In Brief By Scott Lancaster Mote’s Sea Turtle Patrol kicks off the seaon LONGBOAT KEY - Mote Marine Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program and Mote’s Sea Turtle Patrol, a group of scientists, interns and volunteers, recently began monitoring 35 miles of beaches from Longboat Key to Venice for the 2017 sea turtle nesting season. Staff and volunteers walk the beaches early each morning looking for signs of turtle nesting as part of an effort to study and conserve sea turtles. Data from each nesting season contributes to a statewide understanding of nesting sea turtles. Following the 2016 nesting season, Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program reported that Longboat Key through Venice hosted a total of 4,588 nests, which blew away the 2015 record by 2,103 nests. Florida's west coast hosts the largest nesting population of loggerhead sea turtkes in the Gulf of Mexico. Nesting season officially runs from May 1 through Oct. 31.

New Longboat shuttle service up and running Scott Lancaster

T

he Longboat Key Shuttle, a new on-demand/call ahead shuttle service, is now available on Longboat Key between Bay Isles and Coquina Beach. This unique and innovative service provides a customer friendly, curb-to-curb service that residents and visitors can access either on local streets, or at existing bus stops along Gulf of Mexico Drive. According to William Steele, the Transit Division manager for Manatee County, “The Longboat Key Shuttle was developed in response to the desires of residents of Longboat Key.” Users of the shuttle service can simply call to reserve a trip by 5:00 p.m. the day before they want to travel and a shuttle service vehicle will pick them up and drop them off within the Longboat

Key Shuttle service area. Residents can enjoy ease of travel throughout the island with convenient connections to Anna Maria Island and the AMI Trolley at Coquina Beach. Mainland destinations are also easily accessed with transit route connections that are available at Coquina Beach and Bay Isles. For repetitive travel needs, the shuttle offers subscription service, so that passengers can schedule multiple trips with one phone call. A pre-paid fare option is also available, so that passengers do not need to bring the cash fare. The shuttle fare is $1.50 for each trip. Passengers transferring from mainland bus routes benefit as well, as shuttle operators accept valid Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) and Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT)

bus passes in lieu of a fare payment. Walk-up service is available at designated bus stops when shuttle vehicles are in operation. The shuttle vehicles accommodate bikes and are accessible for people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. The new shuttle service has replaced Manatee County Area Transit”s (MCAT) Longboat Key Trolley, but Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) will continue to operate their Route 18, which runs every hour between Bay Isles and downtown Sarasota. For more information about the Longboat Key Shuttle, visit the MCAT website at www.mymanatee.org/mcat or call 941-748-2317.

Sarasota and FDOT officials meet with Longboat commissioners to discuss U.S. 41 roundabout deal

W

e all know beach traffic is a nightmare, especially at this time of year, and especially as cars funnel onto our islands from the main-

land.

For some time, city and county officials have been mulling ideas to temper the everincreasing flow of traffic to and from the beaches, and now, the city of Sarasota and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) appear to be getting ready to pull the trigger on an extensive plan to add a number of traffic roundabouts to U.S. 41. Sarasota city planners, as well as representatives from FDOT, recently met with members of the Longboat Key Commission and Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock to pitch their plan for the addition of the roundabouts, particularly the one that will have the

most impact on Longboat Key: a proposed roundabout at the eastern base of the Ringling Bridge, at U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue. Longboat officials seemed more or less ambivalent about the proposed roundabouts, except to urge Sarasota planners to keep Longboat Key’s interests in mind and not make the traffic situation any worse than it already is. However, the pitch for the second part of the proposal did not go as smoothly. This part of the plan involves reducing the number of traffic lanes on Fruitville Road from two lanes each way down to one lane each way, in order to create a more pedestrian and bicycle friendly downtown area. Bullock, as well as Town Commissioner Jim Brown, were skeptical that reducing the number of traffic lanes would help with the flow of traffic. If everything goes as planned, the city of Sarasota hopes to configure 11 new roundabouts along U.S. 41 over the next five years, at an estimated cost of around $30 million.

78%

According to FDOT, by converting a typical intersection to a roundabout, that location can experience a 78% reduction in severe crashes and a 48% reduction in overall crashes.

fter years of planning, anticipation and hard work, the city of Holmes Beach has officially reopened the Grassy Point Preserve, an important wetland preserve that is the biggest parcel of undeveloped land in the city. Over the years, the city has done extensive work at the preserve. Projects have included the removal of invasive and exotic plants and trees, along with the reintroduction of native plants and trees, such as southern red cedars, cabbage palms, sea oats, sea grapes and marsh grass. In recent months, improvements to the preserve have included the construction of a boardwalk that extends through the wetlands and mangroves and ends with a view of Anna Maria Sound. Projects also included the regrading of existing shell pathways.

{

The city acquired the 34-acre preserve in 2001, thanks to a nearly $360,000 grant from the State of Florida. The city also received grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Southwest Florida Water Management District to aid in the clean up and preservation of the land.

n the ongoing battle over the possible dredging of Big Pass in order to use the sand to renourish a mile-and-a-half stretch of beach on Lido Key, neither side is willing to back down. Over the past several months, the Siesta Key Association and individual Siesta Key residents have filed lawsuits to halt or at least slow down the permitting process for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ project. Their contention has been that the project is not consistent with Sarasota County’s comprehensive plan, and that the county would have to approve such a project before the state permit could be granted. However, in the latest development to pause the process while the case is heard in circuit court, Florida Administrative Law Judge Bram D.E. Canter ruled against the Sand Key Association’s argument, saying there was too much ambiguity in how the county’s comprehensive plan is worded

In Brief Holmes Beach police warn of burglary scam HOLMES BEACH - Police in Holmes Beach are warning residents about a burglary scam in the city, where people dress up as landscapers, knock on a resident’s door and ask for access to their backyard in order to finish a job. While the resident is at the front door, an accomplice generally enters the home via the back door and steals cash and other small valuables. If you notice any suspicious activity, call police at 941-708-COPS. Siesta Breeze Trolley kills it in first month SIESTA KEY - The numbers are in for the Siesta Key Trolley. According to Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT), the new trolley service provided rides to more than 25,000 in its first two weeks of operation. SCAT officials see this as a big help

in regard to beach renourishment, and also that there is no evidence that the county would or would not approve such a project. Big Pass has never been dredged before, so Siesta Key residents are concerned that any alteration of the natural flow of sand and water will negatively impact Siesta’s shoreline and world-famous thus impacting tourism and home values, among other things. The administrative law case is scheduled to be heard in August.

By Scott Lancaster in relieving traffic and parking issues in Siesta Key, but they are now faced with finding funding to expand the service beyond the original six-month pilot program that is slated to end in September. The goal of both SCAT and the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce is to continue to offer the trolley as a free service to riders, so SCAT officials say they are prepared to be creative when it comes to funding the trolley past September. LBK police still on lookout for hit-and-run driver LONGBOAT KEY - Longboat Key police are still on the lookout for a hitand-run driver who nearly killed a Canadian bicyclist earlier this month on Gulf of Mexico Drive. Witnesses say the driver may have been driving a white truck. If you have any information, call Longboat police at 941-316-1977.

Dining Feature French Table

The best food this side of France

S

o listen up, my dear readers. I am asking you to go, no, I take that back. I am demanding that you check out the French Table in Bradenton Beach and let me tell you why. It has new owners and first of all, they are the nicest family from the South of France. Hey, I barely know where Alabama is, but I hear the South of France is an amazing place. But what the Celis have found out very quickly is what WE Americans like and expect, which I assume is no different what than their local Frenchmen expect, which is perfection. And my friends, they deliver just that. Starting with the front of the house. Mom and wife Marieke runs the front with the family's two very pleasant daughters. They triple team you on service and do a great job. Marieke's smile is contagious and her daughters appear to share in the passion of the restaurant. But they're kids. I don't get it. My kids barely have a pulse. But that's another story, and not for another day. Back to the French Table. In the rear of the house, the man at the helm and on the line is no one other than dad and husband Chef Christophe, who

cut his teeth at a young age, learning from his mother and grandmother before later honing his skills as an adult. He has mastered the art of the culinary and not only bakes his own bread every morning, but also adds his signature to all of his dishes. He is a true chef and craftsman. I am sure you will love the quaint and charming atmosphere, but also the overall feel of the joint. Yes, it's hard to explain but it's so damn comfortable. I started off my evening with a couple of appetizers: the moules gratinees (grilled mussels with French butter, parsley and garlic) and the duo de mer (fresh pancake with smoked salmon, shrimp, crème fraiche, tomatoes, radish

French Table 103 Gulf Drive N. Bradenton Beach 941-779-1930 Tues-Sat, 5-9pm

and sweet pepper). OMG, people, the mussels were to-die-for and equally so was the duo de mer, whatever that means. The salmon was delish, especially in the way the dish was put together. Everything mixed to perfection and I could have eaten the mussels all day. They truly were cooked to perfection. For my main dish(es), I chose the grouper sauce mangue (fresh and, I repeat, fresh grouper sautéed in olive oil, served with fresh pieces of mango, rice and fresh vegetables, with a mango-lemonorange sauce) and the magret de canard aumiel, which was duck breast sautéed in olive oil and served with honey sauce, gratin of potatoes and fresh vegetables. Both the grouper and the duck were

incredible. Chef Christophe definitely expressed his innermost culinary passion and talents on these dishes. Other items on the menu include the French Table's signature French onion soup, beef marinated in red wine, chicken breast sautéed in oil and served with a creamy sauce, a slow cooked casserole with duck leg and pork sausage and fresh shrimp, among others. Flan, mousse and crème brulee are a few of the desserts that are offered. Yes, bon appetit is spot on! The place is warm and it's so telling that it is owned by a lovely French family who has come to our beautiful country to share their passion. You will absolutely love the French Table, from the atmosphere, the amazing service and some of the best food on this side of France. Hey, it sounded right. Check it out. You will love it.
