With great joy I am happy to announce that a record number of 252 babies were welcomed into the world at Sidney Health Center. This publication features all the babies that were delivered from January 1 – December 31, 2023.*

In the past year, Sidney Health Center has continued to invest in the Labor and Delivery Unit with the addition of new bassinets, a simple refresh to the six patient rooms, and expanded services for expectant and new moms.

This publication serves as a gentle reminder that with new life there is hope and inspiration for a brighter future. I encourage you to thumb through the pages of this year’s edition of the baby annual. Not only does it serve as a wonderful memory book for parents and grandparents, it features tips and resources as well as accomplishments and changes that we have made to provide the best experience for you and your loved ones. Specialized Physical Therapy available for Expectant Moms

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are profound phases in a woman’s life, marked by joy, anticipation, and significant physical changes. Pelvic health plays a crucial role in supporting and ensuring the well-being of expectant and new mothers. Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (PHPT) is an emerging resource for expectant and new moms.

The good news is that the Rehabilitation Department at Sidney Health Center can assist women in managing symptoms and educate them on ways to best support their bodies during pregnancy, prepare for delivery, and set them up for success postpartum.

Lacey Steinbeisser and Bess Reid, who are Doctors of Physical Therapy, have undergone extensive specialized training in treating many pelvic health conditions that arise during the pregnancy and postpartum period. They take the time to assess and tailor an individualized treatment plan, based on where women are in their pregnancy or postpartum journey, addressing their specific concerns safely and effectively.

As indicated, PHPT is a specialized branch of physical therapy that focuses on evaluating and treating conditions related to the pelvic floor. For pregnant women, pelvic health physical therapy can address a range of concerns including pelvic pain, incontinence, labor and delivery preparation, and postpartum recovery.

This specialized therapy provides important benefits for women during this stage of their life including:

1. Pain Relief: Pelvic Health Physical Therapy eases pelvic and back pain through targeted exercises and hands-on therapy during pregnancy.

2. Improved Pelvic Floor Function: This therapy strengthens and conditions pelvic floor muscles, offering better support for the growing uterus and reducing the risk of incontinence.

3. Enhanced Awareness: Education on pelvic health empowers pregnant women, leading to improved posture, body mechanics, and overall well-being.

4. Preventative Measures: Proactive Pelvic Health Physical Therapy helps prevent complications during labor and minimizes the likelihood of postpartum issues.

Introducing Nära: Bringing Moms and Babies Closer at Sidney Health Center

In 2023, Sidney Health Center’s Labor and Delivery unit enhanced the patient experience for the littlest ones in its care with the purchase of new bassinets. Say hello to Nära, a remarkable bassinet that’s changing the way moms and babies bond together.

To say the least, this isn’t your average bassinet. It’s been carefully designed to be super safe and cozy for newborns and their moms. In fact, Nära, the company that makes these bassinets, spent a lot of time studying what would make them just right for everyone, talking to lots of people and trying out different versions until it was perfect.

This special bassinet is all about making sure moms can be really close to their newborns. Each bassinet can adjust its height to fit any bed, so it’s comfy for the nurses and moms, no matter how high or low the bed is. And it’s made to be slim, so it doesn’t take up too much space but still lets moms stay close to their babies right from their bedside.

But that’s not all! Nära bassinets have a sleek design that’s soft around the edges and can tilt. This makes it easy for moms and nurses to see and reach the baby whenever they need to. And it’s fixed in place really well, so moms can feel confident that their baby is safe and secure.

Sidney Health Center is proud to bring Nära bassinets to families living in the MonDak region. It’s more than just a bassinet; it’s our way of making sure that those first moments between a mom and her baby are as special and safe as can be.

The obstetric department offers a One-Day Childbirth Class four times per year usually held in February, May, August and November.

Labor & Delivery Rooms Refreshed

As part of our commitment to enhancing patient care, Sidney Health Center recently updated the two Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum (LDRP) rooms and four inpatient rooms in the Labor and Delivery Unit. This mini-refresh served to uplift the existing décor while the organization plans for a comprehensive renovation identified during the strategic planning process.

In 2022, Sidney Health Center took a significant step forward by relocating the Rehabilitation Department, paving the way for crucial preparations to upgrade the Labor and Delivery Unit at the hospital. This refresh is an interim measure designed to provide a fresh and inviting atmosphere for the patients and staff until the full renovation becomes a reality within the next few years.

The facelift included:

• Removing wallpaper borders and adding a fresh coat of paint

• Replacing light fixtures including wall sconces

• Installing new window shades and counter tops

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation as we work towards creating a more comfortable and modern space for our expectant moms,” stated Tami Larson, Nurse Director of Labor and Delivery.

Nurture Nest Cafe

The Sidney Health Center Nurture Nest Cafe is held the second Tuesday of every month in the Sidney Health Center OB/GYN Clinic Waiting Room located at 214 14th Ave SW.

A nurse will weigh your baby and answer any questions you may have. Nurture Nest Cafe is FREE and offered to families with babies. Information provided is a valuable resource for breastfeeding support, but is open to all families regardless of their feeding method. No appointment necessary.

ABOUT NURTURE NEST CAFE

The Nurture Nest Cafe is an opportunity to:

• Meet and speak with a Certified Lactation Counselor and/or mom/ baby nurse

• Have your baby weighed and measured by a Registered Nurse

• Receive breastfeeding support and get expert advice about positioning, latching, establishing or managing milk supply, pumping, weaning and more

• Meet other moms and babies in the community

• Bring questions and concerns regarding newborn cares and/or findings
