The preexisting Grotto was built in the early 1900s, but over the years maintenance of the Grotto has become more difficult. The overgrowth of weeds and the lack of accessibility to the prayer area due to the frequent occurrence of water making the space muddy when wet, made the prayerful grounds not as safe to move around on.

Nau gucke mir fer en Harebscht Fescht vun gude Frucht.” ***
“Eeli” preached at many revival services. They went on for six to eight weeks every evening, sometimes until
step great grandchildren.
11 o’clock. The meeting was not concluded as long as someone was still at the altar. It was the belief doing so would interfere with the Holy Spirit. When the meetings were over, the bishop, the ministers and the elders would visit the new born to help them begin a Christian home. When there were funerals, the bishop and three or four ministers had to assist in the preaching.
The biggest time of all was the Love Feast. The Saturday meeting was to prepare the people for the Holy Communion on Sunday. Through this feast, the people came closer to God and they thanked God for all he had done for them. Then they came to the still water and praised God with old hymns. The bishop spoke appropriate words; then he and a helper took the candidate by the arm and lead him into the water. The candidates were baptized three times: in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Bishop Peter Gress once said to me that Grandfather once spent the night at his place. It got too late after a meeting to drive home from Reinholds. Thus, it was with our forefathers and their legacy to us. “Eeli preached, prayed and sang in German. But he was no “jumper” as many were in those days. Sometimes he’d raise his hands into the air as the Biblical characters have done. Whenever he spoke of lost souls, a tear came to his eye.
An example of the power of his preaching: a woman from the church of Rev. Wesley Martin of Akron, where he preached years ago, told me that he had preached on pride. She looked down and saw her fancy dress trimmed in lace. She went straight home and took off the lace.
The bishop loved good fun, but he hated off color stories. Solly Harting of Reamstown gave me an example. There was an auction and “Eeli” was there. It was the custom for the auctioneer to tell a few off color stories. Solly was not yet a Christian and he was wondering what would happen when these stories were told. Solly said that the bishop just stood there with his head bowed as if he were praying for the worldly folk. This encouraged Solly to lead a Christian life.

“Eeli” was greatly concerned about his family. He helped his sons on the farm and in business. My father was lame. “Eeli” said to him, “Rube, you must get an education.” So he sent Rube to Millersville State Normal School, now Millersville University. Rube’s first school was at Hahnstown. There were big boys in the school. One of them was his six foot brother, Jim. One morning they locked out the teacher. But Rube climbed onto the roof and placed a shingle upon the chimney. He smoked them out. They came out with weeping eyes and coughing for dear life.
When I think about Grandfather, I recall enough stories to last a month. He was not rich with worldly goods like the Rockefellers, the Woolworths and the Mellons. But I wouldn’t trade my inheritance for all their wealth. “Eeli” left behind a fortune that money cannot buy. I see his progeny: preachers, missionaries, church workers and good Christian people, all people that take after him. If he were still here, I could hear him say, “Adeline, we planted good seed. No we’re looking for the harvest festival with good fruit.” ***
This week, we conclude this two part series on the Hornberger clan, especially Bishop Elias F. Hornberger. The bishop’s life encompassed the second half of the 19th and the first quarter of the 20th centuries, a period of great and rapid change. We are indebted to his grandson, Dave Hornberger of Ephrata, for recording for us these anecdotes from the life of his grandfather.
In our earlier field work in Lancaster County, we had an opportunity to hear the late Bishop Peter Gress preach. We expect that by this date all the singers of the Dutch spirituals in his church have gone on to their eternal reward. What a blessing it was to hear them sing!
Now that we know that Rube Hornberger attended M.S.N.C., we’ll try to locate records of his studies

As a graduate of F&M, and for 23 years a member of the Millersville faculty, I am aware of the profound impact both schools have had on our community. However, sometimes we underestimate the significance of Millersville’s contribution.
Knowing that Dave is prepared to write about his grandfather “en ganzer Munet,” we hope that he will take a few minutes out from time to time and share additional experiences with us. Again we tip unser Deitscher Schtrohhut!!!

“Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies.
Cathal Stephen O’Mahony was born in 1866, and came to Ephrata in about 1920 from Brooklyn, New York. For sixteen years he lived in a room on the upper floor of the Mt. Vernon Inn on the southeast corner of the square.
Born in Ireland, O’Mahony attended the University of Dublin where he became involved in “hazardous patriotic activities that nearly cost him his life.” He was jailed by the English for aiding the Irish attempts to overthrow English rule, and following his release he immigrated to America. Following his naturalization he attended Columbia

In about 1908, prior to moving to Ephrata, he took up painting as a hobby. It should be noted that O’Mahony never had a painting lesson. His artwork, which most today would consider naïve or even folksy, provided him with a source of income to pay his medical expenses, and room and board. He painted pictures on paper, canvas and tin; and decorated everyday items such as lamp shades, wooden boxes, textiles, etc.
O’Mahony suffered from debilitating articular rheumatism and for the last years of his life he was confined to his room in the Mt. Vernon. While living in the Mt. Vernon it was reported that he had “decorated his hall room,

The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of Lititz, York Composite Squadron 301 of Thomasville, and Gettysburg Squadron 308 of Gettysburg, all came together to train in emergency services in order to practice search and rescue for downed aircraft and missing persons. The search and rescue exercise, also known as SAREX, included Civil Air Patrol support aircraft from Capital City Airport. Cadets and Senior Members from each of the squadrons worked together in teams to complete search and rescue tasks to locate and identify clues in a real life simulation of a downed
aircraft with a missing person that parachuted from an airplane prior to crashing. Teams had to traverse through natural terrain utilizing orienteering skills, implement search techniques, perform mission radio communication protocols, and extraction of the “missing person” utilizing what they have learned through their Civil Air Patrol training.
These Search and Rescue exercises are very important in the training of Cadets and Seniors to identify any areas that need improvement in order to effectively and efficiently perform mission objectives in the event that they are called to serve the community or nation during national emergencies, natural disasters, downed aircraft, or missing person searches.
This is just one of the many activities that Jesse Jones Squadron 304 performs to be prepared to serve their community. Service to their community, their state and their nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within the Civil Air Patrol.
This activity was primarily organized by the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 Commander Major Jerome Broad. Major Broad has many years of emergency service mission experience.
Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located, on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome.

The Friendly Circle held its November meeting on Tuesday, November 8, at Akron Church of the Brethren. President John Rice welcomed everyone. Gisele and Carl Werner greeted 75 members and three guests.
The theme song, “The More We Get Together” was sung followed by “The Pledge of Allegiance” and “God Bless America” with Sandy Heisey accompanying on the piano. They also sang, “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Over the Rainbow.”
Sandy Heisey played the Armed Forces Salute as the 13 veterans stood when their theme song was played and they were recognized for their service.
President John Rice introduced the slate of officers for 2023: President John Rice, Vice President Thomas Williams, Recording Secretary Libby Rupp, Assistant Recording Secretary Bonnie Fry, Treasurer Debbie Moyer, Corresponding Secretaries Grace and Jerry Gerhart, Membership Secretary Sandy Butzer, 1st Assistant Secretary Mary Ann O’Brien, 2nd Assistant Secretary Janet Baker, and Publicity Chair Almanara Buffenmyer. The new officers will be installed at
the December 2022 meeting.
John Rice gave the blessing before the meal. After the delicious meal prepared by the kitchen committee, they were entertained by Sandy Heisey. Sandy also played the piano during the meal, which was very nice to have dinner music. Sandy worked for the State for 33 years, lives in Mount Joy and now does her favorite thing entertaining at nursing facilities and other venues.
She played and sang songs that were familiar during World War I, World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War in honor of
Veterans Day. “Button Up Your Overcoat” from 1929, “My Country Tis of Thee,” which is to the tune of “God Save The Queen,” “Yankee Doodle,” “Battle of New Orleans,” “Johnny Comes Marching Home,” “Glory Glory Hallelujah,” “Ballad of the Green Beret” and ending with Perry Como’s “Bless This House.”
Pat Bunting led the singing of eight October Birthday’s.
Assistant Secretary Bonnie Fry read the minutes from October and Debbie Moyer gave the Treasurer’s report.
The Gerhart’s reported sending three get well cards
and asked members to notify them if they know of any members hospitalized or deceased.
President Rice reminded members about the upcoming trip to Hunterdon Hills on Tuesday, November 15. The trip committee has a trip planned for 2023 to “The Kenny Rogers Band” on Sunday, April 16, 2023 in Lebanon. Anyone interested in joining The Friendly Circle on this trip can contact Linda at 717 733 4414 for more information.
The meeting was adjourned with the singing of the “Doxology.”
Anyone interested in joining “The Friendly Circle,” please call Sandy at 717 733 9503.
The next board meeting will be held on, Wednesday, December 7 at 8:00 a.m. at Bright’s Restaurant in Ephrata. The regular club meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13 at the Akron Church of the Brethren, 613 Main Street, Akron.

Where do you run to for strength in times of difficulty? Some merely wallow in depression. Others resort to efforts in the flesh. Many simply turn to other people. The tragedy of
turning to any of these things or people is that their help or comfort is only marginal at best, and ignores what God has supplied to provide our needed stability.
David found the right answer. He wrote, “This is my comfort in my affliction: for Thy Word hath quickened me” (Psa. 119:50). In the midst of weakness, even when he felt extremely despondent, time spent in God’s Word brought him spiritual life, comfort, and the strength that he needed. The extent of the help he received is indicated by his testimony in verse 71: “It was good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.” Quite simply, he allowed God to
meet his need so adequately that his tragedy became a triumph by turning to the Scriptures.

personally find God’s Word to be the answer for all our needs, we are also to present the Scriptures to others as the answer to their needs as well. That’s what the Apostle Paul
meant when he instructed the Philippians to be always “holding forth [meaning to present or offer] the Word of life” (Phil. 2:16). Their ministry to the lost was to be enhanced by the most “blameless” (2:15) conduct possible, as they shared the gospel with others, and applied God’s Word to daily living. But their ministry was to be empowered by promoting the Scriptures (not arguments, logic, or platitudes) to the hearts of those with whom they sought to have a ministry. This was the pattern the Apostle Paul left them. He held forth the Word of Life to them; they believed it and were saved. Later his letter further equipped them for their
present needs in the midst of suffering. It was this practice of presenting God’s Word to others, regardless of the individual need, that made Paul’s ministry so effective. God’s Word has real power because it is a divine message from the Lord God Almighty Himself.
God’s Word is the answer for the need of every human soul. Whether the need is eternal life, answers to current problems, counsel about what to do, comfort in trial, or insight into future events, God’s Word is intended by the Lord to be our source of strength and power. Run to it, and encourage others to do so, rather than turning to any other source.

Alayna, the encouraging, competitive leader of the 8th grade class is the daughter of Darwin and Bonita Horst. Alayna is the third sibling of four in her family. Alayna’s family attends Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community Church, and she also attends that youth group, where she enjoys growing in her faith. She attends Hinkletown Mennonite School and is in 8th grade. Alayna likes playing her guitar, and she draws inspiration from her family and friends. Alayna has a dog and a cat and likes to eat pizza. Her favorite color is light blue. Alayna likes gym class, and her favorite pastime is sports; her favorite sports are volleyball and track.
Alayna is very involved in the Hinkletown girls volleyball team. In fact Alayna is the captain of the team. Alayna is a natural born volleyball player, and she was inspired to play volleyball by her older sister, Alexis, who played volleyball in high school and college. Alayna liked to watch her play, and because of that she now loves to play volleyball. Another reason Alayna likes to play volleyball is because it is a fun thing to do with her friends and family. Last year, she had an injured knee so she could not play volleyball, so now she is very glad to be able to play the sport she loves. She also likes to play because she is very competitive and because it is a fun sport to play.
One of her teammates says that “she dives for everything” and another says that she cheers others on and is a very encouraging person to play with.
Although Alayna does not know what she wants to do in the future, she will surely be used by God to do good things.
Jayce Martin is a Junior at Ephrata Mennonite School. He has been going to Ephrata Mennonite since he was in kindergarten. One thing Jayce really likes about school is the social interaction he gets everyday because he is an extrovert.
His extracurricular activities include playing on the basketball team and singing on the school’s Ministry Arts Team. He enjoys it because he likes playing on the basketball team because it’s competitive while also improving his skill and teamwork. The reason he sings on the school’s Ministry Arts Team is because Jayce enjoys singing and being able to hangout with his school friends while singing.
On the flipside of school life, he has an avid love for sports and follows teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. On the weekends, Jayce normally hangs out with friends, enjoys hanging out with his youth group and goes to church. When Jayce gets older, he might have an interest in doing missions to spread God’s word, however he is undecided at this point because he is not sure what God has planned for his life. His word to all would be to seek God’s will in your life.
