2022 - PHG Princesses of the Prairie - Gelbvieh Female Sale

Page 1

Hello and Welcome!

It is with great excitement that we welcome you to our third annual online female sale. We are thrilled to be able to present this group of females for your appraisal. It has been great to hear how the females that we sold in 2020 and 2021 have gone on to impact the operations of their new owners.

Once again, we have put together a tremendous set of females for this sale. Whether you’re looking for a potential donor female, a junior project, or a female to raise the next ‘great one’ – there is something in the offering for everyone. The 2023 AGJA Junior Classic will be held in Huron, SD in July, and there are quite a few open heifers that will make great show prospects.

We are incredibly excited to announce a new addition to this sale starting in 2023. We would like to begin spot lighting progeny that are the result of PHG genetics. Essentially, we are going to allow 10 animals to be added into this sale that are the result of bulls, semen, or embryos sold by PHG, or raised by females that have been sold through this sale. This means that the calves inside of the bred heifers being offered may qualify for next year. We know that there are plenty of breeders trying to get started that might not have an avenue to market their livestock, and hopefully we can help them develop into the next generation of breeders. Check out the information in the catalog and give us a call if this is something that intrigues you.

We would again like to thank everyone for their support over the last 37 years. Please stop by anytime to tour through the sale offering and cow herd. If you have questions on any of the animals, please don’t hesitate to give us a call!

Hamilton on the top side, with a DVE Howard sired female on the bottom side. This girl may be a little more moderate in her frame, but I think she’s got that little something extra to really pop as a show heifer prospect. She’s one that the kids found early, and frankly she’s hard to ignore in the pen. Super cool fronted, big barreled, and pleasing on the move, I could see her really shining when she hits the ring as a bred heifer. Given her pedigree, you can breed her to almost anything in the herdbook and be safe. Between her 8 year old granddam, and the predictability of Cornhusker Red on the top side, all of the guesswork is nearly done here! BLACK Very likely Homozygous Polled. Test is still pending. It’s no secret that purebreds are the focus here at PHG, but we’ve started breeding for a handful of Balancers every year with the understanding that the females will be marketed through this sale. Heifers like Lot 3 really have me second guessing that decision. This is the kind of female that I want a herd full of. Long spined, deep ribbed, yet wedge fronted and powerfulshe’s the kind that I’d love to have a herd full of. You want to talk consistency - how about a 4 time Dam of Merit on the cow side? When we were selecting AI sires, I was really impressed with Stock Fund for his depth and correctness, while keeping the performance of Growth Fund. The mating definitely clicked, and Lot 3 is sure to grab your attention - just think of the possibilities here! Breed her for Balancers, or use a high percentage and make some wicked 3/4 bloods! 8 LOT 4 HOMOZYGOUS POLLED DOUBLE BLACK Here comes a half sister to Lot 3, but with a little different spin on the cow side. COL 61S is the grand dam of RWG Yikes 1512, the $30,000 high seller we purchased at Agribition in 2012. Now 10 years removed from introducing Yikes into our herd, his daughters are setting themself apart as some of the most consistent, productive females in the herd. We’ve actually begun using Yikes in our ET and AI programs to combine his maternal influence with today’s modern looks. Calves like Miss Pegasus are what you can expect - long, correct, bold through their rib, yet productive in their design. If you’re a number fan, make sure you pay attention to the EPD profile on this girl. It takes a lot to be at the top of the list in the Balancer game, but this girl is way up there with 12 traits in the top 30% of the breed! Another female loaded with potential and possibility! 9 LOT 5 DOUBLE POLLED RED Very likely Homozygous Polled. Test is still pending. We purchased 5 straws from JLEA Tops Down out of the Junior auction last year and used him on a handful of heifers. After seeing the way that Lot 5 has developed this summer and fall, I think he’s one that we will use more of in the future! This dark cherry red female has all the making to be a maternal powerhouse, and the pedigree to back it up. Legacy, Why Me, Black Impact, and Pop A Top are some of the best female makers we’ve used over the years - stacking them on top of each other is a no brainer. Phenotypically, you have to appreciate this girl for her depth and power. While she has the look and the hair to be a fantastic junior project, I can really see her excelling in the pasture when her career is over. She’s the type of female that will get a junior setup for a bright future! DOUBLE POLLED RED Very likely Homozygous Polled. Test is still pending. I won’t beat around the bush on this girl - I really like this heifer. We purchased her mother as a bred heifer from Chimney Butte Ranch for her phenotype, and because she was carrying a PHG Caesar sired heifer. If Lot 6 didn’t have that half sister coming with a heifer baby of her own, this girl wouldn’t be in the offering. One of the first daughters of Pathfinder, she’s one that I can really appreciate. I love her color, her length, her presence as she walks through the pen, and her overall maternal look. Considering this girl stacks a double dose of Granite 200P2 with Majesty and Black Impact, it shouldn’t be surprising that she has the money making looks already. If this girl was to stay here, I’d breed her to Hamilton year one and hope for a heifer, and then look to either Gunner or EC to put some power on that maternal look. There’s the game plan, now you just need to take her home and make it happen!
11 LOT 7 HOMOZYGOUS POLLED DOUBLE BLACK K55 is the result of a bull purchased from Ledgerwood Gelbvieh to cover our AI heifers in 2021. We run our yearling heifers in a large pasture, and it really tests our young bulls. “Houston” as we nicknamed 0166H, ended up going down with an injury midway through breeding season. As a result, we only have a handful of calves out of him - K55 is one, and another is in the show pen right now. Both heifers are angular, feminine, and have puppy dog dispositions. I don’t know if we’re keeping the right one back, but she’s the one Emerson picked out as his show heifer, so I guess that’s that! With Super Flex, Beech Jet, and Lazy TV Sam in the pedigree, Lot 7 will make a whale of a producer in the future! 12 LOT 8 DOUBLE POLLED DOUBLE BLACK Very likely Homozygous Polled. Test is still pending. Kelly K46 will be one of the last natural sired Blackout daughters available at auction. We lost Blackout to a broken leg last fall, and after opening semen sales, his inventory is starting to get thin. We’ve been pleased with what Blackout has brought to our cowherd in terms of refinement, udder qualities, and disposition. He’s a bull that crosses really well with super powerful cows or heifers to ‘round out’ an animal. Kelly’s first calving Legacy sired dam is a prime example. A female with plenty of length and power, she needed a bull like Blackout to tie it all together. On paper she’s got all the pieces in place, and keeps her number profile between the guard rails on all traits. Super nice herd builder right here! JKGF NEW HORIZON C51 ET SIRE: MDR N.H. 13 LOT 9 DOUBLE POLLED RED Very likely Homozygous Polled. Test is still pending. If you’ve been holding off on adding an EC daughter to your herd, this might be the one that you’ve been waiting for. Tracing back to the great Lady A female we purchased from Fladeland’s as the Sweetheart Classic Champion, Katy K107 is backed up by a young cow who has been named Dam of Merit both years she has been eligible. That’s pretty impressive! This pretty young heifer has been one that nearly every visitor to the ranch has picked out this summer. She has that perfect combination of color, depth, and smoothness that draws your eye. Being backed by one of the most popular red bulls in the breed sure doesn’t hurt anything either. We haven’t sold many EC daughters, and there’s a reason for that - they get the job done! When you have the opportunity to snag an EC with this much predictablity behind her, I’d suggest hitting the bid button more than once! Holy cow, what a female to lead off the bred heifer offering! This is one of those heifers that we probably shouldn’t be selling. Luckily she has a black half sister that Kylee has hidden away in the show pen, easing some of the sting from selling this gal! There is just so much to appreciate in this pretty girl - she just screams maternal to me. Great front with an awesome wedge from her shoulder through her deep explosive rib, and sound as a cat on the move. Our Secretariat daughters have had phenomenal udders, and being backed up by the 716T cow family, she’s going to be an awesome mama cow. I already talked about her half sister that’s in the show pen, but her Granddam E752 has a daughter in the show pen as well. 716T had 14 natural calves, and 13 ended up in the show string over the years. Looks like her daughters are keeping the tradition alive. The icing on the cake - she’s

16 LOT 12 HOMOZYGOUS POLLED HOMOZYGOUS BLACK We offered a pair of E&B Plus One sired females last year as open heifers. This is the sister that was hiding in the back pen. With all the hype on Plus One and how good his daughters are, I wanted to see for myself how they would develop and offer one as a bred heifer. I think the results speak for themself here. If you’re looking for an easy fleshing, moderate, tanky female to add to your program, I’d suggest taking a hard look here at Lot 12. The grandmother to this girl is also the dam of Lot 3, so you can sure see some consistency in this cow family! Her dam was purchased from Ivers Family Gelbvieh from the ND Golden Rule sale and has been hitting it out of the park, being named a Dam of Merit in 2020 as a result. We finally have a couple of daughters working in the herd, so we were able to wrestle this one away from Galen & Marcia to offer in this sale. These EC daughters continue to solidify their home at PHG with their fleshing ability, udder quality, and willingness to do this through drought conditions while coming home bred in the fall. Probably one of the most powerful females in the offering, yet still refined enough you won’t be embarrased when the neighbors roll in to check her out. Blackout does such a nice job of refining his daughters where they need to be, yet keeping all that capacity and thickness. It would be hard to make one nicer on paper as well, with every number being in the top 30%, and a top 20% marbling EPD. With bulls like Blackout, Xavier, and Jackson in her pedigree, the guessing is eliminated here. Pasture exposed to LVL DLW Frontrunner 13J from 5/28/22 to 7/10/22. A red Paycheck daughter? Yep, there’s something you don’t see every day! I’m going to regret letting this one go. She’s one of the last Paycheck’s in the 2021 models, and we should really be keeping more daughters of the D25 cow as well. She doesn’t have the firepower to her EPD’s that some of the other heifers in the sale do, but I’ll tell you that mama is a Dam of Merit, and has nearly the same EPD profile. The proof is what they put on the ground! Speaking of which, this girl is bred a little different. She was exposed to PHG Hamilton H10, but he got hurt in pasture so we purchased JMR James 105J from Bar JR Gelbvieh in MT to finish his pasture. She sells pasture exposed to PHG Hamilton H10 from 5/28 to 6/14, and then JMR James 105J from 6/14 to 7/10. Ultrasound shows a red 99.9% bull calf due 3/23/2023. This date falls perfectly between Hamilton and James, but since Hamilton was hurt, I’m willing to bet she will be one of the only James bred females to leave

24 LOT 20 DOUBLE POLLED HOMOZYGOUS BLACK Paycheck has left an outstanding set of females in our operation over the years. They are the deep made, broody, calf raising kind that make you money every year they’re in the pasture. We finally got enough daughters built up that we can let some go to new homes and spread the wealth around. Lot 20’s dam was purchased from Ketterling Gelbvieh through the ND Golden Rule sale almost 10 years ago and has paid for herself many times over, being a Dam of Merit twice in her career. ~Thank you from our Prairie Hills family~

Every year we try to offer something new, exciting, and a step ahead of what we did the year prior. I think this might be one of the most exciting lots to come through this sale. We are offering choice of 50% embryo interest in lots 21A or 21B. I think awfully highly of both of these females, and have plans on incorporating both of them into our ET program in the future. The winning bidder has the option to double their bid and take full possession and 1/2 embryo interest of the animal of their choosing.

The only way to write this girls footnote is to be perfectly blunt - heifers like Firefly J11 don’t leave PHG. This is a cow family that I am absolutely in love with, and I could fill an entire page in the catalog talking about them. Miss Martin C17 has established herself as one of the best red female producers in our program. A 4 time Dam of Merit, she carries a 112 weaning ratio over 6 calves, and 5 of those are daughters. Her first and only son sold for $8,000 in our 2022 bull sale. J11 carries the stamp of Cornhusker Red with her dark color, long spine, and maternal presence. Phenotypically she’s hard to poke a hole in. And then there’s her EPD profile. She’s currently the #3 red purebred female in the entire herdbook for Marbling. The rest of her profile is in the top 30% or better across the board. Quite simply, they don’t make purebreds like this girl. Whether you decide to ride along with us and flush her, or want to take her home and make her a cow, I don’t think you can go wrong here. Heck, there’s a good chance the Frontrunner J13 bull calf she’s carrying could pay for her right out of the gate! Pasture exposed to LVL

Eminence daughters continue to make a splash across the country, and for good reason - they just flat work! Miss Brittany J07 is a perfect combination of depth, thickness, and structural correctness - while being refined and lady like in her presentation. Her dam, G59, is a female that set herself apart at ultrasound time, posting an actual IMF of 7.4, for a 214 ratio. We wanted to see what she could do bred to Eminence, and the result is on the paper in front of you. What really excites me about this female is the variety of ways she can be bred. Enough calving ease that you could throw some power at her and go for super cool bull calves, yet enough performance that you could flip the coin and breed her for show heifers. The genomic numbers show that mama wasn’t a fluke either, with EPD’s in the top 25% for nearly every trait, and a top 1% Marbling EPD of .63. I already have a few matings in mind for her, all you need to do is decide which heifer to bring to your program! Pasture exposed to LVL DLW Frontrunner 13J from 5/28/22 to 7/10/22. PHG Miss Brittany J07 Selling Choice of 1/2 Embryo Interest

Never has a female made as quick of an impact on our herd as the F822 cow. She’s better known as the dam of the $31,000 PHG Hamilton H10 bull that we sold in 2021. Her second calf, an Exact Combination son, sold for $9,500 in our 2022 sale. Her third calf, a Gunner son, will likely lead off our 2023 sale - just wait until you get a look at him! A full sibling to the embryos selling, he looks exactly like Hamilton did as a calf, but stouter and thicker (the meat-wagon came off the cow at an adjusted 940 pounds!). The decision for her to enter our flush program was a no-brainer. We only got a handful of IVF sessions ran on her, so these will be the only embryos selling from this girl for a while. Get sons and laugh all the way to the bank. Get daughters, and you better give me a call! IVF EmbryosSelling 3 embryos with a guarantee of 1 pregnancy if implanted by a certified embryologist. PHG will provide 1 replacement embryo per pregnancy to fulfill the guarantee. Embryos are exportable to Canada.

Loveless Gelbvieh in Utah purchased the option to flush Blossom B83 in our 2021 sale, and those Gunner calves should be hitting the ground right after the 1st of the year. Blossom continues to be a standout female, youthful in her appearance, and an absolute tank of a female, while still being femine profiled. We’re offering the choice of embryos from either E&B Plus One, or HF Alcatraz. One is one of the hottest Angus bulls in the US, while the other is one of the hottest Angus bulls in Canada. I don’t think you can go wrong either way. Buyer has the option to double the bid and take both matings. IVF Embryos - You pay for 3, and we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee. Alcatraz embryos are exportable to Canada.

716T has been one of the most consistent females to grace our pastures. Go back and look at the footnote for the Lot 11 bred heifer that is leading off that set of females. It’s easy to see why we keep going back to these proven matings that just flat work. Yikes has left a set of females here that continue to lead our herd as they mature. He’s a bull we plan to bring back into rotation as the cows have the maternal power to lead the herd.

Conventional Embryos – You pay for 3, and we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee

We purchased MCCA Filomena 8015F as the high selling female from the McCarty female sale in 2021 for $21,500 with the intent of making her our lead donor female. A flush sold for $5,000 in the 2022 National Sale to Cranview Gelbvieh, and so far those have been the only embryos offered from this elite female...until now. Filly is a female that tends to stop visitors in their tracks when they see her. Frankly it’s uncommon to see a cow with this much natural dimension, thickness, and capacity - yet she carries herself so gracefully and is so feminine, you can’t help but stop and stare. When it came time to flush her, PHG Just Do It J120 was on the top of the list. This might be one of the most exciting embryo matings we’ve produced. Just Do It was the $52,500 high seller from our 2022 sale, and the combination of his length and thickness, combined with this maternal powerhouse, has me very excited to see the calves this spring. Here’s a chance to be on the leading edge of new genetics, while taking home something truly unique and special! IVF Embryos - You pay for 3, and we’ll include the 4th for free as the guarantee. Embryos are exportable to Canada.

PHG Just Do It J120 is one of the most exciting bulls to walk through the gates of Prairie Hills. If you saw our sale catalog this spring, you know how much I think of this cow family and the genetic potential this young sire carries. I would have never predicted him topping our sale at $52,500, or the astute cattlemen who jumped on board and purchased semen packages on this stud. To hear of the cows that have been flushed to him truly humbles me as a breeder. I made the comment to Ben McClure after I picked JDI up at Origen that I liked him when I dropped him off, but I liked him even more when I picked him up. If you want to stouten up a set of lower percentage cows, put some power back into them, without sacrificing EPD strength, here’s your bull. We had a couple of breeders who backed out of their semen packages after the sale due to drought reductions, so we are offering 2 packages of 10 straws. Semen is CSS qualified and exportable to Canada. Public sales won’t open on this guy until 2024, so this is likely one of your only chances to get in on the ground floor of this rising star! Selling 2 packages of 10 straws of PHG Just Do It J120. Semen is CSS qualified for Canada and stored at Origen in Billings, MT.
