seniors and holiday celebrations: 6 tips for a joyful season p 51

As the holiday season approaches, food becomes a center of the season connecting us and filling our gatherings with comfort and joy, and we are here to embrace it. As we scouted out this issue, we also noted that there are so many fun events, activities and festivities that our plates can become rather full, pun intended.
So we are dishing up the good stuff. We highlight fun activities to do with your family and loved ones and, of course, we give you the good things happening in our community.
This issue celebrates philanthropic leaders in our community who are being of service to others. Also, our writers cooked up our annual holiday gift guide with our favorite sizzling gifts for the holidays.
The holidays are a time for engagements, and in this magazine we outline tips and suggestions for the newly engaged. Speaking of family, we also spotlight ideas for seniors in our Home and Design section.
As always, we encourage you to seek those in need and give generously this holiday season. We hope that you savor the flavor of this issue and find inspiration in these pages.
Thankfully,

The Hands On Children’s Museum hosted Olympia’s signature sunset garden party, the Summer Splash! Gala. Beneath twinkle lights in the Museum’s enchanting outdoor space, guests came together to celebrate and sustain more than 30 Access Programs—ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn through play.
Sponsored by Olympia Federal Savings, the Gala sparkled with signature cocktails, charcuterie, a champagne toast, family-style dinner, and scrumptious desserts.
The Gala marked a milestone as the Museum’s most successful fundraiser ever, with 100% of proceeds supporting discounted admissions, access memberships for low-income families, Title 1 school field trips, and more. More than 400 guests toasted to the kick-off of the Museum’s Capital Campaign for Expansion.

Supporters gathered at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium for Wild Greens, The Zoo Society’s annual Long Table Dinner & Auction. The golf-themed celebration kicked off with a lively cocktail hour on the main lawn featuring animal encounters, mini golf, a Happy Gilmore-inspired trick shot, and mouthwatering bites from local chefs. Guests then moved to the plaza for a four-course dining experience crafted by three culinary masters, all set against sweeping views of the zoo, Mt. Rainier, and a glowing sunset.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, The Zoo Society raised more than $132,000 to expand its field trip scholarship program with the goal of serving every school district in Pierce County. As one middle school student shared after their field trip visit: “Thank you for giving us this chance. I’ve never been to a zoo before.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County (BGCTC) has been supporting youth for nearly 25 years. Realizing the State Capital was without this vital organization, Steve Boone believed in getting one off the ground. Along with other community leaders, Boone was instrumental in fundraising efforts which generated the energy to open the first club. It was a humble beginning in the bus drivers’ lounge and bus barn, which was offered by the Tumwater School District.
The spaces were transformed into classrooms and a gym, and in the fall of 2001, 20 children gathered. Locations have expanded to include Olympia, Lacey, Rochester, Tenino and Yelm. The Boys & Girls Club is a premiere youth-service organization that runs out-of-school hours offering programs to inspire service leadership, giving academic enrichment and teaching healthy lifestyle activities. Now nearly 1900 youth from grades K-12 are served annually.
The entire Boone family, including his wife Michele and daughters, Ame Kiefer and Jen Foley, have made community engagement an important part of their adult lives. They are volunteers, board members, and financial donors. Steve sets an example and inspires others to act.
Boone’s father made a career in the automotive business, and eventually purchased the Ford dealership in Olympia. Steve had owned cars throughout his youth, but he began his adult career banking. When the salespeople in Olympia went on strike, his father called asking Steve to come down from Seattle and help him. Newly married, the young Boones moved to Olympia and Steve started selling cars. “I like talking to people,” says Steve. He stayed and his life trajectory shifted. Steve purchased the dealership from his father in 1980. Now retired from that business, Steve continues to enjoy cars with his impressive classic car collection. He has been a long-time board member for the Lemay–Americas Car Museum and BGCTC.

BGCTC welcomes your support. Contributions of materials, goods and services, such as computers, tablets, commercial grade recreation equipment, furniture, art supplies, tickets to childfriendly events, and school supplies are helpful. Pro-bono services can also help stretch the budget. Please talk to the organization prior to donating and consider becoming a volunteer.
Thank you, Steve Boone! v

The holidays are nearly upon us, and for many families, that means one thing: a family road trip. While every holiday trip may not be over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house, every successful family road trip has a plan. Like a well-planned holiday road trip, planning for your children’s higher education is, at its core, a journey that requires financial planning, dedication, and long-term commitment.
Every memorable road trip begins with a vision, giving everyone something to look forward to. Similarly, saving for higher education begins with a dream. Students and their parents picture a future shaped by college degrees, technical or vocational training, or apprenticeship
opportunities. Taking the step to save in a 529 plan supports different paths your student may choose and builds hope that they can pursue their dreams after high school.
A road trip route includes planning desired sights, rest stops, meals, and overnight stays that balance family fun with trip finances. When beginning their educational savings journey, families consider how much to set aside for their children’s dreams, what type of 529 plan to use, and how to balance education savings with other financial goals.
Smart road-trippers pack strategically for their families. The same is true when hitting “Route
529.” Knowing the best financial tools is essential. From tax-advantaged 529 savings accounts to automatic payments and flexible spending options, families benefit from “packing” the right resources early on.
Even well-planned road trips run into delays—traffic jams, closed attractions, road detours, or weather issues. A family’s savings journey is the same. Life may throw curve balls—job changes, medical expenses, or unexpected downturns. Staying committed to saving, even small contributions, helps families move closer to their goals. Every dollar saved is a dollar you won’t have to borrow later.
Beyond the sights seen and photos taken, the road trip’s real value lies in the bonding moments. Saving for higher education dreams is also a family affair. This holiday season, encourage your family to gift contributions to your children’s 529 savings plan.
Family road trips are measured in miles covered and memories made. Education savings are measured in time and dollars. Both represent powerful investments in family time and opportunities that lie ahead. v

Named after a treasured family nickname meaning “my moon,” Mi Luna Cuban Cafe blends rich heritage with joyful hospitality in the heart of Olympia.
Established by the family trio of Rich and Kirsten Root, and their son Josiah, the café is a reflection of their shared vision: a warm welcoming space inspired by Cuba’s rustic elegance and European charm--just like its dishes--thoughtfully layered, deeply rooted in tradition, and crafted with love.
The cuisine, while centered on Cuban classics also draws culinary influences from Spanish and Caribbean flavors with shared ingredients like beans, rice, herbs, and slow-cooked meats—all under the direction of executive chef Miriam Preston.
Stop by for a casual lunch or a full-service dinner and Cuban favorites like Ropa Vieja (known as the national dish) featuring tender shredded steak in flavorful tomato and white wine sauce, peppers, garlic, capers, olives, accompanied by rice, and beans.
At Mi Luna, family isn’t just in the kitchen—it’s in the food, the walls, the stories, and the service.

Co-owner Rich Root, formerly in real estate and now following his passion for cooking alongside the kitchen crew, describes it as a business culture built on joyful hospitality, a growth mindset, genuine care, collaboration, and a deep sense of community.
“We want every person to feel like they have a community here. That they love coming to work, and see the contribution and gift they're offering to every person that comes in here. That’s our heart as far as the culture of the business,” he says. “You can feel it as soon as you come in. You can feel that everyone shares that heart, everybody's on the same team.
Honestly, that means the world, because that's what it's all about.”
Plans are already underway for special community nights—art classes, dance events, and chef collaborations.

According to Heather Spaite, a repeat customer of Kathy Kleber and her Team RED approach, “I knew I should call Kathy, she comes with her ‘Rolodex’.”
Mrs. Spaite had just lost her husband, Steve, and she needed advice. “I was overwhelmed and not sure where to go or what to do.”
A couple years ago, Kathy and Team RED helped to prepare, market and sell her mother-in-law’s home and Heather knew firsthand how their approach worked. “Back then her team was so helpful with all of the stuff and the idiosyncrasies of that home, and my first thought was I need Kathy’s advice on what to do with my home in Graham, especially how much to invest in it,” said Spaite.
Steve had started a lot of projects including the removal of 22 trees. His sudden death created a void in her

life, but also many unfinished projects. Kathy stepped in and provided valuable insight and vendors to help finish the projects, including the landscaping disrupted by the removal of the trees. “Kathy and her team are wonderful because whatever you need, Kathy has a contact for. You need landscaping done, she knows someone. You need your house packed up, she has a contact. If you just need the house to be inspected, she has a contact for that. She comes with a Rolodex making her a single stop service,” said Spaite. She added, “Kathy is levelheaded and calm… she is always calm.”
That calmness was put to the test when on the day of closing, the house was broken into, and the refrigerator was stolen. Kathy jumped into action and had repairs to the break-in damage completed and a replacement fridge installed before closing.
“We were happy to provide our fullservice concierge level assistance and were proud to be standing beside Heather at this difficult time in her life,” Kathy Kleber said recently.
Kathy and her team offer a complimentary consultation to help clients create a plan based on their fullservice project management real estate approach.

While a survey found that 92% of homeowners aged 60 to 75 want to stay in their homes as they age, only 10% are equipped with the accessibility features needed for older adults with limited mobility. According to Mark Barton, President and Production Manager at Dickey’s Remodel & Repair in Olympia, “We sort of stumbled into Aging in Place by accident when a client was brought to tears by a simple bathroom remodel that changed her life. She could now roll under a vanity mirror that was set at the right height.”

bring their exceptional craftsmanship to seniors in Thurston County. With about 70% of their business coming from remodels and another 30% from repairs, Dickey’s tackles projects as small as installing grab bars to as large as the construction of a 1,000-ft Accessory Dwelling Unit.
sinks and installing accessible bathing products can extend a person’s time in their home. These adjustments can be made throughout the home with the help of Dickey’s team of trustworthy, honest and experienced carpenters.
“We have a fixed price business model, so customers know what their price will be upfront, and we provide a threeyear warranty on our work. I’m not sure anyone in this area stands behind their work like we do,” said Barton.
The team of carpenters at Dickey’s Remodeling & Repair are easy to work with and have the training to do the job correctly the first time. According to Barton, “At the end of the day, it really is all about your people.” Dickey’s takes pride in hiring the best people and continuing their training throughout their tenure.
Dickey’s isn’t just a remodeling company; they are a dedicated partner in shaping your environment—be it home or business—to better align with your needs, lifestyle, and aspirations. As we've noticed the continued focus on hyperpersonalization, especially among a generation that cares about authenticity. Here is our list of the hottest trends.
Surprise weddings are big this year, outfit changes midreception, nostalgic late-night snacks. The year of surprises can also include leaning into dramatic changes between the ceremony and reception, like cutting off the bottom of your dress.
For bridal fashion, think castle-inspired silhouettes such as corsets and basque waists, luxurious fabrics, jewel tones and Gothic-inspired jewels. For stationery, ornate fonts and textural papers, and for event styling, tons of candlelight, velvet seating and chandeliers.
Couples are looking to brand their wedding with a full suite of branded wedding items. We're seeing couple’s monograms, crests and surnames on everything from stationery and signage to wedding welcome bags and boxes, matchbooks, fans and cocktail napkins, and even late-night food items weaving an extra level of personalization into the day.
So you've recently received a mood board for a white-tie wedding with a hyper-specific aesthetic dress code. You aren't alone. Guests have become part of the wedding decor and an enhancement to wedding day photography through their attire choices for the day. On invitations and wedding websites, couples are requesting guests lean into certain colors and themes to supplement their overall aesthetic vision.
Sporty-chic themes with green palettes, court motifs, and playful preppy details. The growing appeal of tennis-themed events stems from a mix of aesthetic and emotional elements. Green has long been a staple in wedding design—it’s timeless, fresh, and pairs beautifully with both classic and contemporary palettes, so weaving in tennis-inspired details feels like a natural extension.
And yes, Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s engagement is already influencing trends like antique-style rings and whimsical florals.

When the Tacoma Tuladhara Yoga Studio lost the lease on their space in the Proctor District late last year, owner Alicia Barrett did what all great entrepreneurs do. She figured it out. First a temporary location in the Stadium District met her needs and then she found a perfect location on the corner of Sixth & Union.
“It is a premium location in a newly remodeled building across from a Farrelli’s Pizza and just down the street from UPS,” said Barrett. “With a planned parking lot on its way, I knew it was a great location for us.”
With a quiet opening scheduled for September 20th, the newly constructed yoga studio features gorgeous natural light, a massage room, two bathrooms, and a locker room area—all designed to create a premium and welcoming environment. A celebratory grand opening will follow with an open house, special classes and events at a date to be announced in October.
Tuladhara takes pride in creating a sense of community by helping people connect and come together in their beautiful, inviting studios. According to Barrett, “We have a diverse community, so we offer a diverse range of classes for those new to yoga or more rigorous classes like Pilates Fusion. We have strength building versus relaxing classes that create a huge range taught by some of the most experienced teachers in the area.”
There are three Tuladhara Yoga Studios in the area including one in Gig Harbor and their original studio on Lakewood Drive. “Having multiple locations and a successful therapy practice is only possible because I work with a very talented leadership team,” Barrett said. The studios also offer on-line yoga classes.
Facilitating longevity and aging well is a core value of the Tuladhara team. This is extended with their Yoga Teacher Trainings where they educate and train more people in the art of yoga. The training course is more than just the education needed to become a yoga instructor, but also for people wanting to understand the benefits of yoga better and massage therapists that are interested in bridging the two elements together.

The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and togetherness, but it can also be a challenging period for many older adults. For seniors, the holidays might bring feelings of loneliness, especially if they have lost loved ones or are unable to participate in traditions as they once did.
Here are six thoughtful ways to include seniors in Christmas and other holiday festivities:
1. CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STORYTELLING
Set aside a specific time during your holiday gatherings to listen to their stories. This could be after dinner when everyone is relaxed and gathered round, or during a more structured activity like a “Family History Night.” You might even record these stories to preserve them for future generations.
2. PLAN INCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES
Engage in holiday-themed crafts or baking projects that are simple yet enjoyable. For example, decorating cookies, making ornaments, or creating holiday cards are activities that allow for creativity without being physically demanding. These activities allow for conversation and connection.
If the weather permits and mobility allows, taking a short walk to see holiday lights or decorations in the neighborhood can be a lovely way to enjoy the season together. Even a drive to view lights from the car can be a shared experience that brings joy.
3. USE TECHNOLOGY FOR CONNECTION
Technology can be a powerful tool to
help seniors stay connected during the holidays, especially when physical presence isn’t possible. While some older adults may be unfamiliar with the latest gadgets, with a little patience and guidance, they can use these tools to stay close to family and friends. Set up a shared family photo album or video library where everyone can contribute pictures and videos.
4.

Make sure that the environment is comfortable and accessible. This includes providing seating that supports their physical needs, ensuring that the space is well-heated (or cooled, depending on your location), and keeping noise levels at a manageable volume. Designate a quiet space where they can retreat if they need a break from the festivities.
5.
Encourage seniors to create homemade gifts for family and friends. This could involve baking holiday treats, crafting
ornaments, or knitting scarves and blankets. These handmade gifts carry a personal touch that can be more meaningful than store-bought items.
Carve out time alone with the seniors in your life. This could be something as simple as having a quiet conversation over a cup of tea, going for a walk together, or sitting down to share a meal. These moments of connection allow you to deepen your relationship and give them the opportunity to share their thoughts, feelings, and stories. v From seniorlifestyles.com
