Your relationship with Sholom matters deeply to us; Sholom can provide quality and compassionate care to elders across Twin Cities because of your unwavering support.

The global events that occurred late in 2023 were a stark reminder of how Sholom’s mission to support the most vulnerable in our world matters more than ever before. During 2023/5784, you showed up alongside our residents and their families, investing in Sholom with selfless gifts of volunteer time, in-kind items, and financial resources.

Your personal gestures of kindness continue to serve as powerful and joyful reminders of what tikkun olam, repairing the world, can feel like to residents like Henry (pictured on the cover), who are living life fully.

Thanks to supporters like you, Sholom made strategic investments in the people, environment, and systems that help make our work possible. We continue to invest in our employees and leverage automation and technology to advance healthcare outcomes. New rehabilitation equipment, such as our transformational “Lite-Run,” which uses air pressure and wearable pants to lift a person off the ground, enhances Sholom’s ability to provide robust therapies that improve quality of life.

Sholom’s 2023 Impact Report continues our strategy to share more staff, volunteer, partner, and supporter stories, along with images showing our residents in action. With a new Sholom Foundation website, successful annual Family Fun Day fundraising event, and revitalized occupancy strategies across Sholom Community Alliance, we look to 2024/5785 from a position of growth and opportunity.

RESIDENT

Growing up in St. Paul, Henry’s earliest experience with Sholom began at age 13. After he became a Bar Mitzvah, Henry would visit and make music with residents of Sholom each month. Part of a mentorship program across multiple organizations and congregations at the time, Henry quickly became involved in the community and discovered a love for helping others.

Henry enjoyed a long career as a social worker and remains deeply connected to our local Jewish community, recalling that as a reason he chose to move to Bentson Assisted Living on the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. As he said, “I could interact with residents who I knew, and who already knew me or my parents.”

Prior to living at Bentson, Henry was an activities volunteer at Sholom and continues that today. From helping with Shabbat and holiday observances to providing residents transportation to services at area congregations for early morning minyans, he enjoys helping people and sees himself in so many of the staff at Sholom.

“Sholom’s social and music programs are good,” Henry said. “Their therapy is also good, and I have noticed a lot of stability with their staffing. I have great respect for them.” Henry hopes that Sholom continues to bring new resources and meaningful experiences to residents.

MAINTENANCE STAFF

Jimm joined the maintenance staff at Sholom in 2019 after several years in the industry. Growing up in the local Hmong community, he was always close to the construction and electrical trades supporting his family with translation services. Jimm finds it an enjoyable experience working with elders. “I choose to stay at Sholom for the wonderful and supportive environment, my teammates, and because I feel supported by very patient residents and staff members,” he said.

Heritage Society

Nancy Sipkins

VOLUNTEER

Nancy Sipkins built her professional career around helping others, and, as a retiree, she likes to have full and busy days continuing on the same path. “I get my happy quotient filled by volunteering at Sholom,” she explained. Helping residents create Shabbat flower arrangements every other week allows Nancy to combine her love of gardening with bringing joy.

Nancy appreciates the flexibility of volunteering, as she also gifts her time to two other organizations beyond Sholom. “Flowers bring happiness, and, for me, I can be both messy and creative,” she said. “It’s such a healing experience for me, and the residents of Sholom really do feel like friends.”

PAINT, PAPER, SCISSORS • SHOLOM PARTNERSHIP

“It’s really more about the relationships than the art itself,” explained Bev Leckie, co-owner with Pam Chenevert of Paint, Paper, Scissors, a Sholom partner since 2017. Bev and Pam regularly facilitate joyful and meaningful art programs with Sholom residents across all campuses. “Our guided art process gives clients time and space to enjoy simple pleasures, and, perhaps most importantly, individual choice in how they want to approach the color and design of each project,” said Pam.

One weekly program, Opening Minds through Art (OMA), is an award-winning, evidence-based program that brings together elders living with memory loss with volunteers to build relationships through abstract art projects. “We love our OMA volunteers and wish more people would join us to forge these important bonds of friendship through art,” Bev said.

Whether through OMA or their other program offerings at Sholom, Bev and Pam take pride in the fact that some

of their class “regulars” are residents who rarely attend other events and gatherings. “It’s the human connection that draws them in and makes a big difference in their lives,” Pam said.

Spring Zucchini Kugel

Ingredients

5 medium zucchini olive oil salt and pepper

4 eggs

2 tsp fresh lemon zest

Directions

1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil

1 Tbsp chopped fresh mint

1/2 cup matzo meal

1/2 Tbsp salt

2 tsp black pepper

• Using a spiralizer or vegetable peeler, make long noodles out of zucchini.

• Heat 1-2 Tbsp olive oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Saute zucchini in batches for 3-4 minutes each until soft and slightly translucent. Add a pinch of salt and pepper with each batch.

• Place the cooked zucchini in a colander and drain excess liquid. Make sure to squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• In a 9×13 baking dish, add another 2 Tbsp olive oil to the dish and place in the oven to heat up while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

• In a large bowl whisk the eggs with mint, basil, salt, pepper and matzo meal. Add zucchini and stir gently until completely mixed.

• After oil has heated in pan around 5-10 minutes, add zucchini mixture to pan. Using a spatula or the back of a spoon smooth out top.

• Bake for 45-55 minutes or until edges are crispy and the kugel is set in the middle. You may need to drain off excess oil and liquid and place back into the oven for additional 5-10 minutes.

• Once kugel has cooked through, remove from oven and allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting. Serve at room temperature or warm.
