BELLEAIR BLUFFS - At a recent Belleair Bluffs City Commission meeting, local residents and commissioners were in agreement that something needs to be done to address the parking situation on the city’s residential streets.

The law in Belleair Bluffs currently allows for parking on both sides of residential streets. According to resident Tom Jenkins, certain streets in particular become impassable at times, due to the congestion of parked cars, and this is a safety issue that can’t be ignored.

Jenkins cited a school bus that honked its horn for over 15 minutes, waiting to get through, until someone finally moved their car.

But the real concern, according to Jenkins, is the possibilty that a firetruck or ambulance will get blocked and won’t be able to get to their destination in a

A plan for Belleair’s Fountain Square Park

BELLEAIR BLUFFS - The Largo Fire Department is looking into acquiring specialized paddleboards to utilize during water rescues within the city of Belleair Bluffs.

The special boards are used by Coast Guard personnel and lifeguards in rough water rescues, and cost around $1,000 each.

BELLEAIR - After plenty of back-andforth, the Town of Belleair and residents of the Althea neighborborhood have ironed out their differences so refurbishment of Fountain Square Park can proceed.

When it was originally learned that the town was going to freshen up the park at the same time nearby road construction was being done, residents requested the installation of a fountain and walkways, as well as preservation of the five oak trees on the land.

The trouble began when residents were informed that four of the five trees would have to be removed; two because of the road construction, one that was hit by a vehicle and one that was unhealthy.

Since then, town officials and residents have met to discuss in the installation of the fountain and walkways.

Minor issues involving the placement of various shrubs remain, but the focal piece of the park - the fountain - will proceed as planned.

CAPTAIN STEVE’S TRANSPORTATION LARGO - A report by Assistant City Manager Henry Schubert, requested by the Largo City Commission, has led to disciplinary action for Community Development Director Carol Stricklin.

Stricklin was recently suspended for five days without pay for her role in the ongoing debacle that is the Building Division.

It turns out that over the last two years, electrical plans reviews were not being performed by the appropriate city officials.

This goes back to former building official, William “Bill” Ondulich, who resigned his post at the end of September.

Ondulich was licensed to do electrical plans reviews himself, but he didn’t feel comfortable doing them, so no one did them.

“If plans came through that had electrical on them, the other disciplines were reviewed and the overall plans were approved but there was no specific review of the electrical plans performed,”

SEMINOLE - At a recent Seminole City Council meeting, Councilor Chris Burke proposed a motion to file a state ethics complaint against former Councilor Patricia Plantamura.

Burke’s thinking was that Plantamura used a city car to attend the annual Florida League of Cities conference in Orlando in August, but she was not there in an official capacity, so it was a misuse of the city car and, consequently, citizens’ tax dollars.

The motion failed to pass, with three councilors voting for it and three councilors voting against it. Councilor Bob Matthews implied it’s time to move on and focus on other city matters.

The ongoing brouhaha within the city council came to a head a couple of months ago, when Vice Mayor Thomas Barnhorn brought it to the council’s attention that he had been informed of disparaging comments about the city council allegedly made by Plantamura at the Florida League of Cities meeting.

Plantamura’s term on the council recently ended, and after multiple other run-ins with fellow councilors, she opted not to run for reelection.

Her seat on the council was filled by newcomer Trish Springer in the Nov. 3 election. Springer garnered over 28 percent of the vote in the election.

The incumbent in the race, Chris Burke, also held on to his seat on the Seminole City Council, with nearly 25 percent of the vote.

Indian Rocks Beach resident takes on Angie’s List with new referral website

t's not arrogance, it's confidence," says Indian Rocks Beach resident, Adam McLean, about his plan to take on referral website Angieslist.com.

Unlike Angie's List, which charges consumers an annual membership fee to join the website, McLean's AdamJofi.com is free to the consumer.

"By charging the consumer, I feel Angie's List is limiting their reach to the consumer to bring business to the service providers," said McLean.

And while McLean agrees both websites are geared towards helping the consumer find an honest and reliable service provider, he makes it clear that AdamJofi.com and Angie's List's number one goal is to bring business to the service contractors who pay to be on the site.

"I decided to launch the site when I learned that Angie's List is charging these ridiculous rates to service providers to be on their site. One of our members told me he was paying around $1,600 a year to reach most, but not all, of their areas in Pinellas County, and when his contract was up this past year, Angie's List wanted $7,000 a year to reach the same area. I asked him how they justified the increase and they told him it was because they have more consumer members now," said McLean.

AdamJofi.com charges $50 a month to service companies per area. For example, Pinellas County is broken down into three areas: North Pinellas, Central Pinellas and South Pinellas. If a member wants to reach consumers in all areas of the county, they would pay $150 a month.

Angie's List boasts more than two million members nationwide, a number McLean says is very low considering there are over two million residents in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties alone.

"I think charging the consumer will be their downfall," McLean said. Especially when there's AdamJofi.com and other

referral websites that are free to the consumer.

According to a recent article in Fortune magazine, Angieslist.com profited last year for the first time in over 20 years.

With a sales force of nearly 2,000 people, Angie's List is forced to increase the costs to their service contractors who choose to pay to be on the site in certain areas.

AdamJofi.com limits the number of service providers to only three per category, whereas Angie's List doesn't not have a limit, and certain categories literally list hundreds of service providers.

"Most people, if they're like me, like to get three quotes, so our goal is to give the consumer three great choices in each category," said McLean.

But AdamJofi.com also has some critics.

"They don't allow reviews from the consumer, so you really don't who you are getting when you go on AdamJofi.com,"

"We are very selective on who we allow to be members. If they don't have an A rating, we don't want them as members. In addition, if any of our members get three legitimate complaints from consumers in a year's period, we will terminate our Adam J. McLean relationship with that member. That has not happened and we hope it doesn't," said McLean.

He also pointed out there are loopholes in Angie's List reviews, saying anyone can get an email address, register on Angie's List and give a review on a service provider, and even their own company.

Angie’s List itself bills the service it provides as “Ratings, Reviews and (Sometimes) Revenge.”

"I'm not knocking Angie's List. We just feel we have an easier and more effective website for the consumer. Our focus is on AdamJofi.com, not Angie's List."

McLean has also recently developed a local coupon website called McPons.com.

He laughs when asked about how he came up with the name for the website.

"My wife and I were on the way to the gym and we were trying to think of a good name. We just couldn't come up with anything, and then my wife said, ‘How about McPons?’ Taking the Mc from our last name and merging it with coupons. I know it's not the best name in the world, but somehow it works," said McLean.

McPons allows consumers to save money by using their smartphones to visit McPons.com, click on the city or county

and category and pull up the coupon.

They can then show the coupon on their phone to the business or restaurant to redeem the coupon, or print the coupons at home.

According to McLean, it doesn't cost the consumer anything to use the coupons on McPons.com. It only costs the advertiser $50 a month to run an ad and attract new customers to their business.

McLean currently runs commercials on television to promote both of the sites. He said his immediate goal is to penetrate the Tampa Bay market.

"We are in no hurry. There are eight counties in Tampa Bay. We want to take our time and find the very best service providers so that we know the consumer will get the very best service at a fair price.

You can't put a timeline on finding great help," said McLean. "The first step is believing it can be done. I've always said failure is never an option. Even if you have to shut down a business, as long as you have learned from the experience, it'll help you with the long term goal of achieving success."

Chez Colette’s: Cet endroit est génial

llow me to set the record straight. I do not do reviews on bad restaurants. You know the old saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity? Tell that to Clinton, Nixon, and the list goes on.

I refuse to be the one responsible for taking down a horrible restaurant. I'll let them do that on their own.

So on that note, let me share with you probably one of my favorite dining reviews, OK, features, of all times.

Ironically, it ranks up there with my alltime favorite, another French restaurant.

What is it with the French? Are they better chefs? Hey, I'm just asking because GD. That's gosh darn for those of you who were unsure.

Back to the French. There is a petite French restaurant, formerly (and appropriately) named Le Petit Bistro, now called Chez Colette's, in Belleair Bluffs on the corner of Melhenbacher and Indian Rocks Road. I don't know why I never dined at Le Petit Bistro, or when it was called Le Bouchon under different ownership.

From what I understand, when the restaurant was called Le Bouchon, it was French-owned and operated,

and when it was Le Petit Bistro, it was American-owned and operated. Wait.

I'm confused. Aren't we all Americans?

That's another story.

Back to Chez Collette's. The restaurant was recently purchased by Collette Pommel, her husband Bernard Jacob, and Collette's son, Chef Chez Colette’s Nicolas Denis.

French Bistro Rumor has it that when the 796 Indian Rocks Rd. N. restaurant was Belleair Bluffs Le Bouchon, the food was excellent Avignon, in the 727-585-9777 but apparently this was southeast tip of France, not the case when it was Le know what they are doing.

Chez Colette's also offers salad and, of course, French Onion Soup, as well as Filet Mignon "Angus" au Poivre (pan seared tenderloin with peppercorn sauce), Steak Tartare, Burgundy escargots, deep sea scallops, and more.

Colette was a wonderful server.

Very warm and caring. And I never use the word wonderful to describe someone. But she truly was. The atmosphere is perfect. It is everything one might expect from a French bistro. You've got to go. Take a date, take your mate, treat yourself....

The couple has also made changes to the menu and improved the overall quality of the food. Not saying it was poor before, but the Dodas are taking great pride in the quality of the meals they serve.
