Plans for Siesta Promenade moving forward

LBK closing in on underground utility bids LONGBOAT KEY - The final phase in the seemingly never-ending saga of the undergrounding of utilities in Longboat Key is one step closer to fruition. The Town has accepted proposals from six companies to complete the undergrounding of all remaining utilities. A Jan. 11 meeting of the selection committee will narrow that number down to three, and the final three will be expected to present bids to the Town on Feb. 2. Longboat Key Town Manager David Bullock will be tasked with awarding the job to the best suited candidate. At that time, LBK residents will be informed of the amount they will be assessed to pay for the project.

Developer prepares to finalize plans for mixed-use development, despite huge opposition from residents. Scott Lancaster

A

t the corner of Stickney Point Road and U.S. 41 lies a 24acre parcel of land, once the site of a trailer park, that Benderson Development Co. hopes to reinvent as an impressive gateway to Siesta Key. The proposal by Benderson is a mixed-use development that includes 150 hotel rooms, around 500 condo units, including a row of townhouses, and 140,000 square feet of commercial space, with a possible height of up to eight stories. But all of this is reliant on a density increase by the county, from 13 to 25 units per acre.

The proposal has been scaled down from one that was unveiled in 2014, but residents are still concerned about traffic problems in the area, including added congestion on the bridge to Siesta Key. Despite assurances from Benderson representatives that they are going to build a development that will only enhance the area, local residents remain skeptical and have repeatedly urged the developer to further scale back the project. Benderson is currently in the process of applying for a Critical Area Plan study, which would allow for a higher

density. In addition to other requirements, the CAP application involves conducting a study regarding the impact of the project on local traffic, its use of utilities and public land and other parameters. A final list of the CAP application requirements will be provided to Benderson this month. Those in favor of the project say it will only add a favorable and convenient lodging option for those looking to visit Siesta Key. If approved, Benderson maintains the project will only benefit local residents.

1-800-ASK-GARY wants to build a hotel on Siesta Key SIESTA KEY - Siesta Key resident and founder of 1-800-ASK-GARY, Gary Kompothecras, wants to build a hotel on Siesta Key, and several residents are already gearing up for a fight. Although Kompothecras’ planners were short on details at a public meeting last month, one thing is for sure: he will need a density increase to move forward, and that’s something most Key residents aren’t likely to embrace

Cover Story City looks for Siesta Key traffic solutions Sarasota county and city officials are finalizing deals to bring shuttles and trolleys to downtown and Siesta. Timothy Anderson

I

n response to more and more complaints about traffic congestion in downtown Sarasota and on Siesta Key, city and county officials are wrapping up deals that will soon bring new free and/or inexpensive modes of transit to those areas. Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) officials are currently sorting bids to bring an open-air trolley service to Siesta Key. The proposal will provide trolley service between Siesta Key Village to Turtle Beach, with several stops in each direction. The Siesta Key Association and Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce have been lobbying for years for a trolley service to help alleviate traffic on the key. The current plan will implement a classic trolley service similar to the Jolley Trolley that is used in Clearwater Beach. Siesta’s trolley will likely run about half of the year, during the area’s busy season. For downtown Sarasota, city planners are finalizing a deal with an electric shuttle operator called Gotcha Ride. Gotcha Ride would offer free rides throughout downtown, via the electric

shuttles that could be summoned via an app. They currently offer free shuttle services primarily on university campuses in the southeast, including at the University of Florida. The proposed contract with Gotcha Ride would provide up to nine electric vehicles, each with seating for six. The city of Sarasota is willing to provide $548,000 over the next two years to launch this venture. This seed money will be used to establish the initial operations, as well as provide for the shuttles and chargers and parking at the Palm Avenue parking garage. If successful after the two-year trial period, Gotcha Ride will take over the funding of the operation by selling advertising on the vehicles, which is how the company currently supports its fleet of free rides. The hope is to have both shuttle services up and running in February. The goal of both programs is simply to encourage both visitors and locals to leave their cars in one location and utilitize the convenient trolleys to reduce the area’s traffic and parking nightmares.

Anna Maria ponders fate of historic pier City needs $2 million to refurbish Historic Anna Maria City Pier.

lmost everyone would agree the Historic Anna Maria City Pier is a quaint, “Old Florida” attraction for the city, and has been for over 100 years. However, it’s an expensive one to maintain, and city officials are pondering the best way to obtain the $2 million that has been deemed necessary for the reburbishment of the structure. A 2015 city study recommended two options for the pier: the $2 million refurbishment proposal, or a complete reconstruction of the structure within five years. Almost a year ago, the Anna Maria City Commission voted to repair the pier and entered into talks with Mario Schoenfelder, who currently holds a lease for the pier and the City Pier Restaurant there, on how to fund the necessary repairs. Schoenfelder initially offered to pony up $500,000 towards the repairs if the city agreed to extend his lease for an additonal 10 years, and also offer him compensation for the time the restau-

rant would be closed during the repairs. This didn’t sit very well with the city, who claimed Schoenfelder didn’t keep up his responsibilties as a leaseholder, and the negotiations were closed in May 2016, with no solution for the funding. Fast forward to now, and the city and Schoenfelder are again amenable to working together to figure out the funding. Manatee County has also tentatively agreed to chip in up to $1 million and will submit a formal offer by February. Schoenfelder’s lease with the city is currently set to expire in 2020.

A main component of the renovations includes constructing separate male and female sleeping quarters and facilities, which the stations currently do not have. Both will also be fortified to withstand a Category 4 hurricane. The town commission is expected to look at the plans at its Jan. 23 workshop.

Dining Feature Blasé Café & Martini Bar Siesta Key’s compound

Y

es, let me be the 1000th person to tell you how cool The Blasé Café and Martini Bar really is. But before I do so, ugh, I used to hate it when teachers would do that, nevermind…. I searched for a cool place do this month's Dining Feature, but nothing was sticking out for me. One after another overpriced seafood joint. Hey, I love seafood but I'm not willing to be gouged over it. So when I stumbled into the Blasé Café and Martini Bar, I was like, damn, this place is not only extremely cool and relaxing but it has one hell of a menu with reasonable pricing. At this point, I was like, hey, throw me a decent burger and count me in. But as I opened the door of what I am calling "the compound," it was like walking into an artist's dream. Why? Because Cindy, the owner is not only a culinary genius but she is also one hell of an artist. Truthfully, I didn't get into her story. I just know what I saw and tasted and I loved it. The interior of the restaurant is calming and relaxing, all sectioned off into different areas. One section appeared to be more of a fine dining

restaurant and another was a casual bar area. A clever and cool mix. The outside tables along the sidewalk are nothing to brag about, but the main center stage for live entertainment is very cool. It was located between the Blasé Café and 3.14 Pi Craft Beer & Spirits, also owned by Cindy. The first thing I did on my arrival was glance at the menu. Wow. A very, very good menu, with burgers like the jalapeno burger and the BBQ bacon burger, which I had and loved, to tapas, salads, and items such as potato encrusted black grouper, the Blasé jambalaya, steak gorgonzola, and the list goes on.

Blasé Cafe & Martini Bar 5263 Ocean Blvd. Siesta Key 941-349-9822

In addition to the BBQ bacon burger, I ordered the Blasé Fish Tacos, which is panko encrusted grouper smothered in Blasé's signature sriracha slaw and diced tomatoes on three flour tortillas. Again, the menu is out of this world. You really need to go to their website, theblasecafe.com, and check it out. Kate, my server, was also great. Extremely pleasant and inviting. I felt like

I was eating dinner in my living room. After I placed my order, I wandered around to check out 3.14 Pi Craft Beer & Spirits. I was kind of torn, thinking I should have gone there. It looked awesome. Another time. Back to the Blasé Cafe and Martini Bar. I am very glad I checked it out. My only regret was that I wasn't able to stay and listen to the music. Overall, I loved the place. It was relaxing and the food was very good. I'm looking forward to a return visit. I'll be the guy passing out copies of Beach Scene. Yes, that was a plug. Bon appetite!
