Raymond E. “Ray” Bomberger Raymond E. “Ray” Bomberger, 86, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2025, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Gladys I. (Keeports) Bomberger. Ray is survived by his daughter, Melissa and her husband Jacob Deininger, and by numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, stepfather, and grandparents, all of whom played a profound role in his life. A proud veteran, Ray served his country in the U.S. Army and later as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years, earning a letter of commendation from his colonel. His patriotism continued throughout his life, reflected in his memberships in the American Legion, VFW, and numerous Masonic and Shrine organizations, including GH Lodge, Masons Lodge #665, Shriners, Lancaster and Reading Lodges of Perfection, Rajah Shrine, Lancaster County Shrine Club, Tall Cedars, and the Slumbering Ground Hog Lodge of Quarryville. Ray lived a life full of hard work, service, creativity, and joy. As a boy, he sold potato chips and flowers to neighbors from his bicycle and worked alongside his grandfather at Keeports Dairy, whom he always called “the greatest Grampa in the world.” He later sold French fries at Lancaster and Lincoln Speedways and newspapers in Lancaster at the corner of Prince and Chestnut and never lost his entrepreneurial spirit. He had a lifelong passion for cars. Ray owned an award-winning 1939 Chevy and a 1969 Pontiac Firebird, and he and his daughter
spent years restoring the Chevy from the ground up while hunting for parts together. He was active in numerous automotive clubs, including the Antique Auto Club of America - Hershey Region, Red Rose Antique Auto Club, and other regional groups. As a young man, he even built a soap box racer modeled after his favorite driver, Buzzy Richardson’s car. Ray loved fairs, racing, hunting, fishing, camping with family, feeding the birds, and going to car shows with his
daughter. He enjoyed reading, football-especially Penn State-and a cold Pepsi. He also looked forward every year to the New Holland and Ephrata farm show parades. A man of deep faith and dedication, Ray served his church as an elder, chairman of the church council, treasurer, and as a key contributor to the financing of a new church building. He also served as treasurer for the Road Deacons Rod & Custom Club and volunteered at Blessings of Hope Food Bank. He regularly gave blood and continued to volunteer in the community as recently as this holiday season. Ray excelled professionally in many fields. He was one of the original co-owners of Ames Construction, where he became well known for his work on numerous commercial projects, including negotiating the development of the Ephrata Rec Center, for which he will always be remembered. He worked as a construction consultant, flipped houses, served as a realtor, and was an awardwinning sales manager for Redman Homes. As a Director of Real Estate and Construction, he built 13 restaurants and remodeled many others. He was involved in three business partnerships and was known as a natural
problem solver whose advice was sought by many. In retirement, he enjoyed working at Dutch Wonderland, where he drove the train for the children. Ray designed and built his own home, volunteered to rehab a house in Biloxi, Mississippi after a hurricane, and served as a Big Brother. He was active in Junior Achievement as a sales advisor, president of his bowling league, and a steward for many years at the Ephrata Masonic Lodge. A graduate of Garden Spot High School, Class of 1957, he served as class Vice President and even held the lead role of Newt Cooper, Sheriff, in the senior play Drums of Death. He cherished time with his family, including years of traveling by train with his mother and friends to the Grocer’s Picnic in Atlantic City and many vacations with his daughter-among them a trip to Europe. One of his favorite memories was taking his daughter to seven amusement parks on seven consecutive days. Ray treasured relationships and always said “thank you.” He had over 13 joyful years with his companion, Donna.

Joyce E. Pannebecker, 83, East Cocalico Township, passed away on Thursday, December 18. She is survived by a brother, Richard Pannebecker; and a sister, Pauline Sawyer. Gerald (Gerry) Lee Ranck, 82, husband of Bette Bateman Ranck, Lititz, passed away on Thursday, December 18. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Susan Ranck, wife of Jones, and Sarah Rank Layton, wife of Mark Layton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Dorothy M. “Dottie” Rosenquist, 96, Lititz, passed away on Sunday, December 21. She was the wife of the late Edward O. Rosenquist. She is survived by a son, Edward “Skip,” husband of Yvonne Rosenquist, Calabash, North Carolina; two daughters: Lorraine A. “Lorrie,” wife of Harry Wink, Lititz, and Joanne, wife of David Bini, East Windsor, New Jersey; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Then they thank the Lord with long prayers that they are doing so well but do not realize that perhaps their neighbor’s children are going hungry. - Have you ever thought that it’s much better to help a poor person than to consume a large meal? There are many people who always give thanks if it doesn’t cost any money, and if Christianity were not free, they wouldn’t give a penny for it. Helping the poor makes for long life. - The man who gives nothing to anyone is like a pond that has no overflow. The water is green and slimy and toads and snakes sit on the bank. With them all flows in but nothing flows out. - The man who always gives is like a mountain stream. It gets much and gives all that it gets. Where it flows to, the fields are green; the birds sing in the trees and the trout flash about like lightning. The water laughs and dances and jumps for joy. One likes to drink the water and one cannot sit too near when one is tired. - But no one sits by the green pond for pleasure. So it is with a stingy person. He gives nothing and scratches all to himself like a crab. He speaks only of money and land and corn and hogs. And if you listen to him long enough, you’ll get the shakes. That’s what the green, slimy water does to you. - I am a poor man, but I assure you, if I could afford it, my greatest pleasure would be to help such miserable souls. - But I have my health and one jigger from that black bottle makes me feel as rich as Jay Gould who said he would give $1,000,000 if he could be cured of his neuralgia. There are hundreds of elderly women here on the mountain who think they could have cured him, but if he had consumed all the herbs that I did when I had the hiccoughs, he would have died much sooner. - Yes, everyone has something to be thankful for. Pastor Mohler is grateful that he gets his pay every three months and his people are thankful that they have a pastor who can interpret the New Testament. Mike Bixel is thankful he wasn’t caught when he stole Sam Siessholz’s bacon. Jake Haahneyarick is thankful that his father-in-law owned two farms. Polly is thankful that she still has her Gottlieb and I am thankful that I still have my beloved Polly. - They say the world is getting better, but I don’t believe that giving thanks helps too much if one doesn’t occasionally do one’s part. This week, we again share with our faithful readers a piece written for Thanksgiving by the late T. H. Harter, sometime editor and proprietor of The Keystone Gazette of Bellefonte. As editor of the Middleburg Post, which he edited until 1984, and later as editor of the Keystone Gazette, Harter wrote and printed letters under the heading “Brief vum Haase Barig” and addressed them to himself as “Liewer Kernel Harder” and signed them “Gottlieb Boonastiel.” Harter found these Dutch letters so essential to the prosperity of his newspaper that in order to keep up its circulation he had to write a dialect letter every week. In 1904, Harter first published his letters in a book under the title of Boonastiel, A Volume Of Legend, Story and Song In Pennsylvania Dutch.

Theodore S. Lyon, 80, Narvon, passed away on Monday, December 22. He is survived by his partner, Nancy Stover, Narvon; three sons: Theodore S. Lyon Jr., husband of Fran, Irmo, South Carolina; Timothy Paul Lyon, husband of Amber, Panama City Beach, Florida; and Jeffrey Houck; two daughters: Tracie Michelle Lyon, Cumming, Georgia, and Candy Cox, Narvon; three brothers: Tom Lyon, husband of Elise, Phoenix, Arizona; Terry Lyon, husband of Cathy, Seminole, Florida; and Tony Maclay, husband of Doug, Stroudsburg; a sister, Teresa Pine, Yardley; and his former wives, Joan Martin and Joan Sloyer. Betty (Benzing) Mackie, 103, New Holland, passed away on Monday, December 22. She was the wife of the late Donald William Mackie. She is survived by a son, David John Mackie, Glenmoore; a daughter, Brooke Ann Mackie-Ketcham, South Hamilton, Massachusetts; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Janet E. Wert, 90, of Denver, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, at home in Denver. Born June 6, 1935, in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, Janet was the daughter of the late Paul G. & Mae F. (Frees) Griffith, and the loving wife of Howard J. Wert until his passing in 2020. Janet embarked on her professional journey shortly after graduating from Reamstown High School in 1953. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open her own beauty salon in Reamstown in 1964, a venture that showcased her talents and love for hairdressing. In 1962, she pursued formal education in hairdressing, which laid the foundation for her successful career. After many years of serving her clients, she transitioned to Science Press, where she worked in the cut-out department before becoming a proofreader. Janet dedicated 25 years to Science Press, continuing her work until her retirement in 1988. A member of the East Cocalico Church of the Brethren, Janet was known

She was born in New Holland, PA to the late Levi and Emma (Stauffer) Zimmerman and was the wife of the late Edwin S. Auker. She was an avid lover of flowers and gardening. Her gift of hospitality in making and serving meals was greatly enjoyed by family and friends. Mary was a member of the Denver Mennonite Church. She is survived by a son, Donald Ray, husband of Angela (Zimmerman) Auker of Lebanon PA; 2 daughters, JoAnne, wife of Merlin Boll of Ephrata PA, Lois Dawn, wife of Mark Myer of Leetonia, OH; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Levi Zimmerman of KY, John, husband of Hettie (Good) Zimmerman of PA; and 5 sisters, Alice, wife of the late Harvey Auker, of MO, Lucy, wife of Clyde Wenger, of MO, Emma, wife of Carmi Horst, of IL, Martha Zimmerman, of PA, and Susie, wife of Levi Horst, of PA. Daniel Poplavskyy Senior
One of Daniel Poplavskyy’s proudest accomplishments is making the team for Lancaster Football Club after not being on a team for two years. That achievement reflects his determination and commitment to pursuing his passions. Poplavskyy has been playing soccer for 5 years. Although the senior did not play for Ephrata this year, he played at his previous school, Hinkletown. Daniel Poplavskyy is a student at EHS who has built a reputation for his determination, positive outlook, and dedication both inside and outside of the classroom. The senior had transferred this year, coming from Hinkletown. When asked what he enjoys most about school, the senior points to “the fun with friends throughout the year.” He also enjoys math and science classes because of the direct challenges they provide, pushing him to think critically and solve problems. Outside of academics, Poplavskyy stays active with sports and hobbies. He is currently working at an auto body supplies shop and plans to play volleyball. Soccer, volleyball, round out his favorite hobbies. Poplavskyy looks forward to playing volleyball for school this year as he played middle blocker and hitter at his last school. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with friends or relaxing with video games. Poplavskyy also values faith and community, being involved at Petra Church in New Holland. Looking ahead, he plans to either work full-time or pur pursue engineering studies at Penn State. Poplavskyy lives with his parents Andriy and Greta and two other siblings. Poplavskyy values his dad Andriy as a role model as he looks up to him. Poplavskyy carries forward a power powerful sense of responsibility and respect for challenging work. Isabella Sciarrino is in 7th grade at Catalyst Christian School. She is always able to listen, is caring, and always has a smile on her face. Isabella enjoys helping others at school and loves to be around her classmates. Wher Wherever she goes, she always has a positive attitude. Some extracurriculars that Isabella does are: archery, theater, flags, and dance. Her favorite classes in school are L.A and Health. At home she has many hobbies, some of which are: running, drawing, singing, reading, and hanging out with friends and family. Some of her accomplishments so far are shooting a ‘50’ at archery, getting a lead role in a play at her church, and getting a medal in archery. At her church (Manheim BIC), Isabella attends a youth group called “Remix” and once served for three hours helping hand out ice cream! One person she admires is her brother, Nicholas. She admires him because he is a good role model, helps her with many things, and likes being with her. When she is older, Isabella would like to be a nurse, so she can help people. Biblical Message
Persecution, No Surprise Author: Wenger Scripture: 1 Peter 4:12 “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you.” The fiery ordeal is suffering/persecution; Peter makes that clear in the chapter. As a Christian, suffering for Christ shouldn’t come as a surprise to us. Anytime you oppose to the world’s system, you will encounter resistance up to and including suffering for righteousness sake itself. The problem is that God has a standard. He has revealed truth that opposes lies, light that refutes darkness, righteousness that flies in the
face of man’s evil deeds. The Bible says men love darkness rather than light. John 3:20 states: “For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” Persecution started in the beginning when Cain killed his brother. 1 John 3:12 gives us the commentary, “Not as Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And for what reason did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil, but his brothers were righteous.” We also see that Israel’s own religious leaders often persecuted the prophets that God sent to rebuke them when they were living in sin and disobedience. Luke 13:34 says, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you would not.” Christ himself was always under the hatred of the religious self-righteous
leaders of his time. John 15:25 says, “they hated me without a cause.” The leaders were constantly looking for an opportunity to take Christ and put him to
death, but they feared the people. Jealousy and Christ’s burning words of condemnation for the Pharisees brought about a hatred that always leads to murderous

then people just plain dislike our personality, that’s not persecution. We should rejoice in persecution. Peter goes on in 1 Peter 4:13, 14, “but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be overjoyed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, and of God, rests upon you.” Our response should be that we know it will happen. We are to rejoice when it does and we are to be motivated by the future at Christ’s return. We can never handle persecution unless we look to the eternal, to what’s ahead and not this temporal present world. Persecution has always been good for the church and Christ’s cause. It will sure separate the wheat from the tares. Matthew 5:12 says, “Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

intent. People who lie and believe lies will do anything to stop the truth. When presented with the truth, they will always turn on the one who presents that truth. The New Testament believers faced persecution. Stephen was the church’s first martyr. We shouldn’t be surprised of the fiery ordeal, but we should expect persecution. What does the scripture say? Not many, not most, but “all that live godly in Christ shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). There is more persecution of Christianity today than at any other time in history. What should be our response to persecution? First of all, understand it’s just natural. Animosity is going to happen. We need to guard our attitude to be sure if people recoil. It’s about the message and not the messenger. Peter later quickly goes on to say, “Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler” (1 Peter 4:15). If we are obnoxious in our demeanor,

A torrent of water rises 35 feet, forcing roughly 50,000 people to evacuate their homes. • General Theodoros Pangalos declares a state of emergency in Greece and assumes dictatorial powers on January 3. General Pangalos had become Prime Minister of Greece in June 1925 after orchestrating a coup d’état. • Great War cemeteries in France are submerged on January 7 due to ongoing downpours affecting various areas throughout Europe. The same rains flood the London subway system as well. • Gracie Allen and George Burns are married by a justice of the peace in Cleveland on January 7. The newlyweds ultimately gain renown as the comedy duo Burns and Allen. • Twelve-year-old Prince Nguyen Phúc Thuy is crowned Emperor of Vietnam on January 8. The prince’s father, Emperor Khai Dinh, died two months earlier on November 6. • Herman, Henry and Hillel Hassenfeld incorporate the Hassenfeld Brothers company on January 8. The company initially manufactures school supplies but eventually begins to make toys under the name “Hasbro.”
• Twenty Mexican rebels open fire aboard a train traveling from Guadalajara to Mexico City on January 9. The bandits escape with the equivalent of $150,000 USD. • The four-masted schooner Prinz Valdemar capsizes on January 10, blocking all ship traffic in and out of Biscayne Bay and the harbor of Miami, Florida. All aboard are rescued unharmed, but two ocean liners are prevented from leaving the harbor. • United States Representative John W. Langley of Kentucky resigns from Congress on January 11. Langley’s resignation comes after the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed his jail sentence for violating prohibition laws by illegally selling alcohol to New York-based bootleggers with ties to organized crime. • Michael Bond is born in Newbury, Berkshire, England, on January 13. Persecution is a blessing to those that live godly lives, and should not be feared, but accepted with joy. It was a reality to Christians in times past, is a reality to many in other countries today, and will most likely be a reality for us here in North America if God permits time, and if we rise up to truly follow all the commandments of Jesus. This holiday season, the Trupe family asked for donations in honor of their late son, Kole Trupe. The family collects toys for other children. Cocalico School District is a designated
collection location, serving as one of the many drop-off sites in East Cocalico Town ship. The district works closely with the Cocalico Police Department, who have played a vital role in

Constance “Connie” Lorraine Brown Mrs. Constance “Connie” Lorraine Brown (nee Strickler), 88, of Ephrata PA passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, at Faithful Living. She was born in Hopeland, to the late Jim and Verna Strickler and raised with strong values and a sense of faith. She was rooted in her community and a dedicated member of Hopeland United Methodist Church, Lititz. She worked at A.G. Kurtz and Ira G. Steffy Welding as a receptionist. She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Marlene Strickler of Ephrata, Kathy Markley (Charles) of Lititz; four stepchildren, Clyde Brown (Linda), Mike Brown (Lynette), the late Donna Sheehan (Ken), Tom Brown (Tammie); nine step grandchildren; many step great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Raymond Drayer of Ephrata; two nieces, Cherie Sweigart (Kenneth), Andrea Yingst (Ken); three grandnephews; a grandniece; a great-grandnephew, all of Ephrata & New Holland. Connie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clyde Brown, with whom she shared many cherished years; an infant sister and her sister, Charlotte Drayer.
