In the urban future, nature has been overlooked by society’s chaotic, fast-paced city lifestyle. In order to achieve a positive progression, we must reclaim our connection to each other and nature. The future public library inspires users to nurture and learn about their earth- functioning as a central hub for resources and nature. As one of the last true public spaces, the library serves as a common space for uncommon users. Providing the opportunities to explore sustainable COME + GO practices, COMMON GROW offers community amenities, such as farmers’ markets and garden spaces encircled by resources, such as a seed library and material checkout, as well as social services, such as pop up clinics and tax help.

COME + GO

is a torus form that represents continuity and creates an outdoor central area for community use. Cantilevering over the North corner facing the urban cityscape and dipping into the earth on the South to allow views of Lake Merrit, the structure is a steel hollow tube lattice grounded by concrete. It is clad in ETFE and glazing, to allow ambient luminescence throughout the library and provide desired views around the site. COMMON GROW

THE [FUTURE] PUBLIC LIBRARY IS A REFUGE AMONGST A TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN WORLD THAT LOOKS BACK TO THE PUREST FORMS OF EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY IN HOPES OF POSITIVE PROGRESSION. ITS PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE A COMMON SPACE FOR UNCOMMON USERS THAT EMBRACES THE NEEDS, DESIRES, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN FOR EVERYONE WHO ENTERS- WHETHER SEARCHING OR WANDERING. EXPLOITING THE DICHOTOMY OF TRANSPARENCY AND ENCLOSURE, AND UNDERSTANDING THAT OPEN AND CONNECTED SPACES CAN SIMULTANEOUSLY CREATE FEELINGS OF EXPOSURE AND PRIVACY, THE BUILDING ACCOMMODATES THOSE SEEKING COMMUNITY OR ISOLATION. DRIVEN BY THE BELIEF THAT INNOVATION IS SPARKED THROUGH COLLABORATION, THE PROGRAMMATIC ADJACENCIES EMBRACE THE OPPORTUNITY OF EXPOSURE THROUGH OVERLAP. SPACES [DIVIDED] INTO MEDIA, MAKING AND MENDING ARE SURROUNDED BY MIXING IN ORDER TO ENCOURAGE INTERACTION. BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES AMONGST PROGRAMS ENABLES NEW IDEAS ACROSS NETWORKS TO FUSE AND FLOURISH.

OAKLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY ELISE WEBB

My public library exists in a future where nature has fallen by the wayside in the midst of a fast-paced city life. Therefore, I propose an urban library, one that serves to bring the community together in order to explore the many facets of vertical farming (hydroponics, aquaponics, & aeroponics), learn how to reincorporate sustainable techniques into their own homes, and provide amenities including farmers markets, cooking classes, and gardening space. Functioning as a central hub for knowledge & nature, the library hopes to inspire others to care for their Earth.
