This presidential election, the American people are confronted with a choice between two of the least popular candidates to run for the office. Faced with this choice, many of us are still undecided. With this in mind, I want to look at some of the reasons for this difficult decision.

ll candidates flip-flop on issues and all candidates "adjust positions," but this election has seen a lot of adjustment from both sides. Most obvious to me has been Mrs. Clinton's shift from the start of the campaign until now. Early on, she wasn't afraid to criticize some of the decisions Obama has made, including but not limited to the Affordable Care Act.

This shift in her position most certainly is related to the potential charges that could be brought against her, as well as an attempt to create a united Democratic Party in light of the DNC hack revelations. This shift brings her conviction into question, as well as her intelligence and judgment.

On the other hand, we have the toughtalking, no-nonsense Mr. Trump. He says some of the right things, in the most idiotic, offensive way possible. Then again, he also says a lot of frightening things. We've all wondered how he will make Mexico pay for that wall. Cut off all trade and banking with the country?

Well, we now still face the same choice between the lesser of two evils. I question Mrs. Clinton's judgment in using her server and her honesty concerning the extent of its use. I question Mr. Trump's reliance on the cult of personality and his willful ignorance.

For me, it's the fear factor guiding my decision. I say, better the devil you know than the one you don't. This conservative is voting Clinton.

In the world of lily-white realtors, insert Sabrina Nova.

I

recently asked realtor Sabrina Nova if she's ever watched Bravo's Million Dollar Listing New York, must-see TV for all realtors, in my opinion. She has not seen the show. I then asked if she calls on "For Sale By Owner" properties to try to get listings.

Her answer was: "I don't like it when people call and solicit me, so I don't want to do it to FSBOs either."

Fair enough, I thought. But don't you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to succeed in a hostile and vicious industry? Well, yes and no.

After sitting down with Sabrina, I learned of her creative game plan and, truthfully, the intelligence of a woman who not only has an extremely clever strategy but also the drive to execute it.

Sabrina Nova, who's licensed as Sabrina Tropf with Luxury & Beach Realty, comes from a real estate family that's rich in tradition. Her grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, launched East

West Realty in Clearwater along with a partner. And as a result of the two men's immense drive, it would later explode into an extremely successful real estate company in Tampa Bay. Sabrina was surrounded by the dayto-day bump and grind of her grandfather's real estate company, but also by her ex-husband's real estate career.

"In some form, I've been around it all my life," said Nova.

It is now her turn to carry on the family tradition her grandfather created, and Sabrina Nova is doing it her way, with a vengeance.

"I want my customers to know that I will take care of them and look out for their best interests,� said Nova. "I want anyone going through a tough time in the housing market to know that I can help."

Something else Nova has been through are years of success in sales.

Nova is not what you would expect to see from a Harbor Bluffs or Belleairbased realtor. Tattooed, she is a motorcycle enthusiast. She's a member of a female riders’ club out of St. Petersburg called the Two Wheeled Foxies, and she's also a motorcycle stuntwoman who spent years learning the talent.

But for Nova, who grew up in Pinellas County, it's all about taking care of her clients' best interests.

"I want them to be very happy at the end of the transaction. I'm willing to go the extra mile for them in any shape or form. I know the market. I spend endless nights checking inventory, I know what is available," said Nova.

"I don't ever give up. I know it's a very tough business but it's the perfect business for me. I love a challenge!"

A

federal civil rights complaint recently filed against Pinellas County Schools and the Pinellas County School Board by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) alleges that the school district subjects black students and students with disabilites to disproportionate arrests and restraints such as pepper spray for instances of common misbehavior.

According to the complaint, black students within the district are four times more likely to be arrested than white students, while students with disabilities are almost three times as likely to be arrested than students without disabilities.

The complaint recounts the story of two male honor roll students at Richard L. Sanders School who were arrested this year after trying to stop another male student from attacking their female friend. Instead of using de-escalation measures, the responding officer pepper-sprayed one student and charged both with disorderly conduct. The charges were later dismissed, but the inci-

dent left them with a criminal arrest record.

“The police practices endanger the lives and futures of students by subjecting them to excessive force and saddling them with criminal records for adolescent misbehavior.

We’re urging the federal government to take action to protect students,” said SPLC attorney Amir Whitaker.

In fact, Pinellas students are more than 20 times as likely to be arrested for disorderly conduct as students in Miami-Dade Public Schools, the district reporting the most fights in the state.

o you remember where you were on Jan. 30, 2012, a day that will live in infamy: the day construction began on Ulmerton Road?

Nearly five years later, we are still bitterly embroiled with the Florida Department of Transportation over the state of the road, although according to FDOT spokesperson, Kris Carson, the end is in sight.

The ferry’s a go-go After years of discussion and obstacles, a passenger ferry with service between St. Pete and Tampa will soon be a reality.

ST. PETERSBURG - For St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman, it looks like persistence is going to pay off. At least temporarily.

Pinellas County recently approved an agreement that will provide for ferry service between the Vinoy Basin in downtown St. Petersburg and the Tampa Convention Center in downtown Tampa for a six-month pilot program. The plan was originally spearheaded by Kriseman and needed approval from Pinellas and Hillsborough counties and the cities of Tampa and St. Pete. Pinellas County was the final entity to sign off on the trial plan.

The pilot program is expected to cost $1.4 million, but before Pinellas taxpayers get too riled up about it, commissioners have been quick to point out that the county’s portion of the cost, $350,000, will be paid for with funds from a $7.5 million settlement from the BP oil spill.

Pinellas County Commissioner Dave Eggers was the sole dissenter in the county’s vote, saying the plan is “high risk,” but also congratulating Kriseman on his ability to put it all together with four different governmental bodies.

According to Kriseman, this six-month program will give local officials a chance to see if they can utilize water-based transportation as an alternative to the area’s nonstop traffic and commuting problems.

He has considered the ferry service a top priority.

In addition to their portion of the $1.4 million, the St. Pete City Council has also earmarked $50,000 for a ticket booth, signage and other upgrades to the ferry terminal.

HMS Ferries will operate the service seven days a week, using a 98-foot boat that is capable of speeds up to 30 knots. The ferry will be able carry up to 149 passengers and 30 bikes on board, and will also serve food and drinks during the estimated 45-minute travel time between ports. The boat should be arriving in St. Pete by mid-October and service is slated to start on Nov. 1.

One-way tickets are expected to cost around $10, but the governments involved are still talking about fee discounts for commuters and other regular users of the service.

The current agreement will pay HMS Ferries the first $125,000 of profits, with anything over that being divided between the four governing bodies. When the program expires on April 30, officials will then decide if it is feasible to keep the service going. They have already made it clear the endeavor needs to support itself, without the benefit of taxpayers’ dollars.

But are they all good?

eah, I know, you never have a question in a sub-header, but that is the great thing about an alternative newspaper: we are allowed to bend the rules.

Moving on.

For those of you whose playground is the Belleair/Belleair Bluffs area, you have surely noticed that a handful of coffee shops have recently sprung up like fresh weeds. OK, daisies in the spring.

So what gives? Is there something we don't know? Is there a feeding frenzy in Belleair Bluffs for caffeine? Perhaps a need for great wireless internet, or a special meeting place for you and your lover or business colleague or bridge partner?

Never mind.

Regardless of the reason why so many baristas have decided to plant roots in the affluent, and yes, a touch pretentious, area of Belleair Bluffs, we decided to take a look at each coffee bean joint.

1) Panera Bread - Probably my least favorite but the masses' most favorite.

OK, maybe the masses is a stretch.

Panera Bread doesn't have bad coffee but not great either. I hate the atmosphere. I know, hate is a strong word but it's full of, mmmm, I don't know. I just hate

the clientele, or customerle. Hey, it's a word now. As far as for a coffee joint, I would give it a D. It's for the older folks.

There I said it.

2) Belleair Coffee Company - Brand spankin' new out of the gate. A couple of pencil pushers from Raymond James opened the joint. Both seem like super nice guys but also know the background of the barista industry. They have done a kick ass job on the interior but it is a tad large and not quite the cozy feeling I crave. It's a perfect place for larger business groups. I even saw a baby shower taking place the day I stopped in for a cup of java. The coffee is good but they are not roasters so they buy from coffee a distributor. Overall, I would give it a B. 3) Astoria Pastry Shop - Before you ride my ass for including a pastry shop, I must defend myself because they not only serve coffee but they also have a great outside courtyard ideal for some me time or to get some work done. Their coffee comes from Clearwater-based Melitta. It's OK but then again, let's not forget, they are a pastry shop. I kinda like the joint.

The Rowe Bar Cool cocktails and coastal cuisine

don't know what it is, but I love eating and staying at really nice hotels. Hey, who doesn't? What was I ever thinking, to stay at a Motel 6 back during my road jaunts as a youngster? Jaunt: A short excursion or journey for pleasure. In the event you didn't think jaunt was a word. But, I mean, really, Motel 6?

Yuck! Yes, I am a very big hotel snob.

There are very few things that I am a snob about but hotels are at the top of the list.

And just as important are the restaurants and bars inside these very nice hotels. I had a gym membership at the Sand Key Sheraton for over a decade that not only allowed my family and me access to the gym, but also to the tennis courts, the pool and, yes, the restaurants and bars. It wasn't until later that I realized that many, if not all, of these nicer hotels along the beach not only allow locals to frequent their restaurants and bars, but they encourage it.

Thomas Rowe's Don CeSar Hotel, known as the very fitting "Pink Palace," opened on Jan. 16, 1928, with an extravagant party attended by Tampa and St. Petersburg's elite. The hotel quickly became a favorite stomping ground for the rich

and famous of the Jazz Age, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clarence Darrow, Al Capone, Lou Gehrig and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Pink Palace continued to attract the rich and famous throughout the Great Depression, thanks in part to a deal with New York Yankees owner, Jacob Ruppert, to house his team there during spring training for three years.

Fast forward to today and the Loews Don CeSar Hotel has honored its developer and founder, Thomas Rowe, by naming its newest bar and restaurant after him. The Rowe Bar is a sleek restaurant bar, sharing interior and

exterior space to offer the most breathtaking sunsets right on the Gulf of Mexico. Simply spectacular.

Yes, the interior is nice and comfortable, but we don't go to the beach to sit inside, so I insist you go to The Rowe Bar to catch a beautiful sunset and enjoy the incredible view of the Gulf of Mexico and the lush and lovely exterior décor. Did I really just use the word lovely?

After learning The Rowe Bar had just opened at the Loews Don CeSar, I had to go check it out. The timing couldn't have been better. I arrived around 5:30, just in time to take it all in and order one of their special "Ades for any Age" cold beverages. I had heard a lot about them so I want to give them a try. I went with the Salted Watermelon. It was delicious, but I'm not stupid; I topped it off with an ice-cold Blue Moon with an orange slice. Ahhh, life is wonderful.

After enjoying both of my beverages, I placed my food order, then sat back and enjoyed the sunset. God, I love our beaches. Hey, I was talking to God, not you.

For dinner, I wanted to experience a couple of different

items, so I went with the Wagyu burger and the ceviche. Both were absolutely spectacular.

A gentleman and his wife dining next to me told me that the calamari was out of this world. Hey, why couldn't they have told me that before I ordered?

Think, people.

In addition, they told me they come once a year from Boston (Go, Rays!) and they stay at the hotel every time.

They said the staff remembers them and warmly greets them. No kidding!

Hello, this is a Loews property. They are the crème de la crème of hotels.

But again, what I think is so cool is that The Rowe Bar welcomes locals and anyone else who wants to experience great food and drinks, and, yes, our beautiful Florida sunsets.

And for lovers of the genre, prepare to be blown away when the Capitol Theatre presents the Third Annual Green Grass & Yule Tide Jam, featuring Southern/country rock legends The Outlaws, The Henry Paul Band and BlackHawk on Friday, Dec. 16 at 8:00 p.m.

Formed in Tampa in 1972, The Outlaws, known for their triple-guitar rock attack and three-part country harmonies, became one of the first acts signed by Clive Davis, at the urging of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant, to his then-fledgling Arista Records.
