Holiday Lights proves to be a crowd-pleaser year after year

H

oliday lights are shining bright in Largo again this year. The 18th annual Holiday Lights in the Garden at Florida Botanical Gardens is in full-swing, thanks to the good folks at the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation and the Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources department.

New this year is expanded pathways and displays following the Botanical Gardens’ recently opened Wetlands Walkway. All-in-all, the various Holiday Lights displays feature over one million twinkling, colorful LED lights of all shapes and sizes.

Each evening of Holiday Lights in the Gardens includes food and beverages.

Fun seasonal items are available from the Botanical Bounty Gift Cart, located on the main plaza, while all types of seasonal gifts and décor are available in the Botanical Bounty Gift Shop, locat-

In Brief St. Pete teen arrested for posting school threat on Snapchat ST. PETERSBURG - Deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested 18-year-old Hanlin Majewski and charged her with one count of Threatening Communications or Threats of Mass Shootings after she posted school threats on her Snapchat account.

According to deputies, a citizen contacted the Sheriff’s Office regarding a photograph on Snapchat of a male subject in a black tactical vest pointing a black handgun at the camera with a caption at the bottom that said “don’t come to school tomorrow.”

Majewski admitted that she took the photograph and typed the caption before posting it. She said the photograph was a picture of her boyfriend’s 17-year-old brother holding a fake gun and that she meant no harm.

Deputies recovered the tactical vest and the airsoft BB gun that were seen in the picture. The boy’s parents informed deputies that he does not have access to any other firearms.

PETERSBURG - The City of St. Petersburg will be holding an open house to present the Complete Streets Implementation Plan recommendations. This meeting will allow an opportunity to see an overview of the plan and provide input on the recommendations before the plan is finalized. uch to some residents’ chagrin, the Belleair Bluffs City Commission recently unanimously approved an ordinance that will allow real estate developer Ric Feinberg to build townhouses on lots that have multi-family structures on them.

Two of the parcels in question are located at 2325 Belmar Dr. and 2696 Jewel Rd. The plan is to build a twofamily townhouse on each property to replace the aging duplexes that currently occupy the lots.

In order to move forward with the townhouses, the commission had to change the city code to allow the “nonconforming” properties, which do not meet the current lot size requirements for multi-family buildings, to remain nonconforming, basically grandfathering in any two- or three-family dwelling to be redeveloped regardless of current lot size requirements.

The revised code states: “Sites that

contain legally existing, nonconforming two-family or three-family dwellings may be redeveloped or subdivided as two-unit or three-unit townhouses notwithstanding the minimum area requirements of this district as long as the total number of proposed townhouse dwelling units will not exceed the existing number of dwelling units on the site.”

Some residents have expressed concern about the projects, wanting to keep the “quaintness” of the community while also questioning the availability of parking and the fact that the city is changing the existing code to benefit one developer.

According to Commissioner Suzy Sofer, the townhouses will only be permitted in zoning areas where duplexes or triplexes currently exist. Feinberg and several other commissioners noted that the construction of the upscale townhouses will only serve to enhance the city and increase property values.

In Brief Pinellas County continues to rake in tourism dollars CLEARWATER - According to Visit St. Pete-Clearwater President and CEO David Downing, Pinellas County’s bed tax collections for fiscal year 20172018 came in at $59.7 million, an increase of 9 percent over last year, something Downing called an “extraordinary achievement.”

The Tourist Development Tax - or bed tax - is a 6 percent tax collected on all room rentals in addition to the total rental amount.

January and September were the only months out of the year that were slightly down, .59 percent and .2 percent respectively. The downtick in September was likely attributable to Hurricane Michael and the red tide epidemic.

Muralists bring the heat

Work is in process to tranform the look of downtown Clearwater with a series of murals.

T

he walls of downtown Clearwater are in the process of being transformed. The city's Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has hired five teams of muralists to convert five buildings by adding majestic colors and artistic designs that will enhance and enrich downtown Clearwater for years to come. In partnership with downtown property owners, the CRA has commissioned murals that tell the story of downtown Clearwater’s past, present and future from different points of view.

After receiving more than 100 applications from local, domestic and international muralists, the organization

chose the final artists last summer.

Three are from Tampa Bay, one is from Gainesville, and one team is from Uruguay. The muralists began their work last month and will continue through December. The goal is to complete all the murals by the end of January. The budget for each mural ranges from $5,000 - $20,000 depending on the size and complexity of the artwork.

Four of the buildings are privately owned, and one building is owned by the city of Clearwater. The city's CRA staff worked with the Downtown Development Board, the Public Art and Design Board, the property owners and

the artists to collaborate and choose unique mural designs.

“The murals will not only improve the visual appearance of downtown, but they will celebrate the nuance, complexity and diversity that exists among the residents and businesses here,” said Amanda Thompson, the city’s CRA director.

The following buildings were selected to receive the murals: Garden Street Parking Garage, 28 N. Garden Ave.; The Flag Company, 1360 Cleveland St.; Creative Contractors (trail side), 620 Drew St.; the commercial building at 512 Cleveland St.; and Clearwater Tower Parking Garage (facing Station Square Park), located at 33 N. • Florencia Durán and Camilo Nuñez of Uruguay are painting the mural at the city's Garden Avenue Garage.They have painted murals in capital cities and in small towns all over the world.

• The Tampa-based husband-and-wife team of Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol of Tampa are working on the mural at Creative Contractors. They work together under the name Illsol to produce large murals with bold lines.

• Cecilia Lueza of St. Petersburg is painting the mural at the commercial property located at 512 Cleveland St. Lueza is an Argentinian-born visual artist who is known for her vibrant public art pieces.

• Julia Morrisroe of Gainesville, Fla., is working on the mural at Clearwater Tower Parking Garage. It will cover several stories of the parking garage.

Morrisroe is an associate professor in painting and drawing at the University of Florida.

he media reports 1,000 people a day move to Florida. The actual number is closer to 257,000 a year, or just over 1,000 per weekday. Pinellas is the sixth most populated county in Florida, yet we are only selling around 800 properties a month. Many second-home buyers are included in the 800. The best state to live in just keeps drawing more and more residents, full or parttime. Demand will ensure prices continue to rise faster than inflation.

The typical buyer, full-time or parttime, wants a move-in-ready home with no hassles - no updates, no repairs. Investors will buy a property in need of love to update and sell for a profit.

If a house isn't selling quickly, either the agent promised more than they can deliver, or the seller is demanding

a price that the market will not pay.

Many homes need updates but are priced as if the work has already been done. When a for-sale sign remains in front of a property for an extended period, the reason is usually price or condition.

We have far more buyers than we have properties that match their needs.

Any property in good condition and priced near market value sells quickly.

or two or three months prior to a presidential election, real estate sales slow to a crawl.

It’s simply a reaction to not knowing what’s coming next.

Several weeks back, activity slowed during a mid-term election. Most unusual, but so is Mueller, the caravan and the Democrats saying they may start impeachment proceedings when they control the house.

On a positive note, employment is under 4 percent and the lowest ever for minorities and women. GDP has exceeded 4 percent for a quarter.

Money is returning from overseas and being invested in the U.S. Salaries are running 2.8 percent ahead of a year ago. Over four million are off food stamps, and there is a boom in small business startups. A strong economy causes interest rates

Assume you were under 40. Your peers have seen two Iraq wars, a real estate bubble and 3.5 percent mortgage rates. As parents and grandparents, we recognize 6 percent as a historic norm for mortgages. Young people have never experienced rates at this level. The under-30 group has committed to home ownership at a higher rate than ever before, with women leading the way. They are only one Iraq war short of the 40year-old crowd.

ing will be in a flux until well after the election. If Nancy Pelosi wins Speaker, things will settle quickly. If someone else is Speaker and impeachment efforts start, all bets are off.

Being an optimist, I assume cooler heads will prevail and all will return to normal after the new year. However, if impeachment starts, you will see a country divided, and the future is anybody's guess.
