Greetings,
With great joy I am happy to announce that more than 200 families living in the MonDak region chose Sidney Health Center to welcome their little ones into the world. This publication features all the babies that were delivered from January 1 – December 31, 2022.*
It is no surprise that healthcare has changed considerably over the past three years. Despite the many changes, Sidney Health Center remains committed to providing safe and quality care for you and your family. In fact, this year our dedicated OB department implemented a new postpartum hemorrhage cart for moms who require emergent care due to excessive bleeding following a delivery. A full article is featured in this edition recognizing the efforts taken to implement the emergency cart.
In addition, Sidney Health Center participated in a mobile simulation training through the Montana Obstetrics and Maternal Support (MOMS) grant to help prepare staff for rare obstetric emergencies. Tami Larson, OB Unit Chair completed the 6-month professional course, which allowed physicians, nurses and support staff to participate in this hands-on learning experience.
The labor and delivery unit provides a gentle reminder that with new life there is hope and inspiration for a brighter future. I encourage you to thumb through the pages of this year’s edition of the baby annual. Not only does it serve as a wonderful memory book for parents and grandparents, it features several articles related to health and wellness by local professionals. There are tips and resources as well as accomplishments and changes that we have made to provide the best experience for you and your loved ones. All the information is intended to help you live your best life so that you can raise strong, healthy families.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Our mission is to help you achieve your highest level of health and well-being. From birth to end of life, Sidney Health Center strives to provide quality care that is rarely found in communities our size. This publication is truly a reflection of the work we do in healthcare and the great communities we serve 24/7, 365 days a year!
Thanks so much for choosing Sidney Health Center in your healthcare journey. It is our pleasure to serve you and your family for generations to come.

In April 2022, Tami Larson and Jennifer Reid represented Sidney Health Center’s Obstetrics Department on an educational quality of care panel at the 2022 Montana Perinatal Conference in Chico Hot Springs. Both are long-standing registered nurses in the maternity ward at Sidney Health Center and presented the successful implementation of a hemorrhage cart with protocols.
A hemorrhage cart is a cart that is supplied and ready for postpartum hemorrhage emergencies. The well-stocked cart allows clinical staff to have quick access to equipment, supplies and medications needed for moms who are at risk for excessive bleeding following a delivery. The cart helps staff provide care quickly and in a safe professional manner.
To get the cart up and going, Larson researched what was needed in the cart and how other hospitals stock them. After researching, she worked collaboratively with physicians, pharmacy and nursing to ensure the cart was properly stocked with the necessary instruments, medications and educational tools to treat an emergency hemorrhage.
The cart is fully stocked and stored in the supply closet. If a patient is identified with a history of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) or displays risk factors, the cart is placed outside of the patient’s room during delivery. To standardize the use of the cart, flashcards are included to guide nurses through a risk assessment, stages of PPH, utilization of medications and when to request assistance from other departments such as lab or respiratory therapy.
Through education and simulated trainings, the clinical staff practices the protocols and becomes familiar with the medications and supplies on the cart. The flashcards make the process straight forward and helps to ensure safe, quality care in an emergent situation.
“We have experienced tremendous support from physicians and administration with the hemorrhage cart,” exclaimed Larson. “It’s very rewarding to streamline a process to ensure safe quality care is always a priority for our expecting moms. We have already started working on our next collaborative, which is hypertension in OB. I’m very excited to see the changes and improvements that will come with this initiative.”
Four Sidney Health Center nurses, including Larson and Reid, participated in the Montana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MPQC) to implement the Alliance in Maternal Health (AIM) Obstetric Hemorrhage Patient Safety Bundle. Since the implementation of the cart, OB has utilized the cart a couple of times. It can also be easily transported to the ER or surgery department if there is an emergency hemorrhage in their respective area.
Sidney Health Center is proud to be a part of MPQC and dedicated to continually improving and evolving patientcentered care. MPQC is a network of maternal and infant care providers and public health professionals working toward improving health outcomes for birthing mothers and babies. AIM is a national data-driven maternal safety and quality improvement initiative focused on reducing preventable maternal morbidity and mortality.

For years volunteers have generously donated their time and talents to the patients and staff at Sidney Health Center. In the Labor and Delivery unit, volunteers have donated knit hats, clothes, blankets and more. Many families who have their baby at Sidney Health Center have been treated to an extra special gift thanks to Malisa Reed.
About 10 years ago, Malisa was running a side crochet business called The Boston Bean Collection, named after her son Boston, where she sold hats, stuffed animals and more. Malisa sold the adorable collection of hats through social media and at craft shows.
“I was making more than I needed to make and decided to do something nice with them,” stated Malisa. Luckily, Malisa chose to reach out to Sidney Health Center. She contacted the OB department and inquired about donating her newborn hats. To her delight, the maternity ward was pleased to accept the gifts for their newborn families.
“At first, it started off with a few hats here and there and then I tried to keep up with all the babies that they were expecting. I absolutely loved crocheting them and coming up with new designs for the babies,” explained Malisa.
The donated hats include a variety of cute styles from animals to holidays to button style and more. “Our patients love receiving the hats,” shared Nursery Unit Chair Jennifer Reid, RN. “It makes them feel special to receive such a heartfelt gift.”
Malisa’s love of crochet came from her grandmother, Nancy Christmann, who crocheted Afghans for her granddaughters.
“She always had a project going and had her yarn out. I spent a lot of time at her house when I was younger and decided to try to crochet,” Malisa shared. “She taught some of us how to make a chain, and we would sit and crochet these long chains forever. Finally, she taught me how to move up to the next row and the love for it never went away.”
The gifts and lessons have become family heirlooms. “My grandmother was able to crochet my son a baby Afghan and it is something I treasure. Unfortunately, her dementia started getting bad and she struggled to crochet like she used to. I am so happy I can keep her talent going. She was always a big fan of the hats I made.”
Currently, Malisa is working toward becoming a registered
nurse. In 2009, she started as a Certified Nurse Assistant at Extended Care working for a couple years before taking time to focus on her son after he was born. When Boston started school, Malisa felt the calling of healthcare once again. She worked at Extended Care, with Personal Assistance and now as a UAP (unlicensed assistive person) on the Med/ Surg unit while she finishes nursing school.
Malisa is enrolled in the Miles Community College ASN program and is expected to graduate in May 2023. “As a wife and parent, it was important for me to stay close to home while finishing my schooling,” stated Malisa. “All my lectures are through zoom, and I am able to perform my clinicals at Sidney Health Center.”
Once Malisa passes her nursing board, she plans to continue working in her new role as a registered nurse on the Med/Surg unit. As no surprise, she has also expressed an interest in being cross-trained in the Labor and Delivery area.
“When I did my clinical in Labor and Delivery, a couple of the babies were wearing the hats I made. To see that truly warmed my heart,” shared Malisa. “I also love when someone shares a photo of their baby in one of the hats I made and donated. That has always been a wonderful feeling to see how happy the parent is and how cute the baby is in the hat.”
Sidney Health Center is fortunate to have Malisa as a part of our nursing care team. Her continuous generosity is a blessing to those we serve and true testament of providing “Exceptional Care for Life.”

There are many good reasons to make time to eat together as a family. Here are 6 of them.
Busy schedules have made it increasingly difficult to sit down to dinner as a family these days. In fact, over the past three decades, the number of meals families eat together has declined by more than 30%. But even if it’s not that easy to get everyone together for a meal, the benefits of eating together make it worth making family dinners a priority.
There are physical, mental and emotional benefits of eating together as a family.
Research shows that children who eat dinner with their family more often may reap these benefits:
• Better eating habits
• Reduced risk of weight problems
• Lower chance of depression, eating disorders, substance abuse or teen pregnancy
• Better academic performance
• Improved self esteem
• Higher-quality relationships with parents
Shared meals give families the opportunity to spend time together and reconnect with one another after a busy day. They help children feel secure and provide structure to their day. They improve communication and the sharing of values and ideas – and they contribute to the creation of traditions that tie families together.
When it comes to your child’s diet, a number of studies have found good reasons to get everyone to sit down for dinner together. This includes:
• Better nutrition. One survey found that kids ages 9-14 who ate with their families most frequently consumed higher amounts of important nutrients, like calcium, iron and fiber. They also ate more fruits and vegetables.
• More variety. Eating together provides more opportunity for parents to expose kids to new foods. This helps them develop better eating habits.
• Portion control. The average restaurant meal has 60% more calories than a meal made at home. Studies show that when more food is in front of us, we’re more likely to eat more. Parents can better control portions at home.
So the next time you’re tempted to head to the drive-thru on the way to one activity or another, think about why it may be time to move family dinners higher up on your list of priorities.

In August, Sidney Health Center participated in a mobile simulation training through the Montana Obstetrics and Maternal Support (MOMS) grant to help prepare staff for rare obstetric (OB) emergencies.
Emergency and OB nursing staff along with physicians participated in the training exercise. It was a great training opportunity that relied on teamwork, quick thinking and learning in a fast-paced situation. Participating nursing staff and physicians commented that it was a great experience, and they appreciated the opportunity to take part in a very realistic, hands-on training.
Tami Larson, OB Unit Chair completed the 6-month professional course through the Simulation Leadership Academy, which qualified Sidney Health Center for the mobile simulation training and allowed 20 staff members to participate in the OB trauma emergency scenario.
The professional education course that Larson completed prepares maternal health care provider teams across Montana to design, implement, and evaluate medical and behavioral health simulations at their facilities. The MOMS program provides participating sites with a training manikin to ensure lack of equipment is not a barrier to routine simulation practice.
Sidney Health Center in partnership with MOMS is committed to continued improvement of maternal health care across the state. Collectively, we are all working to make “The Last Best Place” the best place to have a baby!

It’s your choice… Dine-In or Take-Home. When you choose Sidney Health Center to deliver your baby, our Food Service Team understands the pressure of going home and settling in. To ease the pressure of making a meal or feeding your family, we implemented a dinner option prior to going home.
“We really wanted to enhance the experience for the parents and decided to start offering a Stork Dinner. The Food Service team came up with the idea of offering the choice of a Dinner for Two or a Family Pizza Dinner,” stated Jennifer Mercer, Senior Executive of Patient Experience.
The Dinner for Two option includes an entrée choice of NY Strip Steak, Alaskan Salmon or Chicken Breast served with a pick of potato or rice, side salad and sparkling juice. Families also have the option to choose the Family Pizza Dinner, which is a great opportunity to take a meal home for the whole family. Menu choices include a variety of pizza toppings, beverages and cookies.
Some of our patients have expressed their appreciation by completing a patient survey and giving a “Shout Out” to our amazing Food Service Team:
“Every kitchen staff member I met was very nice and helpful. Our ‘Stork Dinner’ was awesome!”
“The special meal after birth was so special to us! Thank you!”
