OF THE PRAIRIE FEMALE SALE

Hello and Welcome! It is with great excitement that we welcome you to our fourth annual online female sale. We are thrilled to be able to present this group of females for your appraisal. Over the years it has been fantastic to watch the females sold in this event go on to their new homes and perform. Once again, we have put together a tremendous set of females for this sale. Whether you’re looking for a proven donor female, a junior project, or a female to raise the next ‘great one’ – there is something in the offering for everyone. The weather has certainly presented its challenges to us this year – from the worst winter on record, to drought 3 weeks later, we have seen it all. This fall has been a challenge by itself with an inch of rain falling in late October, followed by 12” of heavy wet snow. As such, it’s been a real challenge keeping these heifers clean this year. I apologize for the mud on some of these girls, but I promise you that it will wash out! Over the last year we have been working with past buyers to help showcase their PHG influenced genetics. This year we are proud to include 6 heifers from these forward thinking breeders. We truly believe that these animals showcase what PHG genetics can do in other operations. We plan to continue expanding this sale in the future, so as you browse the offering, consider for 2024 that animals that are the result of bulls, semen, or embryos sold by PHG, or raised by females that have been sold through this sale are eligible. This means that the calves inside of the bred heifers being offered may qualify for next year. We know that there are plenty of breeders trying to get started that might not have an avenue to market their livestock, and hopefully we can help them develop into the next generation of breeders. Check out the information in the catalog and give us a call if this is something that intrigues you. We would again like to thank everyone for their support over the last 38 years. Please stop by anytime to tour through the sale offering and cow herd. If you have questions on any of the animals, please don’t hesitate to give us a call!

THANK YOU!

What a heifer to lead off the 2023 Princesses offering - serious cow potential and donor prospect here! MCCA Lady A 302L has been a standout since birth and we couldn’t be more excited about the Just Do It ET calves born this year. It didn’t take long to see that this cross knocked it out of the park - this girl has a full brother standing in the bull pen that will likely gain plenty of attention in the 2024 PHG sale. Lady A’s dam, JC Pride 129H was our pick of the bred females at the 2021 Ladies of the Beartooth Sale. Selected for her powerful construction, massive rib, and donor cow potential, 129H’s offspring should follow her exceptional phenotype and perfect udder. Lady A should mature into a herd dominating cow with outstanding calving ease, milk, and maternal abilities all while maintaining that beautiful, feminine look. Pay attention to this one, females with this much mass and dimension don’t come along every day, especially when they’re wrapped in a package as pretty as Lot 1’s! What a tremendous female to lead off the red offering in this years sale! I have had my eye on this Gunner daughter all summer. She is truly one that gets better every day! We were fortunate to develop a partnership on her mother with John Carrel, after he purchased her from the Rockies to the Pacific sale in Montana. If not for a set of twins in 2022, 136E would be well on her way to Dam of Merit status already. A half sister sold through this sale in 2021 to the Phillip’s family in Missouri and was a great junior project for them. Layla is a female that works in a variety of different scenarios - she will look tremendous as a bred female in the show ring, and then turn her into a productive mama cow that will immediately start paying dividends! The homework has already been done for you on this one! Offered by: Prairie Hills Gelbvieh & John Carrel

For the last few years we have been watching the Showman calves at Hamilton Farms in Alberta and have loved the maternal look they show. When Showman semen finally became available in the US, I jumped at the chance to breed a few cows that direction, and boy did he not disappoint! Heifers like this really get you excited about a mating! I think Kylee found this girl in pasture when she was only a month old. Jet fronted, but as level as you could make one with a huge barreled middle - she’s the right kind! Her puppy dog demeneor is just icing on the cupcake! Her half brother was our high selling Balancer bull in our 2023 sale, so she’s backed with the maternal consistency of Paycheck, Irish, and Beechjet as well.

Lot 4 is another Balancer female that traces back to the Hamilton Farms program, sired by the impressive Alcatraz bull. I felt Blossom’s length, mass, and maternal look would be a great compliment to the depth and softness that Alcatraz added to his calves, and Miss Blossom L391 is the perfect combination of her parents. We don’t breed our Balancers to be pretty, frail little show heifers. We breed them to be functional, eye appealing cattle that will be productive in their future. If they can hang a banner somewhere along the way, well that’s even better!

We calved out the first daughters of Grinder this spring, and after seeing their udder structures, and the job that they have done on those first calves - I wish we had more! He’s a bull that has always produced more bulls than heifers in his calf crop, and this year is no exception with only having 6 daughters. Lot 5 offers a pedigree that will be an outcross to nearly the entire US. She has so much Canadian blood in her she probably knows how to play hockey! You have to admire the capacity and thickness this heifer offers, while still being good fronted and smooth on the move. That pedigree offers unlimited potential as well - breed her to nearly anything you want....from either country!

This Gunner daughter comes from the heart of our program. Our females have always been a huge focus, and L11 stems from the matriarch of our herd, 116T. L11 holds true to what we expect from this maternal line being super feminine, bold middled, and having excellent udder structure. The dam of L11 has been the ‘no miss’ kind, and we expect that level of productivity from her daughters. Combine that with the extra bells and whistles from Gunner and we think this female has big time donor potential. Offered by: Emily Hopfer-Cipriano & John Carrel

This red Gunner daughter is one that we should probably not be selling. Her Hamilton sired half sister sold in 2022 to David Slaughter as Lot 1. Ali always seems to grab your attention in the pasture or the pen, and if her mom wasn’t bred back the same way, I wouldn’t let her leave the place. The Ali cow family has sold quite a few daughters through this sale over the past few years, from Canada to Kentucky, and they consistently go out to be fantastic mama cows. Lot 7 combines that maternal consistency with the performance of Gunner into a package that will surely carry on this pedigrees legacy.

I have seen calves sired by Just Do It all across the United States, and even up in Canada - the one comment that I keep hearing over and over is how consistent they are! I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter what you breed him to, the bulls are going to be powerful, rugged, and stout, while the females are going to be pretty fronted, correct, and deep. Lot 12 is no different - with a pedigree stacking JDI on top of Stan, Dominance, and Payday, this girl is destined for great things!

Here comes another JDI daughter that traces back to the “Bubbles” cow family. The reason you see that family show up so many times is simple - they make darn good females! When you look at the maternal side of JDI’s pedigree, the B57 cow may be one of the most consistent to ever walk our pastures. She’s a female that we are constantly trying to replicate. The combination of B57’s lineage with the likes of Roy, Beech Jet, and Irish make this heifer incredibly intriguing to me. Don’t overlook this one due to her age. She may be an April, but she’s stacked for greatness, you just need to get her over the finish line.

When Hamilton got hurt last summer, we were needing an emergency replacement and found JMR James 105J at Bar-J-R Gelbvieh in Montana. He intrigued me with his relatively outcross pedigree, but phenotypically he struck me as a calving ease sire that could add some performance. Sadly it appears Hamilton had more cows covered than we thought, so we never got a real good chance to test James out. If his daughters resemble Lot 13, I think we could have certainly had him work some overtime!

Miss Afterglow K24 is a female that we had originally planned on offering in last years sale as an open heifer. Due to some processing issues at the lab with her DNA sample, we weren’t comfortable selling her until we could be completely certain of the results. I’ve gone back and forth on whether we should keep this girl and look at that error as a blessing in disguise. When we made the commitment to selling our front end in this sale, K24 rose back up on the list. This dark cherry red female has all the making to be a maternal powerhouse, and the pedigree to back it up. Legacy, Why Me, Black Impact, and Pop A Top are some of the best female makers we’ve used over the years - stacking them on top of each other is a no brainer. Phenotypically, you have to appreciate this girl for her depth and power, while still looking like a lady! She’s carrying the first service of our new herdsire JRI Troubadour who topped the 2023 Judd sale at $25,000. So much special in one package, there’s a reason she’s leading off the bred division! Pasture exposed to JRI Troubadour 270J490 from 5/15/23 to 7/10/23. Ultrasound shows a red 92.2% homo polled calf due 4/13/2024. Unable to determine fetal sex.

Take a good look at Miss Brittany! We typically don’t let many Exact Combination daughters slip through the gates - even more rare when they come from cows that are future donors! This combination of EC on Black Out really clicked, and as she matures Brittany is proving to set herself apart from the rest of the pack. A female with a tremendous amount of length of body, while still being angular and femine. EPD’s are in the top 20% for money making traits, and right where you want them for the other traits. No matter if you’re just getting started, or looking to add to your herd, this is the type of cow you can build around! AI bred to PHG Hamilton H10 on 5/26/2023. Lot 16 is one of the last Howard sired females that will be available, and she’s the perfect example of why we liked his daughters so much. A true performance female, she will certainly live up to her EPD profile. Howard daughters show exquisite phenotype as they get older, a phenomenal udder and teat structure, and do a fantastic job of raising their babies. Her dam traces back to the “Monica” 063X cow we purchased at the NILE from Kicking Horse Ranch. She is one of the easiest fleshing, tankiest made cows in the herd. The addition of Jaw Dropper to this lineage should prove to be a ‘can’t miss’ calf. Pasture exposed to GVG Jaw Dropper J29 from 5/15/2023 to 7/10/2023. If were to ask ChatGPT to draw you a picture of a ‘powerful tanky black heifer’, I think there’s good odds you’d end up with a picture of Lot 17. I’m not quite sure how this heifer slipped into the sale pen, but man is she the kind we try to make. Long and deep bodied, but with enough base width to give her the capacity needed for raising those scale crushing bull calves. The maternal side shouldn’t be much of a surprise since she stacks Paycheck on top of Super Flex. I’d bet money this girl will have a near perfect udder come calving season. We have offered a handful of Blackout daughters every year since this sale started, and every spring I get calls about how great the females did after calving. I’m a big fan of the Blackout females we have in production - to me they have the perfect balance of performance and phenotype. They’re incredibly versatile for matings, and they do everything we ask of them without missing a beat. Pathfinder is a bull we purchased in 2021 and had big expectations for. He gave us 5 heifer calves in that first calf crop, and then got injured in a fight with Gunner last summer and that was all she wrote. After seeing how these first daughters are developing, I sure wish we had a few more breeding seasons with him! The width and capacity these girls possess is exciting! Every year we try to raise the bar higher and offer something special. This might be one of the biggest opportunities we’ve ever offered. Never has a female made as quick of an impact on our herd as the F822 cow. She’s better known as the dam of the $31,000 PHG Hamilton H10 bull that we sold in 2021. Her second calf, an Exact Combination son, sold for $9,500 in our 2022 sale. Her third calf, a Gunner son, was the high seller in our 2023 sale for $10,000 - that’s an average of $16,833 on her first 3 sons. Her 2023 calf is a red Just Do It heifer calf that currently resides in the show pen. Not many cows can go 4 for 4 out of 4 different bulls! We have done some IVF flush work on her and feel like we’re at a point where we are ready to share Faye with the world. Faye is currently open and being flushed at TransOva in Onida, SD. Keep her in transplant and start building your own bank before spring calving, or work her into a fall calving herd. Whichever way you decide to go, opportunities like this don’t come along every day - don’t sleep on this one! Selling 100% embryo interest and 100% possession. If F822 is chosen as the donor for Lot 25 , buyer will take possession upon completion of that flush.

This gal came to us through the purchase of the pick of Nelson Gelbvieh’s herd in the 2022 New Years Resolution sale last year. After the gavel dropped, we began picking the brains of various breeders in Canada as to who they would choose – the answer was unanimously 230Z. Seeing that she has 30 progeny to her record made the decision even easier. When she arrived in the US we were blown away at the youthfulness this 11 year old cow shows, with perfect feet and the udder of a 4 year old. We plan on incorporating her influence heavily into the herd in the future.

We purchased this female from Judd Ranch in 2016. A maternal sister to JRI Gung-Ho, a highly influential sire for Royal Western Gelbvieh, she was an easy choice from their offering that year. Since her purchase, she has given us 5 bulls in a row – 1 landing in a seedstock herd in Montana, and one in Ontario. In 2023 she finally gave us a daughter from Just Do It, who single handidly cemented her dams spot in the donor pen. She’s a prolific embryo producer, averaging 41 ooctyes per aspiration, with 17 frozen embryos on average.

Probably one of my favorite females in the herd. To date she has 7 calves on record, 6 of them daughters. Her 1 bull calf was a sale topper in 2022, and her daughters have a weaning ratio of 109. Literally as close to a ‘sure bet’ as they come. If you want to know who the heaviest calf is going to be at weaning, just put the money on C17 and collect your winnings after the weigh-in. She’s actually the grand-mother to PHG Miss Firefly J11, the heifer that graces the cover of this years catalog, and last years high seller. I’ve wanted to flush her for years, and if Just Do It hadn’t gotten hurt, who knows when it would have happened. Good red donors are hard to find, especially with EPD’s like this girl has!

The definition of outcross Canadian genetics, C21 is our resident ‘power cow’. If you’re looking for a female to add depth and power, there are plenty of bulls to flush her to that could make good use of the maternal punch a cow like this offers. C21 punched her ticket to the donor pen in 2022 when she raised PHG John Wayne J32. You may know him from the cover of that years catalog, and now a resident herd sire at PHG. If you’re into power, breed her to power and get ready. If you want pretty, she’ll add the middle and rear and let the bull handle the front end. Regardless of which way you flush, you’ll have plenty of options with this outcross pedigree!

After seeing dozens of calves throughout 2 countries, I can honestly say that I haven’t seen a bad one yet. The bulls look the way you want bulls to look, while the females are stylish, clean, and loaded with eye appeal. These embryos will be full sibs to the heifer Kylee will be pulling out this year. She might be 12, but the girl has an eye for picking the good ones. This a mating you’re probably going to want to be on the front end of! IVF Embryos - You pay for 3, we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee. Exportable to Canada!

Loveless Gelbvieh in Utah purchased the option to flush Blossom B83 in our 2021 sale, and those Gunner calves hit the ground running last spring. Blossom continues to be a standout female, youthful in her appearance, and an absolute tank of a female, while still being femine profiled. We’re offering the choice of embryos from either E&B Plus One, or HF Alcatraz. One is one of the hottest Angus bulls in the US, while the other is one of the hottest Angus bulls in Canada. The Alcatraz embryos would be full siblings to Lot 4, and her brother that will be leading off our Balancer bulls this spring. I don’t think you can go wrong either way. Buyer has the option to double the bid and take both matings. IVF Embryos - You pay for 3, and we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee. Alcatraz embryos are exportable to Canada.

230Z is our newest donor female, and our choice of the Nelson Gelbvieh cowherd in Alberta. She is a prolific producer, with 27 females in the Canadian database tracing back to her. With her beautiful front, picture perfect feet and udder, we have flushed her to a variety of bulls to compliment her. One option that stood out to us was Schiefelbein GOAT 271. GOAT was the $232,000 high seller in 2022. We purchased a semen package for some flush work and are excited to see the results next spring. A truly unique breeding piece here. IVF Embryos - You pay for 3, and we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee.

I have never flushed a cow as prolific as MCFG 153R - averaging over 30 embryos per flush during her career. 153R is the dam of PHG Top Shelf, PHG Womanizer, PHG Missouri Basin, and PHG Bad Romance. This mating to RWG Why Me 9515 is sure to produce females that you won’t want to part with! A bull that was ahead of his time, Why Me moderated frame size, made tremendous females, and loaded every one of them full of beef. This is a heck of a chance to reboot some genetics and refresh the Gelbvieh gene pool! Conventional Embryos - You pay for 3, and we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee.

SEMEN LOTS

Keeping up with the theme of offering nothing but the latest and greatest, we’re going to switch it up for the semen lot this year as well. Rather than select just one bull to offer semen on, we’re going to open the tank and allow the winning bidder to mix and match and select a maximum of 10 straws total on any of our 5 newest sires. You select the bull or bulls, figure out the matings, and pay the shipping. This will be the only semen offered in the next 12 months on these sires, so don’t miss this rare opportunity!

Jaw Dropper came to us as the high selling bull from the 2022 Pot Of Gold sale in Colorado, raised by Pat McCarty at Grand Valley Gelbvieh. With top 10% CE and BW numbers, he has seen extensive use on heifers the last two breeding seasons. His first heifer calves are incredibly eye appealing, and his sons have been excelling in the feedlot since weaning.

We were looking for a homo black bull to add to our battery this spring and Jealous immediately grabbed our attention. We have been wanting to add the influence of the Kitty cow family to our herd for years, and Jealous was the perfect puzzle piece. I still remember the day when JW came across the scale and dad and I looked at each other and both said “Why are we selling this guy??”. He graced the cover of our 2022 catalog and probably generated as much interest as Just Do It did that year. After seeing his first calves this spring, I’m glad to say that we made the right decision by keeping him back!

The $25k high seller from the 2023 Judd Ranch sale, Troubadour has generated plenty of phone calls this spring. When I sorted through the sale catalog, I narrowed my list down to 3 bulls. I then had Ben McClure sort through the bulls and give me his top 3 based on phenotype. When Troubadour came in at the top of both lists, I knew we had a winner! We used Troubadour on a mixture of heifers and cows this summer and anxiously await those first calves in the spring of 2024.
