Senior Night Basketball and Golf Spring Hill- The Bears found themselves down 12 points to begin the final quarter on Monday night in a crucial game as they hosted Murfreesboro on Senior Night. Spring Hill had a tough go of it in the second quarter, as they fell behind before half and the Rattlers extended that lead at the end of the third quarter. Some great defensive play by the Bears and some big-time shots by Levin McGuire and other Bears early in the fourth quarter put Spring Hill right back in it. The Bears would claw their way back and take a 1-point lead with less than a minute remaining. The Bears would get a stop and control the ball with around 45 seconds remaining in the game. Murfreesboro would force a turnover and get a put-back layup to take the lead. Spring Hill could not connect on the game-winning shot attempt and fell to the Rattlers 56-55. The Bears allowed 12 second-chance points in the game, but they will look to clean that up as they will more than likely get another chance at the Rattlers in a couple of weeks. Levin McGuire would pace the Bears offense with 17 points, including four second-half 3-pointers. Jakob Perry scored 12 points and played great defense as he had a tall task guarding Caldwell from Murfreesboro most of the night (Karson Hamilton did a great job defending him as well). Maverick Mills added 8 points, as Andrew Wylie and Jackson Putz each scored 7 points. Austin Stone added 4 points and a handful of impressive blocked shots throughout the game. A lot of seeding implications are at stake this week, as this game was one of those games deciding key seeding factors for the conference tourney. Murfreesboro and Dierks played Tuesday night (no result yet) and the Bears travel to Dierks on Thursday as they Bears look to end the regular season on a good note and avoid the 4-seed for the conference tourney.

Whatley Words of Wisdom: Valentines is just around the corner. We will not get into how Valentines was started, it wasn’t very romantic! However, you can always tell when a guy is in love because he will forget about sports, cars, and hunting for a few days. When a girl is in love, she will forget about her phone for a few minutes….LOL. Do a sweet gesture for the day, then try a week, then longer. Guys, if you don’t think Valentine is very masculine, forget to do something sweet for your girl on Valentine's day!!!!
Recipe Good New Orleans creole gumbo Ingredients 1 cup all-purpose flour ¾ cup bacon drippings 1 cup coarsely chopped celery 1 large onion, coarsely chopped 1 large green bell pepper, coarsely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound andouille sausage, sliced 3 quarts water 6 cubes beef bouillon 1 tablespoon white sugar salt to taste 2 tablespoons hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or to taste ½ teaspoon Cajun seasoning blend (such as Tony Chachere's®), or to taste 4 bay leaves ½ teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes 1 (6 ounce) can tomato sauce 4 teaspoons file powder, divided 2 tablespoons bacon drippings 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen cut okra, thawed 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar 1 pound lump crabmeat 3 pounds uncooked medium shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Instructions Directions Step 1 Gather all ingredients. Step2 Make the roux: Whisk together flour and 3/4 cup bacon drippings in a large, heavy saucepan over medium-low heat until smooth. Cook roux, whisking constantly, until it turns a rich mahogany brown color. This can take 20 to 30 minutes; watch heat carefully and whisk constantly or roux will burn. Remove from heat; continue whisking until mixture stops cooking. Step 3 Make the gumbo: Place celery, onion, green bell pepper, and garlic into the work bowl of a food processor, and pulse until all vegetables are very finely chopped. Step 4 Stir vegetables into the roux, and mix in sausage. Bring mixture to a simmer over medium-low heat, and cook until vegetables are tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. Step 5 Combine water and beef bouillon cubes in a large Dutch oven or soup pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir until bouillon cubes dissolve, then whisk roux mixture into the boiling water. Step 6 Reduce heat to a simmer and mix in sugar, salt, hot pepper sauce, Cajun seasoning, bay leaves, thyme, stewed tomatoes, and tomato sauce. Simmer soup over low heat for 1 hour; mix in 2 teaspoons of file gumbo powder at the 45-minute mark. Step 7 Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings in a skillet over medium heat. Add okra and vinegar and cook for 15 minutes; remove okra with a slotted spoon, and stir into the simmering gumbo. Step 8 Mix in crabmeat, shrimp, and Worcestershire sauce, and simmer until flavors have blended, 45 more minutes. Stir in 2 more teaspoons of file gumbo powder just before serving. Step 9 Serve hot and enjoy!

I knew that I needed to change from my previous employment. I already knew a few people who worked here (Mr. & Mrs. Steed, Coach & Mrs.Whatley, Mrs. Ashley Davis), and I had enjoyed working with them previously. They had good things to say about working here, so when Spring Hill had a Math opening, I applied. This is my second year at Spring Hill. I have been married to Tim Stegall for 6 years. He is retired from the Air Force and is now a locksmith. I have a step-son, Tyler Stegall. He is 18 and is a senior at Blevins. My favorite thing about Spring Hill is the friendliness and respect shown by my students and adults. This is my 32nd year teaching high school students (5 years at Mineral Springs, 25 years at Blevins, and now 2 at Spring Hill). I also taught Math at night for about 10 years at UAHT. I'm licensed in 7-12 math, PK-12 Lidary, and 4-12 Computer Science. Besides a husband and a step-son, I have 1 brother, 3 sisters, 4 nieces, and 2 nephews. I enjoy reading, working puzzles, and playing the piano.
Writers Block Ethan Kidd is a second-year journalism student. He chose this class because he likes to help put the newspaper together. Ethan’s role in the newspaper is truck of the hill. He chose this role because it is easy for him. His favorite part of his role is getting to look at all the trucks and being able to get it done fast. Outside of school Ethan has started making pens and does a lot of other fun things. Ethan says he could not have a job in journalism because he would not want to sit in an office. He has learned how to write more and speak in public in this class. Ethan plans to take journalism next year as well. If he could pick another role it would be Whatleys words of wisdom and principal’s corner.

Kelsi Korenek is a Spring Hill Senior who plans to attend Drury University or UAHT after graduation. Her goal for this year is to try to maintain high grades and make many many memories. Kelsi’s current plan is to be a Surgical tech to see if the surgical field is truly where she wants to be before dedicating 15 years to being a Surgeon. Kelsi will miss all the amazing teachers she’s had, the staff she’s met, and the students she’s befriended. “My biggest advice for underclassmen is to never let anyone decide for you! Always follow your heart and trust your intentions,” Kelsi states. Kelsi has attended Spring Hill her whole life and in her free time she does photography and writing while also working at her Mom’s shop, Kelli and the Girls Design Studio, Factory Connection, and Dollar General. When asked what her favorite memory was she stated, “My favorite memory was the entirety of junior year, it felt like a dream and flew by so fast. I would also say in 7th grade when my knee popped at the football game and Rylee Johnson started crying with me, she wasn’t in pain but I knew who was my best friend that day and forward!”

When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
