What’s Old is New Again...

After 40 years perfecting his craft as a custom painter for high-end homes, the founder of Dennis White Painting has now partnered with two men to bring something very special to those fortunate few. "A year ago, I partnered with Caleb Gasway to continue to build on our reputation of serving the customers who have very high expectations and allow us to meet them. We have professional painters who work for us.They are fabulous, very conscientious in what they do. We have brought our business to a whole other level," said Dennis White. White, who had done work at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel and numerous upscale homes in Belleair, was then given an opportunity to purchase some of the remaining heart pine wood that was originally used to build the Biltmore in the late 1800s.

"We partnered with David Coster, who is a professional wood worker. He and I have been working together for over 30 years. The guy is just an absolute professional. David and I are now working together to build tabletops and bases together with the reclaimed wood from the Belleview Biltmore. Everything is hand-

made, custom made to order for each customer. The customer can tell us how they would like it designed, and they can also personally pick the wood from the Biltmore that they want us to use for their table," said White. Knowing the history of the Belleview Biltmore Hotel and its rich tradition, Dennis and his partners knew that the remaining parts of the Biltmore, the wood, had to be treated as respectfully as the Biltmore itself. "Being able to take the original wood from the Biltmore and turn it into a custom-made table for a customer is truly a love of labor for us," said White. With wood lengths of up to 20 feet long and a minimum weight of 400 pounds,White said they can turn the Biltmore wood into sofa tables, coffee tables, dining room tables, conference tables and anything else the customer can envision. Operating on a first-come, first-served basis, White says the turnaround time is anywhere between six to eight weeks, so he stressed not to wait too long if interested. After all, once this special wood is gone, it's gone. For more information, call Dennis White at 727-481-6436.

Pinellas Trail Loop completion slowly growing nearer By Jason Coffman

F

or nearly 30 years, Pinellas County officials have been working to complete the Pinellas Trail Loop, what will soon be a 75-mile trail of blood, sweat and tears. The Trail was born in 1990, with just six miles of trail connecting Largo’s Taylor Park to Seminole Park. Since that time, county officials have gradually added on to the Trail, mainly utilizing money from Penny for Pinellas to fund the project, along with funding provided by the Florida Department of Transportation. Now, construction is expected to begin in September on a 9.5-mile portion of the loop that will connect the trail end near the U.S. 19 and Enterprise Road overpass north to the John Chesnut Park Trail end in Palm Harbor. FDOT has agreed to pony up $5.7 million of the approximately $8 million project, leaving Pinellas County to sort out the rest. To that end, the county has applied for a federal grant, stating, “The Loop will

Rick Scott recently signed statewide legislation that will regulate the rules for ridesharing providers such as Uber and Lyft, overriding the local laws that may be in place. “I’m proud to sign this legislation today to make it easier for ridesharing companies to thrive in Florida and help ensure the safety of our families,” Scott said in a statement. “Florida is one of the most business-friendly states in the nation because of our efforts to reduce burdensome regulations and encourage innovation and

Florida water quality is in the toilet A results of a recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council have determined that Florida has the second worse drinking water in the country. The violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act are based on population, with an estimated 7.5 million Floridians possibly being exposed to unsafe drinking water in 2015. The worst states in the country were Texas, Florida, Pennsylvannia, New Jersey and Georgia, for a total of nearly 77 million people.

St. Petersburg development boom ready to tackle its biggest project yet.

By Daniel Holloway

It’s no secret that real estate redevelopment has been booming in downtown St. Petersburg. But now, that boom is extending to the crucial 34th Street corridor.

D

evelopers, perhaps bored with downtown high-rises, seem to be ready to tackle a more lofty project. After years of neglect, St. Petersburg’s busy 34th Street corridor is finally getting some love. Where some might see a string of seedy businesses and strip malls, savvy real estate investors are seeing only opportunity in 34th Street. The list of current and proposed projects along the thoroughfare is long and varied: a Starbucks is slated to open next month; a new Wendy’s fast food restaurant is also slated to open soon; an Aldi supermarket; a new Publix at the

south end of 34th Street was razed and rebuilt last year. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is nearing completion at 26th Avenue South and the list goes on. But the grandaddy of all the projects is the $70-million Skyway Marina District that is currently in the works. Located at 30th Avenue South, the Skyway Marina project is expected to be a mixed-use development featuring around 300 apartments and over 13,000 square feet of retail space, as well as restaurants, a parking garage and a 100,000-square-foot self-storage facility. Tampa real estate developer Philips Development and Realty LLC (PDR)

paid $4.2 million for the 9-acre parcel of land that was previously owned by Home Depot. The home improvement giant paid $6.5 million for the property in 2007, but plans to build a store at the location fizzled along with the economy and the land has sat vacant ever since.

“It is areas like this that we focus on," said Don Philips, managing director of PDR, in a statement. "The Skyway Marina District is screaming for retail, luxury living and involvement from the St. Petersburg art scene.” PDR hopes to break ground on the project by the end of the year.

Baker, 60, held a press conference on the steps of City Hall to officially announce his candidacy, after months of speculation that he would run, and he wasted no time in challenging incumbent Mayor Rick Kriseman to a series of debates. Baker previously served as mayor from 2001 until 2010. Kriseman was a member of the St. Petersburg City Council during most of that time. In his press conference, Baker called out Kriseman for a number of things, including the sewage crisis that has plagued the city since millions of gallons of untreated sewage were dumped

Tailgators Sports Bar & Pizza Pub: The name says it all

S

ome people catch all the breaks. How so, you ask? When Lisa Kingston, owner of the Beef O'Brady's restaurant on Walsingham Road in Largo, threw in the towel, she left behind an amazing opportunity for a lucky person to step in to a turn-key sports pub with a completed build-out worth thousands and thousands of dollars. And the crazy thing is, Lisa didn't fail. In fact, she did just the opposite. But after years of working long hours and dealing with unreliable staff, she grew tired and wanted to spend more quality time with her kids. Makes all the sense the world. It took courage and incredible smarts to make the decision to call it a day. So, moving on. The restaurant and bar sat vacant for months. I often walked by, thinking how fortunate someone is going to be to scoop up this place. Well, that day came. A local family - a nephew, mom, sisters and

aunts -- put together the money and hatched a plan and what you have now is the new Tailgators Sports Bar and Pizza Pub. Tailgators has the same great atmosphere and dĂŠcor of the previous Beef O'Brady's, with amazing pizza. Yes, Tailgators offers a menu similar to Beef O'Brady's, complete with burgers, sandwiches, wraps and salads, but it's with their Chicago-style, thin crust pizza with which they are very quickly making a name for themselves. On the afternoon I paid them a visit, in addition to the

Tailgators 13847-C Walsingham Rd. Largo 727-330-6999 Deluxe Pizza, which was out of this world, I also ordered the chicken wings, which were awesome. Here's the deal, folks. This family saw an opportunity and capitalized on it. Kudos to them and their ability to bring in an experienced and amazing chef to run the line, while general manager and coowner, Jason Wold, runs the front of the house. They are building an amazing restaurant and an amazing brand. Although you will instantly feel like you are still in Beef O'Brady's, with the

ambiance that Lisa lovingly created, Tailgators pizza will have you feeling like you just stepped into Little Italy. Congratulations to Lisa for getting her life back and being able to spend more time with her family, and congratulations to Jason and his family for capitalizing on an amazing opportunity. Now that we're all warm and fuzzy, let's eat. And oh yeah, make sure you save room for their homemade cheesecake. It will change your life.

Bon Appetit!

In addition to musical headliners, a touring ensemble of artists, cirque performers and general mayhemists will appear alongside local performers. For more information, visit www.jannuslive.com.

MUSIC

REH goes on the road with Third Eye Blind By Daniel Holloway

G

eneration X-ers, rejoice! This one is for you: Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road will present Third Eye Blind: Summer Gods tour with special guests Silversun Pickups at Clearwater’s Coachman Park on Saturday, June 10 at 8:00 p.m. Third Eye Blind was formed in San Francisco in 1993 by the songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins (lead vocals and rhythym guitar) and Kevin Cadogan (lead guitar). They signed the band's first major label recording contract with Elektra Records in 1996, a deal that was later reported as the largest publishing deal ever for an unsigned artist, and the rest is history.

"Am I a rock star? Yeah, I guess. I also get to live in North Beach and go to a pub and drink my pint and go to a café and drink my coffee. I carry groceries home on the tank of my motorcycle. I find pleasure in things that are simple. Is that a rock star's life? It is for me." ~ Third Eye Blind co-founder Stephan Jenkins

The band’s self-titled album, Third Eye Blind, was released in 1997 with a band line-up featuring Jenkins and Cadogan, as well as Arion Salazar (bass guitar) and Brad Hargreaves (drums). The album spawned such hits as "Semi-Charmed Life," "Graduate," "How's It Going to Be," "Losing a Whole Year," and "Jumper." It remains the band’s most popular offering to date, selling over six million copies in the U.S. alone. In 1999, the band released their second album, Blue. Although it was not as well received as Third Eye Blind, the album sold 75,000 copies its first week of release, and by 2003, had sold 1.25 million in the U.S. Four singles were released from the album: "Anything,"

"Never Let You Go," "10 Days Late," and "Deep Inside of You." During this time, the band terminated founding member Kevin Cadogan, who subsequently filed a lawsuit against the band alleging wrongful termination, adding that his production, recording and songwriter royalties were withheld since being fired from the band. The lawsuit was ultimately settled out of court and the band has since settled in with new members Kryz Reid (lead guitar), Alex Kopp (keyboards) and Alex LeCavalier (bass guitar). Third Eye Blind’s most recent release was 2016’s We Are Drugs. For more information, visit www.rutheckerdhall.com. Coachman Park is located at 301 Drew St. in downtown Clearwater.

The Roe Report By Cliff Roe Broker/Owner Roe Realty

T

he usual subject is why to buy real estate, but this month, I want to discuss why you want to live in Pinellas County. In the summer, the waters of the Gulf and Tampa Bay hold down our temperature making this a much more desirable place to live than the inland areas. In the winter, frost and freeze warnings don't include us, unless they extend below Sarasota County. Again, it's because we are located between the warm waters of the Gulf and Tampa Bay. Bugs are a problem in any climate that doesn't have a freeze to kill off a large percentage of the population. Pinellas is only twelve miles wide. The winds constantly shift back and forth, leaving much of our bug population stranded over open water. I'm told there was a hurricane that came up Tampa Bay back in 1912. I

from east to west and dries up over the center of Pinellas County. When we do get a heavy rain, it tends to form over the Gulf and travel west to east. ur Gulf waters are emerald green because we don't have fresh water runoffs. When you travel the state, you notice the Atlantic is dark. This is because of the freshwater rivers and streams that carry silt to the ocean. In addition to the temperature, weather, and beauty of the area, we are close to most of the major attractions in FLorida. Disney, Universal, and Busch Gardens are favorites, with Lego Land getting better known all the time. We have theaters of all sizes featuring everything from Broadway shows to local artists. We have internationally famous art galleries. We offer the opera and theater. Ringling

don't remember it, but I do know if you look at a Florida map, it shows Ft. Myers sticking way out in the Gulf. For a hurricane to give us a direct hit, it would have to swing out into the Gulf and take a sharp angle to swing back in our direction. If you watch the weather map, you see south of St Petersburg getting hit with heavy rains and north of Clearwater. Most of our rain comes

Brothers museum is just down the road in Sarasota. We have excellent dining and our highway system allows for better traffic flow than most other highly developed areas.
