Cabinets by Trivonna Evolves into Maple + Marble

It’s the same team with an expanded vision. With careful strategic planning, Cabinets by Trivonna owners Amber and Rick Bevacqua have expanded their business to offer their current and future customers more comprehensive services. To reflect this evolution, the new name is Maple + Marble.

“We have a contracting license to be more helpful with project management,” explains Amber. Along with cabinets, Maple + Marble offers flooring, tiles, sinks, cabinet lighting, and interior finish supplies. Over the years, they have developed relationships with many tradespeople in the area and will continue to utilize those services as needed.

Maple + Marble has built its reputation on its exceptional customer service. “We spend a lot of time with our clients,” adds Amber. “We want people to be confident with their decisions.”

To that end, time is spent educating clients about the construction and quality of cabinets. “Not all cabinets are created equal,” she notes. Two family-owned, Washington businesses supply the cabinets. They are Bellmont from Sumner and DeWils from Vancouver. “The products we offer align with our values, including being sustainable and clean."

With over 300+ doors, there are thousands of combinations. Don’t worry. “We don’t say, ‘Go pick.’ We will help you narrow the choices,” assures Amber. Time is taken so the needs and lifestyles of the clients are understood. “Functionality is huge,” she adds. You may want a topnotch cooking space or one for entertaining or both. Amber and Rick are good at solving problems and figuring out the puzzle that is your new or remodeled kitchen, bathroom, or entire home. It’s all about your dreams, wishes, and plans.

Maple + Marble offers flooring from Hallmark Floors. You can pick countertops in natural stone or with various solid surfaces. There are also tiles and designs for your backsplash. Efforts have been made to offer unique choices not available in other local businesses.

Stop by the Lacey showroom for inspiration and set up a time to meet with the engaging team at Maple + Marble. “It’s a lot of fun. We are with you,” says Amber. “It’s a design for your forever home, so you won’t have to re-do it later.”

Show Your School Pride with Oly Fed

This fall when school kicks off around our region, students, staff, families and alumni will have a new way to wear their school pride through OlyFed’s new affinity card program. An affinity card is a school-branded debit card where every time you use your card, OlyFed donates two cents to your school’s ASB fund or foundation.

“We like to say with every tap, you give back,” Ryan Betz, EVP/Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at OlyFed said. “This is a chance for our students and local school supporters to bank with pride and purpose and have a real impact when it comes to improving student opportunities.”

OlyFed will offer custom-designed bank cards featuring local high schools in Thurston and Mason counties. For college students, Saint Martin’s University and South Puget Sound Community College affinity cards will also be offered.

The affinity card program is the evolution of OlyFed’s Two-Cent Program. Launched almost seven years ago, Two Cents was designed to connect OlyFed’s customers with the bank’s charitable giving endeavors. With two cents from every transaction, OlyFed has donated over $200,000 to 65 various organizations.

“Our new School Affinity Card Program expands our Two-Cent Program to include our local schools because we believe education is so important to the future of our community and we want to help every student thrive,” Betz said.

The School Affinity Card Program joins a long list of community support from OlyFed. Over the past five years, OlyFed has invested more than $2 million in local community organizations and the bank’s employees volunteered more than 1,500 hours just last year. Couple those figures with its team members serving on the board of directors of more than 35 local nonprofits and providing financial education in dozens of classrooms at high schools across the region and you see a full picture of the importance OlyFed places on supporting the communities they serve.

According to Betz, “We’ve taught on topics from saving and investing, to budgeting, entrepreneurism, account security, and so much more.”

Flying Colors Painting Company is Driven by Service for Customers and Community

It is easy to spot the iconic red vans of Flying Colors Painting Company driving around town. Owners Dustin and Carol Wilson have been conscientiously serving our community since 1980. Dustin jokes that after 45 years in the painting business, he has become proficient.

The Wilsons emphasize the importance of relationships, both with customers and employees. Dustin especially enjoys residential projects when he has the opportunity to get to know his clients. Flying Colors believes that painting is a personal experience that can feel intrusive when contractors are inside your home. The company makes it a priority to respect people’s space, time and needs. Every customer gets the promise of professional painting, clear communication, and a simple process. “We deliver on that promise by honoring our warranty, responding promptly to questions and concerns, and ensuring every step of the project is handled with care and transparency,” says Office Manager Anna Jones. Return customers and referrals are truly important.

Flying Colors cultivates its employees’ professionalism, craftsmanship and critical thinking, which are core qualities of a skilled painter and transferable to other work. Opportunities to advance are provided and encouraged. “We’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with exceptional employees who take pride in their craft,” notes Dustin.

The Wilsons extend their impact into the community. Dustin is a Lacey Rotarian involved with the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Program. The club is associated with the Rotary Club of Gachie, located near Nairobi City in Kenya. WASH supports infrastructure such as water filters, rainwater harvesting systems, and handwashing stations to improve hygiene, health, and empower the community. This has

been especially impactful for women and, consequently, the reduction of infant mortality.

The couple is active in their church. They have also worked with local groups including the Boys and Girls Club, the Olympia Free Clinic, the Olympia Union Gospel Mission Free Dental Clinic, the Lion’s Low Vision Resource Center and others.

“I’m supposed to retire because everyone retires at my age, but I enjoy the business and our customers. We really have great people,” says Dustin. Visit their website and chedule a free estimate today.

Complete Hearing & Balance: A Personalized Approach

According to Dr. Alison Vega, owner of Complete Hearing & Balance in the Olympia, “Hearing loss can’t be seen, so many healthcare people glance over it and say ‘Oh, you seem just fine’.” But Dr. Vega and her team of audiologists and specialized care providers at their three locations understand this is when they really need to listen to the patient and jump into action.

“At Complete Hearing & Balance, we are patient-centered. We probe the issues, provide a thorough diagnosis, and then create an individual treatment plan specific to that person’s needs,” said Dr. Vega. As their name implies, Complete Hearing & Balance is more than a hearing aid supplier. They evaluate and treat the entire ear and provide an array of options to solve the specific issue.

Complete Hearing & Balance also treats balance issues which are usually a condition of the inner ear. “All audiologists

are taught about the inner ear during their education, but few do it outside of hospitals,” Dr. Vega said. “Many people get dizzy and they don’t know why. I can tell them why and give them viable options to fix or at least reduce their impact.”

Complete Hearing & Balance was founded on Dr. Vega’s belief that providing entire hearing improvement options went beyond just hearing aids. At offices in Olympia, Lacey and Chehalis, Dr. Vega’s teams provide surgical treatment options such as cochlear implants and related hearing procedures. “Hearing aids are great for hearing loss, but there are a lot of other options available and, after a proper diagnosis, I help patients make an educated decision on their best treatment plan,” said Dr. Vega.

Continuing education is a large part of Dr. Vega’s business philosophy. Whether it is staying current on the latest technology and treatments or mentoring current staff through continuing education programs to further their knowledge of audiology, Dr. Vega understands the importance of developing your team.

Complete Hearing & Balance is the expert in the area and they evaluate and treat hearing, balance and tinnitus. In Dr. Vega’s opinion, “There is almost ALWAYS something that can be done.”

South Puget Sound Community College Named a “Finalist with Distinction” for the Aspen Prize

South Puget Sound Community College has been named a “Finalist with Distinction” for the prestigious Aspen Prize, essentially second place to the winner, and awarded a $100,000 cash prize. The announcement was made in April at the Aspen Prize Ceremony in Washington D.C. This is the second time in a row South Puget Sound Community College was nominated for the prize that recognizes exemplary schools in six essential areas:

 Teaching and learning

 Certificate and degree completion

 Transfer and bachelor’s attainment

 Workforce success

 Broad access to the college and its offerings

 Closing equity gaps that may have arisen from low-income backgrounds backgrounds or challenges of first-generation students attending college

The Aspen Institute analyzes data from over 1,000 public community colleges nationwide to identify 150 colleges with the strongest outcomes. Eligible colleges submit detailed applications documenting successes. Then, 20-25

semifinalists are chosen for further evaluation. When the field narrowed to 10 finalists, teams conducted multi-day visits for firsthand observations.

“It is a rigorous process. We are always in the continuous process of improving,” says Kelly Green, Vice President of Advancement for SPSCC. “The school is especially proud of guided pathways,” she explains. Community colleges do not have majors like a four-year university. Guided pathways build a student’s class schedule with a longer-term goal in mind to make transfers to another school or program as seamless as possible.

“We also have faculty who have a wonderful relationship with data,” reports Green. Time and attention are spent to understand which students are succeeding and which ones are struggling. “We use this information.” For example, when a required math class is put off until the end, it tends to be put off indefinitely. Too often

graduation never happens. Now students are helped with a plan to get key requirements in the first quarters.

“The effective practices and models of excellence uncovered during the Prize process are shared with the field through open-access assessment tools and publications, conference presentations and professional development programs,” according to the Aspen Institute. All colleges can use the information for free.

Our South Sound region benefits from a strong, vibrant college. SPSCC offers training opportunities and certificates that set people onto successful careers. Some students are full-time, and others work in school around the demands of jobs and families. SPSCC is also a resource for community members to explore interests.

Altitude 15: A Food Hall for Community Connections and Opportunity and Amazing Eats

Downtown Olympia eagerly anticipates the opening of Altitude 15, a Food Hall with restaurants and cooperative spaces for startup street food vendors. Cher and Mike Hobbick purchased the building on the corner of State and Franklin Streets, formerly the Providence Community Care Center. The extensive remodel will be home to the Atlas Restaurant and Bar, the DoubleTap Tap House, and culinary entrepreneurs. Diners will enjoy plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating, including heated picnic tables and a children’s play area.

The Hobbicks envisioned a vibrant community space where family and friends would find excellent food in an atmosphere that fostered creative, young businesses. When the couple sold their business, they turned their energies, time, and finances to this remarkable project.

“We broke ground last summer and have been working with local contractors. We make progress every day. We want this community hub to go,” explains Cher. The environment is designed to bring chefs and their fledgling businesses along the path to success by lowering the financial strain. The large kitchen in the back allows multiple businesses to individually store and cook their own ingredients. “Altitude 15 is going to nurture culinary dreams into realities,” says Cher. Her ongoing business, Bite Me Catering, will have a permanent home within the building.

Cher ignited her curiosity through the Culinary Arts program at South Puget Sound Community College and graduated from the two-year program. Bite Me Catering celebrated its third year in March. It started as a fun thing to do. “One thing leads to another. It’s been fantastic,” she says.

The complexities of catering invigorate Cher. “The goal of catering is making your guests feel special and valued. There’s a sweet spot for great food and service.” People who have already appreciated the catered food of Bite Me will get to order it at Altitude 15.

Thank you, Cher and Mike Hobbick, for investing in our community. “When you support downtown Olympia, you support your neighbors. Often when you are in a store, you can meet the owner,” she notes. Downtown is home to an array of locally owned businesses. Watch social media (@altitude15oly)for the opening this summer.

Crockett’s Good Food for Good People

When you use the highest-quality, locally-sourced ingredients, people tend to notice. Like one diner from Auburn wrote in her restaurant review of Crockett’s Public House:

“We love the deep-fried fish and calamari. The calamari dipping sauce is crave-worthy and I can't help but dip everything in it. I haven't had anything on the menu that didn't taste absolutely fantastic.”

With over 35 years in the restaurant business, the owner of Crockett’s Public House and five other South Sound restaurants, Shaun Brobak, was asked what’s the most compelling thing he’s learned in the restaurant industry.

Brobak’s answer came to him quickly, “People’s lives have gotten busier and dining out isn’t something they do as a special occasion. It is an everyday part of their lives.” Hence the addition of trivia in Bonney Lake on Thursdays starting at 6pm and the importance of takeout for busy family lives.

This award-winning restaurant, which has been featured on national food channels, has some menu items that likely will never change. For example, their much-loved Eggs Benedict has always been featured on their incredibly popular weekend-only breakfast menu.

Other intensely popular items include their top-selling Fried Zucchini, Sloppy Joes or Grilled Artichokes featured by Guy Fieri in 2011 on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Maybe your favorite is their authentic Green Chili Burger or their rich and delicious Lobster Mac & Cheese.

For a weeknight dinner, special occasion, or just to satisfy your appetite, visit Crockett’s Public House in Puyallup’s historic downtown or in Bonney Lake.

GIG HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL: Washington State’s Destination Film Festival

Since 2007, film lovers from around the world have discovered what so many locals know. Gig Harbor is a beautiful place to visit and also host to a film festival known as a ‘Filmmaker’s Film Festival’. The 2025 Gig Harbor Film Festival will be held September 25-28 with all screenings occurring at the state-of-the-art Galaxy Theatres in Uptown Gig Harbor.

Headlining the 2025 lineup will be Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion, presented at the opening night celebration to include a Q&A session with Bob Mackie. The film celebrates his six-decade career of famously creating costume designs for Cher, Diana Ross, Elton John and many more entertainers. Known for his elaborate, sequined gowns, Mackie, now 86, was the in-house costume designer for The Carol Burnett Show where he produced more than 70 looks per week for Burnett and her guests.

“We are beyond thrilled to host the iconic Bob Mackie and his team on Opening Night!” said Pamela Holt, Executive Director of the Gig Harbor Film Festival.

In the following three days of lively parties, screenings and interactions with filmmakers, attendees can view up to 85 films organized in blocks. A block may include a feature-

length film or a collection of up to eight short films grouped by a common theme in a variety of genres. Each block is presented twice to allow film aficionados the oppotunity to see as many films as possible.

“This event is very convenient and relaxing because it all takes place in one location,” said Holt. Uptown Gig Harbor offers what many other film festivals cannot with the theatre and excellent restaurants nearby to host parties, plus free parking, all within one property.

The local vibe of the 2025 festival will be elevated with the screening of Gunslingers, co-starring Gig Harbor resident Jeremy Kent Jackson. Owner of Actorcraft p2s, an acting school founded by professional actors and educators in Gig Harbor, Jackson plays the villain in this 2025 movie opposite Oscar-winning actor Nicholas Cage, Heather Graham and Stephen Dorff also featured.

The Gig Harbor Film Festival is your opportunity to see why FilmFreeway ranks this beloved event as one of the Top 100 Best Reviewed Festivals in the WORLD.
