Clearwater imagines a new waterfront district

CLEARWATER - The City of Clearwater is looking to revitalize its downtown waterfront area, and recently sought input from residents to help with the vision.

To aid in the process, the city has launched “Imagine Clearwater,” a community-focused visioning and master planning effort for the downtown waterfront and the unique bluff that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway and Clearwater Beach.

The master plan will establish a framework for the future of a 50-acre area west of Osceola Avenue, bordered

by Drew Street to the north and Court Street to the south, including the Coachman Park area.

Over a five-month master planning process, the city will be regularly engaging Clearwater residents to reimagine the future of the downtown waterfront. The city will continue to

No tax hike for Clearwater residents CLEARWATER - The Clearwater City Council has tentatively approved the city’s 2017 fiscal budget, a move that will keep the millage rate at 5.1550 mills. This rate has remained unchanged for eight years.

City Manager Bill Home presented the $468 million budget proposal last month to the city council. A detailed report can be viewed online at myclearwater.com.

The budget should be formally adopted at the Sept. 29 meeting.

BELLEAIR BLUFFS - After plenty of feedback from residents, the City of Largo recently unveiled revised plans for the new Fire Station 43, which will be built across the street from the Belleair Bluffs City Hall.

At the most recent Belleair Bluffs commission meeting, residents and commissioners were still debating the possible exterior finishings for the building.

At a previous meeting, a resident suggested the use of coquina for the exterior, and the plans were revised accordingly. However, many residents were not happy with this decision, and preferred a lower-maintenance brick or stucco.

Residents were also still upset about the possible noise levels that could come from the facility, as well as the idea that properties surrounding the fire station will see a drop in value.

The city will, however, see extra money in its coffers thanks to a 6.5 percent increase in property values over last year.

The new fire station will be built at an estimated cost of $3.2 million. It will provide services for Belleair, Belleair Bluffs, Harbor Bluffs, Harbor Hills and Oakdale Manor. At approximately 6,500 square feet, the station will have sleeping quarters for up to six firefighters.

City officials expect groundbreaking on the project to begin in the fall.

Largo Golf Course to host footgolf national championship qualifier

LARGO - The American FootGolf League (AFGL) US National Championship will hold a Florida qualifier at the City of Largo's Golf Course, on Aug. 27 at 3:00 p.m.

FootGolf, which is played on a traditional golf course, involves the kicking of a soccer ball down the fairway, with the intention, similar to golf, of reaching the hole in as few “strokes” (kicks) as possible. In FootGolf, the hole is increased to 21 inches in diameter in order to accommodate a regulation size soccer ball.

Largo to host community work session about Trotter Road LARGO - The City Commission will hit the road on Aug. 23 for a Community Work Session to be held at St. Patrick's Church Meeting Hall.

The work session, scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m., will be proceeded by an open house at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the Trotter Road Project.

This project will include improvements to bicycle and pedestrian traffic and safety, streetscaping and hardscape elements, landscape, curbing, storm water retrofits to remove pollutants from stormwater runoff, and intersection improvements.

The Maine lobsters are coming!

CLEARWATER - Live Maine lobsters are being flown in just in time for the third annual Tampa Bay Lobster Festival, to be held August 20 and 21 at the Kapok Special Events Center, 923 McMullen Booth Rd., Clearwater.

The festival will feature a variety of tasty treats, including a live steamed lobster dinner, lobster rolls, lobster mac and cheese, as well as non-lobster food items, and new this year, a “Sweet Street” filled with desserts. There will also be live entertainment and arts and crafts vendors.

E&E Stakeout Grill: Simply perfect

T

he last thing E&E Stakeout Grill needs is a glowing dining review describing how great they are, but I'm going to do it anyways.

Why, you ask? Because for those few, very unfortunate souls who have not experienced E&E, perhaps after reading this review, they will. E&E could easily, and probably does, and should, brag about being one of the best steak restaurants in not just Pinellas County, but the entire Tampa Bay area.

But E&E is so much more than a steakhouse. Everything they serve is over-the-top amazing. For example, I go back and forth between the Rodeo Steak (an 8-ounce Grand Western Rodeo Steak with creamy horseradish and smashed sweet potatoes) and the Potato Crusted Salmon, served with a creamy leek and garlic sauce.

Both are to-die for.

Now, I have a confession. I didn't see the Potato Crusted Salmon on the menu on my latest visit, so I'm not sure if they still offer it, but I know their sister restaurant, Guppy's in Indian Rocks Beach, has it because I order from there all the time.

As far as other items on the menu,

my wife loves the Kokopelli Salad, with grilled breast of chicken, bacon, ostenborg buttermilk blue cheese, tomatoes, guacamole, cucumbers, red onion, romaine lettuce, red and green bell peppers, celery and their gazpacho vinaigrette. You're going to pay a couple more bucks if you go at dinner, and since I just checked my bank account, I will continue going at lunch.

If I gave out A pluses, I would give one to E&E, but since I always feel there is room for improvement, I will give E&E an A. OK, what the hell, they do deserve an A plus. Kudos to E&E!
