Sugar sand festival breaks attendance records

CLEARWATER Pinellas County’s Bayside Health Clinic was officially dedicated and opened for business at a ceremony last month attended by city and county officials and healthcare professionals.

The clinic, located at 14808 49th St. N. in Clearwater, provides medical, dental and behavioral health services to Pinellas County's homeless population.

The facilty is a 3,078 square foot, one-story, free-standing building with exam rooms, a dental office and office space for confidential counseling.

Those in attendance at the dedication ceremony, including Pinellas County Commission Chairman Charlie Justice, stressed the importance of taking care of all of Pinellas County’s citizens.

Belleair teen completes playground in the nick of time BELLEAIR - Belleair resident Nolan Purdy, 17, had a plan to construct a new playground area for young children in the east playing field near the Dimmit Community Center.

Purdy’s plan would serve as a community project that he must complete to become an Eagle Scout, before he turns 18 this month, while also filling a void in the town. Purdy raised $5,000 for the playground’s construction and convinced town commissioners to pony up the remaining $9,000.

Construction on the playground was finished late last month.

SEMINOLE - Due to the demolition work and ongoing construction at the Seminole City Center development, the Seminole Chamber of Commerce was forced to vacate its previous headquarters last year, with plans in the works to build a new facility on vacant, city-owned property next to 8400 113th St. N. The Edward J. and Vivian E. Lurie Charitable Foundation donated $500,000 to cover the costs of constructing the new building, but now there are questions surrounding the legality of the project, specifically as it pertains to the public purpose of the building.

The building will have rental space available to the public, but at a recent workshop meeting, the Seminole City Council raised questions about how often it will be available for rentals and who will handle those rentals. Council members also raised questions about the maintenance associated with the property.

SEMINOLE - Pinellas County Utilities recently held an open house to discuss possible routes for a new wastewater force main that is being planned for the Seminole/Pinellas Park area.

The redundant force main project is being planned to replace an aging 20inch wastewater force main. The existing main is more than 50 years

Daigneault said he feels the project is on “somewhat tenuous legal ground” and the city opted to bring in an outside attorney to review the matter.

In addition to the potential legal problem, the city’s one and only bid for the

project came in at $594,000, leaving a shortfall of nearly $100,000. A chamber representative said they are planning fundraisers to raise the balance required to build the facility.

The new chamber headquarters was originally slated to be ready for occupation by fall 2016.

The replacement is being done to protect public health, improve wastewater service reliability, improve operations and protect the environment.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2017 and will be completed by mid-2019.

Largo woman’s prison sentence commuted as Obama cleans house LARGO - Carla Yvette Holte of Largo was originally sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for drug-related charges on Nov. 2, 2001. But she will now be released from prison on May 5, 2018, as part of President Obama’s ongoing effort to release federal prisoners who received lengthy mandatory prison sentences for non-violent drug offenses.

Obama has thus far commuted the sentences for 306 inmates, 110 of whom were serving life sentences. Obama has said he will continue granting commutations during his final months in office to inmates who meet certain criteria set out by the Justice Department.

Largo to host Aqua Zumba Bash LARGO - The City of Largo Aquatics Division is hosting Aqua Zumba Bash, a high energy water exercise event on Saturday, June 4 from 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. at Southwest Aquatic Complex.

Zumba is a Latin-inspired cardio/dance workout with music that conditions and tones the body. Adding water resistance to Zumba allows individuals to receive a more intense cardio-based workout while in a low-impact environment. Instructors will lead the class in four feet of water so no swimming skills are required, but one should be comfortable in waist deep water.

Brasa’s Restaurant Legit Peruvian cuisine

W

hen was the last time you had great Peruvian cuisine?

OK, how about this question: When was the last time you had Peruvian cuisine, period? Would “never” be the correct answer? If you are anything like me, you probably don't even know what Peruvian cuisine is.

Believe me, you are not alone.

So before I jump into this month's dining feature, let me give you a quick tutorial on Peruvian food. Peruvian cuisine originates from none other than the country of Peru, where the main language spoken is Spanish.

Peruvians pride themselves on using the finest and freshest ingredients. Like American cuisine, Peruvian food is focused on beef and poultry, and in making sure each entrée is spectacular. They are equally interested in revolving dishes around fresh vegetables such as potatoes and carrots.

My good friend and neighbor recently told me about a Peruvian restaurant on Highland in

Largo. Of course, it piqued my interest, so on a recent rainy day, I ventured over there for lunch. I tried to get my daughter to go with me but her imagination of Peruvian food is probably like everyone else's and she politely bowed out. What a mistake she made.

At the same time, I don't want to mislead you into thinking it was the best

restaurant I have ever been to, but learning that each ingredient is the freshest Peruvian ingredient available in the Tampa Bay area was pretty cool.

On the recommendation of the staff, for an appetizer, I ordered the Yuca a la Huancaina, fried slices of yucca (similar to a potato) covered with a lightly spicy Peruvian cheese sauce.

It was good but I would not write home about it.

For lunch, I went with two dishes: the half rotisserie chicken with black beans and rice and the Ceviche de Pescado, fish marinated in lemon juice and onions. The rotisserie chicken was good but not great. The fish dish was plentiful, and I never use that word, and very fresh, but a little too much lemon for my taste.

Now don't get me wrong, folks. I liked the place but I did not love it. Out of fairness, I shouldn't have ordered the appetizer or the fish. Next time, I'm going to go with my gut

and order what I was originally planning to get: the rotisserie chicken sandwich or the steak with rice, beans and plantains.

My only beef with the place was that my waiter could barely speak English.

I get it, the restaurant is Peruvian, but I'm not and it was a struggle to communicate. My opinion only. Go to Brasa’s and give something different a try, you won’t regret it.
