With great joy I am happy to announce that more than 200 families living in the MonDak region chose Sidney Health Center to welcome their little ones into the world. This publication features all the babies that were delivered from January 1 – December 31, 2021.*

Although healthcare has changed considerably over the past two years, Sidney Health Center remains committed to providing safe and quality care for you and your family. Through the implementation of screening stations, personal masking, limited visitation and other measures, we adopted a new normal to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and delivered 244 newborns.

The labor and delivery unit provides a gentle reminder that with new life there is hope and inspiration for a brighter future. I encourage you to thumb through the pages of this year’s edition of the baby annual. Not only does it serve as a wonderful memory book for parents and grandparents, it features several articles related to health and wellness by local professionals. There are tips and resources about spending quality family time, health related apps, like My Chart and ways our local Foundation makes a difference in the services we offer. All the information is intended to help you live your best life so that you can raise strong, healthy families.

From birth to end of life, Sidney Health Center strives to provide quality care that is rarely found in communities our size. Sitting down and having a meal together as a family is sometimes hard to do, especially with all our busy lives. However, no matter how busy we get, making time to eat together as a family is something we should do. This shared mealtime allows family members to share about their day, keep in touch, and can help build their family bond. In the Family Meals with Growing Children, handout created by Buy Eat Live Better/Montana State University Extension, (2018), they have provided some tips to help with planning successful family meals.

• Making these family meals a priority lets children know that eating together is important and something that is done in their family.

• Set “rules” to help keep the conversation pleasant.

• Plan for some family table talk: What is your plan for today? What was your favorite part of the day? Does anyone have any exciting news to share with us?

• Allow all family members a chance to talk and make sure to listen.

• Show children respect and good manners as they learn by watching adults.

To make family meals even more fun! Invite your child(ren) to help in the kitchen with making family meals or your family’s favorite sweet treat! Various kitchen activities are considered age-appropriate for children even as young as two years old. A blog post, Cooking With Children, written by Jessica Shultz, Illinois State University graduate student/dietetic intern (2020), has provided some suggested age-appropriate activities/guidelines for you and your family to incorporate in your home.

• Children ages 2-4 can use measuring spoons, help mix ingredients, and wash the produce.

• Children ages 5-7 can help crack eggs, peel oranges or hard-boiled eggs, and help with cutting up food items with a small plastic knife.

• Children ages 8-11 can use peelers, open up cans, read recipes, and help plan meals for the family.

• Children 12+ can identify and pair different flavors and textures of foods, understand the purpose of different kitchen equipment, use them, and follow directions.

According to Carrie Krug, MSU Extension Richland County FCS Agent, “some of the best memories I have growing up started in the kitchen making family recipes with one of my grandparents or my mother.” Making time for family meals might seem hard, especially in our busy world. However, having your child, grandchild, or other young family member help you in the kitchen will also help strengthen that relationship. It is also a great way to spend quality time together (Smith, 2020). In addition to strengthening your family bond, involving your child in the process could also create a lifelong love for cooking!

The Foundation for Community Care, the fundraising division for Sidney Health Center, plays a pivotal role in helping to keep equipment up to date throughout the organization. In 2021, the Foundation granted the OB/GYN Clinic $67,895 for the purchase of a Philips Affinity 70 Ultrasound System.

Ultrasound is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images within the body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions. In the OB/GYN Clinic the new system is used for both obstetric and gynecological patients and has been a much-appreciated addition as it is used daily in the clinic.

“The ultrasound is consistently used to provide care to our OB patients and also helps with management of gyn problems,” stated Dr. Malua Tambi, OB/GYN. “We cannot thank the Foundation for Community Care and donors enough for their generosity that allowed for the ultrasound purchase.”

In 2021, there were more than 11,000 patient visits to the Sidney Health Center OB/GYN Clinic. Services offered include routine and high-risk obstetrics, broad spectrum office and surgical gynecology, well woman exams, preventive care, counseling and health education, lactation support, and management of gynecological issues including menopause and infertility. ABOUT THE FOUNDATION FOR COMMUNITY CARE

The Foundation for Community Care has been funding healthcare in Richland County for 37 years. An endowment was established to ensure long-term growth and funding capability. Each year, the Foundation Board gives 5% of the total endowment value to fund healthcare grant needs.

More than $3.4 million has been granted to Sidney Health Center since 1984, as well as health organizations throughout Richland County. In 2021 the Foundation distributed approximately $355,723 in grants with more than $285,000 awarded to Sidney Health Center.

Same Day Clinic: Keeping you and your family healthy

Sidney Health Center’s Same Day Clinic is conveniently located in the Primary Care Clinic. The Same Day Clinic offers same-day appointments on a first come, first serve basis. Patients are encouraged to call 406-488-3963 during Same Day Clinic hours to schedule a time to be seen by the attending medical provider.

Patients can use the main Clinic Entrance on 14th Avenue Southwest in Sidney and check in at the clinic reception desk. This convenient clinic serves as an entry point for medical care at Sidney Health Center and is available to patients of all ages for immediate non-urgent problems.

• WEEKDAY CLINIC HOURS: 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM

• SATURDAY CLINIC HOURS: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Staffed by Rotating Medical Providers)

Caring for patients on weekdays are Joshua Deschaine, Physician Assistant and Adrianne Bryant, Physician Assistant to Dr. O. Pete Council, same day clinic medical director. Charlene Pontoriero, Family Nurse Practitioner also provides services two days a week. The Same Day Clinic provides care for those who are seeking initial treatment for a variety of health conditions, including:

• Cold and flu symptoms

• Ear infections

• Sore throats

• Urinary tract infections

• Cuts, lacerations and wound care

• Sprains and initial broken bone assessments

• Abscess incisions and drainage

• Eye foreign body assessment

Patients that present with chronic health concerns may be referred for follow-up care to one of Sidney Health Center’s doctors or their primary care provider of choice.

The obstetric department also offers a One-Day Childbirth Class four times per year usually held in February, May, August and November.

Registered nurse instructors review the following topics: relaxation, anatomy and physiology of childbirth, types of delivery, anesthesia, breast feeding and child care. The session is free of charge; however, donations up to $25 are gladly accepted to cover expenses.
