Finally, working in education is one of the hardest jobs in the world. However, its rewards are incredible as you get to influence the lives of many young people, help shape their future and develop them into amazing young people. What could be more satisfying than that?

I hope you have many rewarding and satisfying years at Shooters Hill, and I look forward to working with you.

the rest of the college staff have very high expectations and we expect each other to work hard and demonstrate a high level of commitment and passion for student success. I have embedded a culture of tolerance, empathy and understanding and expect staff to embrace this at the core of their everyday encounters, recognising that our students are on their own personal journey and their experience at the college must be positive, make a difference and help to transform their lives.

Geoff Osborne, Principal

WELCOME

I am a visible principal and I invest time to really understand and live the day to day life of the college. I meet with every member of staff over the course of the academic year, but at the same time I have an open door attitude, where you are encouraged to come and see me.

We take pride in the fact that our college is a diverse and vibrant environment of which I am privileged to lead. We believe in community and are a warm, friendly and compassionate college, recognising the small things making a big I,difference.alongwith

There are many opportunities to enhance your career at Shooters Hill with professional development being one of our key strategic intents. However, this is not a standardised model and we expect you to reflect on your practice, evaluate your impact and take responsibility to develop your own professional practice.

From the Principal

I am delighted to welcome you to Shooters Hill Sixth Form College, a place where our mission is to inspire and transform the lives of young people by supporting their transition into further or higher education, employment, apprenticeship or independent living.

This is a very exciting time to join the college as we are embarking on our new vision for the future and have identified five strategic aims to focus on over the next 3 5 years. Already this year we have invested over £1 million and have plans to invest a further 3 million over the next few years to realise these priorities.

The purpose of orientation is to:

• Enable staff to recognise and access the range of facilities, resources and support

An employee’s first impressions of an organisation have a significant impact on their integration within the team and job satisfaction. Induction is an opportunity for us to welcome our new recruit, help them settle in and ensure they have the knowledge and support they need to perform their role. This pack is intended to provide guidance, information and resources required to enable our new staff to have the best starting experience and feel confident in the transition into their new role.

• Have appropriate support from their line manager, team and other staff

Induction has three core components:

• Feel safe and welcome

• Induction to Shooters Hill College

• Enable staff to find their way around the College

• Building relationships.

• Are able to build and maintain effective relationships with their teams and all staff within the college and staff.

• Help them to belong to the college and to understand our College’s vision and values

Purpose

Introduction

The purpose of building relationships is to ensure all new staff:

• Orientation

All new staff to the College should receive an induction. The length of the induction programme and the activities used should reflect the job role and responsibilities.

Scope

Principles of Induction

New staff will be keen to begin their role and so the induction programme should be integrated with the start of their role so that they can begin to build effective relationships within their team.

• The programme, and in particular the first session, should be inspirational

• Activities should contain checks on understanding

The Design and Delivery of Induction Programmes - Expectations

Important principles for the design of induction programmes are:

• Understand, anticipate and meet the demands of their job role and responsibilities

• Make the link between their role, their development and a successful future at SHC

• Understand our College’s vision, values, strategic intent and how they can contribute

Induction Outcomes

• Make effective use of all the College facilities, resources and support

• Understand what they can expect from SHC and what we expect of them

• Take active responsibility for their development

New staff should get to know and understand the breadth of support available and have opportunities to meet the staff who provide this support.

• Core components should be covered.

• Sessions should be well planned and purposeful

• The programme should be accessible for all new staff

• Induction should enable new staff to:

• To ensure all new staff have a copy of the Induction Handbook and access to all key policies and procedures

• To ensure there is an effective introduction to the team and ways of working

Responsibilities

• To ensure organisational orientation; explanation of how the employee fits into the team and how their role fits with the overall strategy and goals

• To ensure that all new staff have all the information they need that is specific to their role

It is HR’s responsibility:

• To clearly outline of the job / role requirements

• The Induction checklist is a tool for all staff and their line managers to ensure that the core components of induction have been delivered.

• To coordinate the key activities and components of the new staff induction which covers the core components

• Develop an engaging induction programme that enables new staff to meet all members of the team and see the link to each person’s job role

• Collect and record centrally, all completed induction checklists

• To ensure all new staff meet with key senior employees

Monitoring

• To devise, implement and ensure new staff complete the new staff induction survey

It is the Line Manager’s responsibility:

• To allocate a peer mentor/buddy
