BELLEAIR BLUFFS - The new bait house built by Pinellas County recently opened at the Belleair Causeway Boat Ramp after a lengthy delay.

The new facility replaces the old Belleair Bait House that was torn down several years ago during the construction of the Belleair Causeway Bridge and the replacement of the adjacent boat ramp.

Penny for Pinellas funds paid for the new bait house, which cost a whopping $780,000.

The bait house concessionaire, Angler 360, was awarded a contract to run concessions at the shop through a competitive bid process. In addition to fishing supplies, the bait house will offer a variety of food and drink options.

In Brief Belleair police officer feared for his life before shooting suspect BELLEAIR - Last month, Belleair police officer Roy Olsen, along with other law enforcement officers, responded to a call from employees at the Fifth Third Bank located at 601 Indian Rocks Rd. N. in Belleair.

According to Belleair Police Chief Bill Sohl, the employees reported a suspicious-looking man with a large bulge in his pocket inside the bank.

The man, 28-year-old Jamaal Bishop, soon left the bank and headed towards the Pinellas Trail on Belleview Boulevard, where he was approached by Olsen and two other Belleair police officers, Teddi Easterman and Randy Krause.

Bishop alledgedly pushed Easterman and fled on foot towards Fort Harrison Avenue. The officers pursued and say Bishop pulled a gun from his pocket and pointed it at the officers, at which point, Sohl says there was an exchange of fire between Olsen and Bishop.

LARGO - More than 750,000 brilliant LED lights illuminate the pathways and plazas at the Florida Botanical Gardens annual Holiday Lights in the Gardens event.

Visitors will enjoy an array of seasonal decorations and displays, live holiday-themed entertainment and nightly visits with Santa.

With approximately 65,000 visitors last year, the holiday event has become an area favorite, with new displays and fresh concepts to celebrate the season.

Holiday Lights in the Gardens will be open every evening from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. through Dec. 31. A donation of $4 per person, age 13 years and older, is suggested.

SEMINOLE - The Seminole Chamber of Commerce recently announced its plans to temporarily move its office and conference center in early January.

According to chamber officials, the move has been necessitated by the ongoing demolition and construction at the Seminole City Center location, at

SEMINOLE - Detectives with the Pinellas County Sheriff s Office Crimes Against Children Unit are investigating the drowning of a sixyear-old Seminole boy.

The victim, Matthew Dixon, and his friends had been spraying water guns and super soakers around the pool at his family’s home on 92nd Avenue when Dixon fell into the water.

Destiny Reny, a 10-year-old friend of the boy, jumped into the water after she noticed Dixon was not coming out. When she could not rescue him, she got Dixon s 14-year-old brother, who pulled the boy from the water.

Dixon s mother, Kelly Woodward, and a neighbor performed CPR until Seminole Fire Rescue personnel arrived.

From there, he was subsequently airlifted to All Children s Hospital. He later died from his injuries.

Detectives say there were adults nearby while the children were playing around the pool and that the incident appears to be accidental in nature.

hat is it about Mexican food that brings hungry bellies out of the woodwork in droves? Simple. It tastes damn good. I mean, come on, people. Let’s admit it. Who doesn’t love a sizzling fajita with steak or chicken, topped with tons of cheese, sour cream, guacamole, fresh tomatoes and shredded lettuce, or a fully stuffed fat burrito or chimichanga?

Not that you care, but cheese is my weakness. I freaking love the stuff.

But add it to any type of Mexican entrØe and I’m a sucker to boot. Tack on a cold Corona with a wedge of lime and I’m yours for life.

Obviously the partners of the new Monarca’s on the Beach Mexican Restaurant in St. Pete Beach are well aware that there are millions of folks like me traveling the beaches of St. Pete Beach who can’t live without their weekly, or sometimes daily, dose of delicious Mexican food.

The partnership of Arturo Brawn, Claudia Johnson, Guillermo Cuevas and Stephanie Stout has teamed up to fill one of the largest voids in St.

Pete Beach history. OK, maybe not history, but you get my point.

Now, don’t get me wrong. If you don’t deliver with damn good food, great atmosphere and impeccable service, us Mexican addicts will look elsewhere to get our fix, but have no fear, my fellow Mexican food lovers, Monarca’s does more than deliver. No, I don’t mean they actually deliver the food. They deliver, they hit the mark, they have hit a home run.

For starters, the exterior and interior of the new Mexican restaurant will blow you away. They truly kicked ass on the design. The exterior is the bomb and the interior is furnished with custom made tables and chairs straight from Mexico.
