Evelyn I. “Evie” Kline Evelyn I. “Evie” Kline, 87, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, at UPMC Lititz.

She was born in Fredericksburg to the late Marvin and Irene (Miller) Shuey and was the wife of Curtis Kline, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage.

She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, Ephrata.

Evie expressed her love for others through her joy of baking and cooking, not only for her family, but often for others in need. She cherished time outdoors, nurturing her garden and spending time in the mountains.

In addition to her husband, Evie is survived by a daughter, Kelly, wife of Scott Weaver, two granddaughters, Court-

ney Weaver, Danika Weaver; two great-grandsons, Owen, Ethan; two sisters, Marilyn Ditzler and Louise Kreiser.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Christine Shuey, and a sister, Arlene Schaeffer.

James R. Charles, 79, Leola, passed away on Thursday, December 4.

He was the husband of the late Beverley R. Charles.

He is survived by three sons: James Charles Jr., hus­ band of Jacinta, Mountville; Jonathan Charles, husband of Christine, Lititz; and Joel

Biblical Message

“It’s required” Author: Wenger Scripture: Micah 6:8 ­ “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Last week, we considered the first imperative ­ “To do justly.” We saw both Old Testament and New Testa­ ment examples of the religious leaders and others who didn’t “do justly” as required in our study verse.

Paul was a good example of going above and beyond.

He was transparent and just.

One of the chief reasons that our relationships with others is to be fair, just and above reproof. Not just

because it is right; it is, but also that our testimony is authentic and believable.

Peter tells us that more than likely, we will be slandered.

And if so, our life should be clean and above reproach so that it proves the slander to be without merit and fallacious. 1st Peter 3:16 states, “and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who dis­ parage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.” Why will they be put to shame? Because their claims are false. David’s sin with Bathsheba gave the enemies of God a reason to blaspheme. Nathan the prophet declared, “How­ ever, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die” (2nd Samuel 12:14). So, in summary, we are to be just in our behavior because it’s right and also to verify our faith is authentic. This isn’t an option, it’s a requirement of the truly saved or born again person.

Moving on to the next requirement: to love mercy.

These requirements are actually all characteristics of our great God. He is good, He is just, He loves mercy and He wants a relationship with his creatures. God is all about mercy. In Exodus 34:6b we read, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abound­ ing in goodness and truth.”

In Psalm 103:8 & 10 we read, “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.” Ephesians 2:4­5 states, “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you were saved).” This is one characteristic that is reciprocal in nature. In the Beatitudes, Christ says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” So, we should

priest and the Levite both passed by on the other side. But the Samaritan had compassion on him. He dressed his wounds, put him on his donkey and took him to an inn where he cared for him. When the Samaritan had to continue his journey, he paid the innkeeper so his wounded acquaintance could stay and heal. Not only that, but he said he would return and pay any additional the innkeeper may spend.

Christ’s command, “Go and do likewise.” Surely this is mercy, but there is another form of mercy we need to demonstrate; and that is interpersonal skills.

Proverbs 19:11 says, “A person’s discretion makes him slow to anger. And it is his glory to overlook transgression.” We could end most arguments, resentments, and bitterness if we would just learn to overlook! Stop making a federal case out of every­ thing! We offend as much as we are offended. God chooses mercy and so should we.

Remember the unmerciful servant who after he was forgiven a large debt by the king, went out and found his fellow servant who owed him money and couldn’t pay; so he had him thrown into debtor’s prison.

The king’s response to his servant whom he forgave is pretty scary. It reads, “You wicked servant! I forgave you all your debt because you begged me. Should you not also had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?” (Matthew 18:32, 33).

His master was angry and delivered him to the torturers until he could pay all that was due to his master. If we are God’s children, we should bear His resemblance and be merciful.

The Good Samaritan is a clear illustration of mercy.

An unlucky fellow fell among thieves, was beaten, and left for dead. We are introduced to two rotten religious leaders and one merciful believer. The

East Cocalico Lions Hold Annual Toll Road Exploring, The day started a bit chilly.

Then the clouds began to hide the sun, and the wind picked up dropping the temperature a few degrees, but no matter what the weather was, the East Cocalico Lions Club held their annual Toll Road Collection which benefits four local organizations on “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving.

The Lions Club members asked for a small toll or donation from all cars, trucks, motorcycles, and buggies that passed through the square in Reamstown.

What they got, thanks to the generosity of the community and all drivers, were coins, bills, and even checks totaling over $5,000.

One hundred percent of what was collected, along with a donation from the

Lions Club, will be divided and distributed evenly be­ tween the Reamstown Mem­ orial Park, Ephrata Area Social Services, Hospice and Community Care and the Breast Cancer Coalition at a future club meeting.

Join the Lititz Historical Foundation and members of the public at the Lititz Public Library on Saturday, January 17 at 1:30 p.m. for a very special program.

The guest speaker will be Darlene Colon, who will discuss the Christiana Re­ sistance.

The Christiana Resistance (also known as The Chris­ tiana Riot) was the successful armed resistance by escaped slaves and free blacks to a raid led by a federal marshal to recover four escaped slaves on September 11, 1851 at the home of William Parker in Christiana, Penn­ sylvania.

The year 2026 marks the 175th anniversary of this event.

Colon is a Lancaster County historian, local author, serves as President of the Christiana Area His­ torical Society, and is an authority on the life of Lydia Hamilton Smith.

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you wrote about reducing cholesterol levels with the help of statins along with a PCSK9i, such as Repatha or Praluent. My question is: Are these PCSK9is at all beneficial if one cannot take statins? -D.C.S. ANSWER: Yes, PCSK9 inhibitors are very effective at lowering cholesterol and

reducing the risk of heart attacks in high-risk people.

Because these drugs are given by injection and are quite expensive, they are not usually the first-line treat­ ments. We have decades of experience using statins, so they remain the first choice for most.

However, if a person cannot take a statin, or one of the alternatives such as bempedoic acid, then PCSK9i drugs are a very reasonable choice. In people with familial high cholesterol and extraordinarily high levels of cholesterol, comb­ ination therapy with two or three drugs (a statin, a PCSK9i and sometimes ezetimibe) is frequently used. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife had COVID and has lost most of her smell and taste. This has lasted for two years. She is in her late 70s.

Strong flavors like barbecue sauce and onions can be detected. Is there any hope that her condition will improve? -- P.M. ANSWER: Most people recover their loss of smell after COVID. Having had this for two years is a bad sign; however, the fact that she does have some sense of smell is a good sign.

ment for the loss of smell after a viral infection is olfactory training. The same scents that were used in clinical trials can be purchased online. Recent evidence has shown that a supplement combination, ultramicronized palmitoy­ lethanolamide and luteolin, along with olfactory training, led to greater improvement.

The dose used in studies was 770 mg. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult daughter (62) was diagnosed about three years ago with a skin disorder called prurigo nodularis. Her dermatologist has tried three different injections, but they’re not working. She still gets very itchy break­ outs. Please give me your thoughts and more infor­ mation about this. -- K.M.A. ANSWER: Prurigo nodu­ laris is an uncommon disease that affects about one person per 1,000. I have seen a handful of cases, and fortunately the cases I’ve seen have responded well to potent steroid creams.

Regular use of skin lotions, avoiding scratching especi­ ally at night (I recommend cotton gloves), and some­ times antihistamines like Benadryl are also the firstline therapies.

If a patient needs more effective treatment and only has a limited area of itching, then a dermatologist will often inject the area with a high-potency steroid. Since it sounds like this hasn’t been successful for your daughter, there are other options.

One is a topical cream called ruxolitinib. About 45% of people responded to this treatment, compared to 20% who responded to a cream without an active drug.

Ultraviolet light (narrow­ band ultraviolet B) showed about 80% effective­ ness.

For people in whom none of these therapies work, a very expensive injection

Since many people with prurigo nodularis have other skin diseases, and some may have (or develop) depression or obsessive skin­picking, these conditions may also need to be treated to successfully improve symp­ toms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and immediately changed my diet and exercise regimen. I was able to lose 17 pounds in about two months but have started to experience a feeling of something being stuck in my throat. Could the sudden weight loss have brought this on? I was sent to get an ultrasound on my thyroid, and it came back negative. ­­ V.J. ANSWER: A sensation of something stuck in the throat is common in clinical practice and can have many causes. It is referred to as a “globus” sensation. An ultra­ sound is a very reasonable

test as a large thyroid mass (goiter) can cause a mechanical effect on the esophagus, which then leads to this sensation. Similarly, abnormalities in the esoph­ agus, oropharynx and larynx may also lead to this sensation. Most experts recommend an evaluation with an endoscopy and a laryngoscopy for people with a persistent globus sensation.

Unintentional weight loss is a red flag in people with a globus sensation because if the cause behind the globus sensation is also leading people to lose weight, this means that it is more likely to be something serious. But this is not the case with you, so I can’t think of how losing weight could have been the cause behind your globus sensation.

If the sensation of some­ thing in your throat con­ tinues, I recommend further evaluation by an ENT physician.

Civil Air Patrol Cadets Earn Promotions And Awards Members of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, received their promotions and awards at their Monday, November 24, meeting.

Cadet Senior Airman Rowan Bacci, of Morgan­ town, earned Cadet of the Month for October. He also earned a promotion to Cadet Staff Sergeant and received the Wright Brothers Award. Cadet Airman First Class Gabe Catherman, of Windsor; Nathan Williams, of Mt. Joy; and Theodore Seifferlein, of Landisville, were promoted to Cadet Senior Airman and received the Mary Feik Award.

Cadet Staff Sergeant Sara Dalrymple, of Oxford, earned a promotion to Cadet Technical Sergeant and received the Rickenbacker Award. Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Bruce Gentry, of Denver, was promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenant and earned the Mitchell Award.

The Mitchell Award is a major milestone in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program.

It recognizes proficiency in leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness,

and character development, and is the transition into the rank of cadet officer.

The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron meets each Mon­ day (except holidays) at

7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located, on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome.

On Thursday, December 18, the Mountaineers’ Table at Ephrata Church of the Brethren (ECOB) held its annual holiday distribution for the 125 families enrolled in the weekly program. A generous donor sponsored a holiday ham for all of the families and the ECOB

congregation provided gifts for all 267 children in the program!

Every week, the Mountain­ eers’ Table provides qualified families living within the Ephrata Area School District with extra food for the week.

Also provided are tips and recipes, and information on

Toys For Tots Bike Collection Becomes A Community Blessing

What started as a simple act of kindness to benefit children in the Toys for Tots program has grown every year since Eric Bair of the Sports Barber in Ephrata took the initiative to make

a difference. The very first year saw seven bikes collected, then last year an amazing 450 were donated.

This year’s final total of donated bikes came to 1,107.

A total of four tractor-trailers

were needed to transport the collection, which will surely be appreciated by the children receiving them.

Eric is retiring in the coming year, so this is his last event.

He is grateful to everyone

who made this project an overwhelming success.

Kailey Nolt is an eighthgrade student at Gehmans Mennonite School, and is dramatic, outgoing, and loves to talk. She is from a family of 7 and is the 3rd oldest in her family, and her parents are Jared and Angie Nolt.

She is a member at Living Waters Mennonite Church.

Jack Harner, class of 2026, is Garden Spot’s reigning homecoming king, and he is one of the most gregarious and outgoing students on campus.

Harner is involved with many activities, including choir, vocal ensemble, TriM music honor society, and our theatre program, Garden Spots Performing Arts.

“A moment I greatly cherish [with GSPA] is “Into The Woods,” Harner says about his experiences last spring.

“That musical positively impacted my life in a lot of ways…and it brought a lot of the cast and crew together.

It was a very emotional and tender experience for us all to be involved with such a special, poignant production. It will always be a positive core memory of my high school years.”

After graduation, Harner plans to further his education at a university to major in biology with the hopes of pursuing a career in an animal-oriented environment.

In addition to furthering his education, Harner would like to work towards expanding his knowledge of music.

During his time at Garden Spot, Harner has had the honor of accumulating many friendships that he will carry with him in future endeavors. David Howard Hornsby David Howard Hornsby, 78, of Denver, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and spiritual leader, known for his compassionate heart and dedication to service.

Born on August 30, 1947, in Harlan County, Kentucky, David’s life was marked by a commitment to helping others. He honorably served his country as a medic in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam.

Following his military service, he pursued higher education, earning a Master of Arts in Communications from Bradley College.

David dedicated his professional life to ministry and pastoral care. He served as the beloved pastor of Faith

Covenant Church in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, from 1994 to 2002. Concurrently, he extended his spiritual guidance to those in difficult circumstances, serving as an assistant chaplain at Lancaster County Prison in Pennsylvania from 1992 to 2002. His empathy and faith left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ginger Polk Hornsby.

He was a father to his daughter, Raquel; a stepdaughter, Sonia Johnson Redcay, wife of Rodney Redcay; and a stepson, James Johnson, husband of Kathy Kaelin Johnson. He also leaves behind a brother, a sister, ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom brought great joy to his life.

Color Guard cadets of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, had the honor of participating in the Veterans Day Ceremony held on Sunday, November 9, at the Veteran’s Honor Park of Lancaster County.

The Veterans Day event was led by Jim Sinkovitz and featured a keynote speaker Senior Master Sergeant Erick C. Stone, USAF (Ret.), who shared reflections on service and sacrifice. He also spoke on the next generation of patriots and organizations such as Civil Air Patrol and ROTC. The Lancaster based Civil Air Patrol color guard cadets opened the ceremony with the formal presenting of the colors and each cadet also spoke about what being a patriot means to them.

The cadet participants were Cadet Colonel Slater Shannon, Cadet Technical Sergeant Brendon Ortiz, Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Kevin Heisey, and Cadet Airman First Class Theodore Seifferlein.

100 Years Ago This Month: Historical Events From December 1925

The month of December has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in December 1925.

• The Farmer-Labour Party is dissolved just two hours after its formation in Japan on December 1. The dissolution was ordered by the Japanese government, which accused the party of harboring a secret communist agenda.

• The border delineating Northern Ireland and Ireland is established on December 3 when repre­ sentatives of both countries sign the Northern Irish Border Agreement.

• The George Gershwin composition “Concerto in F” is performed for the first time on December 3. The performance in New York’s Carnegie Hall is conducted

by Walter Damrosch and features Gershwin on piano.

• A counterfeiting scheme is uncovered by the Banco de Portugal on December 4.

An alert bank teller tips off the bank, which ultimately discovers that wealthy entrepreneur Arthur Virgílio Alves Reis is the master­ mind behind the scheme.

Reis was eventually sentenced to 20 years in prison.

• The Pottsville Maroons defeat the Chicago Cardinals in front of 6,000 fans on December 6 in a game the press depicted as the championship of the National Football League.

• Russian Orthodox bish­ op Peter of Krutitsy is

arrested on December 9.

Peter is charged with conspiring with Russian emigres in the west. Peter is ultimately executed by shooting on October 10, 1937.

• George Bernard Shaw is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on December 10.

• Karam Chand and Kar­ tari Chand tie the knot in India on December 11. The Chand’s marriage lasts 90 years and 291 days, and is the longest marriage re­ corded. Karam Chand passed away in 2016 and Kartari in 2019.

• Communist politician Benjamin Gitlow is par­ doned by New York Governor Al Smith on

December 11. Gitlow was convicted for publishing a manifesto calling for the overthrow of the U.S. government, which Gover­ nor Smith characterized as a “political crime” upon issuing his pardon.

• The Qaja dynasty, which had ruled Iran since 1789, comes to an end on December 12 when the country’s Parliament de­ clares General Reza Khan Pahlavi Prime Minister and installs him as Shah of Iran.

• The Fascist government in Italy signs a secret pact with Britain on December 14. The pact is designed to reinforce Italian dominance in Ethiopia.

• The national service

fraternity Alpha Phi Omega is founded at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania on December 16.

• U.S. Army Colonel Billy Mitchell is convicted on eight charges of insubor­ dination on December 17.

Mitchell was critical of military leaders for investing in battleships and had argued for greater investment in air-based defenses.

• Reichstag President Paul Löbe speaks out in favor of partial prohibition in Germany on December 19.

• George Edwin Taylor passes away on December 23 at the age of 68. Taylor was the first African American presidential

candidate, running for the highest office in the United States as nominee of the National Negro Liberty Party in 1904.

• Law No. 2263 is passed by the Italian parliament on December 24. The law states that the decisions of Prime Minister Benito Mussolini and his government were not subject to legislative review and could only be overruled by order of King Victor Emmanuel III.

• A Christmas story pub­ lished in the London news­ paper The Evening News on December 24 identifies a children’s character as “Winnie-the-Pooh” for the first time. The character had previously been referred to as “Edward” in a poem published in Punch magazine in 1924.

Denver Lions Student Of The Month The Denver Lions Club recognizes Elizabeth Amudala, of Denver, as their Student of the Month for November 2025. Elizabeth is the daughter of Paul and Rachel Amudala.

Elizabeth is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and president of the school’s National Honor Society since 11th grade. She also serves as Spanish club president. Elizabeth lends her many talents to the Tri-M music program, Symphonic Band, and the high school stage productions working on stage creation and set design. We have an induction stove, and his cardiologist was uncertain if it was safe for him to use it. So, he does not cook on the stovetop and stays clear of it when I am cooking.

My history with him is very long and detailed (MRIs, CT scans, lab results, etc.). In addition, notes from all my hospital stays for chemo are there.

After my last office visit, he scheduled me for an MRI but made no mention of any change in medication.

I read his notes on the app and noticed there was an order for a new medication that was sent over to my pharmacy. It was for procarbazine, which I took as part of my chemotherapy in early 2024.
