Largo planning plastic ban By Sandra Nickless

T

he city of St. Peterburg’s twophased single-use plastic straw and Styrofoam ban that went into effect Jan. 1 has city officials in Largo pondering the possibility of following the environmental lead of the Sunshine City. Largo commissioners recently voted 6-1 to approve the first reading of an ordinance that would ban single-use plastics, such as straws and utensils, and Styrofoam cups and containers, on city property and at city-sponsored functions. The final vote is scheduled for Jan. 22. The new ordinance, which is expected to pass, would go into effect July 1. While the ordinance would not apply to businesses that do not operate on city property, commissioners were hopeful that local business owners

would take the iniative to stop using items of this nature on their own. Vice Mayor John Carroll said he could get on board with the ordinance because “this is something we’re imposing on ourselves and not the community. So if we’re going to lead by example, I’m OK with that.” Commissioners also discussed the need to reduce littering in the city, with Commissioner Curtis Holmes, the lone dissenting vote, saying he wasn’t actually opposed to the ban, but feels the need to clean up plastic litter and other trash should be addressed first. Commissioner Samantha Fenger said, “We’re acting as a catalyst to what we want to see in a better environment and what we can control, because there are many things we can’t control.”

Pinellas ranked best place in Florida to save for retirement By Sandra Nickless

A

a recent study by financial advising company Smartasset ranked Pinellas County as the best place in Florida to save for retirement. The study focused on four factors in every county to determine their findings: a paycheck friendliness score, 401(k) plan performance score, public pension plan performance score and a score for the number of financial advisors per capita. Other factors included which counties allowed individuals to keep most of their paycheck; purchasing power; unemployment and income growth. These aspects were then calculated over a five-year period to take into account the annual growth in median income year over year.

In Brief Text-to-911 available in Pinellas County PINELLAS COUNTY - Citizens who cannot place a call to 911 in an emergency now have the alternative option to text for police, fire or medical response. The new text-to-911 capability was announced last month at the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners meeting. Texts should only be used under circumstances when callers are unable to call for help. Calling 911 is still the best way to share information with emergency telecommunicators for a quick response. Those who use text-to-911 should remember the following tips before sending a message: • Always call 911 if you can; text the

City planners say the North Marina Area Master Plan balances the needs of the boating community, residents and developers by:

By Daniel Holloway

The North Marina Area Master Plan is a go, with the goal of creating a new waterfront destination.

A

fter almost five years of planning and resident feedback, the city of Clearwater is moving forward with a $65 million project to transform the North Marina/Seminole Boat Ramp area with new green space, improved parking, new stormwater treatment, a bike path to the waterfront, elevated restrooms, new floating docks and a waterfront promenade. According to Clearwater Planning and Development Director Michael Delk, the city envisions this area to be a waterfront destination for both residents and visitors, with businesses and other amenities that will serve to enhance the

public’s access to Clearwater’s number one asset: the water. “This is going to be a place for the public to gather right along the waterfront,” said Delk. At a previous community informational meeting, Delk also discussed additional improvements to the Seminole Boat Ramp, including lighting, landscaping and parking. “The city’s investments in the Seminole Boat Launch will improve the operations of this important access point while also adding more green space and waterfront access,” Delk said. “These are all things residents asked for as part of the North Marina

Area Master Plan process. We are building community in the North Marina area, and this is going to be a cornerstone in this process.” The city is currently preparing construction documents and anticipates beginning construction on the upgrades to the Seminole Boat Ramp soon. The improvements to this area are estimated to be completed by the fall of 2019. The North Marina Master Plan district consists of 55 acres just north of downtown Clearwater. The city approved the Plan in 2016 after a 2014 study identified the area for possible improvements.

1. Protecting views of the water and bluff 2. Improving connectivity to downtown Clearwater 3. Creating a waterfront destination 4. Enhancing the area’s unique character 5. Putting people first 6. Establishing a cultural hub 7. Promoting a better environment 8. Unlocking development potential

In Brief Toy bomb at PSCO did not go over well LARGO - A veteran patrol deputy with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office recently resigned his position after admitting to mailing a toy bomb to a sheriff’s lieutenant as a “joke,” causing an evacuation at the Sheriff’s Administration Building, located at 10750 Ulmerton Rd., Largo. According to investigators, Lieutenant Joseph Gerretz was in his office at the Sheriff’s Administration Building when he received a package through inner-office mail. Upon opening the box, Gerretz reported seeing a handwritten note that said “Boom” and a red cylindrical object with protruding wires. He immediately vacated his office and made notification of the potential threat.

Courtesy PCSO

A PCSO handler with a K-9 bomb detection dog was called to the scene. The K-9 did not alert to the suspicious package, so members of the Tampa Police Department Bomb Team also responded and confirmed that the device was not a threat. When he heard about all of this ruckus, Deputy James Piper contacted his supervisor and informed him that he had sent the package to Gerretz as a joke. Piper immediately resigned his position and was arrested the next day for planting a hoax bomb, a second-degree felony. The Roe Report By Cliff Roe Broker/Owner Roe Realty

T

he media reports 1,000 people a day move to Florida. The actual number is closer to 257,000 a year, or just over 1,000 per weekday. Pinellas is the sixth most populated county in Florida, yet we are only selling around 800 properties a month. Many second-home buyers are included in the 800. The best state to live in just keeps drawing more and more residents, full or parttime. Demand will ensure prices continue to rise faster than inflation. The typical buyer, full-time or parttime, wants a move-in-ready home with no hassles - no updates, no repairs. Investors will buy a property in need of love to update and sell for a profit. If a house isn't selling quickly, either the agent promised more than they can deliver, or the seller is demanding

a price that the market will not pay. Many homes need updates but are priced as if the work has already been done. When a for-sale sign remains in front of a property for an extended period, the reason is usually price or condition. We have far more buyers than we have properties that match their needs. Any property in good condition and priced near market value sells quickly. Due to the shortage of properties listed for sale, we can scan new listings or price reductions in an hour or less per day. We do our best to match the buyers with a home that will suit their needs. Our most successful approach is to show a property to a buyer who has expressed no interest in it but has described many of the needs this property fulfills. We don't simply think of our-

selves as agents buying or selling properties. We believe our job is to solve problems for both buyers and sellers. We offer a free evaluation to anyone considering selling - all you must do is ask. The full version of the Roe Report goes out quarterly with prices and inventory broken down by price point. For a copy, send me an email with Roe Report in the subject line. Roe Rentals needs properties since

we have far more opportunities than we can fill. Call 727-456-8911 for information. My staff and agents are highly qualified, which allows me to help those who need it. Just give me (727-6447209) or Rebekah (727-385-5233) a call and schedule a time. Or, you can email me at Cliff@Roe-Realty.com. Sincerely,

Is your door hard to open? Don’t Replace,

Making the most out of the space you have is important whether your house is small or large or somewhere in between. More Space Place is here to help.

I have a problem finding places to store things. I really need to get organized!” Does that sound like you at all? Organizing is about decluttering and arranging your home or office space in more efficient and beneficial ways. So stop storing everything in your garage or piling up your clothes and shoes and make a decision to get everything in order. It will make you feel so much better, I can promise you! More Space Place offers an extensive array of custom-built furniture specifically designed with your home and organizational needs in mind. They provide attractive, affordable and functional solutions that will help you get organized and create more space within your home without the hassle of a home remodel, a costly addition or an outside storage unit. More Space Place's numerous products include custom closets, home office furniture and organizational systems, Murphy wall beds, garage systems and kitchen organization solutions.

Starting off as a single retail location in the early 1980's, More Space Place has grown to become a nationally recognized and trusted company that continues to expand due to their high level of attentive customer service and quality organizational products. Today, the company has 28 nationwide stores that are locally owned and operated by community members. Clark Williams and Bob Schmidt are the owners of the three Tampa Bay area showrooms and Design Centers, conveniently located in Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg and Lutz. “We have seen some very innovative designs created when a client comes in with an idea and our designers work with them to make it a reality. It makes the business both fun and exciting,” said Williams. Custom furniture may sound expensive, but with today's technology and computerized woodworking equipment, that is no longer the case. Personalized furniture is now available at very affordable prices and

The Roe Report

F

or two or three months prior to a presidential election, real estate sales slow to a crawl. It’s simply a reaction to not knowing what’s coming next. Several weeks back, activity slowed during a mid-term election. Most unusual, but so is Mueller, the caravan and the Democrats saying they may start impeachment proceedings when they control the house. On a positive note, employment is under 4 percent and the lowest ever for minorities and women. GDP has exceeded 4 percent for a quarter. Money is returning from overseas and being invested in the U.S. Salaries are running 2.8 percent ahead of a year ago. Over four million are off food stamps, and there is a boom in small business startups. A strong economy causes interest rates

to rise as the demand for money heats up. Canada, Mexico and South Korea have agreed to new tariffs. The U.K., EU and Japan are making concessions while the squeeze is being felt by China. Things are looking good, but!!! Assume you were under 40. Your peers have seen two Iraq wars, a real estate bubble and 3.5 percent mortgage rates. As parents and grandparents, we recognize 6 percent as a historic norm for mortgages. Young people have never experienced rates at this level. The under-30 group has committed to home ownership at a higher rate than ever before, with women leading the way. They are only one Iraq war short of the 40year-old crowd. I believe the stock market and hous-

ing will be in a flux until well after the election. If Nancy Pelosi wins Speaker, things will settle quickly. If someone else is Speaker and impeachment efforts start, all bets are off. Being an optimist, I assume cooler heads will prevail and all will return to normal after the new year. However, if impeachment starts, you will see a country divided, and the future is anybody's guess. If you have any questions or need any real estate assistance, just give me, (727) 644-7209, or Rebekah, (727) 385-5233, a call. Or, you can email me at Cliff@Roe-Realty.com. Sincerely,

Cliff
