Clearwater agrees to two-year water ferry subsidy

he city of Clearwater has been exploring numerous options to alleviate the ongoing traffic problems in Clearwater Beach for years. One solution recently got a boost when the Clearwater City Council agreed to a two-year contract with Clearwater Ferry to the tune of nearly $440,000.

Clearwater Ferry currently offers water ferry service between downtown

of nearly 100 passengers, versus the two smaller boats currently in service, which can transport 21 and 42 passengers each.

“I would pay almost any amount of money to avoid the traffic nightmare in Clearwater Beach,” said Belleair Bluffs resident Tom Schincarol. “This sounds like an inexpensive option, and you get to enjoy a nice ride on the Intracoastal.”

The company, which began service in March 2015, currently operates two ferry boats and, thanks to Clearwater’s subsidy, plans to add a third boat to its fleet. The new boat will have a capacity

ccording to a group of consultants brought in over six months ago, visions of a revitalized downtown Clearwater waterfront district include plans for more green space, complete with a garden, bike trails, cafes and more, all overlooking the Intracoastal.

Plans for the downtown transformation were recently unveiled to the Clearwater City Council, but the city is still seeking input from the community before a final plan is submitted by the consultants. Several parts of the plan would require a referendum and voter approval to move forward.

The proposal, called Imagine Clearwater, includes a comprehensive overhaul of the downtown bluff area, including Coachman Park, where many

outdoor activites and concerts are currently held. The plan for the park would be to transition it from an event venue to a more traditional park with walking trails, a garden and a playground area.

The concerts and other events that are currently held at Coachman Park would now be held at a new adjacent space called “The Green.”

The Main Library would also be tweaked to draw more people to the area, with a rooftop event space overlooking the water and a new groundfloor restaurant.

An ambitious aspect of the consultants’ proposal involves the city-owned location of the Harborview Centre. The plans recommend that this area be revamped to include a water pad and a pavilion, as well as cafes and shops, and possibly a hotel or housing units.

Downtown planners envision the area to be a people-friendly urban core with more housing options, retail stores and cafes and restaurants, like what downtown St. Petersburg has accomplished in recent years.

The final proposal will be presented to the city this month. Those plans will also include locations for possible aerial transportation gondolas, which have been proposed by local developers, as well as cost estimates for the project.

Construction begins on Belleview Place

JMC Communities recently held a sod-turning ceremony to commemorate the official beginning of construction at the site that formerly housed Belleair’s Belleview Biltmore Hotel, a sprawling wooden structure that was originally built in 1897.

The new development, called Belleview Place, will feature a part of the original hotel that will be moved to the front of the property and converted into a boutique hotel with 35 guest rooms. The new hotel will be called Belleview Inn. The portion of the old hotel is expected to be moved to its new foundation this month. Renovations for just this part of the property are expected to run around $13 million. The hotel sched-

Largo wants input on West Bay Drive Trail Head plan

he City of Largo Community Development Department will be hosting a meeting to share designs for two projects, the West Bay Drive Trail Head and Clearwater-Largo Road District improvements, on Dec. 15 at 6:00 p.m.

The West Bay Drive Trail Head project will improve connection points in downtown, from areas adjacent to the Pinellas Trail, from Washington Avenue SW to 4th Avenue NW. Improvements will be made to beautify the trailhead with amenities, signage, landscaping and more. The goal of the meeting is to share the final design of the trail head and obtain feedback from residents on the type of recreational amenities desired for this improved public space.

Infrastructure improvements are also planned in the Clearwater-Largo Road Community Redevelopment District between West Bay Drive and Mehlenbacher Road and the Pinellas Trail to Clearwater-Largo Road. The city has developed a design based on the requested public input from the Lucymar

and Ridgecrest neighborhoods regarding stormwater drainage, paving, community streets connectivity, and traffic calming.

The next step will be to introduce the design at the Dec. 15 meeting, and allow the residents of the Lucymar and Ridgecrest neighborhoods to review the proposed traffic calming recommendations for their neighborhood and vote on the final traffic calming design.

The open-house style meeting will be held in the Bilgore Conference Center at Largo Medical Center, Salon A, at 201 14th St. S.W. and is open to the public.

LuLu’s Oyster Bar: IRB’s culinary treat

I

don't want to blow up Matt Loder's head by calling him and his Loder clan geniuses, but I will be the first to say it was a brilliant move to take the former PJ's location when they moved across the tracks a couple of years ago.

If I had had more than 15 bucks in my pocket, knew how to cook, or even had the slightest clue about how to run a restaurant, I would have been the first person in line. OK, maybe the second behind Matt Loder, to take over the former PJ's location. It was a brilliant move. Maybe brilliant is a stretch, but I am jealous.

The Loder family, which owns Crabby Bill's, Jake's Cantina, SeaBreeze, and God knows what else, is also the proud owner of LuLu's Oyster Bar and Tap House, located, yes, again, in the former PJ's location.

No offense to PJ's owners, but why in the world would you give a location you spent decades building to the largest seafood restaurateur in the area? It makes no sense. But if it wasn't the Loders, Frank Chivas or Steve Westphal would have jumped on it.

Of course, the restaurant that would fill the location would have to live up to or exceed PJ's. Personally, I have never been a fan of PJ's. The food is average and the service not even that, in my opinion, but to be fair, I know a lot of people like the joint. I admit I'm very picky. So on the evening I dragged my

son along with me to dine at LuLu's, I didn't have particularly high expectations because I was comparing the restaurant to the former occupant, PJ's.

But truthfully, with Matt Loder behind this endeavor, I should have had greater expectations. I don't know Matt personally, but I do know of his highly respected reputation of great restaurants.

Moving on, my son and I picked a Wednesday night to go to LuLu's to beat the weekend crowd. The hostess greeted us with a smile and walked us to our table. The first thing I noticed was the warm lighting of the place. Yes, my dear friends, atmosphere is huge to me.

Now back to the oysters. I ordered the sampler, which was three of each type of oyster: Wild Virginia Oysters, Blue Point, Raspberry Point and Beaver Tail. They were delicious and I was actually surprised how affordable everything on the menu was.

LuLu's boasts over 20 beers on tap, from pale ales to domestics and imports, as well as a "beer of the month." Very nice catch, I mean offer.

I'm still stuck on my grouper.

Overall, Lulu's was incredible. I was extremely impressed with everything: the atmosphere, the food and our service, but make sure you get in there before season is in full swing!

First Night St. Pete New Year’s Eve ST. PETERSBURG - Ring in the new year at the 24th annual First Night St. Petersburg New Year’s Eve Celebration of the Arts in downtown St. Pete on Saturday, Dec. 31.

The event encompasses over 20 different venues throughout downtown St. Petersburg, featuring many local music acts, such as the David Pate Trio, the Fred Johnson Quartet, the Lakewood High School Jazz Band, WAHH World Fusion Band, Uncle John’s Band and Gumbi Ortiz and New Groove City, as well as Latin dance lessons and opera singers. The dance stage will also feature ballet, tap dancing, Russian folk dancing, hip hop and urban ballet.

The festivities will kick off at 4:00 p.m. with children’s activities in the churches and the library, followed by a giant sea creature procession with sea creature puppets created by the Morean Center for Clay summer campers and led by the Mt. Zion Drumline and Color Guard at 7:15 pm.

In the parks and around town, you can experience glass blowing demos from Duncan McClellon Glass, hands-on art projects, human foosball with the Rowdies, tree climbing, ice skating, fireworks at midnight and more.

ack in the day, we didn’t even know what “punkabilly” or “psychobilly” music was. But, lucky for us, Reverend Horton Heat did. And Dec. 30, Reverend Horton Heat brings their kick-ass take on the genre to St. Petersburg’s State Theatre.

Formed in 1985, the Reverend Horton Heat exploded on the scene by playing gigs around their hometown of Dallas, Texas, mixing elements of country, punk, big band and rockabilly to create their own brand of unique music, described by the band as “country-fed punkabilly,” that took the world by storm.

Reverend Horton Heat is the stage name of guitarist and lead vocalist Jim Heath, as well as the name of the band consisting of Heath, Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass and Scott Churilla on drums.

Often imitated, but never duplicated, the Reverend Horton Heat has continued to garner the support of both the underground rockabilly/psychobilly
