BELLEAIR BLUFFS - After years of talks and planning, Belleair Bluffs commissioners got their first look at the plans for a $3 million replacement facility for the Largo Fire Station 43, which currently lies within the Belleair Bluffs city limits on Indian Rocks Road. The project architect, Karl Bernhard of Sweet Sparkman Architects, presented the proposed one-story design to Belleair Bluffs city commissioners at a special workshop meeting. It was pointed out that care has been taken to ensure the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look and design meshes well with nearby houses and other buildings. Several residents in attendance at the meeting shared concerns for the noise levels that will be coming from the new station, and also the safety issue of

SEMINOLE - The city of Seminole finally appears ready to move forward with its plans for Waterfront Park, which will be located at 10400 Park Blvd., next to The Home Depot. The green light for the project got helped along by a $100,000 contribution by state officials. This money will be used to fund Phase 1 of the park, which includes an area to launch canoes and kayaks, fencing and the installation of a driveway and parking area. This phase of the park’s construction is expected to commence this summer. Other phases of the park’s construction will include an extensive playground area with equipment suitable for children of all abilities and a fitness trail complete with workout equipment, similar to that at Largo’s Southwest Recreation Center. LARGO - Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) have been conducting an investigation into the “disgusting” and “abusive” conditions under which wildlife rescuer Ralph Heath was keeping a personal collection of wildlife in a massive, windowless warehouse on Starkey Road. Acting upon a complaint regarding the mistreatment of animals at a 35,000 square foot warehouse complex located at 12388 Starkey Rd., FWCC investigators found substantial violations and “deplorable” conditions. In his 32-page report, FWCC investigator Robert O’Horo described the hor-

The injured laughing gull was transported to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary for treatment, while other animals at the warehouse were relocated to better areas within the facility while investigators determine what further action should be taken.

LARGO - This summer, the City of Largo's Aquatics Division is offering aquatics camps, jam-packed with water related activities for children ages 6-17. Each week, professional aquatic staff will lead campers in a variety of fun aquatic experiences. The All About Aquatics camp will take field trips that include Adventure Island, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, deep sea fishing and more. Sands Beach Bar & Grill Simply Amazing

can't speak for you but what I love, no, I mean, really love, is the freedom to go to the beach whenever I want. The fact that the beautiful Gulf of Mexico is right at our fingertips. Now, I will be the first to tell you that I am no world traveler. Truthfully, I don't want to be, but I lived in California for over 10 years, yes, been to Mexico, Jamaica, etc., and NO, I have not found more beautiful beaches than what are right here in our own backyard. Having said that, what I am asking each of you to do, OK, I won't ask, I'll demand it, and that is to take an afternoon and go with a friend, your wife, your husband, your boyfriend, girlfriend, or even a work colleague, and head to the Sands Beach Bar & Grill, located in the DreamView Beachfront Hotel and Resort in Clearwater Beach, formerly the Wyndham Garden. I stumbled onto this truly amazing hidden gem about a year ago. How, you ask? Because there is nothing I love more than going to a casual restaurant on the beach with an

amazing view like at the Sands Beach Bar. But if the food sucks, I'll give them one or two tries and then I'm out. But I confess, I'm a frequent diner at Sands Beach Bar because they have damn good food. Even if I don't want to have dinner there, I will at least go to the Tiki Bar on the beach and have a couple of cervezas as I

take in a breathtaking view of the sunset. Really, who uses the word breathtaking anymore? How about awesome? In any event, the views from the outside deck of the restaurant and the Tiki Bar are todie-for. Of course, this dining feature is going to buzz-kill everything and let the secret about Sands Beach Bar, but, hey, I'm not a selfish man and I feel I should share the wealth, or knowledge anyways, about Sands. As for the food, it is fantastic and to my utter amazement, no, I don't use utter that often, the pricing is surprisingly low. For example, three very healthy fresh grouper tacos are only $13. On my latest visit, since I have previously had the grouper tacos, I went with the Mediterranean Chicken sandwich: grilled chicken with a creamy red pesto sauce, feta cheese, fresh tomatoes and kalamata olives on toasted ciabatta bread. OMG, people, it was out of this world. In addition to seafood

items, Sands Beach Bar also offers pulled pork sliders, Reubens, Black Angus burgers, wraps, gourmet pizza and much more. Truthfully, if you can't find an item on this menu that you will love, you have serious issues. The place is absolutely amazing, with an absolutely amazing view of the Gulf of Mexico, delicious and well-priced cuisine and warm and friendly service to boot. Malia was awesome. And a note to all of you: hotel owners love locals to dine at their restaurants and drink at their bars. And your wife or husband owns me a large draft for the heads up. Bon appetit!
