Magic Tables are interactive games designed to unlock memorable moments for residents in memory care while they enjoy rich and engaging social experiences with one another. They’ve been a transformational addition to our campuses.

Larry David RESIDENT COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR KNOLLWOOD PLACE APARTMENTS
When Larry David looked to move a few years ago, he remembered that his mother had lived at Sholom in the 1990s. Larry has fond memories of playing piano concerts at Sholom and giving his mother something to kvell about. “When I was considering where to move, my son told me ‘You deserve to be in a place where you’re secure, happy, and appreciated for who you are,’ and so
I made the move to Knollwood Place Apartments,” Larry shared.
A life-long learner, musician, and former keyboardist of the Milwaukee Symphony, Larry still spends hours practicing piano, composing, and sharing his talents with residents at Sholom. “I’m just semiretired and doing my own thing to provide a little music,” he said. “I love
that I’m able to give something back and play for the residents here.”
He has become a social ambassador helping residents feel at home on campus through his musical offerings. “I’d like people to know it’s a welcoming community, and that nice things happen here,” he said. “I do feel truly, maybe for the first time in my life, a part of a real community.”

ADMISSIONS COORDINATOR
SHIRLEY CHAPMAN SHOLOM EAST CAMPUS
When Dannelle King joined Sholom staff in 2013, she was carrying on a family legacy. Her grandmother Jane King worked in Sholom’s business department for 20 years and earned Employee of the Month recognition twice. “I still have her plaques at home,” Dannelle said. Her cousin Joanne was lead baker when she retired from Sholom after 37 years, and her sister Ashley currently works in the dietary department and with central supplies.
After five years as a nursing assistant, Dannelle worked her way up to her current position as admissions coordinator. She is in contact with social workers at hospitals across the state to help with discharge planning, including reviewing referrals for transitional and long-term care, understanding insurance and cost of medications, and placing individuals according to the level of care needed.
“I see my job to help people find a place where they’re comfortable and at home, involved in their care, and able to express what their needs are and have those needs met,” Dannelle shared. “I like how the staff and the residents come together at Sholom. You see these people every single day and they become an extension of your family.”

The Goldman Family
DONORS
Susan and Richard “Dick” Goldman have been stalwart supporters of Sholom for 15 years and counting. Dick’s mother lived at Sholom, and after she passed away, the Goldmans chose to honor her memory by providing annual support to Sholom and by establishing a legacy gift for the future. They cite the excellent care Dick’s mother received as their main impetus for giving, coupled with an awareness of the importance of Sholom to the community.
As a member of the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society that honors those who have included Sholom in their estate plans, Dick shares that “Sholom is a vital institution, especially for the Jewish people. We felt it was important to participate and also to include charitable giving in our estate plan.”
The Goldmans say they gain satisfaction and benefit from their donations, whether seeing immediate results like campus improvements and new equipment, or knowing that their fund
leaves an enduring legacy that is an expression of their family’s values.
“The Sholom Foundation has done a spectacular job of taking care of us as contributors by keeping us informed of what’s going on and explaining where money is going,” Dick said. “The staff really care about what they’re doing.”
For all these reasons, the Goldmans feel proud to be associated with Sholom and its mission.

Scrumptious Rugelach

INGREDIENTS
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups unbleached flour
Dash salt
1 ¼ cup thick, good quality strawberry preserves
¾ cup walnuts, roughly chopped and browned in a pan or 350 degree oven Sugar for sprinkling
Yield: about 64 small rugelach
PREPARATION
Step 1
Put cream cheese and butter in an electric mixer fitted with the paddle. Cream on low speed until blended, about 2 minutes. Add flour and salt and mix until a very soft dough is formed, about 2 more minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight.
Step 2
Preheat oven to 350 degrees, line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Step 3
Put strawberry jam in one small bowl and the nuts in another. Divide dough into 4 balls. Roll one ball into a circle about 1/8 inch thick and 9 inches in diameter. Spoon 1/4 of the strawberry filling onto the circle almost to the edge, leaving about a 1/2 inch border. Sprinkle with a quarter of the nuts.

Step 4
Using a pizza wheel, cut each circle into 16 pie-shaped pieces. Roll up from the wide side to the center and press slightly to close. Repeat with remaining dough.
Step 5
Put the rugelach on the cookie sheets and bake in oven on middle and lower racks, switching after 12 minutes, also switching back to front. Continue baking about 13 more minutes, or until golden brown. Remove rugelach to racks to cool. Sprinkle with sugar before serving.

Sheryl & Randy Rutzick VOLUNTEERS
Randy Rutzick’s Sholom journey began in the mid-1970’s when his grandparents resided at Sholom Home in St. Paul. He vividly recalls how his parents supported Sholom by attending the Sholom Ball, one of the biggest and most important events of the year. Even as a teenager, he could see the important function Sholom was providing to the Jewish community… and how the Jewish community supported Sholom in return.
After his mother passed away in 2010, his father Yale moved into Knollwood Place
Apartments. “He loved it there, and he belonged there,” Randy said. “This was the perfect place for the next phase of his life.”
Randy’s wife Sheryl, who grew up in Connecticut, saw first-hand her fatherin-law’s experience at Knollwood and Sholom, and she was hooked. That launched 15 years of volunteer service that continues today. In earlier years, she worked in the gift shop at Sholom, started making knishes, and joined the Auxiliary. From there she joined the Board
and became President of the Auxiliary, a role she held for many years. Currently, Sheryl volunteers for the Opening Minds through Art program for persons with dementia, helps at the Menorah Plaza Food Shelf, and calls a mean game of Bingo on Monday nights.
“My favorite thing is Sheryl helps me plant flowers and maintain the Sholom courtyard, something I committed to my Dad I would do,” Randy shared. “My family has received a lot from Sholom over the years…this is just us giving back.”

Sholom welcomes local clergy and groups from synagogues and Jewish schools to make connections with residents. Clergy not only regularly visit their congregants on both campuses, but also periodically lead Shabbat and high holiday services.
“Jewish residents love to see their congregational clergy on campus,” said Rabbi Shalom Resnik-Bell, Director of Pastoral Care.
Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker, lead rabbi at Mount Zion Temple, has been visiting
Sholom campuses for nearly three decades. “Mount Zion has always prioritized the care of our seniors,” Spilker said. “As life is a cycle, our clergy are honored to be able to visit members at Sholom during times of grief and celebration.”
The congregation supports Sholom in many different ways. During the pandemic, Mount Zion’s seventh-grade class chose Sholom for their B’nei Mitzvah class tzedakah.
“It was a moving experience for youth to see how their donations helped our elders, receiving personal notes of gratitude from Sholom’s CEO to each of them,” Spilker recalled.
“Each time I come to campus, I can feel how Sholom honors the past and builds deep connections with all who enter. I do feel that we are all helping create a sense of belonging.”
