Trotter Road finally getting some love from city of Largo

I

t’s been over four years in the making, but the city of Largo is finally moving forward with a desperately needed project to rework a 0.7mile section of Trotter Road.

City officials recently announced that the plans for the $5 million project were being finalized and as of now, construction is slated to begin in November and last about a year.

The affected portion of Trotter Road stretches from Eighth Avenue SW to Hillsdale Avenue. The existing roadway lacks bicycle facilities, has a narrow rural section with an inadequate shoulder and substandard sidewalk and crosswalk facilities.

The goal of the work is to replace the current “failed roadway” with a “Community Streets” concept that aims to improve vehicle travel, along with the safety and comfort of bicyclists and pedestrians. to accomplish this, engineers say the

In Brief Pinellas County Mosquito Control is on a mission CLEARWATER - With the rainy season upon us, the good folks at Pinellas County Mosquito Control are reminding us to do our part in trying to curb the population growth of the annoying, and potentially dangerous, insects.

The most important thing that we can do to prevent the breeding of mosquitos is to dump out any standing water you see in buckets, flowerpots, garbage cans, etc., and right

The county also advises cleaning roof gutters regularly, as they can become clogged and hold water, and also changing the water in outdoor pet dishes and bird baths regularly.

Largo announces road closure until August LARGO - The city of Largo recently announced that the roadway of 126th Avenue North between Cross Street and 66th Street North will be closed until Aug. 1 for a sanitary sewer repair.

The roadway will be completely closed and local traffic will be detoured using 121st Avenue North and Cross Street.

A

fter months of debate and meetings and research, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners recently announced that it will allow its moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries to expire on July 27.

After considering various pre-emptions set by state legislation which preclude local governments from regulating the number of medical marijuana facilities within unincorporated areas, Pinellas commissioners determined that they cannot pursue previously discussed limitations on retail dispensaries.

State legislation also prevents local governments from passing zoning

regulations for medical marijuana retail dispensaries that are more restrictive than regulations placed on pharmacies.

The county currently treats pharmacies as retail entities without many restrictions, which means medical marijuana retail dispensaries must be treated in a similar manner. The only difference is that dispensaries can’t be located within 500 feet of schools.

Pinellas County falls within the state’s Central region, which the state says can have up to 136 dispensaries spread throughout the region. The region includes Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Hillsborough, Polk, Orange, Osceola, Sumter, Lake, Seminole, Brevard, Volusia, Indian

River and St. Lucie counties.

Trulieve, which already operates several medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state, opened its first Pinellas location in Clearwater last year. The company now has plans to open dispensaries in Madeira Beach, Dunedin and St. Petersburg, as well as a West Clearwater location on Calumet Street.

According to state law, manufacturing facilities can be located anywhere and there is no limit on the number allowed.

The Pinellas County Commission had been considering certain limits on the location and number of facilities in the unincorporated areas of the county before the state acted on the issue.

Scientology still lobbying for Clearwater land deal

ven after the Clearwater City Council voted against a proposed land swap with Scientology officials last month, it appears as though the church has not yet given up on at least part of the deal.

According to Monique Yingling, an attorney for the Church of Scientology, the church and the city had been in talks for over six months to trade three small parcels of land that border where the church wants to build an auditorium, in exchange for a vacant lot on Cleveland Street that the city needs for parking.

However, in a move that surprised church officials, the city council voted against the deal in June, a turn of events that came on the heels of another contentious land deal involving the city and the church, where the Clearwater Marine Aquarium opted to sell a downtown parcel of land to the city for $4.25 million that the church had offered $15 million to buy.

the parcels in question, at the corner of Court Street and South Garden Avenue, that Scientologists consider an integral part of their proposed plan to build L. Ron Hubbard Hall, a $150 million performance hall and convention center.

Yingling’s letter implied that Scientology officials feel religious bias may be at play, although Horne contented that simply isn’t the case. He hasn’t yet made plans to present Yingling’s proposal to the city council.

When the city of St. Petersburg recently presented the Pinellas County Commission with their list of possible Penny projects, it included $15 million for affordable housing projects.

Sounds reasonable, right? Not so fast, according to Barb Haselden, a candidate for the Pinellas County Commission, District 6.

According to Haselden, 100 percent of the funds derived from the Penny for Pinellas tax should go towards infastructure projects that would repair the district’s sewage and stormwater problems, until a new system is in place.

District 6 covers Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, parts of St. Petersburg, and the beach communities from Redington Shores to Tierra Verde.

After much debate, county closes Water Tower Station park

o the dismay of many Seminole residents, the park surrounding the Seminole Water Tank Station is now closed, as contractors hired by Pinellas County Utilities (PCU) prepare the station for demolition. A pipe contractor is currently locating supply lines to be capped before the demolition contractor begins work this month.

The station, which is owned by PCU but located in Seminole at the corner of 74th Avenue and 113th Street, has been inoperable and unneeded since 2012.

The station was once part of the water distribution infrastructure operated by PCU. It was built in the 1950s and used throughout several decades, but was taken out of service when new utility technology made it obsolete.

However, ongoing annual maintenance costs amount to more than $13,000, compounded by deferred maintenance expenses that have been estimated at $125,000. As a result, the county has opted to demolish the tower

According to the county, the demolition will save PCU customers money and prevent the continuing deterioration of the tower that would have the potential to create a safety hazard.

Previously, Pinellas County officials offered the City of Seminole several opportunities to purchase or lease the property. Those options were declined, and no agreement could be reached.

The demolition work is expected to be completed in November.

Thai Coconut Top-notch Thai

am not going to lie. Thai Coconut is probably not located in the best place in the world. It's not a rough area, but let's just say it's not in the heart of the dining district. But the crazy thing is, it doesn't matter, because this Thai restaurant has won so many awards, the owner, Eddie Punyahotra, has said he doesn't have room on his walls to put them. That is success, my friends.

Located on the fringe of Clearwater and Largo on Missouri Avenue, Thai Coconut's customers come from all over Pinellas County and beyond to dine at what could very well be the best Thai restaurant in the entire Tampa Bay area.

Of course, when I go, I always order the Red Curry, which is to-die-for, but on a recent trip, I had both duck and seafood. Oh my gosh, people. It's crazy good.

It's really not surprising that Thai Coconut is famous and has won a gazillion awards.

Eddie honed his culinary skills growing up in Thailand and perfected them in the States, working for some of the finest hotels, such as The Vinoy in downtown St. Petersburg,

The godfathers of punk: Social D @ Jannus Live

H

ere’s how you know you’ve made it in the music business: You’ve stayed strong for almost four decades on your own terms, on your own time and by your own rules, and over that time, your influence has only grown. That pretty much describes Social Distortion.

Inspired by British punk acts like the Sex Pistols, Social Distortion was founded in Fullerton, California, in 1979 by vocalist and frontman Mike Ness.

The band has long been considered a pioneer in the California punk movement that spawned such acts as Bad Religion, Green Day and No Doubt.

Since its inception, the band lineup has been a revolving-door of talent, with Ness the only constant member, but that never stopped Social D. To this day, the band continues to create new music, with an album slated for release next year.

“The most common thing I hear is, ‘Man, your music got me through some hard times.’ And I just say, ‘Me too.’” ~ Social D frontman Mike Ness After seven studio albums, the band is probably best known for their usually autobiographical punk and rockabilly songs, all written by Ness, such as Ball and Chain and their cover of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, both from Social D’s 1990 self-titled album; 1992’s Bad Luck; and the iconic Story of My Life.

These days, the band is rarely off the road for long, and continues to grip fans who have been around since 1983’s “Mommy’s Little Monster,” while also drawing a new generation of fans who discover the band through hand-shot

YouTube clips.

“I see people bringing their kids to shows,” said Ness. “And I see kids bringing their parents.”

Social Distortion is currently embarking on a summer tour, with a stop scheduled at Jannus Live on Aug. 27.

Jannus Live is an outdoor, standingroom only concert venue. It is located at 18 2nd St. North in downtown St. Petersburg.

ecent articles in The Roe Report have explained why home prices are going up. In the past year the national median price was up 5.8% but in our area it was up 14%. The reasons for these increases and why they could continue have been discussed. The increases are based on supply and demand. Some reasons include people staying in their homes for nine and a half instead of five years, the historic norm. We have a 1,000 people a day moving to Florida. As interest rates creep up, buyers that are sitting on the fence make a move to avoid higher costs. That are many other reasons, but the fact remains, demand is much stronger than supply. Overall supply equals 60 percent

The biggest difference between today and the housing bubble in 2006 is the way people borrow money. In the 2003-2006 period, buyers could get a stated income loan with no documentation. Today, they are offering loans with 3.5% down, but buyers need a credit score around 640 and they must prove they have the required amount of income.

The most frequent question I receive is, "Will prices continue to rise at the current rate?" The answer is no.

It's simple math. Prices cannot continue to rise three to four times faster than the increase in income.

However, nobody knows where the top is or when it will happen. Since opening Roe Realty in 2005, I have sold over 2,000 properties. Outside of
