BELLEAIR BLUFFS - Thanks to a good rating from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Belleair Bluffs residents will be seeing a discount in their flood insurance premiums.

Residents who live in a designated flood hazard area will enjoy a discount of 15 percent off their flood insurance bills.

Residents who live in areas that are not prone to flooding don’t miss out either; they will receive discounts of five percent as well.

The savings come as a result of the city’s ranking in FEMA’s Community Rating System of the National Flood Insurance Program. The program evaluates a community’s efforts at “flood

prevention activities” and effective floodplain management.

The city scored a seven on a scale of one to 10, with one being the best.

While a seven might not seem that great, this is the first time Belleair Bluffs has been evaluated, and according to FEMA, most communities enter the program with a rating of eight or nine.

The rating l a n d e d Belleair Bluffs in the top 43 percent of Florida cities that are evaluated by the program, and according to Commissioner Taylour Shimkus, earned residents a bigger discount.

The flood insurance discounts have already been put in effect.

Belleair lays out for new town vehicles BELLEAIR Belleair Town Commissioners recently voted to purchase seven new vehicles to replace aging vehicles that are currently in the town’s fleet.

The purchase will include three Ford pickups for use by the Water Department, the Parks and Recreation Department and the police department; a Ford Fusion hybrid car for use by town administrators; two new Ford Explorer police vehicles; and a John Deere backhoe and loader.

The $300,000 price tag will be financed

by Sun Trust Bank.

Belleair commissioners approve collaboration plan for new park BELLEAIR - Teen-aged Belleair resident Nolan Purdy recently went before the Belleair Town Commisssion to pitch his

idea to construct a new playground area for young children in the east playing field near the Dimmit Community Center.

Purdy’s plan will kill two birds with one stone: it will serve as a community project that Purdy must complete to become an Eagle Scout, and it will fill a void in the town.

Purdy’s plan calls for him to raise $5,000 towards the cost of the project, with the town ponying up for the remaining $9,000-$10,000.

Town commissioners unanimously agreed to move forward with the project, and further agreed to put aside money each year for when it becomes necessary to replace the park equipment.

SEMINOLE - Work is underway on an extensive road project to improve traffic flow on a section of Starkey Road/Park Street North from 84th Lane North to 82nd Avenue North in Seminole.

These traffic enhancements are part of Pinellas County's Capital Improvement Program.

The traffic program focuses on alleviating congestion on major routes, improving safety and adding sidewalks and other features for better pedestrian use.

The $13-million project is funded by the 1-cent Penny for Pinellas sales tax along with a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation and other county enterprise funds.

Seminole looking for exhibitors for Art in the Park

Seminole’s 4th annual Heart & Sole shoe drive

SEMINOLE - City officials recently announced that they are looking for artists and crafters to exhibit their wares in the inaugural Art in the Park event next month.

The arts and crafts show is scheduled to take place April 23, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Rd. The event will showcase only original, hand-crafted items.

SEMINOLE - The City of Seminole, along with Lake Seminole Square, Brookdale Senior Living and Seminole Councilor Jim Quinn, will be collecting new shoes and socks for kids ages 3 through 18, who have been removed from the care of their parents through no fault of their own.

Shoes and socks will be collected at Lake Seminole Square, located at 8333 Seminole Blvd., on March 22 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The items will then be delivered to the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranches.

don't know what it is, but I love eating and staying at really nice hotels. Hey, who doesn't?

What was I ever thinking, to stay at a Motel 6 back during my road jaunts as a youngster?

Jaunt: A short excursion or journey for pleasure. In the event you didn't think jaunt was a word. But, I mean, really, Motel 6? Yuck! Yes, I am a very big hotel snob. There are very few things that I am a snob about but hotels are at the top of the list.

And just as important are the restaurants and bars inside these very nice hotels. I had a gym membership at the Sand Key Sheraton for over a decade that not only allowed my family and me access to the gym, but also to the tennis courts, the pool and, yes, the restaurants and bars. It wasn't until later that I realized that many, if not all, of these nicer hotels along the beach not only allow locals to frequent their restaurants and bars, but they encourage it.

Thomas Rowe's Don CeSar Hotel, known as the very fitting "Pink Palace," opened on Jan. 16, 1928, with an extravagant party attended by Tampa and St. Petersburg's elite. The hotel quickly became a

favorite stomping ground for the rich and famous of the Jazz Age, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clarence Darrow, Al Capone, Lou Gehrig and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Pink Palace continued to attract the rich and famous throughout the Great Depression, thanks in part to a deal with New York Yankees owner, Jacob Ruppert, to house his team there during spring training for three years.

Fast forward to today and the Loews Don CeSar Hotel has honored its developer and founder, Thomas Rowe, by naming its newest bar and restaurant after him. The Rowe Bar is a sleek restaurant bar, sharing interior and exterior space to offer the most breathtaking sunsets right on the

Yes, the interior is nice and comfortable, but we don't go to the beach to sit inside, so I insist you go to The Rowe Bar to catch a beautiful sunset and enjoy the incredible view of the Gulf of Mexico and the lush and lovely exterior décor. Did I really just use the word lovely?

After learning The Rowe Bar had just opened at the Loews Don CeSar, I had to go check it out. The timing couldn't have been better. I arrived around 5:30, just in time to take it all in and order one of their special "Ades for any Age" cold beverages. I had heard a lot about them so I want to give them a try. I went with the Salted Watermelon. It was delicious, but I'm not stupid; I topped it off with an ice-cold Blue Moon with an orange slice. Ahhh, life is wonderful.

After enjoying both of my beverages, I placed my food order, then sat back and enjoyed the sunset. God, I love our beaches. Hey, I was talking to God, not you.

For dinner, I wanted to experience a couple of different items, so I went with the Wagyu burger and the ceviche.

Both were absolutely spectacular.

A gentleman and his wife dining next to me told me that the calamari was out of this world. Hey, why couldn't they have told me that before I ordered? Think, people.

In addition, they told me they come once a year from Boston (Go, Rays!) and they stay at the hotel every time.

They said the staff remembers them and warmly greets them. No kidding!

Hello, this is a Loews property. They are the crème de la crème of hotels.

But again, what I think is so cool is that The Rowe Bar welcomes locals and anyone else who wants to experience great food and drinks, and, yes, our beautiful Florida sunsets.
