Keeping your family healthy during the cold and flu season By Dr. James Hickey, Family Medicine The holiday season can be a time when people will travel great distances to see family, share proximity with many people in a home, and cook food for one another. However, most people undoubtedly have a story where they’ve came back from holiday travel or gatherings with more than just a full belly… usually in the form of a cold or flu. These illnesses are not enjoyable to experience, they can be frightening to parents when their young ones contract them, and they make up millions of ER, urgent care, and primary care visits across the nation on a yearly basis. Common cold viruses are the main reason that children miss school and adults miss work. Cold viruses infect the respiratory tract and each year in the United States there are millions of cases of the common cold. Symptoms usually include sore throat, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, headaches, body aches. Most people recover within about 7-10 days. There is no vaccine to protect you against the common cold. Influenza (Flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. People who have flu often feel some or all of these symptoms: fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (tiredness), some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. People who receive the flu shot typically have less severe symptoms than people who do not receive it. If a person contract flu, there are some treatments available if care is sought out early. Viruses can spread from infected people to others through the air and close personal contact. You can help reduce your risk of getting these viruses: Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Stay away from people who are sick. If you have a cold, you should follow these tips to help prevent spreading it to other people: • Stay at home while you are sick and keep children out of school or daycare while they are sick. • Avoid close contact with others, such as hugging, kissing, or shaking hands. • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as toys and doorknobs. You should call your doctor if you or your child has one or more of these conditions: • Symptoms that last more than 10 days • Symptoms that are severe or unusual • If your child is younger than 3 months of age and has a fever or is lethargic Your doctor can determine if you or your child has a cold or the flu and can recommend treatment to help with symptoms. *Evidence used for this article and further information can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/symptoms/coldflu.htm

The Arts and the Effect on Children By Cheri E. Friedman, Executive Director MonDak Heritage Center Research on the effect the arts have on children have shown a dramatic impact over time. According to Lisa Phillips in her article ‘The Top 10 Skills Children Learn From the Arts’ (Nov 26, 2012), ten needed skills have been identified that children learn by participating in the arts. They are Creativity, Confidence, Problem Solving, Perseverance, Focus, Non-Verbal Communication, Receiving Constructive Feedback, Collaboration, Dedication and Accountability. These skills are learned no matter if they are participating in theater, dance, music, or any of the visual arts. Let’s look at a few of these skills and see what a child will gain.

Creativity: Children who are able to use their

imagination are able to widen their perspectives when approaching problems. They can approach tasks from different perspectives and are able to think on their feet to changing circumstances. It becomes more natural for children who are creative to “think outside of the box” and will distinguish your child from other children who do not participate in the arts.

Confidence: Children who learn new skills build

within themselves the confidence they can succeed, and learn lessons from the times they may fail. For example, if a child participates in theater they learn memorization techniques, they practice stepping outside of their comfort zone, and learn how to correct mistakes through the rehearsal process. Children who perform also gain the confidence to go in front of large crowds to perform or give a speech.

Perseverance: Children who participate in the arts

Dedication: Through the process of learning and

implementing what they have learned, children learn that it takes time and effort to participate in anything worthwhile. Through rehearsals, classes and more, children will develop healthy work habits of being on time, respect for the contributions of others, and pride in the abilities they have developed.

Accountability: Through everything children learn

from the arts, the final item is accountability. If they were supposed to learn lines or practice music, or complete an art piece for a show, children learn that their actions do affect others in either a positive or negative way. Children will also learn to take responsibility for what they have done, whether good or bad. They will learn from mistakes, take responsibility, learn from them and move on.

learn that time and efforts are needed to succeed in any given art form. The rehearsal and practice to be able to dance, play music, speak a soliloquy, or learning a visual art form, takes time and effort to gain success. But over time, children who persevere will succeed in their efforts. The side effect of persevering is the confidence that each child builds in themselves.

Through participation in the arts, children end up with positive results over time. The arts can help parents build the character of their children in positive ways that will affect the children through their whole lives. Whichever art form you chose to introduce your child to, know that all of the identified traits will be built over time through their participation.

Collaboration: Most arts disciplines, especially

In addition to hosting events, The MonDak Heritage Center offers art classes that are educational and entertaining. The classes are great for adults, kids and families. Check out their website for upcoming events and activities at www.mondakheritagecenter.org.

the performing arts, requires individuals to work together to create a final product for the public. Through this process, children will learn how to work with others and value their input into the final piece. Once they become adults and enter the workforce, this skill becomes important to their success in their chosen field of endeavor.

The MonDak Heritage Center is open Tuesday - Friday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and on Saturday from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

What fresh fruits and vegetables are in season during the winter? By Katherine Schulz, RDN Sidney Health Center Dietitian We all know that winters can be long especially up north! Often it’s easy to rely on frozen or canned fruits and vegetables to get through the winter. Did you know there are fresh options that are actually “in season” this time of year? While these foods are not necessarily growing where we are, they are being grown fresh where it is actually summer! The options below are great to look for at your local grocery store since they are considered in season during our winter. For more information check out www.produceforkids.com/whats-in-season/

Keep your family active in the Winter When the weather is nice, it’s easy to stay active as a family. You can take walks, ride bikes, play catch and enjoy many other outdoor activities. But how do you help your kids stay active when the snow arrives, and the cold wind starts to blow? On mild winter days, your kids can still enjoy the outdoors. Everyone will have to bundle up wearing multiple layers, boots, hats and gloves, but once you get moving your heart rate will increase and help keep you warm. Kids can sled, participate in snow sports, play in the snow and much more. What about the days when it’s just too cold? Choose a location that incorporates physical activity. Locally there is indoor ice skating, indoor basketball courts and indoor pools. There are also many local athletic individual and team opportunities for youth. Another opportunity for the entire family to stay active is available at HealthWorks. HealthWorks is a family friendly fitness center that provides opportunities for the whole family, including a walking track, strength and cardio equipment, play area, racquetball court, and fitness classes. Memberships can be customized to work best for your family. For more information, call HealthWorks at 406-488-4631 or stop by the fitness center located on the Sidney Health Center At 1 month of age, HepB (1-2 months), campus. At 2 months of age, HepB (1-2
