CLEARWATER - Clearwater Ciy councilmembers have lowered the boom, and rightly so. It would seem that the city’s tourism website, VisitClearwaterFlorida.com, has been promoting hotels and other lodging accommodations that are located outside of the city, and councilmembers, in particular Councilman Hoyt Hamilton and Mayor George Cretekos, don’t think that’s cool. Councilmembers were swiftly assured that the website would be changed to only include lodging options with a Clearwater zip code.

Penny for Pinellas kills it in the polls By Scott Lancaster

ith nearly 83 percent of the vote, Pinellas County residents chose to renew the Penny for Pinellas one-percent sales tax for another 10 years. The renewal will extend the Penny from 2020-2030, to fund a range of longterm, capital infrastructure projects identified by the county and its 24 municipalities. A top priority in Pinellas County and for many cities is an investment in stormwater infrastructure, as well as roads, bridges and trails. Other projects include public safety facilities and equipment, upgrades to park infrastruc-

ture, community centers, libraries and land for affordable housing projects. The Penny will also support construction of new trails to extend interconnectivity to and between the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, Duke Energy Trail, TriCounty Trail, and Coast-to-Coast Trail, including gaps in a planned 70-mile loop around the county. Voters first approved the Penny for Pinellas sales tax in 1989 and have subsequently renewed it three times to continue funding for countywide projects. One-third of the funds derived from the tax is paid for by tourists and seasonal visitors.

With nearly 76 percent of the vote, the people of Clearwater prove they don’t want to “imagine” any longer.

T

he people of Clearwater have spoken, and in a major way. On the ballot earlier this month was a referendum that would alter the city’s charter and pave the way for the “Imagine Clearwater” plans we’ve been hearing about for over a year. The measure passed with almost 76 perecent of the vote. Imagine Clearwater is a $55 million redevelopment plan for the downtown Clearwater waterfront district whose vision includes plans for more green space, complete with a garden, bike trails, cafes and more, all overlooking the Intracoastal. The plan, which was unveiled earlier

this year, involves a comprehensive overhaul of the downtown bluff area, including Coachman Park, where many outdoor activites and concerts are currently held. The plan for the park would be to transition it from an event venue to a more traditional park, with walking trails, a garden and a playground area. The concerts and other events that are currently held at Coachman Park would instead be held at a new adjacent space called “The Green.” The Main Library would also be tweaked to draw more people to the area, with a rooftop event space overlooking the water and a new groundfloor restaurant. An ambitious aspect of the proposal

involves the city-owned location of the Harborview Centre. The plans recommend that this area be revamped to include a water pad and a pavilion, as well as cafes and shops, and possibly a hotel or housing units. Downtown planners envision the area to be a people-friendly urban core with

more housing options, retail stores and cafes and restaurants, like what downtown St. Petersburg has accomplished in recent years. City officials don’t expect to get started on the project until 2019. The overall completion of the vision will take at least several years.

MUSIC Prepare to rock: Reverend Horton Heat, Dec. 20 By Daniel Holloway

B

ack in the day, we didn’t even know what “punkabilly” or “psychobilly” music was. But, lucky for us, Reverend Horton Heat did. And Dec. 20, Reverend Horton Heat brings his kick-ass take on the genre to St. Petersburg’s Jannus Live for Horton’s Holiday Hayride with Junior Brown and special guests The Blasters and Big Sandy. Formed in 1985, Reverend Horton Heat’s band exploded on the scene by playing gigs around their hometown of Dallas, Texas, mixing elements of country, punk, big band and rockabilly to create their own brand of unique music, described by the band as “country-fed punkabilly,” that took the world by storm. Reverend Horton Heat is the stage name of guitarist and lead vocalist Jim Heath, as well as the name of the band consisting of Heath, Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass and Scott Churilla on drums. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Reverend Horton Heat has continued to garner the support of both the underground rockabilly/psychobilly scene

“Reverend Horton Heat, he's great and plays the music he believes in and nothing else. Go see him or I'll kill you!” ~ The late Lemmy Kilmister, founder of Motorhead and mainstream critics alike, a feat not easily attained. Throughout the band's million-plus album-selling career, their music has been featured in countless TV shows, movies and commercials, and they continue to electrify audiences with their stage presence, rock 'n roll charisma and contagious

energy. The Rev promises to be a fun evening, so prepare to rock harder than you have ever rocked before and get to Jannus Live on Dec. 20, Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $27 in advance, $30 the day of the show. Jannus Live is located at 18 2nd St. N., St. Petersburg. For more information, visit jannuslive.com or call 727-896-6329.

E&E Stakeout Grill: Simply perfect

T

he last thing E&E Stakeout Grill needs is a glowing dining review describing how great they are, but I'm going to do it anyways. Why, you ask? Because for those few, very unfortunate souls who have not experienced E&E, perhaps after reading this review, they will. E&E could easily, and probably does, and should, brag about being one of the best steak restaurants in not just Pinellas County, but the entire Tampa Bay area. But E&E is so much more than a steakhouse. Everything they serve is over-the-top amazing. For example, I go back and forth between the Rodeo Steak (8-ounce or 12-ounce Grand Western Rodeo Steak with creamy horseradish and smashed sweet potatoes) and the Atlantic Salmon, served with an Asian BBQ glaze and herbed wasabi remoulade. Both are to-die for. As far as other items on the menu, my wife loves the Kokopelli Salad, with grilled breast of chicken, bacon, ostenborg buttermilk blue cheese, tomatoes, guacamole, cucumbers, red onion, romaine lettuce, red and green bell peppers, celery and their

gazpacho vinaigrette. She orders it every time, without fail, and loves it just as much every single time. Truthfully, folks, you can't go wrong with whatever you order. The steaks are amazing, probably my favorite in all of Tampa Bay. The fajitas and E&E Stakeout Grill burgers are outstanding, and 100 Indian Rocks Rd. they serve the Belleair Bluffs freshest fish you Eugen will ever taste. Fuhrmann started 727-585-6399 Yes, it's obvious I love the Lobster Pot the place, so back to my gushing Restaurant in Bermuda. After compliments.... making that restaurant successful, he In all seriousness, the place is run like then came to the United States in 1978 a well-oiled machine. The service is to open the Lobster Pot Restaurant in great, and the atmosphere is modern Redington Shores with Erwin and elegant. What do you mean, the Scheuringer as chef. two have nothing in common? The In 1985, Eugen and Erwin opened management is dialed in to every last detail, and restaurant's chef is incredible. At E&E, it all starts and ends with Chef Erwin Scheuringer. So here is the story, and, yes, I stripped it off their website, so sue me.

In April of 1999, Eugen sold his interest in the Lobster Pot Restaurant and now devotes all of his attention and expertise to E&E Stakeout Grill, Guppy's, and their North County restaurant, Mystic Fish. Now, back to E&E. Let's stay focused, people! The bottom line is this: the place freaking rocks. The food is out of this world, the atmosphere is relaxing, inviting and great for business meetings. You're going to pay a couple more bucks if you go at dinner, and since I just checked my bank account, I will continue going at lunch. If I gave out A pluses, I would give one to E&E, but since I always feel there is room for improvement, I will give E&E an A. OK, what the hell, they do deserve an A+. Kudos to E&E! Bon appetit!

Eugen's Restaurant in Belleair Bluffs, which led to fine dining and an older clientele. In 1995, the restaurant was remodeled and reopened with a new Southwestern look as E&E Stakeout Grill. Get it? E&E? In 1992, Eugen and Erwin, along with Scott Bebell (who, at that time, was working as the sous chef at Eugen's Restaurant), opened Guppy's in Indian Rocks Beach.

ecent articles have been about the demand for homes outpacing the supply, forcing prices higher. Hurricane Irma just made it worse. Parts of the Keys were destroyed, but fortunately, reduced the storm to a category 4, while most of the state saw a 3 or less. It's too early to say that an already strong demand for homes will get even stronger. However, many homes have been damaged or destroyed. The first to receive relief will be from homes covered by insurance. Those who

Since 2008, my partner Rebekah, and I have advised investors in the purchase of over 2,000 properties that were either repaired and rented or sold at a profit. In each case, we evaluated the value "as is", the cost to repair, and the value once completed. Our goal is to help those in need because it's the right thing to do. We are available to talk to and advise anyone for free. All our listings and rental properties were photographed by drone within two days of the storm. Once claims are settled, finding a repair crew will be almost impossible, since the demand will far exceed the available labor. Florida, like Houston, will see many shysters arrive to take advantage of desperate homeowners. Make sure you and those you know are not hoodwinked.
