Capital Campaign Surpasses Quarter Mark

S

holom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign is delighted to announce the first quarter mark has been surpassed toward reaching the $44 Million Campaign goal. The largest strategic effort in recent history for Sholom, this life-changing Campaign will fulfill current and future capital needs, upgrade and introduce technological advancements, strengthen employee programs and benefits, and position the organization for the future. Sholom’s Capital Campaign, under the direction of the Sholom Foundation, represents a strategic planning effort which determined funding priorities and reinforced the vision to provide professional cutting edge services and programs in a warm, secure, Jewish environment where all are welcome. Over 50 dedicated and passionate individuals are volunteering their time and efforts to raise these funds for Sholom.

framed print hangs in Mike Saxon’s office which portrays his grandfather, his dad, and a Bar Mitzvah-aged Mike. Next to the picture is a Talmudic quote, “My fathers planted for me, and I plant for my children.” For Mike, this quote has become his mantra and guides his dedication and deep involvement with the Sholom Foundation, Sholom, and the Twin Cities Jewish Community.

Mike was raised in St. Louis Park and followed in the footsteps of his family, actively participating at Beth El Synagogue, joining AZA, and spending lots of time on the sports courts at the Jewish Community Center.

Years later, a friend asked Mike for a favor, “Please join me as a volunteer with the Young Men’s Division" of [what is now] the St. Paul Jewish Federation. Hearkening to the lessons he’d learned growing up, Mike happily agreed to serve, setting the stage for a life time of volunteering and community service.

Mike’s family has a long history with Sholom. His paternal grandfather was a resident at an early Sholom facility on Randolph Street in St. Paul, and both his grandmothers lived at Sholom – one in St. Paul and one in St. Louis Park.

Attending the Sholom Auxiliary’s Ball with friends, Mike and his wife Polly joined the ranks of Sholom contributors and volunteers. It wasn’t long before Mike was recruited to join the Sholom Foundation Board and Polly was recruited to the Sholom Board. Mike held several positions on the Board including Board President.

While Mike was President, Sholom requested that the Sholom Foundation conduct a Capital Campaign to raise the funds necessary to meet several organizational needs.

Projects had long been deferred or delayed.

Working together with the Foundation’s Executive Director, Joel Mandel, they assembled the Campaign Cabinet whose members continue to motivate and lead the Campaign.

Mike shared thoughts about the Campaign. “We want the community to understand the vital role Sholom plays in both the Jewish and general communities and the full scope of services offered today. At the same time, we need to ensure that those individuals who are not yet seeking Sholom’s services understand how Sholom continually builds upon successes to be ready for future generations. his is a very exciting time at Sholom as we embark on the Care Comes First Capital Campaign. We are securing pledges to make improvements on Sholom campuses and we are investing in the quality of the care we provide. We are already seeing improvements.

In order to make all of this possible, a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication is required and we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire community.

We want to especially thank the Campaign volunteers for all the work they are doing. Our dedicated volunteers have taken time out of their business and family life to attend meetings and solicitations. Our volunteers have opened their homes and hosted meetings and educational sessions.

They realize that this Campaign is about the future for Sholom and are some of our greatest advocates. Our dedicated staff members, including Sholom’s CEO, Barbara Klick and Sholom Foundation’s Executive Director, Joel Mandel, are working tirelessly to make this Campaign a reality. Our supportive staff volunteer countless hours to ensure the success of this Campaign. Volunteers, staff members, committee chairs, and committee members are some of the first to make a pledge to the Campaign.

t Sholom, Care Comes First, is as true today as the day Sholom opened its doors 110 years ago. Our Mission is unwavering, but our buildings and technical abilities require upgrades and modernization to exceed state-of-the-art standards. Changes brought about with Capital Campaign funds will be transformative. The Campaign will bring needed funds to both campuses, with many of the physical plant needs focused at the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus in St. Louis Park/Minneapolis.

While newer, the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in St. Paul is also in need of capital funding.

The Campaign is designed to fulfill needs in four defined areas or PILLARS: $20,000,000

1. FACILITIES RENEWAL  CHANGING LIVES THROUGH RENEWING OUR HOMES

Remodeling and upgrading our buildings will keep Sholom vibrant, up-to-date, and competitive in today’s market. Design features will meet the needs of today’s senior with an eye toward the future.

THE ACKERBERG FAMILY SHOLOM WEST CAMPUS WILL EXPERIENCE THESE TREMENDOUS CHANGES: • Elevating rehabilitation services is a high priority to rebuild and maintain each individual’s physical abilities and strength. Improved rehabilitation services will feature modern room design, development of satellite rehab stations, and simulated real-life scenarios emphasizing skills abilities, e.g. transferring in/out of an actual car; “shopping” at a simulated grocery store; ambulating on a walking path featuring varying surfaces and lighting; sitting down and arising from a restaurant “booth” and theatre style seating.

• Installation of upgraded flooring, walls, doors, hardware and finishes to modernize and professionalize the Care Center environment. Evidenced-based research will help inform color choice, materials, and placement.

• Reconfiguration of long-term care floor design at Sholom Home West to include room clusters, gathering spaces, expanded number of private rooms, and modern work areas to better meet the needs of residents and staff.

• Upgrades in many campus components: commercial kitchens, lobbies, dining rooms, and furnishings with an emphasis on way-finding and space orientation, designed to modernize all areas of each campus where needed, and address the changing needs of our senior population.

• Introduction of integrated service spaces for specialized programming to enhance staff education, skill development, and provide additional capacity for resident learning opportunities.

THE SHALLER FAMILY SHOLOM EAST CAMPUS WILL SEE THESE IMPROVEMENTS: • Installation of new windows in the Bentson Assisted Living Residence.

• Upgrades to the David Feinberg Aquatics and Vitality Center for improved usability.

• Installation of upgraded floor coverings throughout the campus and new furnishings in the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East to maintain a safe environment and provide a comfortable and cheerful home.

2. ASSET PRESERVATION  INVESTING IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY

Maintaining our buildings and grounds is a top priority. The Campaign will: • Enable the upgrade of several systems to ensure safe and sound buildings and grounds which meet code requirements and to provide a setting which is comfortable and provides residents and families with peace of mind. These include life safety systems, HVAC systems, landscaping, plumbing, and infrastructure systems at both campuses including the production kitchen on the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus and Knollwood Place Apartments on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. Plans include roof replacement as well as modernization of elevators at Knollwood Place Apartments.

3. TECHNOLOGY  BRINGING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY TO THE SHOLOM COMMUNITY

Technology is vital in every area of life. At Sholom, upgrading Wi-Fi and introducing essential web-based health care tools will improve quality of life, modernize our health care model, and prepare Sholom for the next generation of health care systems.

The Campaign will: • Install/upgrade electronic medical/health records, nurse call and pendant systems with voice operability, Wi-Fi across both campuses, and wireless communications providing improved health information, improved communication tools and response time. This prepares the organization for advances in health care technology.

An Interview with Barbara Klick, CEO

B

arbara Klick, Sholom’s CEO, was smiling as she shared recent conversations with residents at Knollwood Place Apartments. John Zima was ecstatic about the parking lot because safety was part of his work history. John gushed, “You listened to my advice and you’ve created a safe space for people getting in and out of cars when you created a curbless sidewalk at the entry of Knollwood Place Apartments. Thank you!”

Shirley Rothstein loves how helpful “that voice in the elevator is.” After a moment, Barbara understood.

Shirley was visually impaired and had a difficult time seeing the elevator buttons. During the modernization of the elevators, audible announcements were added which helped Shirley return to feeling truly independent.

The Sholom Alliance Board of Directors hired Barbara Klick, RN, MBA, a seasoned health care professional and organizational leader, to join Sholom in the Summer of 2016 as the new Chief Executive Officer.

Recently, Barbara was asked several questions about the Capital Campaign.

What is the progress of the Capital Campaign?

Our Sholom donors and dedicated staff are guided by our shared commitment to excellence and Sholom’s bright future. We are thrilled with the generosity of the community as we have raised nearly $12 million of our identified $44 million of need. Over 50 dedicated individuals are volunteering their time and energy on this vital project. The Sholom Community is extremely grateful to these volunteers.

What does the Capital Campaign mean for Sholom, the residents, families, and staff members?

The Capital Campaign makes it possible for Sholom, a vital community resource, to maintain and enhance our warm and secure surroundings and programs. Through Campaign funding, we have redecorated the 2nd and 3rd floors at Sholom Home West, and they are beautiful! Dining rooms are renewed, flooring is upgraded, walls brightened, and newly installed beautiful

wooden doors all create a warm, fresh, and inviting environment. All who’ve experienced the “before and after” comment on these wonderful changes. Residents and staff alike share a sense of pride and ownership in the “new” surroundings. Witnessing continuous improvements across Sholom campuses inspire our residents and staff. A family member said, “The difference between last year and now is remarkable. This feels so much warmer. I’m happy to see what you’ve done!” The vibrant colors on the walls and in the carpeting brighten not only the color scheme, but also people's moods and outlook.

OUR GOAL is to provide a safe, comfortable, and professional environment in which individuals live and work. These modifications are life changing and are critical in achieving this goal.

Will you please share more information about some of the other important changes?

I am so excited about our forward progress. The Campaign has allowed us to complete, to date: • Renovating the parking lot at the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus including new LED lighting and correcting the traffic flow making it safer for all.

• Replacing the roof and modernizing the elevators at Knollwood Place Apartments maintaining our property for safety and comfort.

• Replacing and installing chillers and air conditioning systems allowing for improved ventilation and air circulation.

• Renovating the David Feinberg Vitality and Aquatics Center improving utilization.

• Upgrading the web-based staff identification and building access systems strengthening campus security.

• Upgrading of the Wanderguard system enabling residents who may wander more freedom to safely move about.

• Upgrading and installing Wi-Fi across both campuses facilitating Internet connection in all areas of both campuses.

• Installing a new nurse call system at Sholom Home West with interactive voice operability increasing the speed of communication between resident and staff while reducing anxiety and uncertainty.

• Upgrading and implementing electronic health care record systems in conjunction with installation of upgraded PC’s improving efficacy of health records, efficiency in staffing, and increasing the time available for staff to interact with residents.

Sholom must be responsive and seek innovative ways to meet the growing senior population and new expectations regarding their care and independence. Sholom is the only Jewish senior community in Minnesota, and we offer many levels of care from community-based home care and hospice to long-term skilled nursing, shortterm rehabilitation, assisted and independent living, adult day programs, and several out-patient alternatives. We serve

To combat increasing pressures in the labor market, we were pleased to increase our pension match to be more competitive in today’s employment market. For Sholom staff members, the campaign buoys the spirit of pride in the work place. New tools, remodeled work spaces, and attention to salary and benefits have a direct effect on team esprit de corps, for those already employed at Sholom, and those being recruited.

As a financially stable and sustainable organization, Sholom budgets nearly $1 million annually to invest in preventive maintenance programs and capital improvements. Because of deferred maintenance and projects, the Capital Campaign is essential to restoring Sholom and ensuring our future.

We will continue to work with our lay leadership to deliver quality care and advance knowledge in a variety of methods, e.g. technological advances, staffing specialties, communitybased outpatient services, new partners and new affiliations.

The Capital Campaign allows us to make these plans for our successful future. This is a remarkable and pivotal time for Sholom. With your support, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. “My fathers planted for me, and I plant for my children.” Mike and Polly have taken this to heart. They serve on the Capital Campaign Cabinet, hold leadership positions throughout the organization, and lend their time and heart. They have also paved the way for future generations at Sholom by establishing the Polly & Michael Saxon Family Fund, an endowment fund at the Sholom Foundation designed to help secure Sholom’s future.

Mike walks the talk. He is often found meeting with prospective donors or working with Board and Committee members, sharing his enthusiasm for the amazing things happening at Sholom, and ensuring that this vital organization continues to provide compassionate care for seniors in our community for generations to come. In true Mike Saxon fashion, Mike humbly states, “We understand that each generation needs to make things better for the next and recognize everything earlier generations did for us. In the very same way, incumbent upon us, is the responsibility to improve the world for the generations who follow.”
