Prairie Hills Gelbvieh - 2024 Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

1

Hello and Welcome!

We would like to welcome everyone to our annual production sale. Every year I write this letter and reflect on the last 12 months, and the challenges and high points we experienced through the year. I feel like 2023 is one that will be remembered as the year of extremes. We started the year in the middle of the worst winter we’ve ever had, with nearly 6 months of snow, eventually totaling over 110”. In April the temps skyrocketed to 90 and we made it all disappear in 2 days. Two weeks later we were right back in a drought. Somehow, we were lucky enough to be in the center of an isolated drought that resulted in no moisture until August 1….and then it started raining – 7” in 30 days! It wasn’t surprising to see our calves come in lighter than expected in the fall. Amazingly, with the challenges that the cow herd faced all summer, we had very good breed up and conception. While the weather has made things a challenge, the markets have finally turned in favor of the cow-calf producer! Good calves with good weights brought good money – an excellent reason to incorporate Gelbvieh into your cross-breeding program! No matter what changes and challenges life may toss at us, the one thing that is always constant is that good, hard-working cattle will pay the bills. We all ask a lot from our cattle, and more people are recognizing that Gelbvieh females are some of the hardest working mamas in the industry. This year we are offering the first sons of our new herd bull additions, including PHG Just Do It, PHG John Wayne, LVL Frontrunner, and GVC Jaw Dropper. We place a large emphasis on keeping our genetics fresh so we can continually offer fresh bloodlines that will work for our customers. We tend to say it every year, but the set of bulls we have to offer this year is the strongest, most consistent group of bulls we’ve ever had on the ranch. We are incredibly proud of these bulls, the way they’ve developed, and the future in front of them. Our goal is to provide you with genetics that not only make you money, but bulls you’ll be proud to have walking your pasture.

Klint and Maralee Sickler Family 2171 102nd Ave SW Gladstone, ND 58630 Klint Sickler – 701-483-5250 (home) 701-260-1853 (cell)

Galen and Marcia Sickler Family 10190 22nd Street SW Gladstone, ND 58630 Galen Sickler – 701-225-9212 (home) 701-690-6977 (cell)

We continue to use the mineral and feed programs developed for us by our nutritionists at Biozyme. The bulls are grown on a forage based ration that allows them to grow at a rate of 3 to 3.5 pounds per day, while still keeping them fresh and not getting overly fat. This has also allowed us to keep them on the same mineral program from conception through sale day. We continue to be impressed by their performance, and their ability hold together when they hit the pasture. This years offering is averaging 3.7 pounds per day since weaning – very impressive given the rain, snow, and heat that we’ve been given this fall and winter! The sale will again be held at the sale facility at Klint & Maralee’s. All cattle will be sold by video, with the bulls & females available for viewing within feet of the sale facility. No live animals will be entering the building. We will have the videos available for viewing on our website www.prairiehillsgelbvieh.com approximately 2 weeks before the sale. Any supplemental sale information will also be posted on our website. The animals will be available for viewing beginning at 12PM on Friday, February 9th, and 9AM Saturday, February 10h. This year the sale will be broadcast on the internet through DVAuction.com. Please make sure you’re approved prior to the sale if you’d like to bid online. We will also have people available if you choose to bid over the phone. Please contact Klint or Galen in advance so arrangements can be made. We would again like to thank everyone for their support over the last 39 years. Please stop by anytime to tour through the sale offering and cow herd. If you have questions on any of the animals, please don’t hesitate to contact Klint or Galen.

THANK YOU!

It didn’t take long to determine who would be Lot 1 in this years sale. La Bamba was the calf that everyone had their eye on all summer. He was hard to miss, having a herd bull look from 3 months of age. Just Do It set the bar awfully high after the gavel dropped at $52,500, and we loaded his pasture up with the best set of females on the ranch. With JDI breaking his tool this summer, the pressure is awfully high for a son to step up and fill his shoes. I really think Lot 1 is that bull. Incredibly deep, thick, and powerful enough to move a herd forward. His dam is a Leverage daughter that has been on the potential donor list the last couple of years. Granddam is none other than the VVGR 716T cow that has left a huge influence in our herd, retiring with 26 calves on record. Needless to say, we plan on utilizing him heavily in our program going forward, and look forward to working with our new partner on this exciting prospect! One of the biggest mistakes that I’ve made in the last couple of years is not partnering with McCarty’s on the 129H cow when they purchased her from the Ladies of the Beartooth sale. I knew she was going to be special, but if I would have known she would produce calves like this, I wouldn’t have hesitated a second. A full sister topped our female sale in December as well, so this mating is definitely a homerun! A true 50% Balancer that flawlessly combines power, structure, and smoothness into an exciting package. Loaded with beef, yet structurally correct, this guy moves like a cat. EPDs put him in the top 10% for CED, WW, YW, CW, FPI, and top 1% for Milk and TM!

If you’re looking for the heaviest weaning calf in the sale, here he is! 937 pounds off of mama for a 119 ratio! 82 It’s easy to see why the JDI calves are up front - it’s the Adj WW combination of performance with their extra shot of 937 eye appeal. Mama carries a 105 weaning ratio and would Dam NR have achieved Dam of Merit status if she calved 10 days 5/105 earlier. Grand Dam is a 3 time Dam of Merit, so the maternal power is stacked up on the bottom side of this MB FPI guy as well - he ranks in the top 10% or better for WW, -0.01 77.12 YW, Milk, TM, and CW! We probably should have tried to picture this guy, but in the end we ran out of sunlight. You’re going to want to search this out, but he won’t be hard to find! While he has the stamp that JDI puts on all of his calves, his dams influence is obvious in his length of body and smoothness. His dam is no slouch either, being a 4 time Dam of Merit - in fact a half sister topped our female sale last year. Look this guy up, you’ll be glad you did!

Boy these JDI calves get me excited. As a sire group they just do so many things right. As a group they’re incredibly even, but the dams really push them over the top. Lot 5’s dam is one of my favorites in the herd. Sharp fronted with a huge barrled middle, she looks how a cow should look. That 108 weaning ratio on her first 3 calves is just icing on the cake! With a scale busting 909 pound weaning weight, this guy will sire calves that top the sales, and heifer calves you can build a herd around!

Lot 6 is another JD son that pedigrees very similar to Lot 1 - in fact their dams are half sisters, both being daughters of the great 716T cow. With this guy being a line bred son of Dominance, he’s going to be a maternal power house. The EPDs are there to prove it being in the top 20% for Heifer Preg, Preg 30, Stayability, and $Cow.

The first red JDI son in the offering this year. This guy is special for a few different reasons. A few years ago we dug into the semen tank and bred a handful of cows back to Fighting Irish. If you’ve followed our program over the years, you’ve seen what the Irish daughters have done and how strongly we feel about them. To get a red Irish daughter was like winning the lottery - stacking JDI on top, and getting a red son is like hitting it twice! Oh yeah, and Dominance is hiding in there too - keep every daughter out of this guy!

Longmire probably received more attention than any othe red calf this summer. This guy likely would have been our futurity candidate for OKC. Ridiculously smooth and deceivingly thick, you’re going to have to look at him twice. When we purchased 8015F from the McCarty dispersion I had plans on how we wanted to flush her, but after JDI sold through our 2022 sale, I knew she had to go that direction. With this being her natural calf from that breeding, we’re counting the days until the full sibs arrive this spring. Check out the paper on this guy as well - Top 20% for TM, PG30, DOC, and FPI. Top 10% for WW, YW, HP, Scrotal, and REA. Top 1% for CW - that’s setting the bar high across the board!

A JDI son in a calving ease package? Absolutely! 65 pounds at birth, 815 pounds at weaning - and a top 10% for CE, BW, CEM, and Scrotal. It’s one thing to have the birthweight, another to back it up with the genomics. Structurally this guy can back it up with a shoulder that lays in the way you want a calving ease sire to be. Don’t let those scurs scare you away. Put him on a set of strong Angus based cows and they’ll knock those nubs right off.

The last of the Just Do It sons, but this guy is certainly no slouch. Homo Polled, Homo Black, and well above average across the board for his EPDs. He’s top 4% for Stayability, which isn’t a surprise when you consider his 3 time Dam of Merit - she’s also the grand dam of Lot 3. You can definitely see the consistency in the pedigree when you get them side by side. Obviously that 876 pound weaning weight isn’t a fluke either since mama has a 103 weaning ratio on 7 calves, and an 819 pound average on her 4 bull sons. Dang!

Lot 11 is the first Exact Combination son to make an appearance this year. It’s hard to believe that these are 80 the 5th set of calves from EC, but every year he gives us Adj WW a ripping set of bulls that are as even as you could ask for. 868 Leonardo has been one of the standouts of this batch, Dam NR and it’s easy to see why. On paper his 80 pound BW 6/103 to 868 weaning spread is impressive. He backs it up in person being super long spined, but still deep enough to MB FPI power up a set of calves. With EC, Dominance, Fighting 0.17 73.82 Irish, and a 3 time Dam of Merit in the pedigree - talk about versatility! Top the market with the steers, and build a cow herd around the daughters! Birth Wt

Yikes and Payday on the bottom side of the pedigree should make for daughters with near perfect udders.

Typically the name “Lucky” is reserved for dogs with 3 legs, or cats that survived the fan belt in December. In the case of Lot 25, “Lucky” refers to the group of cows that get to hang out with this guy all summer! Lot 25 is is another Homo Polled, Black son of Pathfinder - tracing back to the Dam of Merit “Cora” D12 cow, who is also the dam of Lot 14. With a Dam of Merit on the bottom, and EC on the top, it’s no wonder this guy posted a 5.4 ADG for the past 30 days!

We purchased Frontrunner from Warner Beef in 2022 to use on our yearling heifers. We made the mistake of selling too many daughters bred to him in our female sale Adj WW that year and never got a real good test on him. If he’s 852 going to sire calves that look like Lot 27, he’s going to get Dam NR used quite a bit harder! We actually featured L50’s dam 1/113 in last years female sale as part of a special choice lot. The buyer chose the red part of the package, so we got to keep MB FPI J07 and this stud inside her. 75 pounds at birth, 852 at 0.53 85.96 weaning, and EPDs that should really get a guy excited Lover Boy is a prime example of having calving ease, but not having to sacrifice performance in your cattle. Lot 26 is an honest to goodness “spread bull”. Check out the BW on this guy - 70 pounds, and then erupting to an 854 pound weaning weight! Apparently this guy isn’t Adj WW done either - he’s been gaining an even 4.0 pounds per 854 Dam NR day over the past 60 days. When you look at the cow 2/107 side of the pedigree, it shouldn’t be a surprise - his grand dam Miss Good Lookin is a 5 time Dam of Merit, and a 2 MB FPI time Dam of Distinction. Low Rider is the only son from Alcatraz we have on offer this year. We flushed the Blossom B83 cow that direction and got 3 calves from that mating - 2 heifers Adj WW and 1 bull. Alcatraz has really clicked well with our cows, 800 producing bulls and heifers that stand out for their Dam NR length, depth, and smoothness, while still have plenty 16/101 of performance and eye appeal. It’s hard to be an EPD leader in the Balancer game, but Lot 29 still manages to MB FPI post top 20% numbers for 7 seperate traits. This is one that I’ve had my eye on all summer. Out of the Schiefelbein Showman sons, he is the one that was 77 consistently on the top of everyones list when folks would Adj WW tour through the bull calves. I’ve watched the Showman 841 progeny at Hamilton Farms in AB for the past few years Dam NR and really appreciated the rib and structure he added to his 2/105 sons, and the maternal look he gave his daughters. When MB FPI the chance to buy semen in the US came available, we 0.03 77.39 jumped at the opportunity. Calves like Lot 32 are exactly what we were hoping to produce. Lights Out is a great representative 869 to lead off this group. 78 pounds at birth, exploding to Dam NR 869 at weaning for a 111 ratio. It shouldn’t be surprising 5/107 though since mama carries a 107 ratio over 5 calves. She’d be a Dam of Merit this year if she had calved during the MB FPI St Patty’s day blizzard instead of waiting for the storm 0.3 72.26 to blow through. This guy carries a good, balanced set of numbers across the board. Homo Polled! Birth Wt

One quality that I will give the Grinder cattle is that they have an awesome hair coat to them. This guy had so much hair when we clipped for the sale that we didn’t see those scurs until we hit them with the clipper! If I’m sitting on a group of high percentage Angus cows and want to add some power and some pounds to them, I’m giving this guy a hard look.

Lindbergh is another bull who’s really flipped a switch since weaning. He posted a 6.0 ADG on the last 30 day weigh-in. 80 pounds at birth, and nearly a 0 for his BW EPD, this guy can go on a variety of different cow types successfully. We did find a set of very small scurs on him when we were clipping, but they’re nothing a set of Angus cows can’t take care of.

Who found this guy in the pen? He’s a hard one to miss! He’s definitely a performance bull - take a look at the depth and middle in this dude. His 861 weaning weight, Top 30% WW, YW, and YG numbers are impressive, but to me the top 10% Stayability and Preg30 are equally impressive. Performance is great, but keeping productive cows in the herd is just as important. 3 calves for a 109 ratio, and a grand dam who is a 3 time Dam of Merit raises this guy up on my list!

I have a hunch lot 46 is going to make a lot of friends on sale day. This guy grabbed my attention when we did sale videos for his thickness and how he carried his width from his chest back into his stifle and quarter. Another stand-out that has Yikes stacked on the cow side. If you’re trying to build a cow herd, you need some Yikes influence in your females. They’re probably some of the hardest working females in the breed!

This guy has a little different backstory than his brothers. We purchased the pick of the Nelson Gelbvieh (Alberta) cow herd at the New Years Resolution sale last year. After doing some research, we quickly landed on the 230Z cow. Duane sent us photos of this 11 year old cow on pasture and you’d swear she wasn’t a day over 6. Looking at the production record of this Dam of Merit, her 30 (yeah, 30!) registered calves made her a no brainer. Once her calf was born we sent her straight to TransOva to begin flushing on her. As such Longevity was raised seperate from the rest of the calves in a different drought area. Named Longevity in honor of his now 12 year old mom with 15 active daughters in the US and Canada. If you’re wanting to make females with staying power, you need to add some Longevity to your herd!

We partnered with the Frobose family on a flush of the Y105 cow after they purchased her in 2017. Y105 is better known as the dam of the Betty B57 cow. A few years later we brought home 4 full sisters from that mating to Right Combination. J124 was always my pick to be the most productive of the batch. This mating to Eminence may prove me right. 74 pounds at birth, but well above breed average for his EPDs and real world performance. If you’ve been waiting to add Eminence to your herd, the extra boost from mama might make this the one to look at.
