It’s all over but the crying

don't know when you are reading this but that doesn't matter. This article was written before the election, so it has nothing to do with the results.

In the last month, we have seen the campaigns of the two major camps take some wild turns. (If some of you are wondering why I didn't discuss the other candidates in the previous article, it is because I, like many, view a vote for either as a protest vote with no real impact on the election outcome.)

We have found out that Clinton's advisors were just as careless with emails as she was, with over half a million emails on a whack job's computer that he sexted from.

Trump's campaign contribution to Pam Bondi before she decided not to prosecute Trump U looks a lot like a bribe. Clinton's foundation seems to be more intertwined with her political positions than she wanted to admit. Trump has figured out a way to put a large chunk of the campaign contributions back in his pocket by charging his campaign more for use of his facilities than he charged other politicians in the past.

Spoiler Alert ……. We now know Trump objectifies women. We have seen politicians suggest Clinton has cancer and celebrities suggest Trump uses cocaine.

The mudslinging and muckraking has reached an unprecedented level. This all served to emphasize two beliefs that I have long held.

The first belief is that our politicians run this country the old fashion way and this is not a good thing! First, let's clarify that the U.S. is a democratic republic, not a pure democracy. We do not vote individually on every issue but elect people to do this for us, to represent us. In the past, this was necessary because there was no effective way to poll all citizens or voters. Then along came the Internet. With modern technology and communications, there is no reason our elected officials should be voting based on their interests, opinions or moral beliefs.

Why can't our representatives set up a web site where their constituents can go and tell them how to vote on the issues before them? This could be done using the voters ID info and a SSN to determine if the person is registered in that representative's district.

Granted, most people wouldn't have the time to weigh in on every issue, but it would put this country's direction back in the hands of the people if they had a direct impact on their representative's vote.

The second belief is that the people we elect to represent us should also represent the best America has to offer. I don't want a President who is not as smart as I am, not as good a strategic thinker as I am, not as moral as I am, doesn't have judgment as good as I do. In other words, I want the President to be the best the U.S. has to offer and do a better job than the rest of us could.

When is the last time you can remember an election where you thought both candidates would do a great job? Where the campaign was void of negative press? I can't remember one. I'm not sure of exactly how to fix this problem and I don't think there is a perfect candidate for office or if there ever was one. Does this mean we have to settle for bottom feeders? The answer, in this election, is yes, but what of future elections?

All of the "new" information we have been force fed on both candidates in the last month has had an effect on the way I feel about the candidates and the election. I am sick of it all and I'll bet most of the people reading this are, too, or at least getting tired of it.

Regardless of who won, it's all over but the crying. Not because your candidate of choice lost, but because America didn't win.

This type of election only serves to divide the country in a way that, at the least, will take time to heal, if it ever truly does. I only hope that this serves as a lesson, that differences of opinion will help us see things from a different perspective instead of serving as battle lines.

E

ven though the state of Florida passed the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act in 2014, which authorizes certain physicians to prescribe low-THC cannabis to specific patients, thanks to Amendment 2, many city and county governments are now taking action to enact ordinances that would place a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries in their jurisdictions, and Largo is one of them.

Sarasota city commissioners have already agreed to a nine-month moratorium during which time the city will not approve any applications for medical marijuana dispensaries and treatment centers to be built or do business within

city limits. City officials there claim they need time to analyze the current zoning and building codes to see how they apply to this new class of businesses. Last month, Hillsborough County commissioners approved a sixmonth moratorium there. The cities of Orlando, Wildwood and Delray Beach, along with Orange County, have also passed similar moratoriums.

At a meeting last month, Largo city commissioners agreed with this approach, requesting at least a sixmonth moratorium in the city to give them time to sort out the necessary rules that would regulate things such as the number, location requirements and operating hours of medical marijuana dispensaries.

According to Largo City Attorney Alan Zimmet, there’s no question that the city

will allow these types of facilities, but they just need to take the time to figure out what type of zoning regulations make sense for the community as a whole.

Commissioner Michael Smith wanted to stress that the moratorium would only be for a short-term

period, so residents wouldn’t feel like the city was trying to “kill” the state legislature, or find a loophole around it.

Largo commissioners plan to discuss the moratorium further at their Nov. 22 workshop meeting. The first medical marijuana dispensary in Pinellas County opened in Clearwater last summer.

St. Pete adds bike share to the city’s travel repertoire

irst the Cross-Bay Ferry, now a bike share program. The city of St. Petersburg recently unveiled a program that will provide shareable bicycles throughout the city. The initial phase, part of the Coast Bike Share program, includes 100 bikes that will be housed at 10 “hubs” around downtown.

The first hubs will be stationed along St. Pete’s waterfront district and along Central Avenue.

City planners hope that users of the bike share program will use it in conjunction with the Cross-Bay Ferry service to downtown Tampa. The city of Tampa also participates in the same bike share program.

The director of Coast Bike Share, Eric Trull, says the Tampa chapter has over 25,000 members after less than two years in service.

City vote leaves St. Pete’s First Block open for demo

A

recent vote by the St. Petersburg City Council could ultimately threaten the quaint, historical, “downtown” vibe that many residents of the city hold

so dear.

The area in question is known as First Block, or Detroit Block, or Jannus Block, but it is the historical area between Central Avenue and 1st Avenue North and between 2nd and 3rd streets in downtown St. Petersburg.

The area is home to some of St. Petersburg’s oldest buildings, with 15 historic structures and the city’s earliest commercial buildings. It is also home to popular outdoor music venue Jannus Live.

Despite recommendations by city staff and preservationists to designate it as a local historic area, thus protecting it from future demolition and redevelopment, the city council recently voted 44 not to protect the area.

The buildings’ owners are not in favor of a designation protecting against development, so the initiative needed a

super-majority vote of 6-2 to pass. The 4-4 tie is the same as a “no” vote.

A 2014 city report on the area said, “Certain visual aspects of the block, as well as its compactness amid surrounding redevelopments encourages feelings of historic quaintness, messy vibrancy, and a certain beauty of age that deliver a strong sense of place.”

The city council members who voted to protect First Block, including Mayor Rick Kriseman, are currently looking for other ways to save the area from future redevelopment.

Cooters Restaurant & Bar: Good ol’ Florida

I

f you Google cool seafood joints in Clearwater Beach, my guess is Cooters Restaurant & Bar will be at the top of the list.

What a great place. No, you are not going to be wowed by the dĂŠcor, because, again, it's a great seafood joint in Florida. It's exactly what I would picture if I were to imagine the perfect Florida seafood restaurant.

The atmosphere is casual and relaxing, and while, yes, I am a total restaurant snob, I do not want to sit in a cold and stiff restaurant. I want the warm, inviting and casual atmosphere that Cooters in CB offers. I know I said casual twice, but I don't utilize a thesaurus when I describe the interior of a restaurant. It's charming, it's, well, let's just say it's Florida. And I love my Florida.

On my most recent visit, I chose to dine outside on the front patio, but there is no shortage of seating inside the restaurant. My server was due to give birth at any given table, bless her heart. Yuck, I hate it when Southerners say that, and I can say that because I am one.

Moving on, Jonnie was AWESOME. I know if I was eight or nine months pregnant, I would be an ass to every table.

Actually, if I was at all pregnant, I would be a jerk. Guys don't like pain or discomfort. OK, I'll move on.

I happened, by freak of convenience, to dine at Cooters on a Thursday afternoon, which happens to be Super Grouper Thursday, when they offer a Caesar salad with grouper cheeks, a g r o u p e r Reuben, a grouper

sandwich, and I want to say grouper tacos and a handful of other grouper items.

And, yes, they have a zillion other items in addition to their amazing seafood, such as BBQ Baby Back Ribs, the Famous Cooter Chicken, a Fish and Chips basket, the Sirloin Burger, and the list of mouthwatering items goes on.

I actually wanted to try their killer wings but, hey, did you forget I was there on Grouper

Thursday? So I went with the grouper Reuben and the grouper sandwich, because I couldn't decide what to get and so what do you do? You order both.

OMG, they were both out of this world. The Reuben was amazing and the grouper went perfectly with the Thousand Island dressing, sauerkraut and cheese. The grouper sandwich was perfectly prepared and the fresh, fresh bun was delicious. And, yes, I meant to say fresh twice.

Oh, I almost forgot. I also had the She Crab soup, and let me say this, it was hands-down the best in the area.

I dare anyone to create a better tasting She Crab. And just as amazing were the reasonable, and in my opinion, cheap prices. OK, affordable.

Obviously I love the place. It is right down my alley and, truthfully, the perfect restaurant for me.

Well, me and about a million others, I reckon.

And I must confess, I have been to Cooters a ton of times, so I know you also have to order the Old Bay Steamer Bucket, which consists of mussels, oysters, shrimp, crab legs and corn steamed in a bucket and served with red potatoes and garlic bread. Damn, folks, get in there. I ain't playin'!

MUSIC Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime, comes to Jannus Live

S

ublime, a ska-punk-reggae band from Long Beach, Calif., took the world by storm in 1988. Or at least, they took Southern California by storm, eventually touring with local ska bands The Skeletones and Gwen Stefani’s No Doubt.

However, the energetic and eclectic band came to an end with the untimely heroin overdose death of lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Brad Nowell in May 1996, at the age of 28.

The band’s biggest hits, including “What I Got,” “Santeria” and “Wrong Way” were released posthumously in 1997; at the time, many fans of the band were unaware that Nowell had died.

Formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2001, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime (named after a song on Sublime’s debut album, 40oz. to Freedom), is obviously a trubute band that plays music by Sublime. But they are so

much more than that, channeling the spirit of Sublime and garnering thousands of devoted fans, many of whom never had the chance to see Sublime perform live due to Nowell’s death.

Badfish is touring the U.S. through February, and their Indian Summer Tour 2016 has a stop in downtown St. Petersburg at Jannus Live on Nov. 19. Opening for Badfish will be Dale & The ZDubs.

According to the band members (Pat Downes - Guitar, Vocals, Joel Hanks Bass, Scott Begin - Drums, and Dorian Duffy - Keys, Guitar), they perform not as Sublime would have, or did, but as Badfish does.
