in desperate need of some sleep. He locked an iron leg shackle on DeRoche with the second on his own, placed the key into his coat pocket and ordered DeRoche to lay down and go to sleep. Within minutes, the Deputy was snoring loudly in a drunken slumber.

At 8:15 am, loud knocks at the door woke Farnsworth. A bit confused at first by his surroundings, the realization that he was alone in the room brought a sickening twist in his stomach. He slowly walked toward the door; the empty leg shackle thumped across the floor behind him. Finding that the prisoner escaped while his Deputy slept, Constable Kirgan coiled back

and punched him.

News that the prisoner escaped while in custody, further damaged the image of law and order. There had been many complaints printed in the local papers, that the justice system was allowing criminals the opportunity to hire clever attorneys who had ways to create doubt in a jury. Witnesses were often bullied or paid not to testify. Of all the violent acts in Bodie, not one person was prosecuted. These foul men and women were free to roam the streets. The citizens of Bodie were frustrated and in fear that their community would be completely overrun by rough outlaws. This growing fear supported the need for a 601 Citizens Committee. Some say the Bodie chapter was 500 men strong.

A posse was quickly mounted; a full-fledged manhunt was on for Joseph DeRoche. The posse was made up of 12 men. Some knew DeRoche personally and could not deny the nagging doubt that this man, who many knew to be a quiet trusted friend and honest businessman, could possibly kill a man in cold blood. Mr. DeRoche had been a citizen of Bodie for years and lived in an upscale neighborhood. In fact, he built and lived in one of the finest homes in town. He owned and operated the Bodie Brickyard and employed several men who would testify that he was a fair and decent man. The question remained; what would make this seemingly quiet, law-abiding citizen, turn on his fellow man and commit such a ghastly offense? Stay Tuned for The End. Terri Geissinger is an Author and Bodie Historian.

Pisces

February 19th to March 20th - Pisces is the 12th and final sign of the zodiac calendar. It’s represented by a pair of fish and ruled by the planet Neptune (as well as Jupiter). Like Scorpio and Cancer, Pisces is a water sign; however, Pisces are known for generally being more laid back and agreeable than their other water counterparts. All water signs, though, are known for having strong feelings and occasionally being “wishy-washy.”

Pisces personalities are known for being one of the most empathetic of the zodiac signs, and they’ll do whatever they can to make sure the people around them are happy. They’re also artistic and use their vivid imaginations to think up ideas many others wouldn’t.

These kind souls can also be moody though when things aren’t going their way, and their generous nature makes them easily taken advantage of by less selfless types. Pisces can even become emotionally closed off if they’ve been hurt too often. In general though, Pisces are compassionate, thoughtful, and well attuned to their emotions and the emotions of those around them.

Alabama Fishing

A good ol’ Alabama boy won a bass boat in a raffle drawing. He brought it home and his wife looks at him and says… “What you gonna do with that. There ain’t no water deep enough to float a boat within 100 miles of here.” He says, “I won it and I’m a-gonna keep it.”

His brother came over to visit several days later. He sees the wife and asks where his brother is. She says, “He’s out there in his bass boat,” pointing to the field behind the house.

The brother heads out behind the house and sees his brother in the middle of a big field sitting in a bass boat with a fishing rod in his hand. He yells out to him, “What are you doin’?” His brother replies, “I’m fishin.’ What does it look like I’m a doin’?” His brother yells, “It’s people like you that give people from Alabama a bad name, makin’ everybody think we’re stupid. If I could swim, I’d come out there and whip you!”

You can’t take it with you

A wealthy man was diagnosed with a terminal illness and was determined to prove wrong the saying, “You can’t take it with you”.

After much thought and consideration, the old ambulancechaser finally figured out how to take at least some of his money with him when he died.

He told his wife to go to the bank and withdraw enough money to fill two pillow cases. He then directed her to take the bags of money to the attic and leave them directly above his bed. His plan: When he passed away, he would reach out and grab the bags on his way to heaven.

Several weeks after the funeral, the deceased man’s wife, up in the attic cleaning, came upon the two forgotten pillow cases stuffed with cash. “Oh, that silly old sod”, she exclaimed. “I knew he should have had me put the money in the basement”.

Division in a Family

Reconciliation often seems easier with friends, co-workers or even acquaintances than with family.

Several years ago, a few issues caused division in my family. Both sides felt equally justified in their anger toward each other. Family gatherings changed dramatically. Eventually we called a truce, but when we gather around the table for a holiday meal or to celebrate a birthday, things still feel tense.

Oh the deep cuts a family feud can make, especially between a child and a parent. We see this in 2 Samuel 15:13 when King David’s son, Absalom, turned against his father: “A messenger soon arrived in Jerusalem to tell David, ‘All Israel has joined Absalom in a conspiracy against you!’” (NLT) Absalom was angry with his father and in retaliation he turned an entire nation against King David. If only this son had sought reconciliation instead of revenge, things could have been different. Interestingly enough, Absalom’s name means “peace of my father.” Sadly, he chose not to reconcile his anger and rather brought strife, instead of peace, to David.

At the same time, David could have played a more active role in seeking reconciliation. But for some reason, he chose not to do that. (If you’re not familiar with Absalom’s story, or would like some comfort that even key people in the Bible had imperfect families, read more of their story in 2 Samuel, chapters 14-18.)

Is there strife in your family? Maybe get-togethers are awkward or always end in an argument. Or perhaps you have stopped talking to each other altogether. Many things can stand in the way of true reconciliation: pride, bitterness, anger, resentment and miscommunication.

We can’t overcome these in our humanness, but instead we can cry out to God and tell Him we need His help.

It is only then that we can “get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31-32, NLT).

The Lord created us to be in community with one another, including our families. To do this, we often need extra doses of grace and kindness! Some issues are tough and will take a lot of prayer and great discernment to work through. We can’t control what others think, do or say, but we can be responsible for ourselves.

Let’s take some time today to examine our hearts for bitterness, rage, anger and harsh words and determine if we’ve misunderstood the intentions of family members we are feuding with.

Being alone

A man moved to a mountain top to get rid of the hustle and be alone. One day he heard a knock at the door and no one was there but then he looked down and there sat a snail and it said it is quite cold out her, can I come in? The man shouted NO! Why don’t you all understand I want to be alone and he kicked the snail down the mountain.

One year later there was a knock at the door and no one was there but then he looked down and there again sat a snail and it said, What did you do that for?

April Fools

An atheist created a case in court against the upcoming Easter and Passover holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians, Jews and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days.

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, “Case dismissed!”

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, “Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holiday.”

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, “But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant. The calendar says April 1st is April Fool’s Day. Psalm 14:1 states, ‘The fool says in his heart, there is no God.’ Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned.”

Life is short

Grudges are a waste of perfect happiness. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should and let go of what you can’t change. Love deeply and forgive quickly. Take chances. Give everything and have no regrets. Life is too short to be unhappy. You have to take the good with the bad. Smile when you’re sad. Love what you got and always remember what you had. Always forgive but never forget. Learn from your mistakes but never regret. People change and things go wrong. But always remember, life goes on.
